LECONTE LEADERSHIP COMMITTEES

Coalition of Families for African American Students (CFAAS)
The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, January 28, 6:00PM. Participants will be discussing and
finalizing arrangements for our Annual African American Heritage Celebration and Quilt Raffle scheduled for Friday,
February 26, 2010.

English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC)

The next meeting will be Thursday, December 17, 5:00-6:15PM, in the Cooking Room (childcare and dinner
provided). The last two meetings were devoted to discussing and making arrangements for a successful Latino
Heritage Celebration. The community also discussed concerns about homework, especially homework that is in
English and assignments that some families are unable to explain to their children. While the group may decide to seek
an outside consultant to facilitate mathematics or homework help workshops, Principal Wilson explained to the
families that if they did not understand the homework and their children were unable to complete the assignment, then
the parent or guardian should simply write a note to the teacher. The note should say that the child attempted to
complete the assignment but could not because s/he did not understand what to do and the parent was unable to assist.
Students in grades third through fifth should already understand homework instructions and how to complete the
assignment. Parents or guardians are not expected to re-teach the homework. The group also discussed how English
language learners (ELL) funds should be used based on the achievement of LeConte’s ELL students.

November 17 PTA Meeting (next meeting is January 19)

At the November 17 PTA meeting, Julie Venuto, our Full Inclusion teacher, explained the values and goals of being a
"Full Inclusion" school which are welcoming and valuing ALL children in the classroom, and training teachers to
adapt curriculum to the varying needs of their students. Latino Heritage Festival: A grant is pending with the
Berkeley Public Education Foundation (BPEF) to pay part of the dance teacher’s fee for the Latino Heritage Festival.
A motion was approved for the PTA to pay half or all of the fee if the grant is not received. African American
Heritage Festival: Stacey, Maestra Logan, Laura and Alicia have volunteered to help. Halloween Jamboree and
Book Fair raised $4,000 for LeConte. Book fair sales totaled $1,500, of which 40% can be used to purchase books
for the classrooms. LeConte Science Night on Thursday 11/19/09: a motion was approved for the PTA to pay $100
for pizza, in order to feed the families who attended. PTA After School Classes: The performance classes will
perform on January 27. Sign up for new classes will take place in January, with classes beginning in February. Two
new classes will be offered: creative writing and Latin dance. Scholarships are available. Special thanks to Rosalba
Pacheco for the delicious food at our meetings.

School Governance Council (SGC)

The next meeting will be Wednesday, December 9, 6:30PM, LeConte library. The three most important items
discussed during the November meeting were students’ 2009 test scores, recruitment, and steps taken to improve our
school culture. Though there were some external factors that contributed to low achievement of certain grade levels,
such as combination classes and staff turnover mid-year, too many students are performing below and far below basic
on the California Standards Test. Principal Wilson and the teachers are seeking and implementing other practices to
address the needs of students who apparently need more direct instruction to succeed. Efforts are being made to recruit
families to LeConte and to educate more Latino families about LeConte’s Two-Way Immersion Program so that we
will have a minimum of 10 families enrolled for next year. A brochure has been developed and will be ready for
distribution during the BUSD Kindergarten Fair on Saturday, December 5. Thanks to the participation of more
teachers, the group was able to discuss and get feedback about teachers’ efforts to improve our school image and to
implement our Positive Behavior Support (PBS) Program. A copy of the three PBS rules, song, and the copies of the
new “Caught In the Act” cards are attached to this Lamppost.

SCHOOL-WIDE NEWS
Book Fairs By Barefoot Books
Look for the Barefoot Books book fair at our Latino Heritage Festival on Wednesday, December 16. And good
news for online shoppers – you can also buy these beautiful books online at
http://www.barefootbooks.com/marketplace/4248 (scroll down to the bottom and click the portal to LeConte). Both
online and at the bookfair, LeConte will receive 40% to 50% of the proceeds in order to buy books for our school.
Our thanks to parents Basia Lubicz and Celeste Low for setting up these book fair opportunities.

Barefoot Books is an independent bookseller founded by two mothers who wanted their children to have books that
would feed the imagination, while instilling a respect for diversity and a love of the planet. These books are known
for their engaging stories and beautiful artwork—and many are bilingual (English/Spanish). We know you will enjoy
looking at these books—and thanks for supporting LeConte through your book purchases.

Latino Literacy Project - Update

The first round of workshops for the LeConte Latino Family Literacy Program successfully took place this fall. The
program provides a space for Latino parents to engage in a variety of educational activities and dialogue on important
issues surrounding their children’s literacy development and learning. Up to this point, parents have borrowed three
bilingual books to share with their children: A New Sun, Just Like My Sister, and The Shark that Taught Me English.
Parents had small group discussions on family reading strategies, and shared how their children responded to the
books. Parents also attended a storytelling performance held at LeConte, participated in a Japanese paper marbling
activity, and created hand-made books in which they wrote memoirs about their children. There is a book raffle at each
workshop and childcare is provided. Workshops will begin again on February 6.

LeConte Community Kidz News

On November 12, eight LeConte students participated in the Latino Business Student Association’s Fourth Annual
“Catch a Dream Talent Show.” The students were selected to participate based on auditions that were held in late
October. Their performances included singing, dancing, rapping, and break-dancing. All of the students performed
with confidence, skill, and enthusiasm as they competed with performers from Oxford, Emerson, and Washington
schools. They all received certificates and one was the third place winner! Another highlight was hearing LeConte
announced as the trophy winner for the school with the highest number of performance points. Thanks to Charity
DaMarto, our after school coordinator, for helping organized this event and to Sadie Abrous, Alejandro Flores, Joni
Lee, Milan Martin, Kolya Popovic, Israel Romero, Mohammed Soumah, and Rebeca Torres for going on stage and
bringing home a trophy!

EcoMetro Guide – Great Coupon Book & LeConte Makes $10 Each
We are in the midst of another great LeConte fundraiser: selling EcoMetro Guides. We are asking each LeConte
student to try and secure orders for a minimum of three EcoMetro Guides. These terrific coupon books are
sold for $20 and we keep 50% ($10) per book. By reaching our goal of three books per child, we will raise almost
$10,000 for our school. Students are excited about selling the books, since the class that sells the most EcoMetro
Guides will earn a Pizza Party. Our EcoMetro Guide campaign will help the PTA support key programs at
LeConte, including field trips and equipment benefiting all students.

The EcoMetro Guide is a coupon book, directory, and source of inspiration. Save hundreds of dollars while
exploring the community and supporting local, sustainable businesses. LeConte parents like using the coupons to
visit museums or do other family-friendly activities with their children, buying groceries at a discount, or for
discount travel on Amtrak, among many other options.

Here are some ways to help sell EcoMetro Guides:

• Announce the sale at your work place. Display a copy of the book to show your colleagues.
• Set up a sales table in front of a busy store (with permission from the merchants).

LeConte Lamppost 3
• Order similar guides for your friends and family in Portland OR, Seattle WA, Minneapolis/St. Paul MN,
Denver CO and San Jose/Santa Cruz - it’s a great gift!
• E-mail your family, friends and neighbors about your school and the EcoMetro Guide fundraiser. Talk about
it on Facebook, Twitter or other social networking sites.
• Use the order form and envelope (available at the office) for multiple orders.

Our fundraiser ends December 16th. Order forms and unsold books must be turned in to Donna in the office no later
than December 16th. You will receive the copies you ordered after you give your order form to the office. Please
make checks payable to: LeConte PTA. Questions? Contact Cynthia Dambach, LeConte’s EcoMetro Campaign
Coordinator, at (510) 457-6938 or cdambach@gmail.com.

The Go Green Lunchboxes are here!!! (All but the camo print, which should arrive the next few days.)
Parents can pick up lunchboxes in the office from Donna. Thanks for your support of this little fundraiser.

Class News
Family Science Night on Thursday, Nov. 19: Thanks to the leadership of Dana Blanchard, fifth grade teacher,
working with fifth grade teacher Luis Argueta, our science teacher Linsay Klim, and our fifth grade students, this
event was a great success. The activities were plentiful, engaging, and fun, and several families visited the Planetarium
more than once. The attached photos are glimpse of the learning and hands-on activities that families experienced.

Teaching and learning mathematics with pattern blocks: To help students recognize and understand patterns,
shapes, and attributes, many teachers use pattern blocks. The attached photos show kindergarten students in Ms.
Roberts’s class and second grade students in Ms. Logan’s class. The kindergarten students were making A/B pattern
that are later extended to more complex patterns, such as ABCCDAB, etc. Learning to see patterns helps students not
only make predictions and understand sequence but also helps them see relationships between numbers. Ms. Logan’s
students were creating geometric designs that they later had to identify according to shapes, such as six trapezoids,
four hexagons, and so on. Students were also asked by a partner to create shapes based on oral directions only.

Steps to Improve Achievement

To improve the achievement of our lowest performing students, Principal Wilson and the classroom teachers will be
working on developing lesson plans and teaching strategies that provide all students access to understanding and
applying their lessons taught. This means that teaching objectives will be more explicit and clear to students, that all
teaching objectives will be standards-based, and that students should be able to state what they are learning and why
they are learning it.

Our staff has created a new school mission, which answers three questions related to achievement: What is it we
expect students to learn? How will we know if they are learning it? and What will we do to ensure success? Our
mission will be posted in classrooms and throughout the school, and all staff members will be striving to make the
mission visible by their actions in the classrooms and school-wide.

LeConte’s Revised School Mission: Our students will meet or exceed grade level standards in an engaging, safe
environment where learning is meaningful and students are valued as learners and individuals. We will use diverse
tools and hands-on activities to guide instruction and holistic and appropriate forms of assessment and intervention
to ensure students are learning. We will know if we are succeeding when students can communicate and perform
their knowledge in a variety of ways. Finally, we are committed to recognizing and communicating the positive in
each individual student.

Berkeley Public Education Fund Awards

LeConte received approximately $7500 in awards from Berkeley Public Education Fund. Most of the awards will be
used to purchase supplemental reading materials and literature for our students. A portion of Principal Wilson’s award
will be used to purchase professional development literature and research materials to improve instruction. Teachers

4 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
will learn more about ways to differentiate instruction and ways to infuse test taking skills while teaching the grade
level standards. Thanks to the following grant recipients for their efforts to bring resources to our school Ms. Aguas,
Ms. Barer, Ms. Bernal, Ms. Citrin, Mr. Gopez, and Ms. Venuto and the parents who also assisted with writing the
grants, Ms. Suzanne Moore and Ms. Basia Lubiz.

Positive Behavior Support

Our first steps toward implementation of this program included revising our “Caught in the Act” cards;
introducing students to the three rules now being used district wide: be respectful, be responsible (solve your own
problems), and be safe (make good decisions); developing and teaching students an additional song created by Ms.
Bernal that includes the three rules; reviewing and practicing how to line up safely on the playground; and posting the
three rules that feature our school mascot, the Panda, demonstrating each rule. Last month’s Celebrate LeConte
Assembly was a hit because our special guest “Panda” danced and paraded on the stage as our mascot was introduced
to the audience of screaming, laughing, excited children. Thanks again to the outstanding performance of the person
behind the costume. Five of out teachers held another assembly this past Monday to introduce the three rule song.
Thanks to Ms. Bernal for coordinating this effort and to Ms.Venuto, Ms. Blanchard, Ms. Cross, Mr. Zuniga, and Ms.
Sisneros for holding the signs and helping our students learn the lyrics. A copy of this song is attached along with
pictures of the Panda modeling the rules.

Free Cooking Classes for Parents at LeConte, January 14-February 11

Five weeks of free cooking and nutrition classes will be offered at LeConte every Thursday beginning January 14
through February 11, 2010. Space is limited, so you must sign up. These classes have been offered twice before at
LeConte and were both popular and fun. Here’s what to expect: hands-on cooking classes and delicious, healthy
recipes; useful nutrition information and shopping tips; advice on getting your kids to eat more fruits and vegetables; a
Junior Cooking Club for your kids while you’re in class. For more information call (510) 644-6710.

Sally Foster Orders Ready for Pick Up

The orders have arrived and are now in the main office ready for pick up. We have learned from past experience that
the best distribution method is for LeConte parents and guardians to pick them up directly from the office. Thank you
again for supporting our school through this fundraiser!

English Classes
Classes for adults who want to learn English began last Thursday, October 24th. The classes are held in Room 201 and
will be offered from 6:00 to 8:00PM every Thursday evening at least until February 2010, depending upon the
attendance. We want to acknowledge our PTA for making the classes possible by paying the costs of the classes and
childcare.

Enhance Your Child’s Learning at Home With Free Educational Software

Berkeley Unified School District has arranged for elementary students to have free access to the Compass Learning
educational software, which you can easily access from home or school. This software is aligned with state and
national standards and provides a stimulating (and fun!), customized learning environment for each child. Your child
should have brought home a personalized letter describing the software and how your child can get started. The letter
contained your exact user name and password, but most follow a standard format: Compass Learning is at
www.childu.com. User Name: LeCFirstNameLastInitial. Password: FirstInitialLastInitial School: BUSD
For example, John Smith has a user name of LeCJohnS and a password of js. Contact August Fern at
august.fern@gmail.com if you are having difficulties logging in or would like to set up a parent account to monitor
your student's progress.

Tour Guides Needed to Show LeConte to Prospective Parents

LeConte parents are needed to help facilitate school tours. The tours will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from
8:30AM to 10:00AM, November 16 to December 17 and January 5 to February 4. School visits are offered to all
incoming kindergarten and other families new to BUSD. We are seeking volunteers who feel comfortable answering

LeConte Lamppost 5
questions, reassuring families about the kindergarten experience, and explaining what they love about LeConte. If you
are available to lead a tour, please contact our PTA President, Jill Wang, at jillwang@att.net or 510-647-5012.

Lost & Found Clean Out Dates – Please Label Clothes!

It’s amazing how clothing piles up in our Lost & Found Collection. If you think your child may be missing a
sweatshirt, jacket, or other item, please check the Lost & Found soon! Items in Lost & Found are scheduled to be
donated to a shelter at the following times: Winter Break, March 1, and May 1. Do the outerwear items have your
child’s name on them? Laundry-safe markers are an easy way to label sweatshirts and jackets. Inexpensive iron-on
name labels are also available online.

Email News: Are you on LeConte’s Listservs?

We encourage all LeConte families to join one of our school listservs in order to get the latest school news. is now up
and running! We have two moderated listservs – one for announcements only, as well as an announcements +
discussion listserv. To join either group, please visit our website, www.leconteonline.org, and follow the links on the

Opt out of image sharing
On many occasions, we use both photography and video to record images of our students participating in educational, enrichment,
and just plain fun activities. In most cases, use of the images enhances the learning for the child and helps them to claim
ownership in the school. Photos may be printed in the Lamppost, hung on the walls at school, or posted on the website. Small
video clips may be posted on the school website or hosted by a webservice like YouTube. Your child's name will not be attached
to their online image.

If for any reason you do NOT want your child's image (or your image) used in this manner, please return this form to Principal
Wilson. No action is required if you are comfortable with your child's image being used. For an example, please see "LeConte

MEET OUR WONDERFUL STAFF
In each issue of the Lamppost, we are pleased to introduce you to a few members of LeConte’s talented staff.

Virginia Louie
Second Grade Teacher, Room 103

I am a second generation Chinese American from Stockton, California. I love the rich
ethnic diversity of the LeConte community. Each year I learn so much from my
students. I would say that the most important lesson in life is to keep an open mind.
It wasn’t until I had my own children that I realized how much I love teaching. I learn
so much from children as they allow me to rediscover the world with them.

Deborah Barer
First Grade Teacher, Room 104

I spent half of my teaching career at a private school teacher-run collective. LeConte

has been my home away from home for all of my public school experience. I enjoy
the magic of children learning to read and the diversity that is embraced here.

I am a mother of three and my husband and I write music together that represents
many genres. Most recently, we completed a CD called “World Blues” that was partially recorded in Senegal. We also
have two YouTube videos of “Moraima” singing with Bass Culture; a reflection of pop and “neo soul.” Moraima is
the daughter of Ms. Logan, one of LeConte’s second grade teachers.

Juan Zuñiga
Resource Specialist

I became a teacher because I enjoy working with children who have special needs,
and I feel I have a responsibility to advocate for this unique student population.
When I was in school, my favorite subject was mathematics because as a second
language learner, mathematics was easier to understand than English. Mrs. Bracken
was my most inspirational teacher because she taught the importance of respect for
every one in our diverse fifth grade class of Native American, Mexican, and White
students. Seeing a student feel good after learning something new and helping students understand that through
teamwork obstacles are easier to understand and overcome are what I most enjoy about teaching.
