2 Frequency 50Hz +/- 5 %
3 Method of earthing Solidly earthed
7. BASIS OF CALCULATION
A single 100% redundant UPS with 2 x 50% rated batteries are considered all
requirements including LAN, F&G, Telecom etc.
The first step to sizing a UPS system involves a tabulation of the connected loads.
The required spare capacity is then added to this figure. De-rating factors for
temperature and the power factor of the loads are taken in to consideration to arrive
at the final rating.
When the tabulation of actual VA consumption is made, consideration is given to the
nature of these loads.

All workstations, I/O cabinets, etc. will have built-in Switched Mode Power Supply
(SMPS) units and hence shall be considered as non-linear loads. A non-linear load is
characterised by the distortion of the absorbed current. Accordingly, if the voltage
applied is sinusoidal, the current absorbed will not be sinusoidal and shall contain a
number of harmonics of high amplitude
7.1 CREST FACTOR
The crest factor is defined as the ratio of the peak value to the RMS value of the total
non sinusoidal periodic wave form.
Generally the crest factor of a SMPS varies from 2 to 5, the shape of the absorbed
current being largely influenced by the source impedance [Refer to Annexure - 1].
7.2 POWER FACTOR
For a sinusoidal current the power factor is expressed as the cosine of the phase
angle by which the circuit current leads or lags the circuit voltage and we have:
) (
) (
cos
KVA power apparent
KW power active
current total
current active
= =

If the absorbed current is not sinusoidal and contains harmonics the power factor is
not equal to cos
1
where
1
is the phase angle at the fundamental frequency.
Relation between PF and cos
1

As the voltage is maintained sinusoidal (distortion < 5 %) the real power drawn by the
load is function of the voltage and current at the fundamental frequency (50 Hz).
The harmonic currents will increase the total current from I
rms
to I'
rms
but does not
contribute to real power transfer to the load.

0 63

With Fd = 0.63 and assuming cos
1
= 0.96
We obtain:
P'F = 0.96 x 0.63 = 0.60
Generally, an SMPS has a power factor between 0.5 and 0.8, with the highest crest
factor giving the lowest PF, and a typical cos
1
of 0.96 lagging.
7.3 INRUSH CURRENTS
Energising the loads creates inrush currents. These currents have to be considered
when sizing the UPS because unlike the mains, the UPS can not supply very high
currents.
The sum of all simultaneous inrush currents can be limited by powering of the loads
step by step.
8. CALCULATION
UPS Battery sizing calculation shall be done by Vendor. However, Vendor shall
determine the intermediate voltage between the Converter & Inverter and shall size
the battery in accordance with IEEE 1115.
Load list for AC UPS for NOOB substation as attached under Annexure-3.
In accordance with the attached load tabulation as attached under Annexure-2 which
is derived from above Load list, we can calculated the UPS rating as follows:
8.1 DERATING DUE TO THE CREST FACTOR
Modern Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technology for inverters offers instantaneous
adjustment of the output impedance, thus limiting the crest factor for a given RMS
current while keeping the voltage distortion within an admissible value (< 5 %).
No de-rating is necessary (to be confirmed by Vendor) provided that the peak value
of the total current is within the current adjustment limitations.

Generally, the current adjustment limitation is equal to:
Irms( ) nominal x 2 x 1.5 (This value is not applied for our calculation as we
have specified PWM technology for our UPS)

With PWM technology for UPS a Crest factor of 2.5 is considered. The PF for the
above Crest factor is 0.65 (Refer Annexure-1)
8.2 DERATING DUE TO THE POWER FACTOR OF THE LOADS
This de-rating will be based on the Vendors rating chart for linear loads. Considering
the cos
1
of the fundamental wave (0.96 lagging typically), the de-rating is assumed
to be 5 % (to be confirmed by Vendor) [Pn-Obtained from chart as attached under
Annexure-2].
8.3 DERATING DUE TO THE TEMPERATURE FACTOR
UPS size is derated by 1% for every degree rise above 40 C. Average maximum
Shade Temperature is taken as 50 C as per the clause 5.
Hence, the temperature factor is considered as 10% when sizing the UPS.
8.4 SPARE CAPACITY
10% Spare capacity is considered for telecom future load growth
Hence, spare capacity of 10% is considered when sizing the UPS
8.5 DESIGN MARGIN
A Design margin of 10% is considered when sizing the new AC UPS.
8.6 RESULT
8.6.1 240V AC UPS AT NOOB SUBSTATION-1
Total absorbed load = 35.54 kVA [Refer to Annexure -3] at 240V, 0.65 load power

The UPS rating = 35.54kVA x 1.05 x 1.1 x 1.1 x 1.1
= 49.66kVA.
Hence, the minimum size of the new AC UPS should be 50 kVA (Standard rating)
9. CONCLUSION
The new AC UPS shall be rated for minimum 50 kVA for NOOB substation
The EPIC Contractor shall retain the same spare capacity in case the load is
increased, with a minimum rating of 50 kVA.
The UPS has been sized based on the load schedule, which is preliminary /
indicative and is subject to change during Detailed Engineering. The AC UPS load
schedule shall be finalized based on Vendor data, by the EPIC Contractor during
detailed engineering

APPENDIX 4
AC UPS SIZING CALCULATION NOTE (1 PAGE)
S.No Description
1 UPS Output Voltage V : 240 V
2 Total UPS load as per Load list as attached under Annexure -3 : 35.54 kVA
3 Required RMS output current Irms : 148.09 Amps
4 Crest Factor considered : 2.5 (Assumed)
5 Peak current Ip : Crest factor x Current
: ( 2.5 X 148.09 )
: 816.54 Amps
6 Derating factors
a) Temperature factor Tf : 1.1
UPS size is derated by 1% for every degree rise above 40 C.
Operating ambient temperature is taken as 50 C
b) Design Margin DM : 1.1
c) Spare capacity FP : 1.1
d) PF rating as per Annexure - 2 Pfr : 1.05
7 Total output current I : Irms x Tf x DM x FP x Pfr
: (148.09 x 1.1 x 1.1 x 1.1 x 1.05 )
: 206.96 Amps
8 Calculated UPS rating : I x V / 1000
: (240 x 206.96 /1000 )
: 49.6704 kVA
9 Standardised UPS rating : 50 kVA
Note :
1 Load power factor is considered as 0.65
2 No derating is considered due to the Crest factor (= 2.5)
3 Rating factor due to power factor (= 0.65) of the load is 105%
