Long tops are better for you. Wear pants in lighter colors than tops. Dont wear
wide belts. Hipster pants will help your body look longer.

Because you are round in the middle, dress to balance your body.

Wear short-sleeved tops and straight skirts. Straight pants are better for you.
A scarf and accessories that balance your wide hips are better on you. Try to

Hi there!
I want you to know that Im really annoyed about an organized
tour I took with your company on September 18th. I booked
the vacation for my family because your company has a very
good reputation. we were really fed up because so many things
went wrong.
So, where do I start? Our flight was delayed by four hours and
we did not receive any refreshments being promised coffee
and sandwiches. And then, when we finally arrived at our
destination, our luggage had been lost. It didnt arrive until
three days later the tour operator said that we would have them
the next day. Last but not least, the fact that your brochure
states that the hotel has won awards for its food, my whole
family were suffering from food poisoning on our last day. We
called the hotel doctor, he never came.
Because of this nightmare, I believe you should refund the
entire cost of the vacation. Im also enclosing the receipts for
the refreshments we had at the airport and the extra clothes we
had to buy when our suitcases did not show up.
Youd better write back to me soon!
Love from,

James

Objective: to play a game to practice transforming sentences
Time: 30 minutes
Skills: readingreading and matching sentences to verbs
Vocabulary: phrasal verbs for personal rituals
Grammar: verb + object + infinitive
Preparation: hand out one verb grid and one set of sentence cards per group

Possible answers
Remind: My dad reminded me to write down the
address before I went.
Beg: Our mom begged us to put away our things.
Advise: I would advise you not to put off what you can
do today until tomorrow.
Invite: You never invite me to join you for lunch.

Ask: My boss keeps on asking to go over the
presentation.
Encourage: Schools should encourage students to
follow their hopes and dreams.
Need: She needs someone to help her clean out the
house.
Expect: He didnt expect to see me.
Tell: Our teacher told us to plan out our essay before
we write it.
Persuade: The zookeeper used a banana to persuade
the monkey to go back into the cage.
Allow: You are not allowed to enter the building
without the correct password.
Want: Do you want me to take you to the station?

Lead-in
Write these sentences separately on the board: Doctors tell people
they should put on sunscreen before going out in hot weather.
My parents make me do my homework before I watch TV. We are
not allowed to use our cell phones in class. force/permit/advise
Ask the class to work quickly in pairs to transform the
sentences using the most appropriate verb. Tell the students to
shout STOP! when they have finished. The first pair to finish
the sentences correctly wins. (Accept any grammatically correct
variations. Some possible answers are: Doctors advise people
to put on sunscreen My parents force me to do Wearent
permitted to use )

A
Put the students into groups of three. Give each group
one grid and one cut-up set of sentence cards, and
have them spread out the sentence cards face up on the
desk. Explain that the object of the game is to connect
three verb squares in a row horizontally, vertically, or
diagonally.
Ask them to take turns choosing a verb square from
the grid and then choosing the sentence card that they
think matches the verb. Then have them transform the
sentence using the verb and the prompt on the card,
e.g., Advise + You shouldnt put off what you can do today
until tomorrow. = I would advise you not to put off
When a student transforms a sentence, the rest of
the team must decide whether or not they think it is
correct. If they agree, the student keeps the card, writes
their initials in the box (this box cannot then be used
by other students), and takes another turn. If not, the
student must return the card and wait until their next
turn. Point out that if they are not sure, the teams can
check sentences with you. (Answers may not be the
same as below, but are acceptable as long as they are
grammatically correct and make sense.)
Have the students continue until the groups have used
up the sentence cards or they have played for thirty
minutes. In each team, the students who have the most
rows of three are the winners.

Spot The Error

Objective: to find the factual errors in statements about famous people
Time: 30 minutes
Skills: speakingdeciding which sentences are true

listeninglistening to and evaluating sentences about celebrities
Vocabulary: ways to become famous
Grammar: reported speech
Preparation: hand out one copy (cut out) per pair

Lead-in
Write the following names on the board: J. K. Rowling, Anita
Roddick, Usain Bolt, Bill Gates, Stephanie Meyer, Bernard
Madoff, Andy Warhol, Jonas Salk, Marilyn Monroe, Richard
Branson. Ask the students to work in pairs and discuss which
of the people they know, why theyre famous, and anything
else they know about them. Encourage them to use the target
vocabulary. Say J. K. Rowling wrote the best-selling Twilight
novels. When the students disagree, ask them what is wrong
with the sentence. Encourage them to use the target grammar,
e.g., You said that J. K. Rowling had written but she wrote
Harry Potter. Elicit brief feedback about each person.
Pre-teach the words vaccine (a special substance that
a person takes into their body to prevent them from
getting a disease and that contains a weakened or
dead form of the disease) and eradicate (to get rid of or
destroy something completely).
Give half of the class a Student A Worksheet and the
other half a Student B Worksheet. Ask each student
to work first with another student who has the same
worksheet.
Tell the students they have eight sentences about
famous people, but four of the sentences are factually
incorrect. They have to decide which ones they think
are false.
Next, put students into A/B pairs. Tell them they have
similar sentences, but only one of them is correct. Doan
example with the whole class. Choose one Student A
to read sentence #1 aloud. Students in group B should
listen carefully and find the corresponding sentence.
Choose a Student B to report Student As sentence
using the target grammar, and then read their own
sentence aloud.
Student A: J. K. Rowling came up with the idea for the
Harry Potter books on a flight to New York.

Student B: You said/told me/claimed that J. K. Rowling

had come up with the idea , but my sentence says that she
came up with it on a train to London.
They then decide which of the two sentences is correct.
Have the students continue this process, taking turns
reading a sentence first. Make sure that they only read
the sentences to each other and do not look at each
others worksheet.
When the students have finished, check the answers
with the whole class. The pair with the most correct
sentences wins.
Answers
Correct sentences are: A: 2, 5, 6, 7 and B: 1, 3, 6, 8.
