5. CourseOutline
The student is introduced to the fundamental concepts of structural dynamics, to the
mathematical formulations for the various structural applications, to methods of
solutions, to the nature of the results to be expected, to the observed behaviour of
structuralmembersaswellassystems,andtothecurrentdesignconcepts.

Thepurposeofthiscourseistoimpartanunderstandingofthedynamicbehaviourand
strength of structural members, to develop the ability to read the pertinent literature
and to understand related design codes. Current lines of thought and activity are
discussed and the student is encouraged to do research and to keep up with future
developments.

Each topic will be developed in logical progression with uptodate information with
reference to structural dynamics applications to earthquake engineering and its codal
provisions. The course material on structural dynamics will be very useful to
undergraduatestudents,postgraduatestudents,teachersandpractitioners.Anumber
ofmodelproblemswillbesolvedtoillustratetheconceptsclearly.
