The Jackson County
Central football team has
played in the state tourna-
ment the past two seasons,
but to get back will require
steady improvement as the
season goes along.
The Huskies graduated
a ton of talent, including
nearly everyone on the
offensive and defensive
lines, which has head coach
Tom Schuller stressing pa-
tience as the season opens
tonight (Thursday) against
Fairmont.
We have to have steady
improvement, he said.
JCC football team extremely raw as new season begins
Huskies need to
replace nearly every
offensive lineman
by DAN CONDON
Sports Editor
Were extremely raw right
now.
And replacing an offen-
sive line is something that
doesnt happen overnight,
Schuller said.
It takes a while for of-
fensive lines, he said.
This is going to take a
while.
The lone returning start-
er up front for the Huskies
is junior tackle Michael
Miller, but senior guard
Brandon Schmit also is
back with quite a bit of ex-
perience.
Junior center Justin
Tirevold and senior tackle
Brody Anderson are new
to the starting unit this
year and senior guard Kyle
Kapplinger is new to the of-
fensive line, period.
To go with an inexperi-
enced line is an inexperi-
enced quarterback in se-
nior Joe Brinkman and new
receivers in senior Andrew
Hesse and junior Ryan Sal-
zwedel. Senior Demonte
Thomas is also a first-year
starter at tight end.
What the Huskies have in
their favor on offense are a
couple of Moore brothers to
carry the ball.
Senior Paden Moore ran
for 453 yards and eight
touchdowns a year ago,
while junior Keegan Moore
ran for 1,377 yards and 20
scores.
Our strength is weve
got extremely experienced,
good backs, Schuller said.
We still are required to
The Jackson County Cen-
tral volleyball team returns
two all-state players and
plenty of other talent as it
prepares to make a run at
a conference title and trip
to state.
The Huskies bring back

lee Burmeister, who was
named all-state last year,

and senior libero Kathryn
Nasby, who was an honor-
able-mention all-state per-
former a year ago.
But the Huskies have
seven other players back
from a team that went 22-8
last season.
Burmeister highlights
the group, returning af-
ter hammering 302 kills a
season ago and recording
217 digs.
Well be looking for her
to take charge on the out-
side, head coach Teresa
VanEpps said, adding Bur-
meister is also very good
on defense.
Nasby had a team-high
390 digs a year ago and pro-
vides energy for the team.
Shes that firecracker
in the back row for us,
VanEpps said.
Also back are senior set-
ter Rachel Johnson; senior
middle hitters Sydney Eddy
and Alison Benson; ju-
nior outside hitter Sydney
Nyborg; junior defensive
specialist Abby Brinkman;
sophomore setter Lacey
Wacker and sophomore
middle hitter Abby Benson.
New to the squad this
year are junior setter Mag-
gie Post and junior right-
side hitter Ana Dunlavey.
Johnson had 625 set as-
sists and 135 digs last year
and Wacker had 26 set as-
sists. The two will play set-
ter this season as JCC runs
a 6-2 offense.
Rachel is one of the best
defensive setters that we
have in this area, VanEpps
said. Her defense is stel-
lar. Lacey is taking own-
ership of the other setting
position. You can see shes
worked very hard at taking
that spot.
Abby Benson had 168
kills last year and Eddy had
119. Eddy will move inside
this year after playing as
right-side hitter last year.
She i s comi ng on
strong, VanEpps said.
Shes really taken owner-
ship of that middle blocker
position.
Nyborg recorded 69 kills
and Alison Benson had 42
last season.
VanEpps said Nyborg
speeds up the offense from
the outside and said Alison
Benson can do it all.
She s a j ack of al l
trades, VanEpps said.
Shes that kid that is very
calm and composed on the
court. Shes able to do what-
ever we need her to do.
Brinkman will play in
the back row and has im-
pressed her coach.
Abby has worked hard
for that back row position
and you can really tell,
VanEpps said. Shes fo-
cused back there.
VanEpps added Brink-
man is always picking up
on little things the team
can work on and makes an
emphasis to get it corrected
during practice.
VanEpps said Dunlavey
brings great hustle to the
team and Post is very
passionate about volley-
ball and wants to learn and
continue to get better.
With a plethora of talent
returning to the court,
VanEpps said the goal for
the Huskies is that of most
teams as a new season be-
gins.
Of course, everybody
has the goal of state, she
said. Thats one of those
goals that is attainable for
us. The other goal is to win
the conference.
To do that, JCC will have
to have the best record in
its half of the Big South
Conference and then beat
the top team from the other
half in a match that would
be played in Jackson.
First, JCC has to get by
Marshall and Windom,
which VanEpps said are
always tough because they
have two great coaches.
With the teams hard
work, VanEpps thinks just
about anything is possible.
The girls come to prac-
tice with a great attitude,
she said. They have won-
derful team chemistry. Ev-
erybody wants everybody
to succeed.
One of the things the
Huskies continue to work
on is serve receive, which
VanEpps said has improved
quite a bit already.
We continue to work on
serve receive, she said.
Thats one of our weaker
elements, but weve really
done a nice job on that in
practice. We continue to
work on that every day.
The Huskies opened the
season with a sweep Mon-
day night at Mankato East
and played at Heron Lake-
Okabena Tuesday night.
JCC is back on the court
Sept. 2 at St. James and has
its conference opener Sept.
4 at Redwood Valley.
After four road matches,
the Huskies finally play
at home Sept. 11 against
Luverne and host a tourna-
ment two days later.
JCC plays at Marshall on
Sept. 18 and hosts Windom
Oct. 7. Also included in the
season are typically tough
tournaments at Burnsville
and Lakeville North.
VanEpps is assisted at
the varsity level by Deidre
Wierson and Mindy Rowe.
Wierson also serves as
B-squad coach and Rowe
coaches the C-squad team.
Shelly Condon and Kat-
l yn Ki ehn are mi ddl e

Its a tale of two teams for
the Jackson County Central
cross country program as
the girls bring back an ex-
perienced group of runners
and the boys look to fill the
void left by six seniors.
Thats a reversal of just

a few years ago when the
JCC girls didnt even have
enough runners to field a
complete team.
The Huskies opened the
season last Friday and had
a meet yesterday (Wednes-
day) in Mt. Lake.
Girls return experience
The JCC girls bring back
all but one runner from last
years section meet and
hope to see continued im-
provement.
Im hoping that we can
improve on last years sev-
enth-place section finish,
head coach Rafe York said.
We return everybody but
Sam Swift. Weve got a
tough crew.
Freshman Jessica Christ-
offer was moved up to var-
sity midway through the
season last year and was
JCCs fastest runner the
last two meets. She will
be joined on varsity by
juniors Jadin Bezdicek
and Elyse Johnson; sopho-
mores Annika Lilleberg
and Jayni Anderson; and
freshmen Molly Boyum and
Kia Holm.
Lilleberg was the fastest
Husky in five meets last
season and was named the
teams runner of the year.
Others competing for the
Huskies are juniors Emma-
lie Benson, Kiana Nyborg
and Jersee Pohlman; soph-
omores Hunter Wrightson
and Sophie Johnson; and
eighth-graders Aba Turner,
Elise Rasmussen and Jossi
VanderWoude.
York said there is plenty
of talent on the team, but
somebody needs to step up
and be a leader.
The big questions is
whos going to be our lead-
er? he said. Its important
in workouts we have people
holding people account-
able.
If that happens, he has
high hopes for the team.
Talentwise, theyve all
run varsity for at least half
a season, York said, adding
most have also been on the
varsity track and field team
for a couple years.
Boys looking
for experience
On the opposite end of
the spectrum from the JCC
girls is the JCC boys cross
country team.
The Huskies return just
one runner from lsat years
section meet and feature a
few kids who have never
competed in the sport be-
fore.
One of them is sopho-
more Carter Heinrichs,
who made a good impres-
sion in the teams first
meet by being JCCs fastest
finisher.
York sai d f reshman
Hunter Foote and senior
Alec Fischer both who are
new to the team are locks
for the varsity team.
The new guys are doing
a great job, its just theyre
new to it, York said.
He figures senior Warren
Darling, junior Luke Pyg-
man and sophomore Wyatt
Weier will likely round out
the varsity team. Also com-
peting will be seniors An-
drew Torgerson and Zach
Schwarting.
Darling is the teams lone
returner from last years
section meet. He was JCCs
second finisher once last
year and was fourth for
JCC five times.
Pygman and Schwarting
are new to the sport, while
Weier and Torgerson re-
turn with experience.
York said the goal for the
boys is to just keep getting
better.
Its a much different
group than last year, he
said. The goal for them
is to find as much success
as we can. I want to keep
getting better, start build-
ing. We want to try to end
in a better spot than we
started.
Conference split into two
The Big South Confer-
ence meet will take place
in Windom this year, but
two team champions will be
crowned for both the boys
and girls.
A big-school and small-
school champion will be
crowned in each race. JCC
is in the small school divi-
sion.
The secti on meet i s
scheduled for Oct. 23 in
Madison.
JCCs lone home meet
will take place Sept. 18 at
the Loon Lake Golf Course.

WINTERS
PLUMBING, HEATING and EXCAVATION
The Heron Lake-Oka-
bena football team hasnt
had much success lately.
The Wildcats were winless
last year and the only wins
they have during the last
five seasons are the two
victories in 2012.
New co-head coaches
Jared Bourquin and Cory
Miller hope to change that,
starting with a change in
attitude.
Turning things around
i s a dai l y chal l enge,
Bourquin said. These kids
havent had a winning sea-
son ever. They dont know
what its like to win. We
want to get them to com-
pete every day in practice.
But he and Miller think
good things are ahead,
thanks to a solid group of
returning linemen on both

sides of the ball.
On offense, all five line-
men return, including se-
nior guards Austin Mil-
brath and Jon Hussong.
Also back are junior center
Mathew Poppe and junior
ends Marcelo Esqueda and
Angel Esqueda. Sophomore
Cayden Loeschen also fig-
ures to see time on the line.
Junior Austin Hietbrink
will play quarterback, with
seniors Jordan Hall and
Jake Getzel at running
back. Senior Hunter Timko
will start at wing and se-
niors Isaac Fest and Bran-
den OConnor will also
play there. OConnor will
see time at running back
as well.
Senior Dakotah Schmid
will play quarterback and
running back during the
season.
We think we can run the
ball well, Bourquin said,
The Heron Lake-Okabe-
na volleyball team has six
goals to accomplish this
year and the last two are
pretty lofty.
Head coach Christine
Malm said the first four
goals are all stepping
stones to help achieve the
last two: win another Red
Wildcats aiming for another conference championship
by DAN CONDON
Sports Editor
Rock Conference champi-
onship and make it to the
section finals.
Malm said this year will
be a little different as the
Wildcats are the team ev-
erybody wants to go after
as defending RRC champs.
It wont be handed to
them, she said. Its hard-
er than the year before.
But the Wildcats have
plenty of firepower to re-
peat as long as they can
get the ball to their hitters.
Weve been known as
an offensive team, Malm
said. We have people that
can swing. We just need to
be able to pass the ball.
Because of that, Malm said
nearly every drill in prac-
tice is geared toward get-
ting a good pass to the
setter, who can send it to-
ward a variety of powerful
hitters.
Our serve receive has
improved, Malm said.
Weve been working a
lot on that. It isnt where I
want it, but were starting
out stronger than we did
last year.
Those practices men-
tioned are pretty intense,
which Malm says makes it
fun and gets her team ready
for matches.
We practice four-and-a-
half hours, she said. And
a majority of that it is loud
and intense in here.
This years Wildcat squad
returns its top four hitters
from a year ago, includ-
ing senior Courtney Place.
The second-team all-state
player had 463 kills a year
ago and also led the team
with 99 blocks.
Also playing outside hit-
ter will be senior Kailey
Wendland who had 126
kills and a team-high 239
digs last season and
junior Andrea Hinkeldey,
who did a bit of everything
last year. Hinkeldey had
162 kills, 33 ace serves, 71
blocks, 209 digs and 88 set
assists as a sophomore.
Senior Rachel Mathias
had 120 kills a year ago
and a team-leading 48 ace
serves. She also had 76
blocks.
Back at setter is junior
Hailey Schumacher, who
dished out 710 set assists
a year ago. She also had
111 digs.
The Wildcats also have
senior Katy Henkels and
sophomores Sam Ober-
moller and Sarah Madsen
at outside hitter; junior
Megan Haberman at mid-
dle hitter; senior Sarah
Schmid and junior Ashley
Hendrickson at right-side
hitter; sophomore Brooke
Freking at setter; senior
Marque Loeschen and ju-
nior Haley Ruesch as de-
fensive specialists; and
sophomore Gabi Stenzel
as libero.
Malm said this years
squad will have a good mix
of experienced players, as
well as some youngsters
who will step in.
We have a lot of return-
ers, she said. Well have
nine people in our rotation
and we have five players
who have started before.
But Malm said starting
experience doesnt guar-
antee anything this year
because, while she is going
all out toward another con-
ference title, she also has
to look toward the future
when the six seniors on this
years team are gone.
Im looking in the long
run, she said. Well have
a good mix.
Malm is assisted by Tris-
ta Hacker, who she said
she is very comfortable
working with and having
around to help run practice.
Hacker will also coach the
B squad team.
The Wildcats opened the
season Tuesday by hosting
Jackson County Central.
Their next match is Sept. 4
at home against Fulda.
Malm said the favorite
in the conference is South-
west Minnesota Christian,
but Minneota and Tracy-
Milroy-Balaton are the
teams to beat in the section.
See HLO FB on C4
adding that starts up front
with his linemen. Weve
got size and experience
coming back up front. The
line is all returning.

Esqueda, Poppe, Milbrath,

rett Schumacher will all
see time on the line, with

Bourquin said the big-
gest thing the Wildcats
have been working on
this year is doing the
little things right.
We talked about doing
your job and taking care
of what you need to take
care of, he said.
Bourquin said staying
close in games even
if they end in a loss is
important for the teams
psyche.
We cant get blown
out because thats de-
flating, he said. Were
trying to get them in the
We can compete and
win mindset. Its tough.
The Wildcats open the
season tomorrow (Fri-
day) at Madelia and have
their home opener Sept.
5 against Cleveland.
That game, as well as
all other home games,
will be played in Heron
Lake.

The Heron Lake-Okabe-
na girls cross country team
has its sights set on a Red
Rock Conference cham-
pionship this season after
narrowly missing it last
fall. The HL-O boys, mean-
while, will try to continue
to improve as the season
goes along.
The Wildcat girls were
two points from a confer-
ence title last year and head
coach Les Knutson said the
Wildcat girls have sights on Red Rock Conference title
goal is to win it this year.
Wed like to win the
conference this year, he
said. And wed like to be
in the hunt for state. That
would be our ultimate goal
to make it to state.
Last year, HL-O had two
girls run at state as now
freshmen Rachel Salentiny
and MaKayla Edwards both
qualified. Both are back to
lead the Wildcats, as are
fellow freshmen Brianna
Preston, Cheyenne Schaf-
fer and Vanessa Juaraz.
Freshman Taylor Johan-
ning is new to this years
squad.
We have two real good
ones wi th Rachel and
MaKayla, Knutson said.
Those are going to be up
near the front almost every
meet.
And Preston shouldnt be
far behind.
Shes kind of in the
shadow of the other two,
Knutson said. People dont
realize that shes pretty
good, too.
The HL-O boys will be
led by sophomore Logan
Knutson, who was fifth at
the conference meet last
year.
Also running for the Wild-
cats are sophomores Derek
Rossow and Jacob Rossow;
freshmen Ben Sheldahl
and Tyler Brunk; eighth-
graders Carlos Juarez and
Christian Juarez; seventh-
grader Nathan Sheldahl;
and sixth-grader Paul Sal-
entiny.
Coach Knutson said Ben
Sheldahl will likely be the
teams second-fastest run-
ner this year, with Brunk
and the Rossow twins com-
pleting HL-Os team score
most meets.
Hopefully we ll see
those guys all improve,
he said.
give those guys places to
run. Thats our challenge
right now.
Schuller said the offense
is still trying to find its
way, but it will look pretty
similar to last year when
the team ran the veer and
wishbone.
On defense, the Moore
brothers will play line-
backer, as will Kapplinger.
Thomas and sophomore
Matt Strom will play de-
fensive end, with Schmit
and senior Nathan Horn
clogging the middle as de-
fensive tackles. Hesse and
Salzwedel will play cor-
nerback and senior Scott
Christopher and junior
Avery Henderson will play
safety.
Hesse will handle extra
points and Keegan Moore
will kick off and do the
punting. Return men will
be senior Zach Holm and
Salzwedel.
Because the team is so
inexperienced to start the
season, Schuller said there
is little room for error.
We have to decrease our
turnovers and penalties,
he said. Those are two
major goals. I dont think
we have the comeback
capabilities weve had in
the past so its extremely
important that we control
the football and not get in
long-yardage situations.
The Huskies enter a new
conference this year, but
Schuller said that changes
very little.
We play whos in front of
us, he said. Were trying
to build ourselves up so at
the end of the season were
playing our best. Give me
eight games and well try
to get as many points as we
can and make a run at try
to get on the carpet again.
The Huskies kick off
the new campaign tonight
at home against Fairmont
and are back at Swearingen
Field next week to host Lu-
verne. Road games follow
at St. Peter and Marshall,
which Schuller tagged as
the team to beat in the Big
South Conference.
JCC wraps up the regu-
lar season by hosting St.
James, playing at Windom
and Pipestone and then
hosting Redwood Valley.
Joining Schuller on the
varsity staff are Chris Nau-
mann, Wade Wacker, Jay
Moore, Charlie Clarksean,
Josh Wacker, Nolan Schul-
ler, Blaise Jacobsen, Trent
Sukalski and Nate Hansen.
Sukalski and Nolan Schul-
ler will also coach B squad
and Jacobsen and Hansen
coach the C-squad team.
Junior high coaches are
Greg Maday, Nathan Boler,
David Wrightson and Kevin
Holm.

this season.
