This document provides instructions for using the IEEETRAN.DOT template in Microsoft Word to format papers being submitted to IEEE Publishing Services. It describes how to create a new paper or convert an existing one using the template. Key aspects covered include using styles to mark up different elements of the paper like the title, headings, lists and references according to IEEE standards. It also discusses using Equation Editor or MathType for mathematical equations and provides a reference of the different styles available in the template.

The current template covers Word versions 6 and 7. The template is essentiall a set of stles that e!tend Word's NORMAL.DOT template. "apers su#mitted to IEEE "u#lishin$ %ervices that adhere to these $uidelines are eli$i#le for a discounted production rate& #ecause the wor' ou do to prepare our document saves us time and effort in convertin$ it for use in our composition software. MATH In addition to usin$ IEEETRAN.DOT& ou must ma'e sure to use either the Microsoft E,uation Editor or the Mat!Ty"e add)on for all math o#9ects in our paper. ( math o#9ect is defined as an e,uation or fra$ment containin$ mathematical sm#ols :includin$ ;ree' characters& super) and su#scripts< that appears either in)line :in the flow of normal te!t< or as a displa e,uation :in its own space #etween lines of te!t<. In particular& ou must avoid usin$ Word fonts or character calls for in)line =,uic'ies> such as sin$le varia#les with super) or su#scripts. "reparin$ our math with the e,uation editor or Mat!Ty"e allows us to automate conversion of most of the math in our paper to our in)house math format& Te#& while allowin$ ou to format math for the hard cop of our paper that ou will su#mit alon$ with our Word file and ascii dump. The Mat!Ty"e add)on for Word is a commercial product that ou ma or ma not have purchased alread for our own use. If ou have MathTpe&we encoura$e ou to use it for as much of our math as possi#le. If not& ou can use the Microsoft E,uation Editor& which comes as a part of Word at no e!tra char$e. MAR=UP Mar'up defines the parts of our paper4 the title& headin$s& lists& and so forth. Each of these elements is $iven an appropriate name& and certain formattin$ instructions are associated with that name& so that title te!t& for instance& alwas loo's a certain wa. In Word& the mechanism for associatin$ an element name with its formattin$ conventions is called a stle. %tle names appear in the pull down stle menu alon$ the left hand side of our Word window. Tpicall& ou hi$hli$ht an area of te!t that ou wished to desi$nate with a certain stle& then select the appropriate name on the stle menu. This does two thin$s. +irst& it associates the stle name with the hi$hli$hted te!t. This connection is hidden within the Word file. %econd& it applies the formattin$ rules associated with the stle to the hi$hli$hted te!t. IEEETRAN.DOT offers an alternative method for applin$ certain stles :the Re-style or Edit macro<& #ut 'eep in mind that hi$hli$htin$& then selectin$ a stle from the stles menu can alwas #e used to re)stle. Re-style or Edit macro does not handle all stle names& 9ust those most commonl used in IEEE 9ournal papers& mostl stle names uni,ue to IEEET.(1.23T. The macro allows ou to add or edit stles without first hi$hli$htin$ an te!t. If the stle alread e!ists& the macro will find the first instance of it and place our cursor there. If no instance of the stle can #e found& the macro will activate the stle at the current cursor position& read for our input. In this case& remem#er that the stle will remain active until ou =turn it off> # selectin$ a different stle or # movin$ our cursor to another point in the document.
