ORDER OF OPERATIONS

OBJECTIVES:
1) Evaluate expression without exponents using order of operations.
2) Evaluate expressions with exponents using order of operations.

Mathematics obeys certain principles in order to ensure clarity in the
evaluation of fundamental operations. Take the case of
these three pupils. They have been arguing about the
correct answer. Help them answer the items following the
rules of order of operations.

Ashley, Genevia, and Angeline simplified the expressions 3 + 8 x 6 4,
but each of them got a different result.

Given the expressions above, you might be confused on how to
solve it. Should you 8 by 6 then subtract 4 then add the difference by 3?
Or should you add 3 and 8 and multiply the sum by 8?
Mathematics made rules so that you will not be confused when you
are faced with such expressions. These rules are called order of
operations.
The order of operations can be summarized by the acronym
PEMDAS.
P Parentheses or any other grouping symbol
E Exponents
M multiplication/D division
Ashleys answer
3 + 8 x 6 4
(3 + 8 ) x ( 6 4 )
11 x 2
22

Genevias answer
3 + 8 x 6 4
(3 + 8) X 6 4 =
11 X 6 4
66 4

A Addition/ S - subtraction
This means that one should solve for expressions inside grouping
symbols first. The exponents should be solved after. Multiplication or
division should follow. Addition or subtraction follows.
Do multiplication or division, and addition or subtraction as they
appear from left to right.
Most number sentences do not contain all operations, but still, we
should know what to do first and next in solving expressions.
Lets go back to the solutions of Ashley, Genevia, and Angeline,
which solution is correct? By using these rules we can see that Angeline
was right. Angeline solved the problem correctly. First, she multiplied.
Then, she added from left to right.
Study these equations.
6 + 8 2 = 10 3 x 2 + 12 4 = 9 2 (6 4) = 22
6 + 4 = 10 6 + 3 = 9 24 2 = 22

1. Divide first. 1. Multiply first. 1. Do the subtraction inside
2. Then add. 2. Divide. the parenthesis first.
3. Then add. 2. Then the subtraction outside
the parenthesis.

Other examples:

A. Two operations in parenthesis
Simply 4 + (6 + 12 3)
4 + (6 + 12 3) ----------- Divide within the parentheses.
4 + (6 + 4) -------------------- Add within the parentheses.
4 + 10 -------------------------- Add.
14

B. Exponents and Parenthesis.
Simplify (4 x 3) x 6 2
(4 x 3) x 6 2 ----------------- Rewrite exponent in parentheses.
(4 x 9) x 6 2 ------------------ Multiply within the parentheses.
36 x 6 2 ---------------------- Rewrite exponents.
36 x 6 4 ----------------------- Multiply
216 4 -------------------------- Divide.
