1. Container vessel, M.V. Monte Rosa (LBP = 273m) arrival port stability condition is provided
below. She then discharged all her containers on deck and de-ballasted No. 4 W.B.T. (P&S)
until empty.
What would be her departure condition on completion the above operations assuming all
other conditions remain unchanged?

Solution to Question 1

2. A box-shaped barge of uniform construction is 80 metres long and displaces 800 tonnes
when empty. It is divided by transverse bulkheads into four equal compartments.
Cargo is loaded into each compartment and level stowed as follows:
No. 1 hold
20 tonnes
No. 2 hold
40 tonnes
No. 3 hold
40 tonnes
No. 4 hold
20 tonnes
Construct Load and Shearing Force Diagrams, before calculating the Bending Moments at
the bulkheads and the position of maximum value; hence draw the bending moment diagram.

3. M.V. Starship is about to enter a drydock with draughts 3.5m forward and 4.1m aft. Her KG
is 9.0m. Show by calculation whether the ship has adequate stability to enter the drydock.
(R10, Q4)
New GM = 0.94507m

4. A box-shaped vessel, 180 m in length and 25 m wide is floating in saltwater on an even keel
draft of 8.0 m. An empty forward midship compartment, 20 m in length is bilged. Calculate
the drafts forward and aft after bilging.
(R9, Q4)
Draft after Bilging : F = 13.21875m ; A = 5.62500m

5. A ship of 120m length has an even keel draft of 7m when it grounds lightly on a smooth rock
at a point 5m aft of the forward perpendicular. The tide then drops 1.2m. Calculate the final
drafts and GM if the displacement is 12,400tonnes, initial GM is 0.2m, MCTC 140, TPC 18,
KM 7.15m, LCF at amidships.
(R8, Q5)
Final GM= -0.09368m | Final Draft: F = 5.71660m ; A = 7.71749m
