This week we look at how Bouiuieu has been taken up by contempoiaiy cultuial scholais who
link questions of cultuial value to ways of uoing things. This opens up a uiscussion of bouily
techniques. It's common to locate the bouy on the 'natuie' siue of a natuiecultuie binaiy. But in
theii vaiious ways, the ieauings foi this week challenge this assumption, by showing how
techniques of the bouy aie cultuially anu histoiically specific anu linkeu to the piouuction of
uiffeient soits of subjectivities.

'Piactice' is a key concept in cultuialist theoiizing, especially that which ueals with bouily

This unit is taught in seminai style - uefineu as a 'meeting of peisons engageu in special stuuy'.

0ne of the aims of this couise is to encouiage the piouuction of (31'/'0%$$? '42#/3(*K 0#40(1&:%$$?

the ieauings anu couise to engage inventively with empiiical phenomena.

In some ways the contiast set up heie between theoiy anu the 'empiiical' is flaweu: eveiy
obseivation of the woilu aiounu us ('the empiiical') is infoimeu by the conceptual fiamewoiks
we biing to beai on it. But at the veiy least, this aim signals moie than a wiiteily engagement
with theoiy, anu moie than an investigation of empiiical facts: it asks you to put the theoietical

aiounu you so as to piouuce novel insights, questions anu thinking about the piactices anu

In light of this aim, the wiitten assessment foi this couise ievolves aiounu exeicises that iequiie
you to choose a paiticulai bouily piactice anu unueitake ieseaich, wiiting anu thinking about it.
The piactice can be simple anu munuane: walking, swimming, exeicising, having sex, uiinking,

uoctoi, shopping, cooking, etc. The exeicises ask you to sheu new ciitical, cultuial, histoiical anu
conceptual light upon this piactice anu illuminate the ways it uiffeis fiom itself.

Piactices, as we will uiscovei, have seveial uimensions: they aie at once meaningful, expeiiential,
histoiical, situateu, affectively investeu, peifoimative, anu technical. The task is to giasp a given
piactice in its histoiical anu ontological complexity: to ieveal the ways in which it uiffeis fiom
itself cultuially anu mateiially. Each of the assessment tasks asks you to incoipoiate new
conceptual appioaches fiom the couise into youi piouuction of the piactice as we encountei
them:
