TERMS & REFERENCE

Maceration: Some herbal preparations call for maceration, as it is one way to extract delicate or highly volatile herbal essences "cold" and thus
preserve their signature more accurately
Absolute: are concentrated aromatic oils extracted from plants. Typically, absolutes are used in perfumery rather than for aromatherapy, because they
are extracted using chemical solvents, usually hexane (used to make a concrete and then ethyl alcohol (to remove the plant waxes and other
constituents.
Category Type: The fragrance categories which appear here have been selected because of their popularity. !t is easiest to classify and group
materials according to their similarities.
Citruses: "its of peels can be used, or for a more concentrated effect, use the essential oils. #itrus materials have a cooling effect and are
more volatile than any other natural aromatic. "ecause they evaporate faster, they make very effective "top notes" in potpourri blends. #itrus
notes blend well with florals, herbals, mints, spices, and fruit blends.
Flower/Flora: $loral notes blend well with every other category.
Herb: these materials are pungent, sharp and aromatic. They add a slightly bitter effect to a potpourri blend. %erbs can be used dried or as
oils. They blend well with florals, fruits, and resins.
Menthol: have distinctive, cool, bree&y and refreshing odors. 'ven though they are valuable in making perfumes, they must be used with
discretion( otherwise they will overpower weaker odors. )ried mint materials are good for bulk and subtle effects. $or more intensity, oils
should be used. *enthol blends should be tried with citrus, spices, and florals.
Resins !osses an" roots: This category may be one you are not familiar with. Take the time to get to know these dry, low, sweet materials.
They are also fixatives and are an invaluable aid to the perfumer. +esins, mosses, and roots blend well with all other materials and do a
wonderful ,ob of setting off the other materials
Trees woo" an" bar#: Trees are not only beautiful, many of them are also fragrant. They blend nicely with florals, animal scents, and
resins.
Spices: The materials in this category are well-known for their use in perfume and, of course, in cooking. The singular sweet, rich, deep, and
warm odors of spices add a special touch. Their interesting and varied shapes are e.ually helpful to the potpourri artisan. Spices blend
exceptionally well with woods, resin and root fragrances.
$rasses see"s an" shrubs: The scents from hays and grasses are light, dry, delicate, faint, fragile, and slightly sweet. Their fragrance is
neutral and can be used in large .uantities to create subtle effects and to add bulk.
Caution: /ot only are some oils 0stronger0 than others but on occasion oils from some sources may not be pure and the impurities can cause
skin irritation. 1nother reason for skin reaction is that some oils are 0hot0 and may cause irritation especially on sensitive areas or those with
sensitive skin. To avoid such situations it is always prudent to dilute oils with a carrier if in doubt and to perform a basic skin test if there is
any .uestion.
A%oi"&: some plants and oils should be avoided all together because of their negative effect on the human body.
Carrier 'il, also known as base oil or vegetable oil, is used to dilute essential oils and absolutes before they are applied to the skin in
massage and aromatherapy. They are so named because they carry the essential oil onto the skin. #arrier oils do not contain a concentrated
aroma, unlike essential oils, though some, such as olive, have a mild distinctive smell. They do not evaporate like '2s do, and carrier oils can
go rancid where '2s will not.
Note: 1romatherapists categori&e essential oils according to a fragrance note: top, middle, base (bottom. 1 good blend is harmonious, balances and
well rounded.
Top notes are those that are most volatile and are the first that we smell. They are light and fresh, and tend to dissipate .uickly - perhaps
within minutes, but can last up to about four hours. 'ssential oils classified as top notes tend to be uplifting and refreshing.
Mi""le notes then appear (anywhere from 34-56 minutes later, representing the heart and bulk of the fragrance. They fade more slowly as
well and can linger for about six hours. They are commonly extracted from leaves or herbs such as the classic *editerranean plants thyme,
rosemary, mar, oram, etc. 7ines (the genus 7inus fall into this group as well. *any essential oils classified as middle notes address respiratory
and digestive issues.
(ase notes are rich and heavy, and can linger for two or three days. "ase notes are comprised of bigger and heavier molecules which
contribute to their deeper, richer scent. 'ssential oils extracted from wood (cedar and sandalwood or resins (frankincense, myrrh, ben&oin
and opopanax tend to be classified as base notes. They are soothing, good for the skin and especially useful for emotional, mental, energetic
and spiritual purposes.
Rate o) e%aporation: on a scale of 3 to 366, determine how long an odor will last.
