33. Catch Us If You Can
The most important lesson that I have learnt from the novel Form 5, Catch Us If You Can by Catherine
MacPhail is do not judge a book by its cover. This novel shows us that we should not judge a person only by his
or her appearance.
We can see this through Rory. Even though he was a young boy, he was very reliable and responsible for
his grandfather, Granda. Even the doctor who treated Granda was very concerned whether Rory could take care
of Granda because Granda had a failing memory and always misplacing things. He took care of Granda like
buying him his lunch and accompanying him most of the time. He even gave up football so that he could be at
home with Granda.
When they ran away from the Castle Street home and Rachnadar, they met a family. Granda did not trust
Sammy and called him 'tinker'. But as they were about to run away from the authorities who were looking for
them, it was Sammy and his family who helped them. After a few days with them, Granda accepted them and
trusted them. Sammy's family gave them food and shelter and later took them to a railway station.
In one incident, while Rory and Granda were at a petrol station filling in the gas, Rory thought the attendant
Rab, was going to hand them over to the authorities. However, Rab and his friends helped Rory and Granda by

giving them shelter and food plus arranging for them to travel to Liverpool to meet Rory's father. They had very
good intentions all along.
In short, we should always have good thoughts about other people. Do not judge them from their
appearance but their actions and good deeds.
