This house on Frazho was one of many in the city that had an entire basement worth of trash at the curb. The damage
as a result of backups was extensive and has many residents reeling and cleaning up the debris.
The waters have long
since washed away, leav-
ing no visible trace of the
historic amount of rain
that fell on the city in just
a few hours Aug. 11.
The effects of the del-
uge, however, are evident
all over the city.
My boyfriend and I
have virtually had to
throw out half of our be-
longings, Cornetta
Pickens said. We had a
beautiful finished base-
ment one minute and the
next minute there was
like two feet of sewer wa-
ter in it. I just sat there on
the steps and cried.
Pickens story is
echoed throughout town
and officials want to
make sure residents
know they have the op-
tion of filing a claim with
the city as well as what
steps to take in the after-
math of what some are
calling a disaster.
It is a complete disas-
ter, Tom Benito said. Its
not just the furniture and
the carpet, its the boxes
of photographs and other
sentimental things that
were just soaked. Thats
the hardest part.
Benito spent the better
part of three days in the
basement of the
Jefferson Avenue house
he grew up on a house
that his mother still lives
in.
Its not anybodys
fault, Benito said, point-
ing to several piles of
trash up and down the
street. I know the city
was doing what they
could, but its just such a
shame to see this kind of
destruction.

It just might be the big-
gest party in the city.
On Wed. Aug. 27, this
party gets underway.
The Harper Charity
Cruise attracts tens-of-
thousands of car buffs,
motor-heads and plain old
fans of classic cars, bikes
and other transportation
devices, and this years
event, the 20th annual,
promises to deliver the
cruise and more to these
enthusiasts and specta-
tors.
Me and my 68
Mustang are going to be
there, Gerald DuPreen,
68, said. Ive done this
event for a long while. Its
one of my favorites.
There are lots of rea-
sons, DePreen said, as to
why the Harper Charity
Cruise ranks among the
top in his book each year,
but none more prominent
than the intimacy of the
event.
Every year I have peo-
ple come up to me and ask
me about the car, he said.
I can be on the road or
pulled in a parking lot,
doesnt matter. I love to
talk to people about my
car. This cruise caters to
that interaction. I love
that.
Shorewood Kiwanis,
the events presenter,
Cruise Chairman Tom
Ulrich agrees.
I think that is one thing
that really sets this cruise
apart, Ulrich said. The
way the whole thing is set
up, it encourages that ex-
change between people.
You just dont see that at
many other, or any other,
cruises for that matter.
The Harper Charity
Cruise is also the areas
only totally charity driven
cruise meaning the
money raised goes direct-
ly to a handful of very
worthy organizations
ranging from Wigs 4 Kids,
to CARE, to Tree of Hope
Foundation and more.
Its all about benefiting
these charities, Ulrich
said. Thats why we do
this.
Theres no cost to at-
tending the cruise, Ulrich
said, folks just have to find
a spot somewhere along
the cruise route, which
runs from Old 8 Mile to
Bayside along Harper
Avenue.
The cruise officially
starts at 5 p.m., Ulrich
said. But honestly, youre
going to have to be there
before that to get a spot.

The wheels of the 2015 St. Clair Shores
Aqua Freeze festival are already in motion.
Among the upgrades and improvements or-
ganizers are making is the inclusion of thou-
sands of holiday lights to be strung through-
out Blossom Heath Park.
Its something we talked about and heard
about from last year, Aqua Freeze Committee
chairwoman Geri Hofmann said. The feed-
back we got was that the park was too dark at
night last year. We wanted to change that, so
this is what weve come up with.
What they came up with was a concept to
light up the park with holiday lights, thus illu-
minating the ice sculptures and turning the
park into a twinkling sea of glimmering lights.
Its going to look so beautiful, Hofmann
said. Now, we just need to get the lights.
Theres a plan for that, too.
Beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, or-
ganizers are hosting a holiday lights donation
party at Blossom Heath Park.
Were going to be grilling hot dogs, and
well have potato salad. Its going to be a little
party, she said. Thats where people can
come and donate light that will be hung and
used in the park.
Despite the fact the festival isnt until late
February, the event is taking place in
September for very good reason, she said.
Its not cold out in Sepetmber, Hofmann
said. We just felt it would be better to have it
when it wasnt freezing cold out. And that way
we could make a little celebration around it.
The lights can be any size, shape or color,

she said, but must be in

People can bring
them in a bag, a box,
whatever, Hofmann
said. They just need to
work. Thats all.
Volunteers will be
hanging the lights in the
park in September.
This gives us time to
make sure everything is
wor ki ng r i ght ,
Hofmann said. These
lights wont be turned
on much between

February, but theyll be
ready to go when the
Aqua Freeze begins.
Those interested in
volunteering at the
Aqua Freeze Festival
2015, Hofmann said to
show up at the Sept. 11
event about a half hour
early.
Mike Smith, said people
to go to the citys web-
site (scsmi.net) and fill
out the proper forms to
file a claim with the city
or call (586) 447-3322.
We had no malfunc-
tions with the pumps or
anything like that,
Smith said. And we did
everything we could to
keep the water flowing.
It was just too much wa-
ter in that short span.
Along with filing a
claim with the city, there
are several steps that
residents need to take in
order to move the recov-
ery and clean-up pro-
cess along.
Most importantly, they
need to contact their
homeowners insurance
agent, take pictures of
the damage if possible,
and finally, remove the
damaged items from the
house and set them out
at the curb regardless
of when your scheduled
trash pickup day is.
Rizzo Services is pick-
ing up debris as fast as
possible. No violations
will be issued for debris
and trash that is curb-
side at this time.
You just have to pick
yourself up and begin
again, Pickens said.

Dents and dings
to Dodge
A resident in the 27000
block of Glendale noticed
damage to his 2013 Dodge
Journey Wednesday, Aug.
13, and immediately called
police. Officers responded
to the call and when they
arrived, the resident ex-
plained that sometime be-
tween 11 p.m, Tuesday,
Aug. 12, and 11 a.m. Aug.
13, his car was vandalized
in front of his house. Three
dents and scratches were
noted by officers and a tail
light was also broken on
the vehicle.
Lawn-ng gone
Several pieces of lawn
care equipment was stolen
from a trailer located on
the 22000 block of Harper

cording to the report.
Childs bike stolen
A family on the 21000
block of Alger returned
from their vacation
Saturday, Aug. 2 to find
their garage had been bro-
ken into while they were
gone. The homeowner told
police that a childrens bike
was missing. He added the
garage door was pad-
locked, but he wasnt sure
the padlock was locked
when they left on vacation.
Energy drink theft
The CVS at 31240
Harper was the scene of
retail fraud, according to
reports. A white male in
his 20s wearing a white
shirt with blue stripes and
dark shorts allegedly stole
four packs of Red Bull
brand energy drink for the
store at about 2:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Aug. 13. The
suspect stole the merchan-
dise then fled the scene in
a blue Chevy, which was
driven by a white female.
Speakers and
checkbook taken
A house on the 21000
block of Englehardt was
broken into and two
speakers and a check
book were reportedly sto-
len from the property. The
house, which has been va-
cant since a fire Friday,

The Department of
Natural Resources in part-
nership with organizations
including the Michigan
Audubon Society, volun-
teers from Osprey Watch
and the U.S. Department
of Agriculture Wildlife
Services, are monitoring
and tracking the revitaliza-
tion of osprey chicks in
southern Michigan.
Nearly absent from much
of the state due to the effects
pesticides and habitat loss,
ospreys continue to re-
bound throughout the state.
This year, six osprey
chicks from area nests
were outfitted with back-
pack satellite and GSM te-
lemetry units. These units
will help scientists track
the young birds daily
movements and seasonal
migration patterns.
Approximately 60 per-
cent of the osprey chicks
hatched each year do not
make it to their second
birthday. Factors that com-
monly cause mortality in
these young birds include
predation by great horned
owls, collisions with build-
ings and other structures,
weather and illegal shoot-
ing of birds in Central and
South America.
The birds migration be-
gins in early to mid-Sep-
tember and can be moni-
tored at michiganosprey.

The Lake House pro-
vides free cancer support
services to those touched
by the disease.
The local organization
has become a rock for
many and provides a
wide array of services,
programs, activities and
support to families from
all over the area.
These programs, how-
ever, require funds to
come to fruition.
At 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept.
28, at Blossom Heath
Park, the Lake House is
hosting the Waves of
Hope 5K walk.
This event is designed
to raise funds and aware-
ness, and it gives partici-
pants the opportunity to
have a good time and
support a worthy cause
The Lake House Board of
Directors Vice President
Rosemary Tokatlian said.
Its a good chance for
people to really enjoy
themselves, she said.
Its also a great opportu-
nity to fundraise and get
the word out about The
Lake House.
The event is the second
of its kind, Tokatlian said,
with last years event at-
tracting somewhere be-
tween 100 and 200 walk-
ers.
We dont really have a
number we want to shoot
for, she said. But we
want as many people as
we can get, as many peo-
ple who want to come out
and help support The
Lake House.
The walk is a bit unique
in the sense that its com-
prised of several laps
around Blossom Heath
Park, laps that are any-
thing but required to
complete.
You dont have to fin-
ish all the laps, Tokatlian
said. If you want to just
walk one lap, one half
lap, or all of them, either
way its OK. We just want
to get people out there to
participate. Thats what
this is about.
Mikes on the Water is
hosting a kick-off party
for the event beginning at
6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15,
Tokatlian said.
The cost of the kick-
off party is a $20 dona-
tion, she explained. Its
going to be a great night,
and we cant thank
Mikes on the Water
enough.
The party features
complimentary peel-and-
eat shrimp, special drink
prices, and the chance to
register for the Waves of
Hope 5K Walk.

Its like a collectors
dream.
Those were the words
uttered by Colleen Belz as
she walked along the li-
brary parking lot Saturday
morning, browsing one of
the nearly two dozen ven-
dors that set up shop for
the day as part of the
Historical Societys White
Elephant Sale.
These vendors offered
patrons a wide variety of
goods from antiques and
collectibles to clothing and
even used library books
a selection that pleased
most patrons.
I love this, Constance
Franklin said. I came here
from Macomb Township
hoping there would be
some good things. There
are some very good
things.
Vendor David Connors
was happy with the turn-
out and the cause.
I love this concept, he
said. Everybody wins
here, and it all helps out a
good cause.
The sale may have satis-
fied vendors and custom-
ers, but the purpose of the
event was to raise much-
needed funds for the
Historical Society, society
vice president, Ann
Powell, said.
Weve had a great turn-
out today, Powell said.
Weve got 22 vendors
who rented 32 spaces,
which is better than last
year. Each year we believe
it will improve and im-
prove.
Last year's event was a
rousing success, attract-
ing hundreds customers
from all over the city and
surrounding community.
Members of the society
were hopeful this year
would be just as encour-
aging.
"We had a survey that
we distributed last year,"
Powell said. "We asked for
feedback from the ven-
dors and tried to use that
feedback to make this
year's event better. We
think we did that."
A similar survey went
out this year, she said,
with the feedback to be
applied to the 2015 event.
All in an effort to raise
as much money as possi-
ble.
These funds aid the ef-
forts of historical society,
efforts such as the upkeep
of the Selinsky Green
Farmhouse Museum
among other a plethora
of other things, Powell
said.

Know Your Skin

Small, pearly or pink dome
shaped lesions may indicate a
viral infection known as mol-
luscum contagiosum. Similar
to warts, molluscum belongs
to the poxvirus family. It does
not afect any internal organs.
More common in children
and young adults, molluscum
is a contagious condition that
is easily spread from person
to person by direct skin con-
tact. Tey appear most fre-
quently on the face, chest and
arms. Patients with compro-
mised immune systems are at
risk for molluscum infections
that can become quite exten-
sive and disfguring.
For most, molluscum will
eventually go away on its own
without leaving a scar. How-
ever, because this can ofen
take six months or longer and
because the condition is con-
tagious, treatment is usually
recommended.
With adults, cryotherapy
is the most common treat-
ment. Blistering agents (such
as cantharidin) may be used
for children. Some patients
may also be given a topical
retinoid, immune modi-
fer, or other topical antiviral
medications to use between
treatments.Superfcial surgi-
cal removal may be required
for other cases.
To learn more about mol-
luscum, contact your der-
matologist or call us at

SPORTS
With the start of the
school year just around
the corner, the sounds of
football practice have be-
gun to fill the air at each
of the three local high
schools.
Football brings out the
passion in fans more than
any other sport.
Over the next couple of
weeks, were going to
take a look at each of the
three local squads and
give fans a brief rundown
of just what they can ex-
pect top see from their fa-
vorite gridiron team.
At Lake Shore High
School, coaches are opti-
mistic about the upcom-
ing season for many rea-
sons, but none more
prominent than the re-
turn of a several key play-
ers on the offense from
last years squad.
Weve got more re-
turning starters coming
back on offense than we
do on defense,, Lake
Shore High School varsi-
ty football coach Tom
Iwanicki said. It starts in
our backfield with Sean
Smith, coming back for
his senior year, and our
quarterback Will Bobek.
Smith is a versatile
back with the ability to
catch the ball, while
Bobek is a tall, 6-foot 5
inch, signal caller with a
strong arm and a high
football IQ, Iwanicki said.
The return of offensive
lineman Aaron Schultz,
Ray Chandler and Cody
McAdory are also going
to play key roles in the
teams success this sea-
son offensively.
Instincts and IQ are go-
ing to be extremely im-
portant to Lake Shore this
season since the squad is
going to be playing a very
frantic no-huddle style of
offense.
We just want to be no-
huddle and go as fast as
we can go, the coach ex-
plained. Were not going
to be as big as some of the
other teams in our divi-
sion, we know this. So
were going to try and
dazzle them a little bit

Members of Lake Shores football team gather and listen to head coach Tom Iwanicki after practice.
and really keep the pace
of the game very fast. Its
a fun offense and its
served us well the last few
seasons.
On the other side of the
ball, the Shorians are
young, inexperienced
and rebuilding after los-
ing most of the unit to
graduation.
We are kind of in that
rebuilding mode on the
defensive side, he said.
But what weve seen so
far looks very promising.
The linebacking and
secondary corps are key
for the defense this year
with the line being the
strength of the defense
out of the gate.
Were working hard,
Iwanicki said. Thats
what I want to see from
these guys. We keep do-
ing that and were going
to be fine.
The Shorians call the
Ma c o mb Ar e a
Conference Silver home
this season, after a stint in
the Gold the last couple of
seasons, meaning they
are slated to battle with
the likes of Clintondale,
East Detroit, Fitzgerald,
South Lake and, division
favorite, Madison.
Id say the division
probably begins and ends
with Madision, the coach
admitted. Theyre re-
turning most of their
guys, but were going to
be competitive within the
division. Were going to
be very exciting, and the
division is a very good
one.
If Lake Shores defense
can come along quickly,
and their special teams is
solid, this squad might
sneak up on teams such
as Madison and rival
South Lake.
Were going to give it
everything we have,
Iwanicki said. That
much I can say for sure.

The fifth annual
Boating & Outdoor
Festival at Lake St. Clair
Metropark, coming
Sept. 11-14, is an in-wa-
ter boat show with boats
up to 60 ft. in length on
display and for sale.
Boats featured at the
event include fishing
boats, sail boats, cruis-
ers, pontoon boats, per-
sonal watercraft, ski and
wakeboard boats, ca-
noes, kayaks, and pad-
dleboards.
Hundreds of boats will
be in water and on land
making this event a
great place to shop for
an end-of-season deal
from quality brokers
and dealers. It is also a
great place to learn
more about the different
types of boating enjoyed
by more than four mil-
lion people each year in
Michigan.
Adding to the appeal
of this boat show are the
attractions. The Boating
& Outdoor Festival is a
boat show plus so much
more.
A picturesque board-
walk lined with beauti-
ful boats along the Black
River is the perfect
backdrop for a day on
the water. New this
year, select dealers will
be displaying their boats
to customers.
Live island music en-
tertains patrons in the
Tiki Bar and a multitude
of activities fill the day
including the Bark Park,
featuring entertainment
by the Rock N Roll K9s;
The Bat Boat and Bat
Man; a Nauti cal
Photobooth; and the
Kids Entertainment
Zone with waterwalk-
erz, face painting and
bounce houses.
A Taste Fest, food
court, Beer Tent and
Tiki Bar are also on site
all four days of the show.
Were also hosting our
very spirited 2nd annual
Cruising Outpost Party
on Saturday night.
Exhibit space is sell-
ing fast as Michigans
rebounding economy
and great summer
weather has fueled a
great season for the
boat i ng i ndust ry.
Michigan has seen 4
years of consecutive
growth in new boats,
motors, trailers and ac-
cessories and has out-
paced the rest of the
country for two years in
a row.
The boardwalk is on
its way to being sold out
and there will be more
boats in the water with
an increased demand
for floating docks.

Whether youre a specta-
tor or you have a car you
want to park somewhere
along the route. You have
to get there early, for
sure.
Many folks stake out
spots beginning on
Tuesday, Ulrich said.
We go out there to
scout out spots to set up
the T-shirt stands, he
said. And on Tuesday
when we do this we see
sections roped off. Plus,
many of the car owners
have already talked to
business owners about
parking their car in front
of their place or in the
parking lot.
The sale of T-shirts is an
important revenue source
for the organization dur-
ing the event, and this
year, in honor of the 20th
anni versary, t he
Shorewood Kiwanis are
offering two colors of
shirts, black and white.
Were offering two
shirts this year for 20
years of cruises, Ulrich
said with a chuckle. So I
guess that means were
going to have to have
three shirts for the 30th
annual one.
Theres little doubt that
plenty of black and white
cruise shirts will be pur-
chased by many of the es-
timated 70,000-80,000
spectators who are ex-
pected to line Harper
Avenue, many of whom
live in the neighborhoods
along the route.
This community aspect
is a vital and important
part of the cruise.
People come from all
over, event down the
street. And thats wonder-
ful. We want that sense of
community. We want that
for the businesses, too.
Thats why we dont give
permits to any vendors
from the outside, Ulrich
said. There are business-
es all along the route that
offer all kinds of food and
things for people. Theres
no need for us to contract
out any of that. Harper
Avenue has a lot to offer.
The cruise does as well,
Ulrich added.
Weve got a lot of
things going on, he said.
The kids lot at Bagnasco
is much bigger this year
than it has been. Weve got
more inflatables and other
stuff for the kids to do.
Then there are a lot of offi-
cial parties, including a
new one at Buffalo Wild
Wings. And, then, of
course, theres all the cars.
Its really going to be a
great time.
The cars are front-and-
center at the event and
hundreds will be on dis-
play over the course of the
event, DuPreens included.
Im already looking
forward to it, DuPreen
said. Its going to be great
weather and a really great
time.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 21, 2014 ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION 3B
The 1930 Ford Model A LeBaron Phaeton from the automotive collection at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford
House in Grosse Pointe Shores was the only Grosse Pointer at the famous Pebble Beach Concours
dElegance at Pebble Beach, Calif., held Aug. 17. According to the concours program, this car was the
personal car of Edsel Ford who, with his father Henry, asked Connecticut-based LeBaron body works
to create a one-off Model A with a dual cowl phaeton body a style Ford never offered in the regu-
lar Model A lineup. Its custom features include laid-back windshields and elongated front fenders.
The body is aluminum over wood. The phaeton served as a styling study for a possible production car.
