This exhibition explores the relationship between ritual
objects, cultural identity, and food by highlighting objects,
art, archival documents, books, manuscripts, postcards, and
photographs in The Magnes Collection.

Literary Minds: Soviet Jewish Writers portrayed by
Matvey Vaisberg
Recently acquired works by Ukrainian artist, Matvey Vaisberg
(b. 1958), include the portraits of Yiddish writers arrested by
the Soviet regime and executed on August 12, 1952. Painted
on cardboard in the late 80s, these unusual works reclaim a
suppressed cultural heritage at the fall of the Soviet Union.
On view: August 28-December 19, 2014
The Jewish World: A Book Installation
The Jewish World, which is being published by Skir-
Rizzoli in the Fall of 2014, is the first comprehensive catalog
featuring the holdings of The Magnes Collection of Jewish
Art and Life.
Select pages from this lavishly illustrated volume populate an
installation in the Auditorium of The Magnes.
