Conduct an independent investigation, determine the thoughts and feelings

Reading case documents, communicating with the case manager, speaking
with the child and/or persons involved in the childs life

3. What is the primary best interest goal a GAL should focus on for the child?
What does it mean?

It is permanency, which ensures that the child is permanently placed in a
stable family, nurturing and meets all their needs

4. What does it mean to be objective in our advocacy?

Forego judgment; advocate independent of personal feelings; take
measured action without being reactive

Child Abuse and Its Effect on Child Development

1. How do you feel knowing the normal developmental milestones for a child
will help you with your advocacy?

The normal developmental milestones are very important to establish the
child behavior. Base on that information, I may understand what a child in
this age think and really need, from that set up the best advocacy for the
child


2. Choose one of the age groups below and share what you learned about
how maltreatment can affect their emotional development?

Children from the age of 3-5 may be more likely to become victims
themselves, attempt suicide, and scare everyone includes their relatives and
friends. Moreover, they are more likely to be aggressive and antisocial
behavior, depression and anxiety, and fear and withdrawal.


3. Choose one of the age groups below and share what you learned about
how maltreatment can affect their physical development?
Birth-3 3-5 6-11 12-18

Children from the age of 6-11may be more likely to experience difficulties in
school and score lower on assessments of verbal and cognitive skills, lack
conflict resolution skills and hold pro-violent attitudes. They will be familiar with
lonely at home, and do not want to hang out or play with others, include
relatives and friends.

Domestic Violence and Its Impact on Children

1. State 2 reasons why mothers stay with men who batter?

Batterer has threatened to harm her or the children if she leaves or she lacks
the financial resources to support the children on her own


2. What can often happen to children who come from violent homes?

They are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol; attempt suicide; become
victims/batterers themselves


3. As a GAL, what types of recommendations would you make for a child who
has been exposed to domestic violence? Recommendations for the parent
who is not the batterer?

For the children, I would tell them about positive things outside, support them
to hangout and make friends at school, guide them to pray and believe in
the good things in their future life.
For the parent, I would advise them to think about their children first in every
situation, tell them about how domestic violence can affect their childrens
emotional and physical development, from that they know how to support
their children in specific situation.


4. What did you learn from this training about domestic violence that you did
not know before?

Mothers who stay with men who batter typically may stay because she lacks
the financial resources to support the children on her own.

Understanding Substance Abuse and Its Impact on Children

1. Describe how substance abuse by their parent(s) or caregiver can impact
children?

Home is chaotic and unpredictable; communication is unclear; childs
physical and emotional needs often go unmet; the child experiences feelings
of guilt, shame and confusion; the child lives with fear and insecurity

2. What is meant by the Cycle of Addiction?

An individual experiences substance use, then personal substance abuse
and then dependence and addiction

3. As a GAL, what recommendations would you make for a child who has been
living with a parent(s) who has a substance addiction? What
recommendations would you make for the parent(s)?

For the children, I would advise them to think about positive things such as
reading books, listening to the music, or hanging out, try to make them
believe in life and good things
For the parent, I would tell them about how negative a substance addiction
may affect to their child


4. Would your recommendations differ for the child & parent(s) if the parent(s)
were in the first stage of the cycle substance use?

Yes, they would. Because if the parents were in the first stage of the cycle
substance use, it is easier to talk to them

Normalcy

1. In your own words describe what is meant by normalcy when referring to
the children in the dependency system?

It is the right for all out-of-home-care youth the opportunity for normal growth
and development


2. As a GAL how can you support normalcy activities?

I can provide the extra-curricular school activities, such as community
athletics, field trips, arts and music lessons.
