Mothers of Preschoolers of St.
Andrews is starting its 21st year
of meetings at the Parish Hall of
St. Andrew The Apostle Church
Gibbsboro/Voorhees. Over the
last two decades, hundreds of
moms have enjoyed this special
community of moms, where they
can share the ups and downs of
raising preschool-age children
while enjoying breakfast and
some great social time.
I remember sitting in church
and watching all the young fami-
lies come in. The babies would be
crawling up and down the pews
every time the moms and dads
stood or knelt during the service. I
knew a MOPS group was needed,
and I wanted to meet other moth-
ers of young children, said Leta
Strain, founder of the local group.
And 21 years later, moms still
call on MOPS of St. Andrews for
an authentic community where
they can gather to experience en-
couragement, support and hope.
It is one of thousands of local
MOPS groups across the U.S. and
38 countries internationally, serv-
ing millions of families since
1973. Denver-based MOPS Inter-
national is a non-profit ministry
that creates communities to help
Better Moms Make A Better
World.
Many join the group for friend-
ship and getting answers to ques-
tions. Jamie Williams joined
MOPS of St. Andrews after relo-
cating to South Jersey and realiz-
ing she needed a group like
MOPS not only for making
friends, but also to have an estab-
lished network to find resources
such as reputable doctors, pre-
school options and organized
service opportunities.
I was a stay-at-home mom
with my precious 12-month-old
daughter from Russia. MOPS pro-
vided a comfortable place where
my daughter could play with
other toddlers, and I could share
my journey through motherhood
with others, Eglas Leistiko said.
Beth Garcia remembers receiv-
ing an invitation to join MOPS
not long after her first sons bap-
tism.
I wasnt sure I could do it be-
cause I was a new mom living in a
new neighborhood and I could
barely get my baby dressed let
alone myself, but my neighbor,
Noelle, said, Just come. Those
two words changed my journey
through motherhood forever. I
cannot describe the feeling I had

The Camden County Freehold-
er Board has approved the recom-
mendations of the Open Space
Preservation Trust Fund Adviso-
ry Committee to award the 2014
Recreation Facility Enhancement
Project Grants. The grants, fund-
ed through the Camden County
Open Space Preservation Trust
Fund, are presented to existing
publicly owned recreation facili-
ties planning to expand their uti-
lization for recreational purposes.
These grants are an opportu-
nity to build and enhance our
parks and playgrounds through-
out the county. We know these
passive and active recreational of-
ferings make Camden County a
special place to live and improve
our overall quality of life, said
Freeholder Jeffery L. Nash, liai-
son to the Open Space Preserva-
tion Trust Fund Advisory Com-
mittee. This years applications
represented a wide range of proj-
ects throughout the county. We
appreciate the hard work and
planning that went into each re-
quest.
Each year, municipal organiza-
tions are invited to submit an ap-
plication detailing the enhance-
ments planned for their existing
recreation facilities for considera-
tion by the advisory committee.
The requests for funding are lim-
ited to $25,000 per project, per
year. The projects must be com-
pleted within a one-year period.
The Camden County Open Space
Preservation Trust Fund was cre-
ated by the Freeholder Board in
1999 in response to overwhelming
voter support of an open space
referendum placed on the ballot
in November 1998.
Voorhees was among the grant
recipients. A $25,000 grant was
awarded to Voorhees to install ex-
ercise equipment at Connolly
Park, and to place swings and
mulch in the Sandpiper and
Green Ridge Playgrounds. A
$22,600 grant was awarded to the
Lions Lake Girls Softball organi-
zation to replace the dugout roof,
cap fences and construct a stor-
age container at their field. The
Voorhees Environmental and
Cultural Education Foundation
received at $25,000 grant to install
rock gabions and plant a wild-
flower meadow at their facility.

The Voorhees Animal Orphanage will
hold its 18th Annual Woofstock on Satur-
day, Sept. 20, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at
Connolly Park. It is the biggest fundraising
event of the year for the orphanage.
Woofstock will feature festivities for ani-
mal lovers of all ages and their leashed
pets, including pet contests, music and
food. There will be an alumni parade, mi-
crochipping for $25, and appearances by
the Mummers, Master Chef Joseph Poon
and animal communicator Dr. Liz Severi-
no.
The event will also include a flea market
from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Admission is a $1 donation, but senior
citizens and children under the age of 12
enter for free.
The Animal Or-
phanage is dedicat-
ed to enhancing the
quality of life for
animals and people
through compas-
sion, respect and
education. A nur-
turing environ-
ment of caring and
commitment is evi-
dent in everything
they do.
Since 1988, the
Animal Orphan-
age has been pro-
viding shelter, food and medical care to
stray and unwanted animals until perma-
nent homes can be found. Each year, the
Animal Orphanage takes in nearly 1,500
abandoned, unwanted stray and owner re-
linquished animals. In 2009, the Animal
Orphanage rescued 275 adoptable animals
from high kill shelters along the east coast.
All of these animals would have been euth-
anized. Every animal in the shelter re-
ceives individual consideration, whether
the animals are healthy, elderly, underaged,
sick or injured. The shelter and its volun-
teers care for approximately 150-200 ani-
mals on a daily basis.

ew Jerseys trial run if you
can call it that with red light
cameras didnt go so well. For
drivers who ran red lights, it went
swimmingly, but for the state not so
much.
Last week, word came down that
some drivers who were caught on cam-
era running red lights were never in-
formed of the fines they faced because
of a technical glitch in the system. The
state Judiciary, as a result, asked local
courts to throw out the infractions all
17,000 of them.
In New Jersey, red light camera in-
fractions result in an $85 fine, but no
points on a drivers license. At $85 a
pop, thats $1,445,000 in lost revenue, all
because of a technical glitch from a
company that supposedly specializes
in this.
State lawmakers are angry, and
rightfully so.
Said Assemblyman Declan OScan-
lon, of Monmouth County: These
companies incessantly tout the sup-
posed accuracy and consistency of
their systems when the only thing
consistent about the camera company
representatives is their blatant misrep-
resentation of what the equipment
does and how accurately it does it.
People make mistakes, but this is a
big mistake by American Traffic Solu-
tions, which runs half of the states in-
tersections with red light cameras.
Lets just switch to the other compa-
ny that runs our red light cameras,
you might say. Well, the CEO of that
other company, Redflex, was just in-
dicted on federal corruption charges
for allegedly bribing Chicago officials.
Not to mention, a former Redflex exec-
utive also accused the company of pay-
ing bribes to government officials in 13
states, including New Jersey.
Seems to us that these red light cam-
eras, or at least the companies that
were hired to run them, need to be re-
moved, or at least replaced. Theres no
sense in paying for a service thats ei-
ther ineffective or, worse, possibly ob-
tained through illegal means.
We in New Jersey do enough wrong
ourselves that we dont need an outside
company to come in and screw things
up for us; were plenty good at that our-
selves, thank you very much.
The contract for red light cameras
expires in December, and it would be
best if the state didnt renew the agree-
ment, not until it studies its full results
and finds a new company or two to pro-
vide the service.
in our opinion
State should red light cameras

With the start of another
school year, its useful to know
how much reliable information
students and parents can find to
do homework from a home Inter-
net connection through services
offered by the Camden County Li-
brary System.
This year, the library is again
providing library cardholders
free access on its website to the
services of www.tutor.com. Stu-
dents and adult learners can get
one-on-one online tutoring to help
with their homework questions at
www.camdencountylibrary.org/t
utor. Also Kids Zone is a special
section on the librarys website
that includes homework help in a
variety of forms for younger stu-
dents. Go to the librarys home
page at www.camdencountyli-
brary.org/ and click on Using the
Library at the top where visitors
will find the Kids Zone menu that
includes a link to the Homework
Help page.
The Homework Page has a va-
riety of websites that are great
sources of information for stu-
dents and parents. The page also
offers a link to Ask a Librarian
service by email, telephone or on-
site at one of the librarys eight
branches.
Searchasaurus is one of the re-
sources available on the home-
work help page that enables stu-
dents and their parents to search
thousands of articles. It has an
online general encyclopedia and
an animal encyclopedia that of-
fers a lot of information about an-
imals from around the world.
According to EBSCOhost, the
online publisher of
Searchasaurus, it is an animated
interface with a dinosaur theme
that encourages young re-
searchers to develop their basic
search skills. The Homework
Help page also offers Primary
Search, a database geared to find-
ing age-appropriate magazine ar-
ticles for children.
Some of the sources on Kids
Zone such as Searchasaurus re-
quire a barcode number found on
the back of any valid library
card, but many of the online
sources do not require a card and
are accessible from any Internet
connection at www.camden-
countylibrary.org/homework-
help.
The Teen Space is a special sec-
tion on the librarys website that
offers, among other features,
homework help from a variety of
resources that are organized by
different subjects, including near-
ly every high school subject from
poetry to geography to math.
The Teen Space can be reached
from the Camden County Library
homepage at www.camden-
countylibrary.org Again, visitors
should go to Using the Library
where theyll see a link to the
Teen Space that offers a Home-
work Help section which in turn
provides websites on a variety of
high school subjects. Resources
marked as Subscription Data-
base require a library card while
others are accessible to anyone on
the Internet.
Another useful tool on the site
are Subject Guides or PathFinder
links that clue visitors into all the
resources about a given subject
that are available at the library
through books, articles and even
related websites on the Web.

Special collection days protect

the environment
Each year, Camden
County residents keep
more than 400,000
pounds of hazardous
material from the
county waste stream by
participating in our
Special Household
Waste and Electronics
Collection Program.
These convenient drive-through disposal
sites are held several times a year through-
out the county.
The next Freeholder-sponsored House-
hold Hazardous Waste Collection Day will
be held on Sept. 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00
p.m. at the Pennsauken Landfill, located at
96000 River Road in Pennsauken Town-
ship.
We all can do our part to keep the envi-
ronment healthy by bringing oil-based
paints, solvents, thinners, pesticides, her-
bicides, gasoline, kerosene, polishes, pho-
tographic chemicals, automotive batteries,
antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission fluid,
other car products, pool chemicals and
cleaning fluids for disposal.
This program provides one of the easi-
est and most convenient ways for all resi-
dents to chip in when it comes to creating
a better environment for us all. It is a pri-
ority of the Freeholder Board to provide
this service to residents. By disposing of
this material properly we keep it out of our
waste stream and prevent it from making
its way to our waterways.
On Sept. 27, we will have our next
Household Electronics Collection Day.
Drop off your outdated and unused items
from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Camden
County Public Works Complex, 2311 Egg
Harbor Road in Lindenwold.
From televisions to computers, many
products that used to be solid waste are
now E-waste and can no longer be put
curbside to be picked up on trash day.
State law prohibits mu-
nicipalities from picking
up these items in the
curbside trash, so this is
the perfect opportunity
for residents to properly
dispose of unwanted tel-
evisions and computer
equipment. Recycling
these items will prevent
harmful materials such as lead, mercury,
cadmium and chromium from being re-
leased into the environment.
Items that will be collected at no charge
include: computers, keyboards, VCRs,
scanners, DVD players, tape players, mon-
itors, stereo equipment, typewriters, print-
ers, TVs, laptops, modems,
telecommunication equipment, fax ma-
chines, adios, answering machines and
telephones.
With such rapid advancements in tech-
nology, Im sure there are residents out
there with electronics piling up multiple
computers or phones for example. If you
bring those items to this free event, every-
thing will either be refurbished for future
use or recycled to help protect the environ-
ment.
For a complete list of what to bring, and

broken my arm, Gilbert said.
Running for me is a form of
prayer. Its a time to be alone with
your thoughts. Some people go for
walks and have conversations
with God. I go for long runs and
have conversations with God.
For Gilbert, running is not
only for her spiritual experience,
but also for her health. Running
has many medical benefits, and
for Gilbert, it keeps her healthy
and physically fit. It even helped
her when she experienced a med-
ical emergency.
Running actually saved my
life when I had a medical night-
mare. A scheduled outpatient sur-
gery (unrelated to running) that
unfortunately resulted in a life-
threatening surgical error, four
compromised organs and three
more surgeries in a period of 10
weeks and landed me in the hos-
pital 23 days. If I had not been
physically fit, I would not be here
today, Gilbert said. I survived
the surgical nightmare because I
was so physically fit. Running
healed me and will continue to
keep me physically fit and
healthy.
Gilbert started running be-
cause she loved the outdoors and
just likes to run. She ran her first
5k in 1989 after her daughter was
born. That lead to 10ks, then to
half marathons and marathons,
and finally to ultras, which are
100-mile runs.
Ultras then lead to 24-hour
runs, which Gilbert had done pre-
viously in Wakefield, Mass. She
placed third in the 2012 24-hour
endurance run there, winning a
medal, plaque and cash prize.
However, Wakefield is a six-hour
drive compared to the three hours
to Danville.
Yet, Gilbert didnt start off
with the idea to go to the Montour
24. She originally was training for
the NJ Ultra Trail when she
broke her arm. Unable to compete
in the run, though she did walk a
10-mile loop with her broken arm
in a sling, Gilbert went searching
for other races and found the
Montour 24.

GILBERT
Continued from page 1
please see GILBERT, page 14
Gilbert built up to her 100-mile runs
During the race, Gilbert said
the hardest part was when she
had to change her shoes. She likes
to change her shoes mid-way, and
after running for so long, her feet
were feeling tired. Luckily, after
five minutes of putting her toes
in a basin of ice water, and put-
ting on new socks and shoes, her
feet were energized.
She did get a blister while run-
ning, which is the biggest hazard
for a runners feet, but Gilbert
had it quickly taken care of. An-
other hazard for runners is sleep
deprivation. But for Gilbert, that
is not a problem.
I am used to it. I never sleep,
Gilbert said about long races. I
dont do that. I continue because
Im afraid if I take a nap I wont
get back up.
For Gilbert, after all of the
ultra races she has experienced,
she felt there wasnt really any-
thing hard about the race overall.
Medical aid was there, food was
provided, and the runners were
encouraged by families, friends,
volunteers and even fellow run-
ners, making the experience
more enjoyable.
You never know what kind of
day youre going to have, good day
or bad day. You could fall over a
tree root and fall flat on your face,
or you could have a great day and
place, Gilbert said. Ultra run-
ners are very kind people and
cheer each other on and we keep
each other company because it
can get very lonely. We support
each other.
Gilbert doesnt want to stop
with just the Montour 24. She not
only plans to race it again next
year, but she plans to race in the
New York Tesla Hertz Run in Oc-
tober and a run in the Maryland
C&O 100 mile race in April.
Gilbert has advice for those
who are regular runners and
wish to partake in a 24-hour or
Ultra 100 race.
Train well for it. Prepare. Be
very disciplined, stay focused and
start off slow, because you have 24
hours. Put one foot in front of the
other and stay hydrated and fill
your body with calories, Gilbert
said. You have to be very patient
and stay focused. In these runs,
there is no sense of time and
space, you just do it.
