JoSevauisaverycreativeandclevercardmagician.Hehascomeupwithsomefascinatingideas
andI'mveryexcitedtohelpintroducethisextremelyvisualmoveofhistoyou.Itisaknackymoveto
saytheleast.I'veseenJodoitoverandoveragainsoIknowitcanbedonebothcontrollablyand
masterfully.Don'tgetdiscouragedifyouhavetroublegettingittowork.Istillhaven'tmasteredit
myself,butthetimesthatIdogettherightposition(withthecorrectpressure)itworkslikeacharm!
WhenIfirstmetJo,heperformedmostofhistricksviaclassicsleights:theclassicpass,palm,false
shuffle,andtopchange.Itwasrefreshingtoseeayoungstreetperformerrelyingmostlyonclassic
movesandmisdirectionratherthanthemorecommon(andeasier)sleightssuchasdoublelifts,Elmsley
counts,tipoverchanges,andetc.Healsowasfondofcreatingtricksandmovesratherthansimply
learningthehotnewtricksandmoves.
Ishowedhimsomeofthenewercoveredversionsoftheseclassicmoves,suchastheblockcoverpass,
onehandedbottompalm,variouscoversfortheHerrmannpass,secondfromthetopchange,lateral
palm/clipstealtechniques,andetc.Hewouldworkhardonthesesleightsandwithinashortspanof
time,betweenaweekandamonthdependingontheparticularmove,he'dmasteredthesleightand
showedmeatrickhecameupwithusingit.Itwascertainlyimpressivetosaytheleast.Thisshouldgive
youanideaofhisdedicationwithsleightofhandwork.
Duringthattimehealsoworkedondevelopinghisownmoves.Twomovesinparticularthatstandout
aretheMechanic'sShiftandHalf2twelve.Iimmediatelysawthepotentialwiththesemovesand
helpedhimwiththeinitialdevelopmentofthem;however,itwasJo'sinitialidea,cleverthinking,
diligence,andperseverancethatshapedthesemovesintotheircurrentform.
Jo,havingmasteredsomeofhisnewcreationsandseeingsomeofmyideas,convincedmetoworkona
DVDprojectwithhim.PriortothisIdidn'teventhinkaboutselfreleasingaDVD,butIknewthere'dbe
interestamongcardguyswithsomeofthemoveswehaddevelopedandwerecurrentlyworkingon.Jo
hadsomeexperiencewithshootingvideoandeditingsowegotstartedassoonaswecould.TheDVD
cametobeknownasSubtleConceptsandfeaturedbothofJo'saforementionedideas(The
Mechanic'sShiftandHalf2twelve).
TheMechanic'sShiftlaterturnedintoanindepthdownloadcontainingmanyofJo'sinitialideas(and
someofmine)whichcertainlyincreaseditspopularity,thankstoVanishing,Inc(...aswellaslaterbeing
combinedandretaughtinafewofmycolorchangetechniques,thankstoTheBlueCrown,Inc).
Jo'sHalf2twelveappearedinitiallyinitscolorchangeformonSubtleConcepts.Itwillalsobe
appearingsooninMAGICMagazine.Here,inthisebook,itwillbeexplainedindepth!Notonlythat,
butmanyofthecurrentHalf2twelveideasthatJocameupwith,aftertheoriginalrelease,are
explainedhereforthefirsttime!Mypersonalfavorite(ofhis),istherisersequence.It'sanicelyroutined
threephasesequencewithlotsofvisualappeal.However,besuretotryouttheoriginalproductionand
colorchangefirst.
Therearelotsofideashereandtheinformationyouneedtogetstarted.Ialsothinkthatthismovehas
lotsofpotential,someofwhichhaveyettobediscovered;so,workonitandseewhatideasyoucome
upwith!andbestofluckonyourvoyage!

How it all began


Itwasaboutaquarteraftereleven,whenasmallgroupofmagiciansinHawaiiruffledandbustled
amongthebusyrestaurantspace.Wewereatourfavoritelocalhangoutspot.Alatenightjamsession
wasabouttotakeplaceafteranexcitingnightofstreetmagicontheWaikikistrip.Theothermagicians
startedsharingsomeoftheirfavoritecardcontrols.

Aftersharingsomeideaswiththeothers,itwasabout11:30pm,halfwaytotwelve,whenIdecidedto
experimentwithanewidea.Whileonthesidelines,Iplacedacardinfamiliarpositionsandplaces
withinthedeck,twistingandturningthedeckaround...Iwasontosomething!Anideathata
perpendicularoutjoggedcardintheupperportionofthedeckcanswingwithatwirlofthefingersinto
astunningvisualdisplay.
Idemonstratedtheroughideatotheothermagiciansandtheyimmediatelygotexcited.Thebeautyof
themoveisthatthecardthatappearsisinnotjustinanopenposition,butalsoinapermanent,
functional,andstunningposition.ThismovelatercametobeknownasHalf2twelvewithanodtoa
nightIllneverforget(representingasessionwherethismovewasborn),takingplacehalfwaytotwelve
Oclock!


Credits, mechanics, and related moves
JosHalf2twelveworksinaninterestingandnovelmanner.Inonehand,usingpressuretocreatea
pivotpointandthefingersofthesamehandtopushthiscardouttocreateasuddenappearanceofa
card.Itreallyisanamazingcombinationofactionsthatmakeitwork.EventhoughJosapproachis
original,Ithinkitsnecessarytomentionmovesthatarerelatedinapproach(especiallythosethat
existedprior).
Ofcourse,secretlypositioningacardperpendiculartotheresthasbeenusedwayback,foranolder
referenceseeHofzinsersuseinhisbookoncardconjuring.JuanTamarizhasaneffectivemodern
approachtousingasecretlyturnedcard(perpendiculartotherest)inhisTPC(seeSonata,1989).Ken
Krenzelalsohasworkwithasecretlypositionedperpendicularcardinregardstoacontrollingacard.
JosHalf2twelvehasnicecontrolwhichallowsittocreateacolorchangeviathesamemechanicsas
theappearance(simplyproducingacardaboveapreviouslyout/anglejoggedcard).Thiscolorchange
approachwasactuallythefirstfunctionalwayJointendedtouseHalf2twelve.Thepositionofthe
cardanduseasacolorchangewaslooselyinspiredbyJackCarpentersImpulseChange;themethod
ofcourseisentirelydifferent.
Otherrelevantsourcinghasbeenincludedinthetext(suchastheambitiousriserapproachinspiredby
RayKosby).However,theclosestthingthatImawareofthatbearssimilarmechanicsandpositionisan
ideaofJerryAndrus(seeAndrusDealsYouIn,1956).Andrususedasecretlyanglejoggedcardtocreate
atwohandedrisingcard.Jostartsfromadifferentpresetpositionandutilizesonehandandaquick
appearanceasopposedtoAndrusmethodoftwohands,differentsetup,andslowerrisingcard
appearance.Withthatsaid,Andrusideaiscertainlyworthcheckingout.
Aslightshakeorjerkofthehand(orwristaction)istypicallyusedinconjunctionwithHalf2twelve;
however,itisbynomeanspartofthesecretmechanicalactionthatmakesitwork(itcanbedonewith
thehandandwristcompletelystillifnecessary).
Ispecificallypointedoutthatnohandorwristactionisnecessarysinceanotherapproachtoasudden
appearancecameoutrecently.ZachMuellersapproachtoasuddenpopouthappenstobearsome
resemblance,bututilizesahand/wristactionmakingacardappearviainertia.However,asfarasIm
aware,JosHalf2twelveprecededZachsmoveinbothcreationandpublication.Also,Josmove
doesntrelyoninertia(exceptintheinstanceoftheboomerang/spinner).Although,Idorecommend
thatyoucheckoutZachsmovesinceitisaninterestingapproachnonetheless.
Function
Half2twelveisamovewithlotsofpossibilities.Partsleightandpartflourish,sinceithasboth
hiddenandvisualaspectstoit,themovecanaddpizzazztoyourtricksandroutines.Itcanbeusedasa
popout,aceproduction,colorchange,riser,boomerangcard,andcanbeusedinconjunctionwith
visiblesandwicheffects.Thelimitofthemoveistotheextentofyourimaginativeandcreativemind.
Therefore,Irecommendlearningthebasicmoveaswellassomeoftheapplications,butalsotoplay
aroundwithitonyourownandseewhatyoucancreate.Youneverknow,youmayjustcomeupwith
yournextfavoriteroutine.Sograbyourdeckandgetreadytostartlearning!

Setup
Thesetupisperformedintwosmoothstepscombinedintoone,coveredintheactionofcasually
squaringthedeckorpacket.Thegoalofthesetupistosecretlypositiontherequiredcard(orcardsin
somecases)perpendiculartothedeck,stickingoutfromthecenterofthedeck(totherightundercover
ofthehand).Itmaysoundcomplicated,butcertainlyisnot,thephotographsonthefollowingpages
helpdepicttheposition(inparticularfigureA4showsthecompletedsetup).

Thesupportivehand(aboveinBiddlegrip)helpstogiveshadetothemove(andafterthe
preliminarysetup,itwillbethehandholdingthedeckandperformingthemove).Eventhoughthesetup
isdoneundercoverofthishandandsquaringaction,thesetupismeanttobedoneontheoffbeat.
Note:Ifthedeckisbeingburnedbytheeyesofyourspectators,bemindfulofyourangles.
1.Beginbypositioningthepacketinnormalmechanicsgrip.
2.Obtainapinkybreakbeneaththedesired/selectedcardviayourfavoritemethod.
3.Extendyourpinkypushingtheselectedcardaboveoutward.Continuewiththeactionuntiltheleft
uppercorneroftheselectedcardisfeltagainsttheskinofyourleftthumb(similartoperforminga
diagonalpalmshiftorcherrycontroltypesetup).Thecardbecomesoutjogged/angledasnoted,refer
toA1below.

4.Pullusingyourleftthumb,pinkyandringfinger,downwardsuntilthecardcornerisalignedtothe
horizontalmidlineofthepacket.RefertoA2onthefollowingpage.

Note:Righthand(supportivehand)coverstheactionandsecretlyangledcard.
5.Righthandnowrepositions/slidesoversothatyourindexfingerisalignedwiththeverticalmidlineof
thedeck.Youshouldnowbecoveringhalfthepacketwithyoursupportivehand.RefertoA3below.

6.Usingtheleftthumb,pinky,andringfingerturnthecardintoposition/perpendicularintheupper
half.Fromthepreviouspositionimaginetouchingyourleftringfingertoyourrighthandspinky.Referto
A4(below)forplacement.

Belowisasideviewaftersetupiscomplete.YouarenowreadytoperformHalf2twelve.Keepinmind
thatthesetwoactionsaretobedoneinasingle/smoothmovement,passedoffasasimpleandlight
squaringofthepacket.

Performance
Toperformthebasicpopoutmove,applyaslightpressurewithyourrightindexfingerwhile
executingarollingactionoftherightpinkyandringfingers.Pinkyfirst,followedbytheringfinger.As
statedpreviouslythepositioningoftheindexfingershouldalreadybeattheverticalmidlineacrossfrom
thethumbcoveringhalfthepacket.Seefigurebelow(steps13)forreference.

Eventhoughitsboththepinkyandringfingerthatareusedtopushthecardintheproperposition,you
shouldfirsttryusingonlythepinky.Thiswillgetyouintoapositionsimilartostep2intheimageabove
(youmayevenbeabletoangleitslightlymorethandepictedinthisstepoftheimage.Trytogetitto
angleoutandstickoutasmuchasyoucanwithjustthepinky.Ifitdoesntangleitselfproperly,pushit
backintosetuppositionandtryagain.Thenafteryougetthepinkytopivotthecardoutatanangle,use
theringfingertocontinueandcompletetheanglingofthecardbymovingitbackalongtherightedge
ofthedeckasifsquaringthedeckontherightside.Theringfingeressentiallynicksthecornerofthe
cardandbymovingthisfingerintowardsyourself,itsquaresthecardintothedeckfromtherightside,
causingittoangleoutandprotrudemore(fromtheleftandfrontofthedeck).Thepositionand
pressureoftheindexfinger(andmiddlefingerholdingthedeck)createthepivotpointneededtocause
thecardtoangleitselfout.
Afteryougetthefeelofdoingtheactionsinsteps,trycombiningtheactionsofthepinkyandringfinger
intoasmoothaction.Ithasbeenbrokendownintosteps,butwhenperformingtheaction,itisdonein
afractionofasecond.
Themoveisabitknacky,butthekeytocontrollinghowmuchtheproducedcardoutjogsissolely
determinedbytwothings:theamountofpressureyouapplytothetopofthepacketutilizingyourright
indexfinger,andtheamountofpowerplacedbehindtherollingactionoftherightpinkyandring
fingers.Thefingersrolltoallowthecardtoprojectattheproperanglefromthefront.Itwilltakesome
trialanderrortofigureoutthetimingwithassociatedfingerpositioningtomakeitwork.

Ifitdoesntout/anglejogproperlyonthefirstattempts,Imnotsurprised.Somemaygetittowork
easilyafterthefirstfewtriesandotherswillnodoubtstruggleafterthetwentiethoreventwo
hundredthtry.Thereiscertainlyaknacktoitanditisimportanttokeepthekeypointsinmind.Ifyou
keepthesepointsinmindandadjustittomakeitworkforyou,youwillnodoubtgetthemovedown.
Rereadthedescriptionaboveandrefertothefiguresillustratingtheaction.Besuretopositionyour
handandfingersascloselyasyoucantothesephotossincethepositionandpressurearefundamental
inmakingthemovework.
Remember,evenafteryoucandoit,ittakesextrapracticetokeepyourfingersuptospeedsomake
sureyouputintheextrapracticetimetocompletelymasteritandjustliketheclassicpass,besureto
continuallypracticeittokeepyourfingersincheck.
Cover and Angles
ThecoverforHalf2twelveissuppliedbythehandholdingthedeckfromabove.Theanglesare
covered,excepttheleftside(sincethesecretlypositionedcardcanbeseeninthegapbetweentheright
handandthedeck).Basedonwhereyourspectatorsare,therighthandcanbetiltedtoaccommodatea
specificside.Example:Useacliptypeofgriptofavorthefront,rightandrearsides.RefertoA5below
forcoveringhandpositions.

Effects
Thetricks/effectsofHalf2twelveweredevelopedovertime,thegreatandsupportivemindsof
RichardHucko,PatrickKun,andCurtisKamhavehelpedtofurtherdevelopthemoveintoamore
applicableandversatiletool.

SuddenAppearance:
Thebasicproductioncanbeutilizedasasoloeffectwhereinacardappearssuddenlystickingoutofthe
deckinthefinalout/anglejoggedposition.Eventhoughthisisabasicuseofthemove,keepinmind
thatitisasurprising,visualappearanceofacard.Anevenmorestunningappearancecanbeobtainedif
youreversethecardpriorsoafaceupcardappearsfromafacedowndeck.

QuickTeleportationJump:
Thistrickisofcoursemeanttobequickandattentiongetting.Ateleportingtype/cardeffectcanbe
performedbybottompalmingasinglecardintheactoftossingwhilesimultaneouslyperformingthe
production.Theeffectisthatacardisseeminglytossed(impliedvanish)fromthelefthandandappears
inthemiddleoftherighthandspacket.Theappearanceofthecardinthedecktakestheattentionoffof
thecardinpalm.Seepicturesbelow:

Note:handpalmingcardisinexaggeratedpositionabovetoillustratethatacardisinpalm.Besureto
relaxthehandwhenperforming.
Sinceyouendwithacardinpalm,theeasiestwaytocleanupistocasuallyplacethedeckintothehand
overthepalmedcard(retainingthecardinpalm)inordertoallowyourighthandtobefreesothatit
mayremovethecardstickingoutofthedeckforabetterdisplay(aftertheeffect,ontheoffbeat,square
thepalmedcardonthebottomofthedeck).
Anothercleanuppossibilityistoproducethepalmedcardfromyourpocketasadifferentcard(such
asadifferentaceinanaceroutine).Ifyoudliketouseaselectionandmakeitteleportforadditional
impact,seethefirstphaseofHalf2twelveRiserforaneffectiveswitch/settomakeitworkthen
performtheteleportationasdescribedabove.

AceProduction:
Acardsuddenlyappearsstickingoutofthecenterofthedeck,uponturningthecardovertorevealit,
suddenlythematesofthecardappear!Thisisanicewaytorevealfouracesoranyfourofakind.A
quickappearanceofonecardandasecondlater,asurpriseappearanceofthreemore!
Placetwoacesonthebottomofthedeckandasingleaceontop.Thefirstacetobeproducedneedsto
bemaneuveredintothesecretsetupforHalf2twelve(tobeproducedfacedownfromafacedown
deck).Oncethisfirstaceisproduced,thelefthandturnsoverstudfashiontoseeminglytakeitoutof
thedeck,butintheprocesssecretlythethumbtouchesthebottomaceandtakesitwithitfromthe
bottom.Atwistingactionofthewristturningthecardsovertodisplaytheirvaluesandpointingaction
oftherighthandspointer/indexfingerproducesthetopcard/aceandcompletesthesequence.Referto
A7andA8below.

Color Change
ThemoveasacolorchangewasoriginallypublishedonthefirstSubtleConceptsDVD,explained
asasinglecardchange.Aquickshakeofthedeckandtheout/anglejoggedcardchanges!Theeffectis
similartoJackCarpentersfamousImpulseChange,themethodofcourseisentirelydifferent.

BeginbyplacingacardlowerinthedecktowherethesoontobeproducedHalf2twelvecardwill
be/appear.Besuretoplacethecardintheshadowposition(approximatelythesameposition/angleof
wheretheproducedcardwillappear,butlowerdowninthedeckandstickingoutslightlyless).Perform
theproductiontocompletethecolorchange.
Note:Therighthandindexfingerplacementshouldasstatedbeforebeaverticalmidlineformaximum
cover.Theindexfingerisresponsibleforcoveringaportionoftheold/tobechangedcardshouldthe
productionnotbeexact.RefertoA9onthefollowingpage.

Boomerang/Spinner
Theboomerangeffectcanspinoutsingleormultiplecards.Itcanbeusedtoproducesandwiched
cardsspinningacrossatable,orasusualintheair.Practicecatchingtwocardsatthesametime/always
acrowdpleaser,stilltheeffectallowsyoutokeepcompletecontroloverthepacket.

ExecutebysimplypositioningthedesiredamountofcardsintheHalf2twelveposition,onlythistime
secondfromthebottom.Theamountofpressureappliedbytherighthandsindex/pointerfingerwill
determinethespeed/heightoftheboomerang.Assistwiththerighthandswrist/twistingoutwardsfor
betterresults.RefertoA10Below.

Half 2twelve Sandwich
Anadditionaleffect,creditedtothemindofPatrickKunwasapplyingHalf2twelveviaa
sandwichproduction.Example:Twoacesprotrudingfromthedeck,aselectedcardappears
instantaneouslybetweenthem.Easilydonebyplacingapairofaces(1)aboveand(1)belowthe
selectedcards(insetuppositionfortheproduction).

Half 2twelve Riser!


Thisisabeautifuleffectandmymethodhassomeniceadditionsandsubtletiesinit.Half
2twelveallowsareallynicetouchofapackettopacketjump(upwards)inavisualambitiouscard
sequence.Beforewegetintoit,heresalittlebackgroundThevisualambitiouscardplothasgrown
extremelypopularovertheyears,fromGeoffLattasideautilizingpasses,ShigeoFutagawa'sElevator,
ChrisKennersSWElevator&Shifty,RayKosbysRaiseRise,AaronFishersAmbitiousGraduate,
ChrisMayhewsmorerecentLazyRise,DanielGarciasinterestingapproach,andfinallytheBucks
flourishUzumaki.Theseareallextremelyclevermethodsthatarewellworthexamining.Specifically
RayKosbysfinessesonEricMasonsambitiousrisermovewithinhisuseinRaiseRiseinspiredthis
sequence.

Mostvisualrisereffectshavearepetitiouslookwhereacardslowlymovesupthroughthepackwithout
deviation;however,Idontfeelthisisabsolutelyessentialintheplot.Itseemstomethatacardmoving
andjumpingupasopposedtosimplyrisingupfromastaticdeckcreatesaneffectthatisatleastas
strong,ifnotstronger.
Although,different,GaryKurtzusedanonlinearconceptveryeffectivelyinhisvisualcoinsacross,
makingcoinsjumpfromhandtohandandbackagaininsteadofasequentialstraightforwardfirstcoin
goesacross,thensecond,etc.Thiswascertainlyanicetouchtothevisualcoinsacrossplot.
Although,wearedealingwithcardsinarisingambitiouseffect,thisconceptofabreakincontinuitycan
stillapplyandbeeffective.Eventhoughthecardissequentiallyrisingupinthedeck,theideaofsplitting
thepackandcreatingavisualjumpupwardsaddsvariety;thisslightdeviationalsomakesitseemeven
moreimpossiblewhilestillmatchingwiththeoveralleffect.
Mytakeontherisingplot,startssimilarlywiththeselectionanglejoggedontheverybottomofthe
deckandvisuallymeltsupwardstothemiddle.However,theadvantagehereisthatthecardcanstart
belowthedecknottouchingitandgivestheappearanceofatossmeltingthroughtothecenter.Thefull
packetisthensplitintotwopackets,theselectedcardtransposesviaavisualjumpfromthelower
packettotheupperpacket(certainlydifferent,buthasasomewhatfamiliarfeeltoEarlNelsonsvisual
SubmarineSandwichtrick).Thetwopacketsarethenplacedtogether,theselectedcardnow
positionedinthenalHalf2twelvepositionlastlyandinstantlywithintheactionofasimpleshake;
jumpstothetop(essentiallyRayKosbysfinalriseinhisRaiseRisesequence,whichblendsin
perfectlywiththesequenceandcreatesthefinalvisualrisetothetop).Averyeffectiveandextremely
visualthreephasesequencewhichhasaniceanimatedeffecttoit.
PhaseI:(Cardmeltsfrombelowthebottomofthedeckupintothecenter)
Setup(InitialSwitchout)
Startbyperformingasimplecardswitch.Inthismethod,tellyourspectatortocalloutstopasyou
dribblethecards.Atthepositionthespectatorcallsstop,displaythefacecardoftheupperpacket
(spectatorsselection).Afterthespectatorhasnotedthecard,tiltthepacketbacktoitsoriginalposition
(facedown,packetsstillseparate)anduseyourlefthandsmiddlengertopush(Vernonsideglide)the
selectedintotherighthandclipposition(lateralstyleclippositionbetweenthirdandfourthfingers).
Thiscreatesaneasyaccesspointrevealingenoughesh/whiteofthenext(cardabovetheselected
card).Atthispoint,useyourlefthandmiddleandpointerngerstopulloutthenonselection,enough
toproperlygraspandswitchthecard.Refertofiguresbelow(note:4ofDiamondsbeingtheselected
cardinthisparticularcase)

Thesetupisalldoneintheactionofsupposedlyplacingtheselectedcardontheverybottomofthe
packetorinthetakingawayactionofthelefthand(momentarily,placethesupposedselection,

Usingarifeaction,locateandcreateabreakwiththelefthandsthumb,abovewhatisnowthe

actionis:withthelefthandpinky,breakanywhereabovetheselectionandutilizetherandomcardfor
thenextHalf2twelve,setupviapressinguponthecardandkickingitoutintothesecret

Performthetranspositionbysimplypullingtheselectionintothelefthandspacket,utilizingthepinky
andrstngerintheactionofashake,keepinginmindthatthepinkymustmaintainabreakonthe
bottomrighthandcorneroftheselectedcard,importantforthenalriseeffect.Simultaneous
performanceoftheHalf2twelve,productionintherighthandwillachievethetranspositioneffect.To
thespectatoritshouldappearasiftheselectedcardtraveledinstantlyfromtheleftorlowerpacketinto
therightorhigherpacket.
