Rest and sleep are two essentials of life and bodily function that have an
importance unrecognized by most people. According to the Division of Sleep
Medicine at Harvard Medical School, rest and sleep play a vital role in
promoting physical health, longevity, and emotional well-being.
Table B presents the different activities related to rest and sleep
practices. It can be gleaned that the item have nap in daytime (at least 26
minutes between1-4 PM) got the highest weighted mean. This implies that the
respondents often practice napping in the afternoon. However, this is not
practiced on regular basis which is insufficient and not a healthy lifestyle to
achieve optimum health beneficial to the prostate.
This result to the study conforms to their profile along civil status that
majority of them are married. This finding of the study is associated that
married people carry more responsibilities than single ones. The bulk in their
responsibilities are married individuals affects how much time they give to take
good care of themselves, have inadequate sleep, commune with nature and
hang out with friends. Since they devote much to their family, they fail to
incorporate self-care behaviors in to their daily activities (Aromin, 2007). Such
failure put them at risk for benign prostatic hyperplasia and eventually
developed the disease condition in the long run.
Subsequently, the item sleep at least an average of 8-10 hours in a day,
items practice relaxation techniques such as watching TV 2-3 hours, reading
pocketbooks, communing with nature and hanging out with friends, are
categorized as often practiced. In line with the study, majority of the
respondents belong to overweight and obese class 1 which is found to be
directly proportional to their inability to sleep at 8-10 hours per night on daily
basis. Studies assert that when body is deprived of sleep, the normal hormone
balances are interrupted and appetite increases. Unfortunately, this increase in
appetite doesnt lead to craving for fruits and vegetables. Rather, the body
longs for foods high in calories, fats, and carbohydrates (Kolata, 2007).
Furthermore, the result of this study conform that they vary in the night
time sleep that helps them feel rested and able to maintain desired levels of
activity (Reiner, 2007). The findings of the study also imply that they have only
limited time to engage in relaxation techniques. Their insufficient time to relax
their body and mind is not sufficient to achieve a healthy prostate. It can be
pointed out that in terms of the profile of the respondents, majority of men with
benign prostatic hyperplasia are in late adulthood. During this period, their
amount of sleep decreases due to cronic illnesses (Ferber, 2007).
In terms of occupation, the result is supported by the result of Turkeys
test the teachers by profession have a mean of 4.63 and ranked the highest.
This implies that most of respondents are teachers who are very busy in their
work which hinders them to have adequate amount of rest. In addition, they
use television and read pocketbooks like readers digest as instruments to
impart their lessons through current events and research updates. This means
that watching television is their priority to relax their body and mind and to
update themselves to current events, political news, and other events no longer
than 2-3 hours on a daily basis. Furthermore, most of them are public utility
drivers, nurses, fishermen, factory workers, and occupation that is operated
even night time are reasons that disrupts their amount of sleep.
Conversely, the item have meditative techniques daily like reading the
bible, yoga, communing with God, etc. got the lowest weighed mean of 3.8.
This reveals that the respondents have less amount of times 10 to read the
bible, communing with God, and meditative techniques. This is associated that
most of their respondents are farmers who are busy in the farm all day long
and teachers who are spending most of their time at school as supported by
the Turkeys test result. The findings of the study is also associated that
certain lifestyle factors like yoga could work wonders in helping to prevent
prostate problems such as an enlarged prostate, known as benign prostatic
hyperplasia (BPH). Particular poses in yoga encourage circulation to the
prostate and increase flexibility in the entire pelvic area. Through both
relaxation and strengthening the pelvic floor muscles, men with enlarged
prostates benefit from yoga. (www.livestrong.com, 2011). Expressing feelings
which include letting your thoughts and emotions be known by talking with
friends, family, councillors, or some individuals in whom you can confide is
helpful to BPH. Exposing internalized feelings in a controlled situation is a
healthy way to cope with stress. Participating in activities that you enjoy and
that allow for some form of expression is also helpful to lessen sign and
symptoms of benign prostate problems. Engaging in a hobby or creating
activity or providing care for pets or others through volunteer work can all be
beneficial forms of expression.
The extent of lifestyle practices of men with benign prostatic hyperplasia
along rest and sleep practices brought an average weighted mean of 3.84
registered as often practiced which means that the respondents fail to practice
the aforementioned activities on regular or daily basis. The findings of this
study show that the time spent for the activities along rest and sleep practices
are insufficient or inadequate which risks them to the development of benign
prostatic hyperplasia.
