Ever since she was young,
Medford resident Hannah Turck
always dreamed of singing in
front of thousands of people at a
major concert
venue.
Not only did
she get her
chance on
stage, but she
would end up
singing with a
country music
star.
On Aug. 15,
Turck's dream
became a real-
ity as she per-
formed We Were Us with Keith

One night, Dave Bermingham,
a founding member of Medfords
M-Town Jazz Band, had a dream.
He dreamt about how he start-
ed a jazz festival and how it be-
came one of the biggest music
events in Medford.
On Sept. 13, Berminghams
dream will become a reality.
Bermingham is helping to or-
ganize the first-ever Pinelands
Jazz Festival, to be held at the Dr.
James Still Historic Site and Edu-
cation Center.
Bermingham is organizing the
event with Janet Carlson Giardi-
na from the Medford Historical
Society. Earlier this summer,
Bermingham approached Giardi-
na with the event.
She immediately loved the
idea, Bermingham said. She
had been planning an event in
September, so she already had the
date.
Originally, Giardina wanted to
have a band perform at the house
in a much smaller-scale event.
After Bermingham got involved,
the event evolved into a daylong
celebration of music, complete
with two stages, vendors, food
and more.
Bermingham said the
Pinelands Jazz Festival will be
one of the few in the surrounding
area.
Theres a Willingboro jazz fes-
tival for quite some time, but this
seems like a nice hole for some-
thing like this that Ive been
working, he said.
The purpose of the festival is to
raise money for both the South
Jersey Music Education Partner-
ship, a nonprofit organization
awarding scholarships to musi-
cally inclined students, and for
the Dr. Still House.
The biggest hurdle in planning
the festival has been money. So
far, the festival has sponsors com-
mit about $1,000. However, with
expenses totaling approximately
$3,000, Bermingham and Giardi-
na needed another way to raise
money.
They began a fundraising cam-
paign on the website IndieGoGo.
The hope is to cover the remain-
ing expenses with fundraising so
the event can send proceeds to the
respective nonprofits.
Bermingham originally used
IndieGoGo to do some fundrais-
ing for his band.
I had success a few years ago
with M-Town Jazz Band, he said.
We financed an album through
that site.

Sheriffs department warns
of ongoing phone scam
There is an ongoing telephone scam ref-
erencing the Burlington County Sheriff s
Department. According to Sheriff Jean
Stanfield, a suspect identifying himself as
a member of the sheriff s department has
been calling victims and informing them
that they have a warrant issued for their
arrest on failure to report to jury duty. The
suspect then advises victims to purchase
Vanilla Visa or Green Dot cards to pay the
fine. Once purchased, the suspect advises
the victims to go to the county building at
49 Rancocas Road, Mt. Holly, threatening
that they will be arrested upon entering
the building and therefore should verify
the numbers and amounts on the card
prior to entry.
The sheriff s office would never contact
residents in this manner and does not so-
licit bail or fine money for payment over
the phone. The Burlington County Sher-
iff s Department and the Burlington Town-
ship Police Department are currently con-
ducting a joint investigation into the scam.
If you are contacted, please immediately
contact detective Paula Fox of the Burling-
ton County Sheriff s Department at (609)
265-5578 or detective Marc Carnivale of the
Burlington Township Police Department
at (609) 239-5859.

N
ew Jerseys trial run if you
can call it that with red light
cameras didnt go so well. For
drivers who ran red lights, it went
swimmingly, but for the state not so
much.
Last week, word came down that
some drivers who were caught on cam-
era running red lights were never in-
formed of the fines they faced because
of a technical glitch in the system. The
state Judiciary, as a result, asked local
courts to throw out the infractions all
17,000 of them.
In New Jersey, red light camera in-
fractions result in an $85 fine, but no
points on a drivers license. At $85 a
pop, thats $1,445,000 in lost revenue, all
because of a technical glitch from a
company that supposedly specializes
in this.
State lawmakers are angry, and
rightfully so.
Said Assemblyman Declan OScan-
lon, of Monmouth County: These
companies incessantly tout the sup-
posed accuracy and consistency of
their systems when the only thing
consistent about the camera company
representatives is their blatant misrep-
resentation of what the equipment
does and how accurately it does it.
People make mistakes, but this is a
big mistake by American Traffic Solu-
tions, which runs half of the states in-
tersections with red light cameras.
Lets just switch to the other compa-
ny that runs our red light cameras,
you might say. Well, the CEO of that
other company, Redflex, was just in-
dicted on federal corruption charges
for allegedly bribing Chicago officials.
Not to mention, a former Redflex exec-
utive also accused the company of pay-
ing bribes to government officials in 13
states, including New Jersey.
Seems to us that these red light cam-
eras, or at least the companies that
were hired to run them, need to be re-
moved, or at least replaced. Theres no
sense in paying for a service thats ei-
ther ineffective or, worse, possibly ob-
tained through illegal means.
We in New Jersey do enough wrong
ourselves that we dont need an outside
company to come in and screw things
up for us; were plenty good at that our-
selves, thank you very much.
The contract for red light cameras
expires in December, and it would be
best if the state didnt renew the agree-
ment, not until it studies its full results
and finds a new company or two to pro-
vide the service.
in our opinion
State should red light cameras
Corruption, technical glitches cause companies to fall short

The Protestant Community
Church of Medford Lakes will
have a special program on Sun-
day, Sept. 21, in conjunction with
the International Day of Peace.
Distinguished speakers and inter-
active workshops will be offered
from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
In the wake of the school vio-
lence at Sandy Hook School in
Connecticut in December 2012,
the church began a peace initia-
tive aimed at Gods call for peace-
making and the non-violent life.
Rev. Robert Moore, executive
director of the Coalition for Peace
Action, will join Rev. Steve Win-
kler of Protestant Community
Church for a special worship
service at 10 a.m. to start the days
events.
Three interactive workshops
will be offered from 11 to 11:45
a.m. They will include Peace Be
With You by Cara McCray, a
practicing holistic nutrition con-
sultant as well as a meditation,
yoga, and qi gong instructor; Al-
ternatives to Violence by Rev.
Moore; and Quaker and Men-
nonite Communities A History
of Intentional Peace by Sue
Dietz of the Medford Quaker com-
munity; and Tim Darling of the
Mennonite Church of Vineland.
Children in attendance will be
busy with creative projects that
will be part of a closing service.
A forum and complimentary
lunch will be held from noon to 1
p.m. It will bring together three
experts whose lives were changed
forever because of gun violence.
Participants will include:
Bryan Miller, executive di-
rector of Heeding Gods Call, a
faith-based movement to prevent
gun violence.
Movita Johnson Harrell, ex-
ecutive director of Motivations
Education Consultation Associ-
ates. She lost her son in a sense-
less shooting and turned her grief
and anger into positive activism
by starting the Charles Founda-
tion.
Rusty Williams, an or-
dained minister who is a former
paramedic, bomb dog handler
and retired police detective who
served on the governors panel to
reduce school violence.
For more information, call
Kathy Roberts at (609) 744-9979.

He said the festival fundraising
has gone well so far. The festival
hopes to raise $2,000 on In-
dieGoGo before Sept. 13.
Were almost there, last count
were at $1,340, Bermingham
said. But Im pretty confident
well get to our goal.
The festival will feature a mix
of professional and student musi-
cians. There will be a main stage
where the main acts will perform
at the top of every hour.
The event will also feature stu-
dent performances in between
the professional bands.
Bermingham hopes the festival
will connect some of the students
with the bands and musicians.
We have this side stage called
the woodshed that will feature
young musicians in the area, he
said. Theyre going to play dur-
ing the intermission, so there will
be non-stop music playing from 10
a.m. to 5 p.m. Were hoping that
maybe even some of the profes-
sional musicians will come and
play with the students.
Outside of the music and ven-
dors, the festival will also feature
arts and crafts as well as a dog
run. Members of the historical
society will be giving tours of the
education center and historic
site.
Tickets to the festival are $5
and include access to all of the
music, tours, vendors and crafts.

PNC Arts Center in Holmdel.
It was just something I want-
ed to do since I was a little girl,
Turck said.
Turck, 18, earned the chance to
sing after winning a contest held
by Thunder 106, a country music
radio station based in Eatontown.
After hearing about the contest
and receiving encouragement
from her family and friends, she
decided to submit an audition
video.
I love to sing and I always
wanted to be on a stage that big,
she said. I love Keith Urban.
Thunder 106 held the contest to
find someone to perform We
Were Us with Urban. In his
album Fuse, Urban performs
the song with country singer Mi-
randa Lambert. However, with
Lambert unable to be at the Aug.
15 concert, Thunder 106 looked
for an area singer to fill the void.
Days after submitting her
video, Turck learned she was the
singer chosen.
It was so surreal, Turck said
upon learning she had won.
Turck has been a singer for
most of her childhood. She per-
formed in the chorus in elemen-
tary school and in ensemble in
middle school. She has spent
some time singing at local events
such as the Harvest Festival in
Marlton. In addition, Turck
writes her own songs during her
free time.
I absolutely love it, she said.
I love the people and I love the
music. I'm a huge supporter of
people who pursue their pas-
sion.
Even though she always had
dreams of performing in front of
a large crowd, taking the stage at
the PNC Arts Center was beyond
anything Turck could imagine.
When I was waiting off the
stage, I was thinking 'Oh my
goodness, there's about 30,000 peo-
ple out there,' Turck said.
After talking for a minute with
Urban and saying hi to her family
in the crowd, the song began, and
all the nerves Turck felt disap-
peared.
When I stepped on the stage,
all my fears went away, she said.
I thought to myself, 'This is al-
ways where I wanted to be.'
At the end of the night, Turck
received a surprise from Urban.
He left her a guitar with a special
message.
It was a gift to say thank you,
Turck said. He said 'Hannah,
thank you for filling in for us.' He
signed his name. It was really an
awesome surprise.
A 2014 graduate of Shawnee
High School, Turck began attend-
ing Mount St. Mary's College just
days after the concert. While
Turck plans to focus on academ-
ics and earning her degree, she is
not giving up on her dream of
having a career in music.
I want to be able to have the
best of both worlds, she said.

ance with Urban, visit
