Introduction
Wireless Smoke Detector System
Every year in the United States, over 400,000 residential fires result in 4,000 fatalities
and 20,000 injuries. Over 50% of those fatalities occur in homes without smoe
detectors. !he si"nificance of smoe detectors is evident, and the statistics su#stantiate
the need for the most advanced smoe detectors $ossi#le.
!he motivation #ehind the $roject came from #rainstormin" and thou"hts re"ardin"
#olsterin" home safety. !he im$ortance of smoe detection is one of the chief safety
concerns for residential %sin"le&family' housin". (ost smoe detectors on the current
maret are individual units sans communication or connections to other smoe detectors.
!hus, only the smoe detector that sounds an alarm is the one which senses the smoe.
!he solution is a wireless im$lementation of smoe detectors)increasin" safety in terms
of savin" lives and $ro$erty. *n the incident of a fire, residents are alerted more ra$idly
as res$onse time is decreased, there#y increasin" the chance for survival.
Objective
!he chief "oal entails desi"nin" and im$lementin" a wireless networ of smoe detectors
sans the need of a central console. !he idea is to set off the alarm in all of the smoe
detectors in the networ %i.e. in a house', thus allowin" the warnin" to reach the entire
household.
+ll of the smoe detectors are set off after one detector detects smoe. !he smoe
detector that "oes off wirelessly alerts all the other smoe detectors in the networ,
su#se,uently settin" off all the smoe detectors. !o differentiate the ori"inatin" detector
and the other detectors, each detector is assi"ned its own distinct alarm and can also
$roduce the e-act alarm of the other detectors. .or instance, in a networ of three smoe
detectors %smoe detector +, smoe detector /, and smoe detector 0', smoe detector +
has #een assi"ned 1smoe alarm +2, smoe detector / has #een assi"ned 1smoe alarm
/2, and smoe detector 0 has #een assi"ned 1smoe alarm 0.2 !hus, if smoe detector +
detects smoe, the detector wirelessly transmits a si"nal to smoe detector / and smoe
detector 0, su#se,uently settin" off the 1smoe alarm +2 sound in smoe detector / and
smoe detector 0. !he advanta"e lies in alertin" the residents to where the smoe
ori"inates.
.urthermore, a tem$erature threshold %3254.' is im$lemented with the $ur$ose to avoid
false alarms in cases of minor smoe %cooin", incense, etc.'. .or instance, in the case of
a fire, the tem$erature threshold alarm is set off %with $riority status that is determined #y
the microcontroller' after the smoe alarm to warn the residents of the fire. *n cases of
minor smoe, only the smoe alarm is set off, as the tem$erature threshold has not #een
reached. !his serves to avoid any confusion #etween minor smoe and a fire. !he
tem$erature alarm functions similarly to the smoe alarm, in the sense that each detector
2
is assi"ned its own tem$erature alarm and is also ca$a#le of $roducin" the e-act alarm of
the other detectors5 this allows residents to now where the fire ori"inates. !he
tem$erature alarm sound of the detector is the same as the smoe alarm sound of the
detector #ut at a hi"her volume.
!he smoe detector is desi"ned to run on a 67 alaline #attery. + low #attery warnin" on
the smoe detector warns the residents to switch in a new #attery. !he alert has a
different sound than the sound of the smoe alarm and the tem$erature alarm.

Sc(ematic Descri#tion
PIC icrocontroller
!he microcontroller is the heart of the system. *t receives in$uts from the receiver,
tem$erature sensor, smoe sensor, and low #attery sensor, as well as out$uttin" the
a$$ro$riate si"nals and #its to the tone "enerator and transmitter. *t $rocesses all the
si"nals %di"ital lows and di"ital hi"hs' and determines the su#se,uent action #ased on
those si"nals. !he microcontroller $rioritiDes the alarms #ased on safety level, with the
tem$erature alarm assi"ned the hi"hest $riority and the low #attery alarm assi"ned the
lowest $riority %the smoe alarm is assi"ned the $riority in #etween these two'.
%o& Battery Sensor
!he module measures the amount of #attery life remainin" and sends a di"ital hi"h si"nal
to the microcontroller when the #attery di$s #elow A.67. !he module ena#les the smoe
detector to emit the low #attery alarm via the tone "enerator.
!he $ositive terminal of the 67 #attery is connected to 7in& of com$arator 2 in the
microcontroller. + A.67 volta"e reference is connected to 7inE of com$arator 2.
0om$arator 2 out$uts a di"ital hi"h if 7in& is less than 7inE. !hus, when the #attery life
is #elow A.67, the microcontroller fla"s the di"ital hi"h to run the correct $ro"ram
se,uence and to out$ut the si"nals to the tone "enerator to sound the low #attery alarm.
Tem#erature Sensor
!he tem$erature sensor sends a di"ital hi"h si"nal to the microcontroller when the
tem$erature reaches 3254.. *t functions #y usin" a tem$erature sensor, whose volta"e
out$ut is e,ual to 34.F30m7.

+ 3.257 volta"e reference is connected to 7in& of a volta"e com$arator, and the out$ut
volta"e of the tem$erature sensor is connected to 7inE of the volta"e com$arator. !hus,
the volta"e com$arator out$uts a di"ital hi"h when 7inE is "reater than 7in&, which is
when the tem$erature rises a#ove 3254.. !he out$ut of the volta"e com$arator is
connected to the microcontroller, which in turn fla"s the di"ital hi"h condition to run the
correct $ro"ram se,uence and to out$ut the si"nals to the tone "enerator to sound the

Smoke Sensor
!he module $rovides a mean to detect smoe and to serve as an early fire warnin".
30
!he $remise of the smoe sensor is a !&sha$ed cham#er with an infrared ;EI that emits
a #eam of li"ht across the horiDontal $ortion of the cham#er. + mechanical drawin" is
shown #elow in .i"ure 3.

!he left o$enin" of the cham#er is for the ;EI5 the ri"ht o$enin", for smoe $articles to
enter the cham#er5 and the #ase o$enin", for the $hototransistor. !he cham#er itself is
made of J70 $lastic.
!he infrared ;EI is $ositioned at the left of the cham#er5 the $hototransistor, at the
vertical #ase of the !. !he $hototransistor "enerates a current when e-$osed to li"ht.
.i"ure 2 #elow illustrates the setu$.
.i"ure 2. 1+2 is the infrared ;EI. 1/2 is the $hototransistor.
*f there is no smoe $resent inside the cham#er, the #eam of li"ht is emitted across the
to$ of the !&sha$ed cham#er. !hus, the $hototransistor does not "enerate current as no
li"ht has hit it.
9hen smoe $articles enter the !&sha$ed cham#er, however, the #eam of li"ht is
scattered #y smoe $articles. Su#se,uently, some of the li"ht is directed down into the
33
vertical $ortion of the !&sha$ed cham#er and stries the $hototransistor. .i"ure < #elow
illustrates this.
.i"ure <. 1+2 is the infrared ;EI. 1/2 is the $hototransistor.
Once the $hototransistor detects li"ht and "enerates current, a volta"e is "enerated across
the 30: resistor. !he collector volta"e of the $hototransistor is connected to the 7in&
in$ut of com$arator 3 in the microcontroller. Since the 7inE in$ut of com$arator 3 is
connected to "round, com$arator 3 out$uts a di"ital hi"h, as the in$ut to 7in& is hi"her
than the in$ut to 7inE. !herefore, after fla""in" a di"ital hi"h from com$arator 3, the
microcontroller $rocesses the correct $ro"ram se,uence and out$uts the si"nals to the
tone "enerator and s$eaer module to sound the smoe alarm.
Tone !enerator " S#eaker
!he module emits the a$$ro$riate sound determined #y the microcontroller. !he s$eaer
serves to alert the residents of a smoe, a fire, or a low #attery. Each detector is assi"ned
one distinct alarm %to differentiate amon"st the detectors' that can #e sounded at two
different volume levels %to differentiate #etween the smoe alarm and the tem$erature
alarm'. !he tem$erature alarm is sounded at a hi"her volume level than the smoe alarm.
Each detector also has the ca$a#ility of $roducin" the other detectors@ alarms.
0om#ined with the low #attery alarm, the detector emits u$ to four different sounds %for a
<&detector system' #ased on the si"nal received #y the microcontroller. + tone "enerator
is im$lemented to achieve this. One (UK is used to control the fre, uency of the
"enerated tone #y varyin" the resistance in the tone "enerator circuit5 a second (UK is
used to alter the out$ut resistance to the s$eaer in order to control the volume level.
Transmitter
!he $ur$ose of the transmitter is to send a si"nal to the other smoe detectors in the
networ in order to alert them to set off the audi#le smoe or tem$erature alarm. !he
transmitter is $ro"rammed via the J*0 %usin" the L8S2<2 J*0&0 directive'. *ts out$ut is
transmitted via an antenna, which is shared with the receiver #y use of a hi"h fre, uency
relay. U$on fla""in" a di"ital hi"h from the smoe sensor or tem$erature sensor, the
32
microcontroller $rocesses the correct $ro"ram se,uence and out$uts the si"nals to the
transmitter to alert the other detectors in the networ.
$eceiver
!he module is the counter$art to the transmitter. *ts $ur$ose is to receive the si"nals from
the transmitters of other smoe detectors and to relay that si"nal to the microcontroller.
!he microcontroller, in turn, $erforms the correct $ro"ram se,uence and out$uts the
si"nals to the tone "enerator to sound the a$$ro$riate alarm. !he receiver is $ro"rammed
via the J*0 %usin" the L8S2<2 J*0&0 directive'. *t receives si"nals via an antenna, which
is shared with the transmitter #y use of a hi"h fre, uency relay.
Performance $e*uirement
!he re,uirement for the $roject is to desi"n and to create a functional smoe detector.
+fter detectin" smoe or a hi"h tem$erature %$otential fire', the detector sets off the
a$$ro$riate alarm sound. !he detector also transmits an 8. si"nal to the other smoe
detectors in the networ so that those detectors, in turn, sound their smoe or tem$erature
alarm.
Each detector is assi"ned one distinct alarm %to differentiate amon"st the detectors' that
can #e sounded at two different volume levels %to differentiate #etween the smoe alarm
and the tem$erature alarm'. !he tem$erature alarm is sounded at a hi"her volume level
than the smoe alarm. Each detector also has the ca$a#ility of $roducin" the other
detectors@ alarms.
!he si"nal from one smoe detector is desi"ned and im$lemented to reach all the other
smoe detectors in the networ. +s such, another $erformance criterion re,uires the
smoe detector #ein" a#le to transmit and to receive si"nals at a ran"e of u$ to 500 feet.
