Help at hand for young people
searching for their irst job
WITH GCSE and A-level results
out this month, young people in
Stroud are being encouraged to
think about how their irst ex-
periences in the world of work
could lead to even the unlikeli-
est of career paths with help
at hand through the local Job-
centre Plus.
Some of the UKs most well-
known celebrities had unlikely
starts to their careers as revealed
by the Department for Work and
Pensions (DWP) #firstjobs cam-
paign Davina McCall worked as a
sales assistant, Lenny Henry was
a welder and Myleene Klass sur-
veyed rivers.
Now the Government is encour-
aging young people to make the
most of the summer by gaining
skills in the world of work which
could help them secure their first
job, including through Govern-
ment schemes such as work ex-
perience, apprenticeships and
sector-specific training.
Wednesday, August 20, 2014 56
stroudnewsandjournal.co.uk
Youth unemployment is now
127,000 lower than it was in 2010,
and across the country last sum-
mer, around 100,000 more people
started a new job compared to
earlier on in the year including
young people for the first time af-
ter leaving education.
Karen Hulme from Stroud Job-
centre Plus said: Entering the
world of work can be daunting
for some people, which is why we
want to make sure young people in
Stroud have the skills and experi-
ence they need to get off benefits
and into a job.
Young people often tell us they
cant get a job without work ex-
perience and they cant get work
experience without a job. That is
why we introduced our work ex-
perience scheme to give people a
taste of the world of work which
could open the door to other jobs
and careers.
Theres plenty of help and ad-
vice on things like work experi-
ence and skills training avail-
able through Jobcentre Plus. The
Government has also massively
expanded work experience, chang-
ing the rules so that young people
(aged 18-24) on Jobseekers Allow-
ance can now do up to two months
work experience without it affect-
ing their benefits.
The Government also increased
apprenticeships and through sec-
tor-based work academies young
people can get sector-specific
training in areas like hospitality,
along with work experience place-
ments and a guaranteed job inter-
view.
Karens top five tips for young
jobseekers in Stroud:
1. Give your CV a makeover
Keep it short a maximum of two
sides of A4 is enough. Try to tailor
it to the job.
2. Go online create a profile on
Universal Jobmatch to get jobs au-
tomatically matched to your CV,
register for job alerts and update
online profiles.
3. Networking works link up
with employers you like on Twit-
ter and LinkedIn
4. Be prepared practice answers
to tricky interview questions.
5. Try work experience youll
get to see what a job is like and
show an employer what youre
made of.
Minister for Employment, Es-
ther McVey said: Our young peo-
ple are some of the best and most
talented in the world. They are in-
novative, entrepreneurial, enthu-
siastic and we know that despite
the worst recession in living mem-
ory todays young people are in
jobs, training or study in numbers
unparalleled compared with re-
cessions that have gone before.
Weve just seen the biggest an-
nual fall in the number of unem-
ployed young people since the
1980s and as our #firstjobs cam-
paign shows, your first job can
give you invaluable skills.

Friends are in good company as
they share a love of photography
GOOD friends, Jessie Ford
and Emilie Sandy have recent-
ly set up a wedding photogra-
phy business in Stroud.
The pair met as children,
in the village of Selsley and
then worked together for
many years in Moonflower, in
Stroud.
Ms Sandy studied at St Mar-
tins, University of the Arts,
pursuing her photography
and subsequently setting up
her own portraiture photog-
raphy business, and Ms Ford
carved out a career as a suc-
cessful illustrator and stylist,
with work featured in Vogue,
Elle, and Marie Claire.
Our shared love of photog-
raphy and the rolling hills of
Stroud, has brought us back
together once more and we
founded Paper & Primrose
Wedding Photography this
spring, said Ms Ford.
Our fine art photography
looks to capture the creative
side of weddings, focusing on
the joy and the beauty of the
day.

Play shares
archives of
female war
musicians
A NEW play shares true sto-
ries of the girls who took
music to the battlefields of
the First World War.
War, Women and Song,
based on freshly-found
memories, gets its premiere
in Bristol at the end of the
month.
Around 600 entertainers,
most of them young wom-
en, joined Lena Ashwells
controversial YMCA con-
cert parties between 1914
and 1919 to perform for Our
Boys in freezing tents, huts
packed with wounded, on
ships at sea and at the bed-
sides of the dying.
They included Stroud cel-
list Daisy Godfrey, one of the
first women to study music
at university.
Daisy Godfrey was born
into a wealthy Stroud family.
Despite a genteel upbring-
ing, she was one of the first
to volunteer to join the Lena
Ashwell YMCA concert par-
ties. Before long she became
the manager of one troupe
fixing up their often complex
travel and accommodation
arrangements right through
until 1919.
At first, she refused to play
Germanmusic and was quite
put out when asked to play at
a POW camp. But then she
saw the pale homesick Ger-
man boys and was moved to
tears by their response to the
well-known German lullaby
she chose to perform.
The show has been created
by theatre-makers Anna Far-
thing and Bea Roberts, us-
ing dramatised versions of
real-life stories drawn from
archive records, newly-dis-
covered diaries, letters and
personal testimonies and the
best-loved music of the First
World War era.
Performances will take
place at the Redgrave Thea-
tre, Bristol, August 31 until
September 2, at 8pm.
