McKendree Christmas Baskets

An opportunity to meet the
immediate needs of families in
our own community
It was obvious that more needed to
be done, but as the McKendree staff
was finishing their weekly meeting this
past Tuesday, it was clear that
“something more” needed to be a
way to further pour into the lives of
families in our own community.
This Christmas season, we as a church
are going to be providing McKendree
Christmas Baskets to fifteen families in
need within our midst. Between now
and December 13 we will have
collection bins placed all over the
church campus. We are asking the
McKendree community to donate
non-perishable food items.
The McKendree United Methodist Men - macaroni & cheese

has also donated their time to this
effort and will be putting together a - spaghetti sauce
- bags of dried beans

love of Christ and what He has done for
us to those who not only need to
experience it...but to those who are truly
looking for it and expecting it!
Holiday Festival (children’s outreach)
McKendree Church is sponsoring a
children’s outreach program on
Saturday, December 12 at the Holiday
Mobile Village mobile home park in East
Nashville. Andrew Skipper, one of
McKendree’s many servants, has built
this program from the ground up and has
everything in place for a successful
event for the Kingdom.
The only element currently missing for this
event is YOU! If one of the following falls
within your gifting, strongly consider
volunteering your time to this great
outreach:
- Set-up/Tear-down
- Leading games
- Serving food
- Puppeteers
- Participating in skits

The Chrismon Tree
Traditionally, our church has
displayed a Chrismon Tree in
the Worship Center during the
Advent season. What is a
Chrismon? Chrismon’s are
Christmas tree decorations
that teach the word of God.
Chrismon is a combination of two words:
Christ and monogram. Thus the Chrismon
tree bears specific symbols or
monograms about our Savior and
symbolizes the purity, per fection,
majesty, and glory of the Son of God.
Originated in the 1950’s by the Lutheran
Church, many congregations like
McKendree began displaying trees
adorned with delicate, homemade,
gold and white ornaments. Sadly,
McKendree’s Chrismon collection has
aged poorly. The once beautiful
collection is tattered and torn and ready

This advent season we are delighted to
display an evergreen tree (representing Nov. 30 - Dec. 4

A Young Man Named Brett
Last week a young man came to the front
door of the church. His name was Brett and
he was in tears. His wife had left him a couple
of months ago because he was an alcoholic.
Brett couldn’t handle the rejection so just left
his home in Branson, MO and set out on the
road with very little money. Somehow he
ended up at McKendree. He was at the end
of his rope and wanted to get home and get
into a rehab center. After a lot of phone calls
and conversations with different churches,
government agencies, and clinics in Missouri,
we found a Christian clinic in Branson willing
to accept this man. We were able to get him
home on the Greyhound bus but we were
unsure if he would actually report to this clinic
or not. A few days ago we received a call
from Church Army rehab center in Branson
and they said that Brett had admitted himself.
We sent a small check to cover his
admittance fees. Praise God for using us to
help make a difference in Brett’s life.
“Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his
way will save him from death and cover over
a multitude of sins.” (James 5:20)
McKendree Ministry Classes
With much anticipation, the McKendree
Ministry Classes will be launching on the
first Sunday of January.
Putting a twist on the “new member
classes” of old, the McKendree Ministry
Classes are designed to wrap a history,
orientation for people new to McKendree
or the United Methodist Church, and
general information about Christian living
into classes designed and encouraged
for everyone in the church community to
attend. Yes, this even means some of
you that have attended and been
involved at McKendree for several years!
The McKendree Ministry Classes will be a
4-week series that will be offered every
Sunday at 12:30p in the Archives Room in
the main building at 523 Church St. Food
will be provided for those who wish to
come directly after the 11:00a worship
service.
The four classes scheduled to run in
succession each month are:
Week 1: History of McKendree UMC and
the movement of John Wesley
Week 2: UMC Theology & Beliefs
Week 3: Organization of the UMC &
McKendree Church
Week 4: How to really get involved at
McKendree Church
