1) When was the Organization founded?
The United Nations Organization was founded right after the end of the Second
World War on June 26
th
, 1945 in San Francisco.
2) Why was it founded?
It was founded in order to maintain international peace and security, to develop
friendly relations among nations and to promote social progress, better living
standards and human rights; to make the world a better place for all people.
3) How many Member Countries were there at the time of its creation?
There were 51 Member Countries at the time of its creation.
4) Which are the 6 organs of the UN?
The six main organs of the United Nations Organization are:
General Assembly
Security Council

5) Mention the 4 main purposes of the Organization
The 4 main purposes of the UN are:
To keep peace throughout the world
To develop friendly relations among nations
To help nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to
conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each
others rights and freedoms
To be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve these
goals.

It completed its task in 1994 because in that year Palau, the last remaining United
Nations Trust Territory, reached its own independence. So, all Trust Territories had
attained self-government or independence by 1994 and its task was accomplished.
10) Describe the UNs emblem and explain what it represents
The current United Nations emblem was approved on 7 December 1946. This
emblem is made of a map of the entire world which is surrounded by olive
branches. This emblem represents that olive branches, which mean peace, have to
be the main objective of the world.

The current Secretary General is Ban-Ki-Moon and he is from South Korea.
12) Who was the previous Secretary General?
The previous Secretary General was Kofi Annan and he is from Ghana.

A Secretary General stays in office for five years and can be reelected; the
decision depends on the votes of the Permanent Members of the Security Council.

The eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are:

To achieve universal primary education.

The UN promotes peace giving a framework for the peaceful settlement of
disputes, protecting human rights, making maintenance of peace and developing a
growing body of international instruments; it also promotes disarmament and the
use of preventive diplomacy, gives electoral assistance, supports democratization
and promotes economic and social development. Throughout the years, the UN
has solved several international conflicts among nations; for instance: thanks to a
peace settlement sponsored by the UN, the war between Iran and Iraq ended; it
played an important role in solving the civil wars in Cambodia, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Mozambique and other countries. If there is a war between two
countries, the UN sends the blue helmets in order to preserve the peace.
