Warren water

tower behind
schedule
Warren - Warren
City Council members
accepted postponing the
completion of the new
water tower at its meet-
ing Monday, Aug. 11.
Water tower special-
ist Maguire Iron,
responsible for erecting
a new 200,000-gallon
storage tank for Warren,
requested an extension
of the completion date.
It is willing to offer the
city some compensation
for the new completion
date of Oct. 15, which is
behind schedule. The
council agreed to the
request.
The firm cites the
harsh 2014 winter and
spring conditions as
being the reason it is
several months behind
schedule with all of its
projects.
To compensate the
city for moving the Aug.
15 completion date to
Oct. 15, it plans to:
1. Extend the 10-
year coating warranty.
Any failures due to
workmanship or materi-
als will be replaced at no
charge to the owner
(added value $20,000).
2. Extend the 10-
year structural warran-
ty. Any failures due to
workmanship or materi-
als will be replaced at no
charge to the owner
(added value $5,000).
3. Provide two clean
outs (2016 and 2018) on
the new tank (added
value $2,500 each). -

Council member files complaint
by April Scheinoha
Reporter
A Thief River Falls City
Council member has filed a
complaint against another
council member, claiming
that he has repeatedly vio-
lated the citys Respectful
Workplace Policy.
Council Member Rachel
Prudhomme filed the com-
plaint Wednesday, July 30
against Council Member
Don Sollom. She claimed
that he has consistently dis-
respected her at council
meetings.
The Northern Watch filed
an open records request for
the complaint. Prudhomme
filed the complaint with City
Administrator Larry Kruse
and Human Resources
Specialist LeAnn Engelstad.
In her email to the two of
them, Prudhomme wrote, I
am tired of being repeatedly
disrespected for raising jus-
tified concerns and for being
publicly bullied at any meet-
ing in which I disagree with
Don. I should not have to tol-
erate a double standard of
how Don treats me in com-
parison to the other council
members. If you review past
recordings of the meetings,
you will clearly notice that it
is evident in the meeting in
which Don announced I was
disrespectful for using my
cell phone for data retrieval
that Alderman [Edwin Dale]
Hahn was not given the
same scolding in the meet-
ing or the prior meeting for
utilizing his phone for tex-
ting purposes.
In an interview with the
Northern Watch, Sollom
said, Im at a loss of words
as to why shed do something
so juvenile. He indicated
that he hasnt said anything
threatening to Prudhomme.
Sollom added that he has
shown the email exchange to
numerous people, who didnt
see anything threatening
about Solloms statements.
Sollom later said he
raised an issue with
Prudhomme using her cell
phone during a council meet-
ing. He said, Its a clear pol-
icy, and she doesnt know
how to follow it. Sollom
added that the council is
given its agenda days before
the meeting and council
members have the opportu-
nity to be educated on those
issues prior to the meeting.
After receiving the com-
plaint, Kruse was unclear if
council members could file
complaints against one
another under the policy. He
then contacted Attorney
Brandon Fitzsimmons, who
periodically represents the
city on labor and employ-
ment issues. Fitzsimmons
indicated the policy doesnt
apply to council members.
As a result, Kruse took no
action. However, he suggest-
ed that council members dis-
cuss respectful treatment of
each other during their next
Committee of the Whole
meeting. A Committee of the
Whole meeting was sched-
uled for Tuesday, Aug. 19. It
Digi-Key employee Lindsey Nelson (foreground) was among those participating in the
Digi-Key Cares cookout Thursday, Aug. 21 at Super One Foods in Thief River Falls. The
cookout was a fundraiser for four local charities.
A Caring Community
Warroad to
keep its
school logo
by April Scheinoha
Reporter
On Monday, Aug. 18, the
National Coalition of Racism
in Sports and Media rescind-
ed its letter threatening
legal action against the
Warroad School District.
The coalition wanted the dis-
trict to stop using the
Warriors logo.
While rescinding its let-
ter, the coalition also apolo-
gized to the elders and com-
munity.
The decision came after
the coalition met with Henry
Boucha, an
Ojibwe/Annishinabeg leader
and elder. Boucha provided
the history of the logo to the
coalition. The regions
American Indian community
endorsed the nickname, and
the logo was created years
ago by an American Indian
from the Warroad communi-
ty.
Superintendent Craig
Oftedahl said he was proud
of the community support.
He noted Boucha and the
community were able to con-
vince the coalition that the
school district is doing some-
thing positive and its logo
isnt meant to degrade
American Indians or do any-
thing harmful.
The coalition sent the let-
ter to the district Thursday,
Aug. 14. The coalition said
the district was in violation
of the U.S. Civil Rights Act
of 1964. The coalition indi-
cated that the logo discrim-
inates against students,
staff and the public on the
basis of race, religion,
national origin and color.
In the letter, the coalition
gave the district a one-
month deadline to begin pro-
cedures to change the logo in
a way that does no harm to
children. If the district did-
nt comply, the coalition
planned to file a lawsuit.
Oftedahl said the district
had no contact with the
coalition prior to the letters
arrival.
Shortly after the letter
arrived, a Facebook page
titled Save the Warroad
Logo was created. The page
has garnered 2,511 likes as
of Wednesday morning.
Sara Evans to perform
at Seven Clans on Sept. 5
by Scott DCamp
Reporter
Chart-topping country
singer Sara Evans will be
performing at Seven Clans
Casino on Friday, Sept. 5.
Since her debut album
was released in 1997, Evans
has charted seven singles
that reached number one on
the U.S. Country charts and
recorded multiple albums
that have been certified plat-
inum. She has performed in
front of thousands of fans
packing a large stadium, but
in a couple of weeks, she will
be performing in a much
smaller and cozier venue.
I really do love playing
all sizes of venues, from sta-
diums down to intimate the-
aters, Evans said. There's
something special about
playing a small room where
you can really connect to the
audience. Playing arenas
and stadiums is an adrena-
line rush though for sure.
Evans start in country
music dates back to her
childhood.
When I started singing
in Missouri at age 5, we gen-
erally always sang classic
country songs and covers,
Evans said. Thats where I
grew to love amazing
Country Music and artists
like Dolly Parton, Loretta
Lynn, Patsy Cline, etc.
When I got older in junior
high and high school, I start-
ed listening to more pop and
rock. I loved Whitney
Houston, The Go Go's, The
Doobie Brothers, etcetera. I
think having a basis of coun-
try, with some rock and pop
mixed in is how I'd describe
my music today.
Evans professional music
career began more than 20
years ago, when she began
singing at a night club at the
age of 16. She moved to
Nashville at age 20 to pur-
sue a country music career;
moved to Oregon with Craig
Schelske (to whom she was
married from 1993-2007)
and returned to Nashville in
1995 to begin recording
demos. She was eventually
signed to a contract with
RCA Nashville and released
her first album, Three
Chords and the Truth, in
1997.
Evans second album, No
Place That Far, 1998, was
certified gold; Born to Fly,
2000, was certified double
platinum; Restless, 2003,
and A Real Fine Place,
2005, were certified plat-
inum. Evans released a
greatest hits album in 2007,
which was certified gold; her
sixth studio album,
Stronger, was released in
2011 and her seventh studio
album, Slow me Down,
was released in March. Like
many artists, Evans style
has evolved over the course
of seven albums.
When I released my first
album I was really country,

Two people were killed
Tuesday afternoon after
their car collided head-on
with a semi in rural Roseau
County.
The Minnesota State
Patrol hasnt released the
names of the two people who
died at the scene. It indicat-
ed that information will be
released after the investiga-
tion has been completed.
The semi driver reported no
injuries.
At the time of the acci-
dent, the person driving the
car was traveling westbound
on Highway 11 near Roseau
County Road 13. The car
attempted to pass other
westbound traffic and then
collided head-on with an
eastbound semi, which was
towing a loaded flatbed
trailer. Both vehicles contin-
ued traveling east together
for a few hundred yards. The
report indicated that the
vehicles came to rest in the
south ditch of Highway 11.
The semi driver then exited
the semi. The car came to
rest underneath the front
half of the semi. The vehi-
cles then started on fire with
both fully engulfed in
flames.

Just hit delete
Scams seem to be a growing problem
just about everywhere. A new one was
brought to our attention just last week.
This one, purportedly from Norway,
claiming that the recipient had won a
prize and need only send a small
amount of money to win the prize. A
quick search on the Internet revealed
another scam stating that the recipient
of a postcard had won an eight-day
Norwegian cruise.
Someone must have heard that there
were a lot of Norwegians in this neck of
the woods and has taken the time to
fine-tune their scam.
The Minnesota Attorney Generals
Office offers the following advice, Most
sweepstakes scams have a few things
in common. They claim that the recipi-
ent has won, or is about to win, a large
cash prize. And they try to get the
recipient to pay money, often supposed-
ly to claim the bogus prize.
The Minnesota Attorney Generals
Office urges residents to:
Not play along. The perpetrators of
sweepstakes scams are fly-by-night
operators who conceal their identity to
avoid detection.
Once your money is received, they
ask you to pay a report fee or purchase
a product online. Of course, they also
ask for personal information.
Not be misled. You dont have to pay
a fee to enter a legitimate sweepstakes,
and buying something wont help you
win. It is illegal for a sweepstakes com-
pany to give those who buy something
a better chance of winning.
Not be fooled by official-looking mail-
ings. Some sweepstakes scams use
names and seals that resemble those of
legitimate organizations.
Read the entire solicitation carefully,
including the fine print. Some solicitors
buy important information, including
that the recipient has not won any-
thing or that the solicitor does not
sponsor a sweepstakes at all, at the
bottom of the page or on the back of the
mailing.
Not be rushed into sending money.
Sweepstakes scams attempt to create a
sense of urgency by suggesting that
there is a limited time to respond or an
immediate response is required.
Be skeptical. If in doubt, show the
solicitation to a trusted family member
or neighbor.
Above all, dont send money, or share
any personal information. If it came to
you through the Internet, just hit the
delete button.

DEWAYNE
KOSTRZEWSKI
FOR MARSHALL COUNTY
SHERIFF
I would like to take this opportunity to endorse
DeWayne Kostrzewski for Marshall County Sheriff.
I have known DeWayne Kostrzewski throughout both
of our careers in law enforcement, and in fact lived
with DeWayne while we attended the police academy
together. Since then, I have had the opportunity to
work with De Wayne Kostrzewski on several cases
and he has always conducted himself in a profes-
sional and mature manner. DeWayne Kostrzewski has always shown the willingness to
work with area law enforcement agencies through cooperation and sharing of resources.
DeWayne Kostrzewski knows the importance of having a strong working relationship with
area law enforcement.
As Chief of Police of Warren, MN, DeWayne Kostrzewski was highly respected by his
employees and peers. DeWayne Kostrzewski has always been passionate about law
enforcement and providing fair and equal service to the citizens. As Chief of Police,
DeWayne Kostrzewski successfully proved his ability to be an administrator.
I have always known DeWayne Kostrzewski to be a person of integrity both on and off duty.
I believe that DeWayne Kostrzewski exhibits the characteristics that define the true mean-
ing of Sheriff.
As Sheriff of Marshall County, I believe DeWayne Kostrzewski will be available to the citi-
zens and address their concerns with professional and courteous service. I believe that
DeWayne Kostrzewski will take a common sense approach to policing and ensure that
the level of service provided is of the highest quality.
I believe that DeWayne Kostrzewski is the best candidate for Marshall County Sheriff. I am
confident that DeWayne Kostrzewski will provide a safe place to live for not only my fami-
ly, but to all citizens of Marshall County.
Thank you,
Ben Kuznia

Lance Scott, 33, was taken
to Sanford Medical Center in
Bemidji, where he was treat-
ed for minor scrapes and
abrasions. He has charges
pending for first degree
assault, felony fleeing from a
peace officer and driving
while impaired, according to
the Beltrami County
Sheriff s Office. No one else
was injured in the incident.
The incident began after
a Minnesota state trooper
allegedly spotted Scotts
pickup truck traveling east-
bound at 84 mph west of
Wilton on Highway 2. When
the trooper attempted to
stop the vehicle, Scott
increased his speed and
began fleeing east toward
Wilton. Scott turned his
vehicle north on Highway 89
and continued driving at
speeds over 90 mph. The
trooper reported Scott was
swerving at oncoming vehi-
cles, causing citizens to
dodge his vehicle in order to
avoid colliding with Scott.
Beltrami County deputies
and Bemidji police officers
maneuvered into position to
assist the trooper, according
to the sheriff s office. Scott
continued driving at a high
rate of speed and in a reck-
less manner northbound on
Highway 89 toward Red
Lake. The trooper was able
to confirm that Scotts vehi-
cle contained only the driver
and no other occupants were
in the truck. As Scott drove
onto the Red Lake
Reservation, tribal police
officers deployed stop-sticks
and took over the chase from
the State Patrol trooper and
Beltrami County deputies.
Scott continued to
Highway 1, where he turned
eastbound and drove into
the western edge of the town
of Red Lake. At that point,
Scotts left front tire deflat-
ed, but he continued to drive
on the rim. He lost control of
the vehicle and drove into
the north ditch of Highway 1
near the Tribal Police
Department. As tribal offi-
cers and deputies pulled
their vehicles around Scotts
truck, Scott accelerated his
truck and drove right at a
Beltrami County deputy
who had just stepped from
his patrol car.
The deputy fired two gun-
shots at Scotts vehicle as he
moved to get out of the path
of the vehicle. Another
deputy then used his squad
car to crash into Scotts
truck and stop him. Scott
allegedly got out of his vehi-
cle and grabbed a logging
chain when he was subdued
by officers. Scott was then
taken into custody.

Death, though an expected phase of life,
is not easy to accept or easy to observe,
and it is hard to say Goodbye...
The family of Frank Burda gratefully acknowledges all of the kind expressions of
compassion, sympathy, support and words of encouragement in the loss of a very special
member of our family.
We have been overwhelmed with all of the prayers, visits, hugs, phone calls, memories
shared, food, flowers, plants, beautiful cards, kind words and memorials given in memory
of Frank.
We wish to thank all of the Doctors and Healthcare Staff at the TRF Sanford Clinic and
Hospital, and to Dr. VandeWege and the Nursing Home Staff at LifeCare Roseau Manor for
the personal care given to Frank and his family.
Thank you to Fr. John Kleinwachter for the memorable service celebrated with Frank,
and his family, the day before he passed away. It was so touching and a great comfort to
us.
Thank you to Fr. Luis Buitron and Fr. John for leading the meaningful and comforting
Family Service, for the reader, the Rosary leader, and for the special music provided by Joe
& Joy Gust, Cathy Erickson and Steven, Joe & Robert Hlucny, and to all who shared special
memories. Thanks to the ladies that brought food and served lunch after the prayer serv-
ice and to the members of Czech Lodge #219 for bringing additional goodies.
Thank you to Fr. John for presiding over the Funeral Mass celebrating Franks life, and
to the Altar Servers, Readers, Gift Bearers, Eucharistic ministers, and to the musicians; Gail
Steinhauer for sharing the touching a cappella songs, and to Joe & Joy Gust and Cathy
Erickson for sharing your music and songs. Frank enjoyed old time accordion music.
Thanks for playing his favorites, even at the cemetery after the burial service.
Thank you to the Blessed Sacrament Ladies for bringing food and serving the delicious
meal after the funeral.
Thank you to Fr. Lu and Michelle Kern for taking care of preparing the church and print-
ing up prayer service and funeral program inserts.
Thank you to Ernie and Linda, of Gieseke Funeral Chapel, for providing our family with
your professional services. We appreciated your guidance, advice, patience, and flexibility
in planning through this difficult time.
May God Bless All of You, just as we have been Blessed by all of Your Kindness.

Council rep files complaint/Continued
(Continued from Page 1)
was cancelled that day.
The complaint was made
after email correspondence
between Prudhomme and
Sollom. The two of them dis-
cussed City Attorney Paul
Ihles involvement in the
sale of the Noper property.
The council has authorized
an option to purchase 68
acres of the Noper property
to facilitate housing develop-
ment. Prudhomme raised
concerns regarding Ihles
representation of the Nopers
and the city. She referred to
Ihles representation of the
Noper family in the han-
dling of Randall Nopers
estate.
In an interview with the
Northern Watch, Ihle said
he represented the Noper
family in the past and hasnt
represented the family in
any ongoing matters recent-
ly. He said he disclosed the
prior relationship to Kruse
when Kruse asked him to
work on an option to pur-
chase the property. Kruse
was fine with Ihle assisting
with the option. Ihle added
that he didnt negotiate
directly with the Noper fam-
ily rather it was Kruse and
realtor Maryel Anderson,
who was representing the
Noper family in this transac-
tion.
After receiving the email
from Prudhomme, Sollom
advocated meeting with Ihle
before making any allega-
tions in public. He told her
that the city negotiated with
the Nopers on a price that
the city thought was fair.
Sollom noted that Ihle didnt
vote. He asked Prudhomme
whether she saw any crimes
being committed. I think
that everyone is satisfied on
the outcome of the price. But
we can have you handle this
transaction being you are so
up-to-date on the rules of
order and law, Sollom
wrote. He suggested calling
Mayor Jim Dagg to schedule
a special meeting.
Prudhomme earlier told
Sollom that her concerns
werent allegations as Ihle
was listed as the attorney of
record in the above Noper
estate and no record was
made of his withdrawal. I
feel like you continue to mis-
understand this situation
and are making it into a per-
sonal matter instead of
reviewing my responses,
she wrote.
In response to an earlier
request from Sollom to
obtain the names of those
people who raised concerns
with Ihles actions,
Prudhomme added that its
her duty to address the pub-
lics concerns and shield
them from inappropriate
bullying.
Sollom responded,
Rachel, get some sleep and
pick your battles.
The email was carbon-
copied to the council, Ihle
and Kruse.
Evans performs at Seven Clans/Continued
(Continued from Page 1)
she said. The critics loved it
but Country Radio wouldn't
play it because the sound
had shifted to more pop
country. With my second
album I started incorporat-
ing more of those pop pro-
duction values into the
music and ended up having
my first number one with a
song called No Place That
Far, which I wrote and
Vince Gill sang on. I feel like
I really found my sound with
my Born To Fly album
though. Everything just
clicked with that one.
Evans most recent
release is a duet with Isaac
Slade from The Fray called
Cant Stop Loving You.
The song was pitched to
me as a duet and I loved it
from the first time I heard
it, Evans said. I knew I
wanted a very distinct type
of voice singing it with me
and Isaac was at the top of
my list. We reached out and
he was so gracious to come
in and sing on it with me. I
couldn't be happier with how
it turned out and how amaz-
ing his part is. His voice and
style is truly incredible.
Evans is in the midst of a
tour that is crisscrossing the
country. Despite her busy
schedule, Evans maintains a
family-first attitude.
I generally only tour on
the weekends throughout
the school year so I don't
have to miss any of my kids
important school or sports
events, said Evans, who has
three children Avery, 14,
Olivia, 11, and and Audrey,
9. I typically will do a
Friday, Saturday and
Sunday show. Then it's back
home to get the kids up for
school on Monday morning.
During the Summer it's eas-
ier to stay out for longer
periods since the kids are
out of school.
Evans band also has a
family feel. Most of the band
members have played with
Evans for more than 10
years, and her bass player is
her brother Matt, who has
been on stage with her since
she first started singing.
While she is on the road,
Evans stays pretty ground-
ed. She travels with her sis-
ter-in-law, Kaelin and one-
and-a-half-year-old niece
Milly. Unlike many big name
performers, Evans doesnt
really have any crazy diva
demands.
I love to have a glass of
Leese-Fitch cabernet after a
show, Evans said. It's
become my favorite wine
and it's so affordable. I'm
pretty low key when it comes
to my diva demands.
New report
Minnesota among states making progress
on passing policies to prevent cancer
Minnesota is among a
select few states making
progress in passing policies
that combat cancer, accord-
ing to a new report by the
American Cancer Society
Cancer Action Network.
How Do You Measure up?: A
Progress Report on State
Legislative Activity to
Reduce Cancer Incidence
and Mortality evaluates
each states activity on
issues crucial to winning the
fight against cancer. The
report by ACS CAN, the
advocacy affiliate of the
American Cancer Society,
finds that Minnesota meas-
ured up to benchmarks in
six of the 12 measured
areas.
Its great to see
Minnesota making progress
in the fight against cancer,
said Matt Schafer,
Minnesota government rela-
tions director for ACS CAN.
Our states improved rank-
ing is the result of years of
hard work put in by volun-
teers across the state talking
to their lawmakers and
making their voices heard,
said Schafer. He points to
recent gains made with the
states $2.83 per pack ciga-
rette tax, its acceptance of
federal funds for Medicaid
and legislation passed this
year to restrict tanning
device use to those 18 and
older.
There isnt a single leg-
islative answer to fight can-
cer. Its these combined poli-
cies working together that
makes a difference, Schafer
said.
But while Minnesota has
made progress in some areas
- mostly tobacco and health
care policy - its lagging
behind when it comes to oth-
ers like preventing obesity-
related cancer. Nearly one-
third of all cancer deaths in
the country are linked to
poor nutrition, overweight
and obesity. With more chil-
dren being overweight or
obese, ACS CAN is working
to pass proven policies that
will help combat the obesity
problem. Specifically, ACS
CAN recommends states
require 30 minutes a day of
physical education for ele-
mentary students and 45
minutes daily for middle and
high school students.
Kids are in school at
least eight hours a day mak-
ing schools a natural place
to address the alarming
problem of childhood obesity
and provide all children with
skills that will carry through
beyond the classroom and
keep them active for life,
said Schafer. By helping
kids form healthy habits we
can reduce the number of
cancer diagnoses and deaths
in Minnesota and ultimately
reduce what the state pays
in obesity-related health
care costs.
Currently, Minnesota
requires schools include
physical education in their
curriculum, but does not set
any minimum time or fre-
quency standards. Using the
reports color-coded rating
system; Minnesota gets a
red rating for its lack of
physical education stan-
dards.
How Do You Measure
Up? grades states on 12 pol-
icy issues using the color-
coded system to classify how
well a state is doing in each
issue. Green shows that a
state has adopted evidence-
based policies and best prac-
tices; yellow indicates mod-
erate movement toward the
benchmark and red shows
where states are falling
short.
How Minnesota Measures
Up:
Smoke-Free Law -
green
Tobacco Tax Increase -
green
Tobacco Tax Rates -
green
Tobacco Prevention
Funding - yellow
Medicaid Coverage of
Tobacco Cessation - green
Indoor Tanning Device
Restrictions for Minors -

Physical Education
Time Requirements - red
Breast and Cervical
Cancer Early Detection
Funding - red
Effective Pain Policy -
yellow
Access to Palliative
Care - yellow
Increased Access to
Medicaid - green
Restrictions on Tobacco
Rating - red
Nationally, the report
finds that only one state,
Massachusetts, is measur-
ing up, meaning they are
meeting the benchmark in
nine or more legislative pri-
ority areas measured. Forty
states land in the falling
behind category, meeting
benchmarks in just four or
fewer of the measured
issues. Just 10 states fall in
the middle category meeting
benchmarks in five to nine
issue areas.
In 2014, it is estimated
that more than 1.6 million
people in the United States
will be diagnosed with can-
cer and more than 580,000
people will die from the dis-
ease. In Minnesota this year,
an estimated 29,340 people
will be diagnosed with can-
cer and 9,750 will die of the
disease.

nonpartisan advocacy affili-
ate of the American Cancer
Society, supports evidence-
based policy and legislative

nate cancer as a major
health problem. ACS CAN

make cancer a top national
priority. ACS CAN gives
ordinary people extraordi-
nary power to fight cancer
with the training and tools
they need to make their voic-

Getting to be the end of
summer and start of school,
means more cooking, what
with hungry kids and lots of
garden produce. These
recipes will keep you going
for a while:
Weve all heard of
Blueberry Buckle, but I, for
one, have never made it. I
found a recipe though and
now I can try it. I love blue-
berries:
BLUEBERRY BUCKLE
1/4 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/4 cups
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 1/2 cups fresh or frozen
blueberries
Topping:
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup cold butter
In mixing bowl, cream
butter and sugar. Add eggs
and vanilla and mix well.
Combine 2 cups flour, bak-
ing powder and salt and add
to creamed mixture alter-
nately with buttermilk. Mix
well. Toss berries in remain-
ing flour and fold into batter
(discard any flour that does-
nt stick to berries).
Spread batter in greased
9 inch square baking pan.
For topping, combine flour,
sugars and cinnamon. Cut
in butter until the mixture
resembles coarse crumbs.
Sprinkle over batter. Bake
at 375 degrees for 25 to 30
minutes or until toothpick
inserted near center comes
out clean. Cool on wire rack.

Oh, my, that was good.

How about another blueber-
ry recipe? This one is for a
great cake that will serve a
bunch, like when you have a
picnic. How about a little ice
cream on that?
VERY BLUEBERRY CAKE
1/2 cup butter or margarine,
softened
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
4 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon almond extract
3 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
Filling:
1 tablespoon flour
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 teaspoon quick cooking
tapioca
4 cups fresh or frozen blue-
berries (divided)
1 teaspoon grated lemon
peel
Glaze:
1 cup confectioners sugar
1 to 2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon lemon juice
In mixing bowl, cream
butter, shortening and
sugar. Beat in eggs, one at a
time. Add extracts.
Combine flour and baking
powder and add to creamed
mixture and mix well.
Spread 2/3 of the batter in a
greased 15x10x1 inch bak-
ing pan.
For filling, combine flour,
cornstarch and tapioca in
large bowl. Add 1/2 cup of
blueberries, mash with a
fork and stir well. Add
lemon peel and remaining
berries and toss to coat.
Pour evenly over batter in
pan. Drop remaining batter
by rounded tablespoonfuls
over filling. Bake at 350
degrees for 40 minutes or
until golden brown.
Combine glaze ingredients
and drizzle over warm cake.
Serves 20.

I love to make homemade

pancakes. It seems so silly
to buy them frozen when
they can be made so easily,
but it is hard when I only
eat a few. That batter does-
nt retain its texture in the
fridge very long and I hate
to make a whole batch.
Heres a recipe just for one
person. Double it if you are a
big guy and want more.
PANCAKES FOR ONE
1/2 cup flour
2 teaspoons wheat germ
1/4 teaspoon soda
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 1/2 teaspoons vegetable oil
Butter and maple syrup
In bowl, combine flour,
wheat germ, baking soda,
baking powder and salt.
In another bowl, beat egg.
Add buttermilk and oil and
stir into dry ingredients just
barely until blended (dont
take the whisk after it
either just do it by hand).
Pour batter by 1/3 cupfuls
onto lightly greased hot
griddle. Turn when bubbles
form on top. Cook until sec-
ond side is golden brown.
Serve with butter and syrup
and wipe your chin it is
the same temperature as
your chin and you wont
notice the dribbles running
down.

OK, we need a hearty

casserole for supper and
dont have time to fuss. I bet
youve forgotten how easy
this old favorite is and its
economical too. It will
remind you of when you
were a kid:
TUNA MUSHROOM
CASSEROLE
1 (12 ounce) package wide
noodles cooked and
drained
2 cans (6 ounces each) tuna,
drained
1 can (4 ounces) mushroom
stems and pieces, drained
1 can (10 3/4 ounces) con-
densed cream of mushroom
soup, undiluted
1 1/3 cups milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 cup crushed saltine
crackers
3 tablespoons butter or mar-
garine, melted
Paprika, thyme and tomato
slices for topping as desired.
In large bowl, combine
cooked noodles, tuna and
mushrooms. Combine soup,
milk, salt and pepper, mix or
whisk and pour over noodle
mixture. Mix well.
Pour into greased 2 1/2
quart baking dish.
Combine crackers and
butter and sprinkle over
noodles. Bake, uncovered, at
350 degrees for 35-45 min-
utes or until heated
through. If desired, sprinkle
with paprika and garnish
with tomatoes and thyme.

Ive been so hungry for

brownies lately that I think
I could eat these all by
myself. Well, maybe not. But
the recipe will make a bunch
of goodies for a picnic, out-
door barbecue with friends
or bake sale before school
starts. This recipe will make
you 5 dozen brownies that
should be enough for a
while::
FROSTED BROWNIES
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons
butter, softened
4 cups sugar
8 eggs
2 cups flour
1 1/4 cups cocoa
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups chopped nuts
Frosting:
1/4 cup butter, softened
2 1/2 cups confectioners
sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1/4 cup milk
2 teaspoons vanilla
In large bowl, cream but-
ter and sugar. Add eggs, one
at a time, beating well after
each.
Combine flour, cocoa and
salt. Add to creamed mix-
ture. Stir in vanilla and
nuts. Spread batter in 2
greased 9x13x2 inch baking
pans. Bake at 325 degrees
for 25-30 minutes. Cool well.
In bowl, cream butter.
Combine sugar and cocoa
and add to butter. Add milk
and vanilla and beat fluffy
and light.

Prowlers prepare for early-season home meet...
Cross country debut
Most high school teams
split their schedules pretty
evenly with home and away
dates. Not cross country. The
boys and girls who partici-
pate in the sport of long-dis-
tance running have just one
opportunity to compete on
home turf each fall as pro-
grams take turns hosting
meets. Locally, that race
occurs in the first week of
the season with the
Prowlers staging their annu-
al Thief River Falls
Invitational Thursday, Aug.
28.
Held at the Thief River
Golf Club, the event will fea-
ture races for varsity, junior
varsity and middle school
boys and girls. It starts at
4:15 p.m.
Eleven other meets that
make up the Prowlers regu-
lar season schedule will take
them to Moorhead, Roseau,
Bemidji, Warroad, Bagley,
East Grand Forks, Perham,
Duluth, Alexandria, Pelican
Rapids and Park Rapids.
The opener will be Monday,
Aug. 25, at Moorheads M.B.
Johnson Park, where compe-
tition starts at 10 a.m.
Terri Efteland, who took
over as Thief River Falls
head coach in 2008, wel-
comed 49 runners (29 boys,
20 girls) in grades 6-12 for
the start of practice.
Lots of new faces this
year, noted Efteland. We
lost nine seniors last year,
which took a lot of our expe-
rience. Thankfully they were
good leaders, and now the
underclassmen like Nolan
Johnson who was my only
sixth grader the first year I
began coaching are now
the team leaders.
On the boys side,
Johnson and Allan
Samuelson are the only sen-
iors in the program. The
girls have Hallie Frazer,
Marquelle Dahl and Alex
Skime as upperclassmen.
Team spirit and a family-
type atmosphere are two
aspects that help make the
sport special to Efteland, a
former high school runner
for the Prowlers and at
Jamestown College. She
coordinates with assistant
coach Kallie Barthold to uti-
lize a variety of practice-day
activities in an effort to keep
drills upbeat.
After the first week,
Kallie and I can see the fun
personalities we will get to
work with this year, said
Efteland. They look forward
to the ice baths and what
workout is coming each day.
This year, we have named
many of the workouts two
specifically have been
named Terri and Kallie.
After they complete them,
they decide which they find
to be their favorite, or the
most challenging.
Joining the five seniors on
the Prowlers high school
roster are juniors Alexis
Lane, Ethan Johnson,
Carter Ueland, Gabe
Peterson, Chris Klopp,
Kelsey Kainz, Matt Pearce,
Kaylee Eskeli, Kaitlin
Bennett; sophomores Tayton
Zutz, Collin Smith, Brandon
Kasprick, Blake Boen,
Christian Dahl, Payton
Graham, Zach Lee, Gabriel
Holte, Gavin Bugge, Sam
Mosbeck, Cooper Sorvig,
Will Smith; and freshmen
Emily Ueland, Jared Smith,
Anna Robson, Kathryn
Kruta, Morgan Espe, Aaron
Halsa, Tyler Sele, John
Aldag, Jo Koppenhaver and
Erin Retka.
Middle school runners in
the program include eighth
graders Abigail Semanko,
Kailee Vigen, Zach Myhrer,
Cody Sele, Charles Van
Schaick; seventh graders
Jerzie Finstad, Rosie
McDougall, Tia Petrescue,
Jake Davis, Tucker Skime,
Noah Rupprecht, Micah
Duboer, Bryar Lane, Fritz
Koppenhaver; along with
sixth graders Alex
Samuelson, Elaina Ballard
and Raquel Pearcy.
The schedule leads to the
Section 8AA meet Thursday,
Oct. 23, at Detroit Lakes.
Efteland and the
Prowlers are looking for-
ward to their early-season
home meet. We invite the
public to come out to the golf
course and cheer on the
team, she offered.

n Prowlers open 2014 season at
Detroit Lakes Invitational
A young roster greeted
third-year Thief River Falls
girls high school swimming
coach Tevia Reese when
practice opened for the 2014
fall season.
There were 27 names on
the list, but just three of
them are seniors and nearly
half are middle school age
swimmers.
The seniors are Erin
Sedra, Michaela Myhrer and
Bailee Nordheim.
Other high schoolers on
hand many of them proven
varsity swimmers include
juniors Alex King and Claire
Naslund; sophomores Rylie
Steiger, Bailee Kolden,
Kayla Possai, Morgan
Zerwas, Sydney Hodgson,
Wynn Klamm; and freshmen
Addison Erickson, Ashley
Carlson, Jenna Von Holtum,
Marley Nelson and Paige
Ballard.
They are joined in the
pool by eighth graders Alexa
Rogalla, Caitlin Johnson,
Jestina Leclaire, Macy
Twamley, Reagan Espe; and
seventh graders Alison
Stennes, Camryn Schwab,
Carina Huot, Josie
Cervantes, Madelynn
Dakken and Molly Halsa.
Thief River Falls starts
the season with an appear-
ance at the Monday, Aug. 25,
Detroit Lakes Invitational.
In a change from an orig-
inal schedule printed earli-
er, a Thursday, Aug. 28 tri-
angular at Crookston has
been switched to Thief River
Falls. Fosston/Bagley will
join the Prowlers and
Pirates in the 5:30 p.m. meet
at the Franklin Middle
School pool.
That schedule change
was made because work
being done on the Crookston
pool is not expected to be
completed until late-
September. In fact, the
Pirates are traveling to Ada
to use the pool there for
practice sessions.

Q: How old do muskies
get, and how long does it
take to grow a 50 incher?
A: The oldest muskel-
lunge I have aged was 22
years, and muskellunge in
Canadian waters have been
aged up to 30 years old.
In both cases, ages were
assessed using the clei-
thrum, a calcified structure
that requires lethal sam-
pling and is collected from
harvested fish anglers bring
into taxidermy shops.
Growth and ultimate size
can vary among bodies of
water, depending on factors
such as lake productivity,
forage and genetics.
Depending on the body of
water, muskellunge in
Minnesota could take 13 to
21 years to reach 50 inches.

Two-trip Tuesday
I started Tuesday morn-
ing like every morning; a
scoop of Metamucil in water,
stir vigorously, then swal-
low. This morning was like
few however in that it was
Two-trip Tuesday.
I was up at about 2:30 in
the morning. I had planned
a trip to Princeton, to pick
up a small fertilizer spread-
er for my Brutus. A Brutus
is a UTV - very similar to a
Polaris Ranger. I had packed
a few small meals and
snacks for the trip and pro-
grammed the coffeemaker,
so I would have acrid-black-
liquid-to-go at my immedi-
ate disposal.
I am always suspicious of
other drivers who share the
road with me in the early
morning hours. I drive
through many small towns
and no one is awake, not
even convenience stores. I
always wonder why that one
car is skulking about in the
dark. I dont skulk, but I am
on the road in the early
hours, so perhaps they also
find me suspicious.
I purchased the fertilizer
spreader form a young man
who had just come back to
the world after fighting can-
cer for about five years. He
was nice, but we spoke for
only a bit as I had to get on
the road and get home.
I got home about 12 hours
after I started the trip and
prepared for the second half
of Two-trip Tuesday. I also
took a 15-minute nap with
Magoo.
An eclectic group of
tourists met at Oakland
Park for the Pennington Soil
and Water Conservation
District Project Tour. I am a
supervisor for the SWCD
and got an invite for that
reason only and not the fact
the tours organizer and I
share a last name.
We made 13 stops that
night at projects whose pur-
pose is to keep your water
clean. These are all projects
that reduce sediment and
fertilizer in water.
Sometimes we use strips of
grass around the outer edge
of farm fields to grab sedi-
ment or fertilizer run-off as
it attempts to enter water-
ways. In other cases, we pile
sharp rock into the bank of
waterways, so the motion of
the water doesnt erode the
sidewalls. Other times, we
use culverts to control the
tempo and other destructive
habits of ditch water as it
enters streams or rivers.
The project included the
Ralph Engelstad Arena rain
garden. This is an attempt
to reduce erosion, run-off
and some minor urban flood-
ing in a facility that sees a
lot of people. It is a public
place, so there is an excel-
lent chance to see a project
and take the time to see
exactly what several agen-
cies have worked together to
accomplish.
Part of our trip also
included a ride through the
country to see some excel-
lent tree planting projects.
Planting trees reduces ero-
sion, serve as natural snow
fence and just look really
nice. It seems lately that
trees have been replaced
with piles of dead trees. I
guess it looked like progress
when we had $8 corn, but
now they just look like dead
trees. I really enjoyed the
rows of Red Derosier and
Poplars.
Two-trip Tuesday ended
about 18 hours after it start-
ed. It was a good day, but
ended like it began; a scoop
of Metamucil, stir vigorously
and swallow.
