Attention All
Starbucks Lovers!

T
he United Church of Christ Justice and Witness Ministries has joined a coalition of organizations
led by Oxfam America to support Ethiopia’s negotiations with Starbucks to trademark its most
famous coffees.
The coalition is urging Starbucks Coffee to sign a licensing agreement developed by the Ethiopian
government to allow Ethiopia to control the names of its coffees and set export prices accordingly.
By sending this message to Starbucks, consumers can help the Ethiopian government to guarantee its
15 million coffee farmers a fair price.
Ethiopia ranks among the poorest countries in the world. More than 75 percent of its population
lives on less than $1 per day. About 15 million people in Ethiopia depend on coffee to make a living.
If Starbucks and other companies sign licensing agreements, it is estimated that Ethiopia could receive
an extra $88 million in income per year.
Starbucks coffee sales netted $5.8 billion in revenues during the first three quarters of 2006. Ethiopian
coffee farmers earn only five to ten percent of the retail value of the coffees they grow.
The trademark agreement proposed by the Ethiopian government would deliver the profits from
increased coffee prices to small-scale farmers currently barely able to survive. Starbucks has taken some
initial steps to help small farmers in poverty, but a trademark agreement with Ethiopia could have a
profound impact on the lives of millions of Ethiopians.
To send a message to Starbucks urging them to negotiate a licensing agreement with the Ethiopian
government in good faith, go to http://act.oxfamamerica.org/campaign/starbucks.
Sincerely Yours,

Advent Meditation #1 – Advent 2006

The Intimate Experience of Advent

“Longing”
“Hi! – How are you?” “Fine, thanks! How are you?” “I’m fine.” The conversation
is over, merely a passing pleasantry. How are we, really? Perhaps, we have no press-
ing problem, but are our deep, inner feelings truly “fine?” Or is there some inner
restlessness, perhaps some feelings of partiality? Do we, perhaps, feel that something
is missing in our lives?
Advent is a season for getting in touch with these inner feelings and finding a
greater sense of wholeness. This finds expression in the hymns and carols we sing.
Music opens up parts of our being that reasoning alone can not touch. The words of
hymns, backed up by the music, can give voice to our inner longings.
The hymn, “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” goes back to medieval times, but it
expresses the perennial longing for hope and light.
O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel. That mourns
in lonely exile here, until the Son of God appears. O come, thou Day-
spring, come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here. Disperse the
gloomy clouds of night, and death’s dark shadows put to flight.
In this season, we may not feel “mourning,” “exile” or “gloominess,” but what
inner longings do we keep hidden? Unseen and unacknowledged, they do not find
fulfillment.
The words and music of Advent can touch these inner, intimate feelings by en-
abling us both to identify them and to realize that solutions are possible. Often, if
we name a longing, we are halfway toward fulfilling it. God’s Spirit helps us with
this process, so Advent is a good time to let the Spirit in.

Stewardship…
Results of a Redeemed Life
ALL OF HIM

I
know of a church with some truly gifted people. One lady sings like an angel. Another is gifted
with great wealth and helps the church financially. One gentleman has the gift of teaching and
leads awesome Bible studies. Then there’s Pinky.
His real name is Marvin, but he actually prefers Pinky! Week after week he is running around the
church, fixing an aging boiler or replacing the drainage gutters. I often see his truck parked out in
front of the church, as he stops in to make some minor (and sometimes major) repairs. He doesn’t
get paid for any of this, nor would he take it anyway. He likes to think of his work as an offering of
thanks for all God has done for him.
When I think of those who give the most, I’m reminded of how the Bible says not to bring atten-
tion to our gift giving. Thanksgiving is often measured not so much in quantity, but in how much
heart and soul we put into what we give. We’re not all called to go to foreign countries or to lead big
ministries, but to help out where we can with humility and thanks — just like Pinky!

MINIMUM WAGE

I
n the news this week, Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY) announced plans, upon ascending
to Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, to reinstate the draft. Americans would have
to sign up for the military draft after turning 18, should the Congressman have his way.
While this measure appears to be nonsensical, Rangel has a method behind his madness. Rangel is
convinced that the rush to war in Afghanistan and Iraq would not have been as hastily entered into if
the sons and daughters of congressmen, senators and the President also would have been eligible for
military service.
Prayerfully, the new leadership in the House and Senate will push harder to end this senseless war
and bring our troops home. According to Senator Barck Obama, “For the fact is that there are
no good options left in this war. There are no options that do not carry significant risks.” He later
stated in his speech to the Security Council, “There have been too many speeches. There have been
too many excuses. There have been too many flag-draped coffins, and there have been too many
heartbroken families. The time for waiting in Iraq is over. It is time to change our policy. It is time to
give Iraqis their country back. And it is time to refocus America’s efforts on the wider struggle yet to
be won.”
Contact your Senator or Congressman and urge them to push to end the war in Iraq.
