FIRST CLASS SECURITY: Air Cargo Screening at

First Class Zollservice

Freight forwarders require an air cargo screening solution that not
only satisfies government mandates, but also streamlines opera-
tions, lowers costs, and reduces facility congestion. Increasingly, cus-
tomers see radiation-free screening solutions as being more flexible
and cost effective.
First Class Zollservice of Frankfurt, Germany, was founded in 1992 as a
freight forwarder specializing in customs declarations. In 2007, the company
expanded its services to include air cargo screening and security consulting.
When they wanted to increase the efficiency of their operation, they turned
to the Quantum Sniffer

When a shipment comes in, we have box after box after box after box to
process. The Quantum Sniffers unique non-contact sampling system gives us
the flexibility to screen the cargo in the most efficient way, explained Meike
Schurig, Branch Manager for First Class Zollservice. Sometimes wiping will
give us the best coverage in the shortest period of time, sometimes the
heated vortex. Either way, we get more work done with fewer people as
compared to hand search, and our customers get their cargo out fast.

Fast is important to First Classthey handle over 1,000 tons of cargo per
monthhowever, in air cargo, safety is as important as speed. Ms. Schurig
recalls, One day we had an alarm and we called the police. They brought
detection dogs, but were not able find anything. Since cannot ship a package
that has had an alarm, we returned it to the sender.
As it turns out, they originally packed the shipment with a drying agent
that is not approved for air transport because it contains components of
explosives, so they repacked the shipment and resent it. This gave us a lot of
confidence in the Quantum Sniffer. It detected a prohibited substance that
was missed by the dog team. Hand search, visual inspection and x-ray would
have failed as well.
First Class Zollservice evaluated competing systems when adding trace
detection to their range of capabilities, and chose the Quantum Sniffer
because they found it to be the most cost effective.
The handheld QS-H150 also makes screening big items easier. "The systems
portability is a huge advantage for us. Shipments that wont fit through an
x-ray tunnel are the ones that would also be most awkward to bring to a
non-portable sniffer. With the Quantum Sniffer we can bring the detector
to the cargo.
The QS-H150 is not subject to the restrictions on installation, use, removal,
or transport that can apply to trace detectors with radioactive ion sources.
We have found that being able to freely move the system from one site to
another gives us a lot more flexibility in operation.
So how does First Class Zollservice like the QS-H150? Alles ist gut. We are
