Re: Request for Qualifications for Architectural Design Services, The Battery
Conservancy
Dear Pat,
We are pleased to present our proposal for Executive Architect for The Battery
Playspace. It is an exciting opportunity to work with you and your team to continue
your efforts in creating a world class park at The Battery. W Architecture and
Landscape Architecture, together with our team would be honored to work
with Frank Gehry to bring his vision into fruition. As architects and landscape
architects, we can integrate the ecological with physical form to bring it all to
life.
As Executive Architect, W Architecture is well versed in the procedures and
processes required to build in NYC. We have completed projects for the DDC,
EDC, various BIDS and private developers. We have worked with world renowned
architects including TEN Arquitectos and Christian de Portzamparc. We have
also worked with the Department of Recreation and Parks and are currently on
their list of selected design firms.
We are augmenting our team with individuals and firms who will provide
specialized experience in carrying out this complex project. We are joining with
our studio mate, Peter Pran + H, to bring Scott Loikits to the project. Scott has
completed construction documents for the MOMA expansion and the Whitney
Museum expansion with Renzo Piano Workshop. He will be the project architect
for the team working with our project manager, Dragana Zoric to translate the
ideas of Frank Gehry into complete drawings for the Battery Playspace. Dragana
has managed projects for many parks including the Edge Park in Williamsburg and
the Troy Riverfront Park where she is working with many of the sub consultants
proposed for this project. The translation from idea to reality requires an
understanding and a commitment to the project sensibility, as many factors will
need to be negotiated and resolved as the project progresses. We look forward
to learning more about the project.
Sincerely,

greater awareness of the speci al qual i ti es of each space by rei magi ni ng the boundari es
between natural and man made, new and ol d, l and and water.
W is an interdisciplinary woman-owned studio which builds on links
between architecture and landscape architecture to create spaces that
engage both nature and urbanism. Our office is in New York, and we
have projects in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the United States.
W is organized around the commitment of Principal Barbara Wilks to
quality design and active participation in all levels of the firms projects.
With over 35 years experience, she believes that effective leadership
on complex projects requires vision, a collaborative and talented team,
effective communication, and persistent commitment to finding solutions
to project goals and aspirations. The staff of fifteen is organized in a
flexible studio manner and includes experienced project managers, urban
designers, landscape architects and LEED accredited professionals, who
engage in each project through its successful completion.
W works closely with the team to achieve consensus on an authentic
and delightful design which combines strong conceptual ideas with
environmental concerns. Projects are often complex involving multiple
constituencies with differing points of view, on challenging sites with
sensitive environmental conditions and infrastructure. Our creative
outlook on what exists allows us to maximize the value of what is there,
turn constraints into opportunities and expand project possibilities.
W is committed to thorough collaboration across traditional design
boundaries. We bring together a team of specialists tailored to the
needs of each project. Those might include artists, lighting designers,
ecologists, engineers and economists. Research into the history of the
place and the processes that have shaped it, coupled with analysis of
opportunities and constraints enables creative solutions which align
finance, policy, sustainability and design.
Ws work seeks to engage its visitors. A synthesis of landscape and
architectural design facilitates the transition between regional planning,
urban infrastructure, public spaces, individual buildings, and private
landscapes. Projects range in scale from private homes to educational
campuses to entire urban neighborhoods. Our designs have received top
national design awards in landscape architecture and urban and regional
design in the ten years since the firms founding, and have been published
in The New York Times, Global Architect, Landscape Architecture

WEST HARLEM PIERS PARK AND MASTER PLAN
NEW YORK NY
The West Harlem Piers Park is a dramatic transformation of
space that had been lost to the community for many years. Our
design leadership over a nine year period terminated a 30 year
struggle by the community to regain their waterfront and renew
their connection to the river. A narrow 69,000 sf parking lot has
been expanded through creative planning into a 105,526 sf park
that re-imagines the threshold between the city and the Hudson
in a sustainable and meaningful way.

The site, no wider than a tennis court, between 129th and
133rd Streets along the Hudson River had been cut off from
the neighborhood by the adjacent traffic and highway above.
This point of access to the river, historically a natural cove
between adjacent bluffs, and more recently an industrial port,
had become a paved and fenced parking lot. The project intent
was to create a gathering place on the Hudson to reconnect
the residents to the water. Working closely with a strong group
of community activists, our design team held a series of public
meetings that resulted in a master plan for the adjacent 40
block area. The first phase of the plan was the creation of West
Harlem Piers Park which included transforming the adjacent
road to promote pedestrian and bicycle access, new community
piers, and the total re-envisioning of the parking lot.
The park design is based on the idea of the cove The park form
is a result of both the forces from the city as well as the water.
Elements of the park are scattered and sorted by size as if left
by waves. The piers themselves follow land formation patterns
rather than historic pier configurations. The piers provide
various water-related activities including fishing, excursion
boating, ecological awareness, and general recreation. The
plant material creates two ecologies: a woodland with mixed
deciduous trees, low understory and perennial ground cover,
and the cove which features colorful 300 foot long seaside
perennial beds at either end of the park and a sloped lawn for
multiple activities. Materials are locally sourced, including
reuse of cobbles and granite blocks from the site.
The park involved phased construction, to narrow the existing
adjacent highway without disrupting traffic flow. Approvals
were required from the City Parks, the Design Commission, the
State Department of the Environment, and the Army Corps of
Engineers. Mitigation for the piers involved the installation of
reef balls on the floor of the river to provide for fish habitat.

TIDE POINT
BALTIMORE MD
Credited with turning a 15 acre derelict old industrial site into
the epicenter of Baltimores Digital Harbor, this project is
about transformation. Tide Point was the site of one of Procter
& Gambles main soap producing plants. Now the renovated
buildings house high tech companies and institutions. Once, its
boardwalk was off-limits to the public--- now the site opens to
the water and views beyond. Our role in the project included
master planning and coordinating public easement through
the site, designing new construction for site amenities, and
landscape architecture.
The landscape of the site creates an environment that draws
neighborhood residents to the waterfront and also serves the
needs of the office campuscreating flexible event spaces
as well as places to meet, eat and rest. In the summer, the
fog machine works to cool pedestrians, and hammocks and
Adirondack chairs dot the promenade and waterfront plaza.
The site plan provides clear vehicular and pedestrian pathways
with easements to Baltimore City for the public access to the
waterfront. To meet the needs of the historic certification,
the campus design merges the tidewater with industrial. Site
furniture is created from concrete and industrial remnants.
Many industrial site features are integrated into the overall
design. The project opened in 2004 and has received numerous
awards and has been featured in many publications. It is
certified historic by the Department of the Interior.

The Williamsburg waterfront has been dominated by industry
and its relics for over a century--making it largely off limits to
the public. New zoning is changing the public interface with the
waters edge by increasing density and emphasizing waterfront
access. The Edge park seeks to bring people to the river
and link the ecosystem with the fabric of the community. As
landscape architect for both the new residential towers and the
public waterfront park, we have the challenge of ensuring that
the towers act not as symbolic fences blocking public access
and views of the East River and Manhattan but as gateways
to the river with corridors providing visual connection to the
iconic skyline.
Our plan unites both sides of the river by using the piers to
re-orient views across - especially directed toward the Empire
State Building. The design emphasizes the confrontation of
forces at the water edge and encourages public use. Here,
the city grid and the rivers ecosystem converge, mingle, and
clash: the road turns into a pedestrian greenway, a garage is
surmounted with a sloping lawn, piers reach gently into the
water from deep within the park and stone riverbank contrasts
with concrete bulkhead. This blurring of the boundaries
between land and water extends the waterfront benefits inland
to the community.
The synthesis and separation of private and public space,
and architecture and ecology required a complex series of
collaborations with community groups, the developer, the
city government, and engineers. This former industrial site is
now 50% permeable, planted with many native species and
part of the LEED Silver rating for the project. The park was a
critical part of the approvals for the project, and maintenance
agreements were negotiated with the City Parks Department.
The new piers underwent extensive reviews by the Corps of
Engineers and the Department of Environmental Protection.

The Troy Riverfront Park is a 4.4 acre waterfront located in
the heart of Troy, New York. Due to problems with overgrown
vegetation and grading which obstructs visibility, the park is
not well used despite its prime location on the Hudson. This
project seeks to open the park to the city, creating new access
corridors to catalog the interaction between visitors and the
downtown, to improve universal accessibility, and promote a
more sustainable, attractive gathering place.
The project is in two parts: a master plan and a first phase
implementation. A series of public meetings establish a
program and enabled the creation of three alternative reuse
plans for the park. The plans were developed directly from the
community members, stakeholders, and advisory committee
feedback. Several existing monuments and memorials need to
remain in place, and are worked into the new schemes. From
further community input, a final master plan was developed
which provides improved connectivity to the city and historic
center, a better home for the farmers market and other events,
a new maritime and visitors center, added boating facilities,
an improved amphitheater, universal access and a more
sustainable ecology.

The new Lower School Science Center at Bryn Mawr School
is an addition to a Marcel Breuer campus. The new building
springs from a new wall positioned to divide the developed
campus from the undeveloped woods. The entrance canopy to
the science lab punches through this wall onto a tree house-like
deck. The planting behind the wall gives the deck entrance a
feeling of being removed from the school -- a tree house in
the woods from which to observe nature. Rainwater is funneled
to the entry garden, where it is released down a rain chain. The
spiral ground pattern is based on a logarithmic growth form. A
greenhouse, built-in aquarium, garden areas, and bird feeders
all contribute to a hands-on learning environment. Collaboration
with a local artist resulted in a DNA climbing sculpture in front of
the wall as a part of the childrens play area. A butterfly garden
lines the pergola approach to the structure. Small Tiles of local
animals are embedded in the wall.

W has LEED certified staff with knowledge of the current rating system proficient in cataloging the initiatives required
for the LEED certification process. The design process must be integrated in itself, and include all the professionals as
well as public and private organizations. Sustainability begins with the design of larger environmental systems like wind
and solar harvesting, water reuse, and consideration of waste reducing methods.. A sustainable design must integrate
human and natural systems alike, so that all function coherently, efficiently and productively to improve the environment
for future generations.

Peter Pran, FAIA, MNAL has enjoyed an extensive career spanning fifty years, beginning working under
world-renowned architect Mies van der Rohe. Since receiving his Masters in Architecture from the
Illinois Institute of Technology in 1969, Mr. Pran has been leading designs in a senior capacity with top
firms like Ellerbe Becket and NBBJ to create innovative structures in Sweden, South Korea, Singapore,
and the United States that have garnered numerous accolades and international notoriety. Evidence of
his designs closer to home include the New York Psychiatric Institute in Washington Heights as well as
an academic complex in SUNY Binghamton. Mr. Pran will be managing the Playspace project and
oversee the development activities of our staff.
Young-Kyoon Jeong, AIA, KIRA received his Masters in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania
in 1989 and subsequently practiced architecture under Mitchell and Giurgola Partners and Bower Lewis
Thrower before presently serving as CEO of Heerim. He has overseen and designed several large-scale

Peter Pran, FAIA, Design Partner

Peter Pran + H Architects was founded in 2011 in New York City, in collaboration between Peter Pran
from USA and Norway and YoungKyoon Jeong of Heerim Architects and Planners from Seoul.
Peter Prans work stands as a testament not only to the influence of Modernity, but the work of an
internationally acclaimed architect whose designs build on a fragmentary aesthetic of floating, planar
elements that seem to deny gravity and blur distinctions between inside and outside space. Prans use
of curved surfaces in close juxtaposition to orthogonal lines creates considerable tension within and
between spaces.
His work includes prominent projects that span the globe from Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, and
South Korea to Norway, Spain Italy, Netherlands, and Seattle, New York, Chicago. These projects cover
Prans time as Design Principal in Charge at NBBJ and Ellerbe Becket, and his work as a young project
designer with Mies van der Rohe and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.
Examples of his extraordinary ability to design spaces that are not only rational but also experiment with
more complex forms are the New York State Psychiatric Institute, the New York Police Academy, and
most recently, the Telenor Headquarters scheme in Norway, and the Sail@Marina Bay in Singapore. The
Telenor building alone is proof of Prans ability to choreograph a multinational design team through a
complex process of experimentation, discovery, and execution.
Peter Pran has won 12 competitions during the last 10 years (including Seoul Dome, NY Police Academy,
Viking Stadium with Link, Newspaper Headquarters in Oslo, and Vlerenga Stadium) and he has
received 2 AIA National AIA Design Honor Awards (one being Telenor) and 12 AIA NY Design Awards.

His Telenor Headquarters was also published in the most recent "Phaidon Atlas of 21st Century World
Architecture", which presents the best architecture in the world of the last ten years. Four of his NYC
buildings were presented in the book "New York 2000", and his Sail at Marina Bay in Singapore was
presented in the book "Architecture in Asia Now" that included the best new buildings in Asia. Four
monographs have been published on his work, with introductions by Fumihiko Maki, Odile Decq, Daniel
Libeskind, Thom Mayne, Christian NorbergSchulz, Juhani Pallasmaa, and Kenneth Frampton (Maki and
Mayne have received the Pritzker Prize).

He has been professor of Architecture over 25 years in 10 different universities; including 8 years at
University of Illinois in Chicago and 8 years at the University of Kansas as full Professor.

He has lectured in AIA and other Conferences and in universities in many USA cities, and in Sao Paulo,
Buenos Aires, Moscow, Toronto, Paris, Jakarta, Melbourne, Sydney, Seoul, Oslo, etc.

Nurikum Square (IT Samsung Complex) in Seoul was designed by Peter Pran and Paul Davis in NBBJ
together with Mr. Jeong of Heerim.

Academic Complex, State University of New York, Binghamton

Location: Binghamton, New York, USA
Area: 130,000 square feet
Designed in 1991, completed in 1998
Design Principal: Peter Pran (with Ellerbe Becket)

The goal of the client was to design, within tight budgetary constraints, a complex that would fit with
the campus while introducing a new spirit and high-quality architecture. The building serves as the new
main entrance and pedestrian gateway to the campus from the main parking areas. It also houses
SUNY Binghamtons School of Management, School of Nursing, School of Education and Human
Development, the Academic Computing Center, Undergraduate Admissions, Research Programs, a
shared lecture hall and classrooms. The selected three-story, two-building theme fits in with the
predominantly three-story buildings throughout the campus and provides the desired exterior identity
to the different departments. It creates a new image for a university that is emerging as a leading liberal
arts institution and one of the five top public universities in the nation.

New York Psychiatric Institute

Location: New York City, New York, USA
Area: 380,000 square feet
Designed in 1992, completed in 1998
Design Principal: Peter Pran (with Ellerbe Becket)

The New York Psychiatric Institute is located on an exceptionally fine urban site west of Riverside Drive.
It is connected to adjacent buildings in the Columbia Presbyterian Medical/Research Complex via
bridges across Riverside Drive. The prominent location of the site as one enters the city from the
George Washington Bridge allowed for a high-quality design that addressed key urban design and
community issues. The curved exterior glass wall to the west reflects the flow of traffic along the West
Side Highway; the stepped eastern facades along Riverside Drive define the arrival space and its specific
urban spatial character, along with an entry formed by an open plaza that leads to the existing natural
landscape south of the building.

Location: Berlin, Germany
Completed in 1969
Project Designer: Peter Pran (with Mies van der Rohe)

Peter Pran worked with Mies van der Rohe as a project designer on this museum for three years during
its major development. The museum itself is located on a major site near Potsdamer Platz, adjacent to
Matthiaskirche and near Scharouns Philharmonie. It has become one of the modern buildings that
define Berlin. The hall on the upper level is a column-free universal space enclosed by four glass walls
and surrounded by a terrace for sculpture displays. The lower floor presents the permanent collection,
as well as changing exhibits of international art and architecture.

Huracle Resort and Tedin Waterpark

Location: Cheonan, South Korea
Area: 56,716 square meters
Designed in 2007, completed in 2010
Design Principal: Young-Kyoon Jeong (with Heerim)

The water park and condominium project were planned to enhance the profile of the Cheonan General
Leisure and Tourism Complex, as well as attract the public. European-style buildings in pastel tones that
one finds arranged side-by-side in Nyhavn, Denmark were reflected in the condominium buildings;
aspects of the water park were inspired by the various characters and fairy tales of Hans Christian
Andersen. The function of the theme park was thus maximized with the ambience of a Mediterranean
resort.

LIGO: Catching A New Wave
World Science Festival
New York City
2010
For the 2010 World Science Festival in
New York City, the Laser Interferometer
Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO)
employed Light Projects to create an
experience in which visitors serve as the
connecting point between art and
sciences.
LIGO is a revolutionary new kind of
telescope designed and built to observe,
for the first time, ripples in the fabric of
space-time caused by massive cosmic
events. Light Projects created a dazzling
light sculpture to represent the deep
universe and designed simple lighting for
exhibit elements.
Simulating the effects of gravitational
waves on the interferometer, visitors
engaged in a form of interaction with the
light sculpture that caused disturbances,
resulting in out-of-phase fringe patterns
which visually transmitted into the light
sculpture.

Port Authority Bus Terminal
New York, NY

Host to thousands of
commuters and travelers on a
daily basis, Manhattans Port
Authority Bus Terminal relies
on a complex system of ramps
and gates for smooth
operations. Four ramps
spanning Ninth Avenue connect
the terminal with the region,
and the country, providing
access to the Lincoln Tunnel
and other roadways. The
pedestrian landscape beneath
these ramps was previously
shadowy and dismal. In 1995,
the Port Authority contacted

HtO Toronto
Harbourfront Parks
Toronto, Ontario

HtO Harbourfront Park in
Toronto was envisioned as a
connection between downtown
and Lake Ontario. Sustainable
design principles are
incorporated at every level and
include waterfront accessibility,
enhanced connections to the
city, forward-thinking ecological
design, integrated public art and
lighting design. The park design
by Claude Cormier and Janet
Rosenberg and Associates is a
series of experiences, the
roadside connection, floating
dunes, and finally, by the harbour,
a tiered esplanade reaching into
the water. During the day the
visitor is drawn to the water. At
night the focus shifts toward the
sparkling backdrop of the city. A
moonlight effect is layered with
color accents to create an
after-dark living theatre in the
dunes. Underwater
illumination gives the
appearance of a floating park.
We call the design HtO,
note Rosenberg and Cormier,
because it proposes a new
chemistry between Toronto
and the waterfront - a
fundamental change in the
relationship.

Highfield Childrens Garden In collaboration with Jennings, Inc. & Interactive Playco
Site Masters, Inc. worked with the Hamilton County Park District in Cincinnati, Ohio to
create a playful learning environment that encourages children to discover through the
exploration of their environment. The highlight of the garden is the Discovery Tree a
treasure trove of kid-sized spaces that beg to be climbed into and explored. It features
several levels, including a tree-top birds nest from which children can get a Birds-eye
view of the garden. The tree contains an array of playful details to discover at every turn,
from a gym shoed termite to a butterfly leaving its cocoon. The roots of the tree create
rooms to explore one of which is a bat cave, complete with bats hanging from the ceiling
and snakes hiding in crevices.
The tree is just the beginning of fun as children are welcomed to Frog and Toads Pond
complete with a sculpture of Frog and Toad. There are lily pads to play hopscotch on, a
giant Wizards hat to climb into, giant mushrooms to sit under, toad stools to sit on, a tree
stump bench to count the rings of the tree, a giant ant hill to climb inside, and a tea house
in Grandmas scent garden.

Cox Hall Childrens
Garden
In collaboration with Browning, Day, Mullins & Dierdorf Architects, Indianapolis, Indiana
The childrens garden is a small portion of a very large formal garden and is designed to
allow the children to learn about the plants by interacting with the environment. The play
area is designed to encourage passive, fantasy play. The kind of creative play area that
one comes to and ends up staying all day. No traditional play equipment is used to create
this playground. Natural objects and found materials are used to create climbing and
sliding opportunities. Willow tunnels, raised earth mounds, stream beds with bridges, pine
tree forests, a rabbit hole slide, a well and hand pump station, giant sand box, sun dials
and a miniature village are but a few of the elements that the children will have an
opportunity to explore amid the vegetation.

West Park
Carmel, Indiana Farm theme playground in partnership with Schmidt Associates
Architects - Site Masters, Inc. designed two unique play structures specifically for this site.
The main focal point of the park is a farm silo that sits on top of a play mound. At ground
level the silo has a corn climber, a grain chute, a vegetable/kid washer, accessible crawl
tunnel to a ground level slide, a crate climber, a secret cubby with hidden baby pigs, a talk
tube to the upstairs and a scarecrow manipulative panel. From inside the climber a child
may climb up the grain chute to an eight foot high platform. From this platform a child may
access two more tunnel slides, a coil climber and a cow bell interactive play panel.
A tractor play structure was designed to accommodate the needs of the pre-school age
children. The tractor has an accessible stairway up the center of the tractor to a large
platform where a child can sit a steer the tractor and shift the gears before going down the
double-wide slide. A crawl tunnel connects the back tires and an engine gear panel is
accessible from the ground level. The silo and tractor were designed by Site Masters, Inc.

Moffitt Village
Archaeology Playground, Hamilton County, Indiana
Phase I - This playground was designed to reflect the lives of the early Indians that
inhabited the Park site. The play structure is a lodge pole building on top of a raised earth
mound that is covered with rubber surfacing material. The mound is representative of the
mound building Indians as is the building. Two concrete slides are cast into the sides of
the mound. A skeleton climber, a boulder climber and rope climb are the climbing and
sliding elements. A section of the mound is cut away to expose an archaeology dig.
Replicas of fossils, bone fragments and pottery shards are cast into the concrete dig. The
lodge pole building is fabricated from concrete sculpted to resemble individual logs and
tree branches. A rattlesnake sculpture, designed by Site Masters is located at the
entrance to the play area.

accessible sand table. Water comes out of the crevices in the top of the boulder. A giant
mastodon tusk comes out of the sand and into the enclosing wall of the accessible transfer

combination with community built elements, the community was able to build and install a
unique play environment that was consistent with the desired theme. The play elements
include a composite play structure that resembles an old paddle-wheeler with smokestacks;
a boat ramp and dock, a turtle play sculpture and a large mouth bass play sculpture. The
community built the ramps and dock, did all of the ground preparation and pathways,
installed the large slabs of limestone that surround the play area and installed the play
equipment. Select members of the community assisted in sculpting the turtle and fish. The
poured in place rubber surfacing was installed by the park districts maintenance crew.

Grove Park
Playground
Grove Park Playground City of Wichita, Kansas
The Grove Park Playground is designed to teach the children about the plants, animals and
people that have lived and continue to live on the prairie. The park is situated along the
Chisholm River and the land was formerly occupied by the Wichita Indians. Site Masters
proposed creating an environment that begins at the beginning of ecological time when the
prairie was covered with the ocean. Fossil imprints representing the ocean floor were
created by art students. These images are imprinted onto the concrete sidewalk located at
the entrance to the park. This is the beginning of the time stream which carries you from one
element to another.
The playground has an Indian Lodge sandbox with fossils and mastodon bones to uncover.
There is a giant bison play sculpture that the children can climb inside and slide out of. A
replica of an old chuck wagon is poised along the Chisholm Trail markers. A farm silo play
structure represents the communities dependence on farming.
The second phase of development is to include native prairie grasses and flowers planted to
create small rooms where children can enter to discover the different textures, colors and
smells of the various plants. A dry stream bed is to be filled with ceramic images of plants
and animals that depend on the rain for life. The ceramic images are dull and colorless until
water that pumped by the children spills over it, then the images spring to life just like the
prairie after a rain.

Project Description
McLaren was retained to provide full site/civil,
structural, mechanical and electrical engineering
services for design of the new Sea Glass Carousel
ride at Battery Park City in lower Manhattan.
Not your ordinary Merry-Go-Round, the
Carousels unique design combines modern multi-
axis ride technology with state-of-the-art
multimedia projections, music and lighting.
Patrons will ride inside glittering and rainbow
hued translucent fish, which swim, swoop and
swerve through a simulated underwater
environment.
Key was to design a reliable and safe ride capable
of withstanding the rigors of an outdoor, ocean-
side environment. With a complex but
aesthetically satisfying design that protects its
electric machinery from the elements, the
Carousel is a stroke of technical mastery that
celebrates marine life one of the projects
primary catalysts.
McLarens Role
McLaren provided structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering for the ride system
while providing the site/civil work for the building site. The firm produced comprehensive
3D models of the ride and coordinated space, geometry and functional issues with the
various disciplines to ensure an integrated design. McLaren also performed motion and
velocity studies to ensure the ride was exciting and interesting while technically feasible.
The ride system includes individual lift and swivel mechanisms for each fish; onboard
turntables that rotate schools of the fish in a single grouping; and the main carousel,
which rotates the entire system. The machinery design utilizes electric motors (no
hydraulics), pinion-driven ring bearings, chain drives friction drives and tapered casters.
The center of the ride contains a large slip ring for power and signal distribution. The
structure resists cyclic ride stresses, patron loads, and earthquakes, and the system design
considers the semi-exterior environment in material selection and details of the assembly.
Finally, McLaren produced complete bid documents for the ride, including both
comprehensive design drawings and a technical performance specification. We also
advised on and assisted in the pre-qualification of interested vendors.

Project Description
The Nassal Company and several other specialty
contractors retained McLaren to engineer exhibits,
rockwork environments and signage at the 180-acre
Las Vegas Springs Preserve. The Preserve, a
subsidiary of the Nevada State Museum and Historical
Society, is an interactive museum that takes you
through the history and culture of Las Vegas.
By utilizing live animal exhibits, realistic natural
exhibits and habitats, never before seen artifacts, and
hands-on education, the Preserve tells the history, pre-
history, and natural history of the area, as well as the
fragility of nature and our role in protecting it. The complex includes a Desert Living
Center museum area devoted to sustainable living, as well as exterior gardens and a
network of walking paths.
Flash Flood Exhibit
McLarens Role
Hired as a structural expert, McLaren provided engineering support for incorporation of the
exhibits, rockwork, and signs into the existing Preserve structure. This coordination of
elements included accounting for the possibility of natural factors such as wind and
earthquakes. It also considered the daily
wear and tear of patron interaction.
Since exhibit design occurred concurrently
with the Preserves construction, McLaren
performed a facility impact evaluation to
demonstrate how the structural systems
needed for the exhibits affected the
structure. The need to ensure that all new
systems introduced to the Preserve were
adequately and safely supported was vital.
Another notable design challenge was
mimicking organic shapes and structures using modern technologies and construction
methods. The exhibits and rockwork were constructed using a variety of materials,
including shotcrete, concrete, wood, glass, steel, and aluminum, and the key was to make
the synthetic exhibits look real and, in some cases, replicate the technology of past eras.

Project Description
The Tree House is the sculptural centerpiece of
the new Sobella Retail space of The Crystals at
City Center in Las Vegas. It is housed in an
innovative mall space with angular rooflines and
two stories of shopping. The Tree House is a
free form, wood clad structure that seems to defy
gravity, sitting precariously on a narrow base,
spreading out to envelope part of the mezzanine
floor, and then reaching away from its support to
the skylight above. It appears to be made from
horizontal and vertical slices of curved wood, and
contains illuminated faces. The upper oculus
allows light to shine inside the encapsulated bar,
which bulbs out from the mezzanine.
McLarens Role
McLaren provided complete structural engineering
for the Tree House structure down to the main
floor, the bulbed-out mezzanine floor, and support
from the roof. The structural design considered
weights of steel, wood cladding, lighting,
electrical wiring, sprinklers, and pendant lighting.
It also considered earthquakes. The irregular
member size and form made the design process extremely challenging their orientations
were based on aesthetics, not structural efficiency and the system behaves like a large, 3-D
moment frame.
Each member and connection experiences unique stresses, so each had to be analyzed
individually. The connections of the secondary ring members to the primary vertical
members were accomplished with bolts inside tapped holes, hiding the connection from view.
Connections consist of four, six, eight, or ten bolts; connections with excessive forces
required field welds. The shallow connection geometry (5 deep holes spaced only 2 apart
vertically) required stiffener plates to span across the primary members inside the joint,
further complicating fabrication. Electrical wiring, recessed lighting units, and sprinkler
pipes had to be installed along and through members without affecting the clean finished
profiles, further complicating member intersections.
The cantilevered oculus needed to be supported from wire ropes at the roof in order to
make the framing work within the size constraints. There are four splayed wire ropes with
turnbuckles, attached via ball joints to the roof truss members and via swivel hoist rings to
the Tree House.
The main floor structure was reinforced to support the Tree Houses weight. The mezzanine
floor was framed with steel beams and a lightweight concrete slab that receives the upper
primary members and delivers these loads onto the mezzanine floor framing. These
connections involved severely curved members bolted via thick base plates onto receiving
beams.
The Tree House is a very ambitious design in which each piece affects every other piece, and
no two pieces are alike. The fabricator produced precise steel and wood elements that fit
perfectly when assembled on site, and the result is a one-of-a-kind sculptural assembly of
wood elements that defies gravity.

The purpose of this project was to eliminate the sewage back-up in the lawn area
and to correct the drainage problem in the playground adjacent to the comfort
station. Sewage back-up in the lawn area occurs when the comfort station facilities
are heavily used (this usually occurs when there is an event on the plaza). The
drainage problem in the playground has been attributed to a blockage of the storm
sewer outfall into the bay.
Also, the comfort station needed to be brought to into ADA compliance. The
existing entrances into the restrooms were not wide enough to accommodate
wheelchairs.
The parks infrastructure (i.e. the sewers and comfort station) were restored to
handle the intended capacity that was originally intended. The comfort station in
particular was designed to meet current ADA standards with minor beautification
done to the exterior.
