Course Description
The Montevideo Family and Consumer Sciences program provides an overview to the field of
Family and Consumer Sciences, providing a foundation for the management of individual roles
as students learn to be successful in family, work, school, and community environments.
Students explore the concepts of self-development, family roles, budgeting, problem solving,
leadership skills, healthy choices, ethics, personal relationships, careers, self-care, household
management, textiles, nutrition, and childcare. The program reinforces Virginia SOLs and is
integrated with skills in mathematics, science, history, fitness, language, social sciences, fine
arts, and technology.

Competencies
The curriculum is driven by the competencies, which have been outlined by Rockingham County
and by the Virginia Department of Education. Virginia Family and Consumer Science
competencies can be found at the Virginia Department of Education website and on the RCPS
website. The competency list for 6th grade exploratory is number 8206. The seventh grade
semester class is number 8263. Eighth grade semester is number 8244, while the year long eighth
grade class is competency number 8245. Traditional letter or numerical grades do not provide
adequate documentation of student achievement in competency-based education; therefore, the
Virginia Standards for CBE require a recording system to provide information about
competencies achieved to employer, student-employee, and teacher. The ratings are assigned by
the teacher.
