The last 12 weeks I have been teaching a Sunday School class on the EFCA doctrinal statement. Each point of that statement starts with we believe. In fact, the EFCA says that these two words are the heart of the statement of faith, because they drive us to act upon its contents. The last number of months God has been guiding me in my reading, journalling, and prayer time towards three simple, yet profound words; Jesus is Alive. As a believer, these three words should drive us in act and action. The Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:17, if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. For Paul, the resurrection, the physical manifestation of Christ is proof and power for the believer. Without the death and resurrection we would not carry the gift of faith (Ephesians 2:8) and still be hopelessly at the mercy of sin (Romans 6:8-9). The fact that Jesus is alive, means we have life. Our responsibility now is what we do with that life. Over the next weeks and month I will be using this space to talk about what that means for us, because I believe that a life in Christ is one that exemplies a Christ who is alive. In Luke 7:48, Jesus is dining at a Pharisees home and a sinful woman begins to wash His feet. Jesus responds by saying this, Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgivenas her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little. Then Jesus said to her, Your sins are forgiven. Jesus says that her great love for Him has drawn her to Him. For many of us we would say that we gave our lives to Jesus, but let us always keep in front of us the understanding that we did so with the strength, breath, and life that He gave us. We love because he rst loved us. 1 John 4:19 It all starts with Jesus and His divine provision of forgiveness, your sins are forgiven. Therefore one of the greatest markers of a life in Christ, magnifying the life of Christ, is one that can forgive. Now, I want you to hear me in that it is not my intention to be trite in places where you have been deeply hurt. Forgiveness is not easy, and hurt oftentimes really hurts. That is what makes Jesus work on our behalf at the cross so amazing. While we were still sinners, still living in offense to Him, He came and offered forgiveness on a mind blowing scale. In fact, Jesus picture of forgiveness is one that was unattainable for all of us and yet was for us all. So, what does forgiveness look like? There are four elements which must take place: Remorse: The offender is convicted of their wrongdoing and expresses regret. Responsibility and Ownership: The offender takes responsibility for their actions and doesn't "dodge." Repentance: The offender turns away from their wrongs and chooses a new way of acting. Reconciliation or Response: The hurt/offended willingly accepts the apology and allows unity to take place again. The rst three are the responsibility of the offender, but the nal element is the responsibility of the hurt party. When you have been hurt by another person, the person who hurt you can knock on the door to ask for reconciliation, but only you can open the door to let them in. Therefore, reconciliation or response is the responsibility of those who have been hurt. One of the key things we have to ask ourselves is, does my response to being hurt follow the way or Jesus way? In Matthew 18, Jesus tells the offended party to go tell him. The word go is hupago, which means quickly (as fast as you can) and quietly. Forgiveness is to be reacted upon quickly, so that sin may die and love may abound. Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8 Earnest love for one another models the fact that we can let go of sin and learn to love more like Him, because of Him (remember 1 John 4:19). Jesus Himself says that whoever has forgiven little loves little, and then in an act of much love, forgives the womans sins. There was no accusation, intervention, Facebook post, or frustrated rant. Just the grace of Jesus that goes quickly and quietly to the place of sin, and defeats it in love. Taking Pictures? Things are gearing up for the 2014-2015 AWANA season. This year we are planning to have a HUGE push in getting the word out about AWANA, so that tons of kids can meet Christ and grow in Him every Sunday Night. Want to help? Please see Lori Stalter, Ronda Ekberg, Trish Barrett, or Amy Krutsinger. We need volunteers willing to be group leaders from 5:45-7:45pm weekly. At Community Free Church of Mahomet we believe that AWANA is the best program to equip kids to be forever followers of Jesus Christ. So we will continue the program and seek the Lords provision and blessing for it. Because of this we need to bring up a new cadre of leaders to care for the places that Grace has been volunteering in AWANA. So would you be willing to give serving at AWANA a try?
