God's Wife of Amun

The God's Wife of Amun was the highest ranking priestess in the cult of
Amun. She was associated with the temple of Amun in Karnak. When
Queen Ahmose Nefertari was given the position of God's Wife land and
propert! was endowed for this priestl! position.
The "ivine adoratri# was a priestess ranking slightl! $elow the God's Wife
and she ma! have served as a deput! or stand in for the God's Wife. The
position of God's Wife of Amun was reserved for ro!al women. The
position was usuall! given to the mother of the king %in the earlier part of
the new kingdom& or to the daughter of a king.
The position of divine adoratri# could $e held $! non'ro!al women as well.

2t's not certain that she also served as God's Wife. There is an interesting
vase at the -ouvre $elonging to a great ro!al wife ;er!tamen. The -ouvre
we$site identifies the lad! as the daughter'wife of )amesses 22. A$ove the
great ro!al wife title are some gl!phs that see to identif! the lad! as a god's
wife or ma!$e sister of a god's wifeC 2t's possi$le this vase $elongs to a
Queen ;er!tamun from the *+th d!nast! instead.

have decorated the front of the wig $ut was $roken off. (er hands are held
out in front of her and it looks as though the! would have grasped

and Amenirdis $ecame God6s Wife $ut it ma! have $een during the reign of
Sha$a5a. At that time Amenirdis had adopted her niece Shepenwepet 22
daughter of 7i!e as her successor. Amenirdis died during the reign of
