The busiest time of the year for Bali has passed, but that does not mean the ow of
tourists to the island has ceased. For our readers who have just arrived to our little
tropical paradise, welcome! The trafc on the roads is a bit less packed compared to
the few months that came before, so we decided share with you some off-the-beaten-
track options in case anyone is interested in a little road trip!
In CRAFT & CULTURE we head to East Bali to visit the Bali Aga in Tenganan Dauh

ORIGINAL BALINESE
Bali Aga means original Balinese.
Most Balinese are descendants of
the Majapahit Empire, but the Bali
Aga in East Bali are the original,
pre-Majapahit aboriginal people
of Bali, who celebrate their culture
with unique temple ceremonies and
festivals since time immemorial.
Wandering through the village
of 759 people, I couldnt help but
notice how modern the houses
were even the temple entrances
looked new. Wayan explained that
the major eruption of Mt. Agung in
1963 destroyed much of the village,
and in 1979 another eruption
caused further damage. Only a few
houses made of the original clay
remain; most have been replaced
and with stronger building materials.
A durable dirt path connects the
house compounds and the temples.
The government came here
in 1990, and after much village
discussion the two banjar [councils]
refused the governments offer
to modernize the road within the
village, Wayan explained. We
like it this way, and besides, asphalt
is too hot.
This Bali Aga village is comprised
of four associations one for
married men, one for married
women, one for boys and one
for girls. Many rites of passage
exist within these groups. Those in
the youth association are taught
karma desa at around seven years
of age, learning all about their
responsibilities and the duties they
will have to perform.

DANCES OF BALI AGA
The calendar is full of temple
ceremonies and festivals, with events
appearing every month that involve
unique arts. Classical dances like
the Abuang dance for young boys,
the sacred Rejang dance and the
solo Baris dance are performed with
elaborate ceremonial dress and
headgear unseen in other parts of
Bali. Their dances embrace a
proud history.
A crowd favorite is the Baris
dance, which is performed by men.
The dancers split into opposing
armies carrying sacred artifacts
and symbolic weapons for magical
strength. The century-old unique
versions of these dances can only be
witnessed in the Bali Aga villages of
East Bali.
USABA SAMBAH
FESTIVAL
Ritual battles take place in a number
of old Bali villages in Karangasem,
accompanied by the pounding
rhythms of the ancient gamelan. A
special event on the fth month of
the Tenganan year is the festival
of swings, or the Usaba Sambah
Festival. Usaba Sambah started on
July 9 and concluded on July 25 of
this year.
Many neighboring villages
converge on Tenganan Dauh Tukad
to witness the vibrant events of the
month. Wayan said that his village
welcomes the increasing number of
visitors and he proudly showed off his
collection of photos from past events.

He explained the coconut event,
where young boys balance up to
40 coconuts on a shoulder pole
while dodging ying bananas. If
the boys get distracted and drop a
coconut, they get ned. Of course
the bananas hit them left, right and
center, and there is quite the ruckus.
This unique event tests strength, focus
and concentration.
The swing ceremony resembles
the old Vedic rites, and boys and
girls climb onto a tall wooden
ikat cloth produced in this village is
said to have protective powers. It
takes one year to make one of these
ikats, which is a masterwork of the
traditional textile art.
The cloth is believed to be the
inspiration of Batara Indra, or the
Creator, who when contemplating
the moon and stars and heavens
was called upon to teach the
women of Tenganan the intricate
ikat patterning. This practice is
centuries old.
In the nearby Bali Aga village of
Tenganan Pegringsingan (the larger
of the two villages with over 1,000
people), burials are done much
differently. The bodies are wrapped
and placed under a tree that is said
to have magical powers. The bodies
laid out under this tree decompose
over time but do not smell. By some
magical, unexplained phenomena
they slowly rot without animals
coming near them or any sort of
infestation taking over. After some
structure. A turning platform propels
a series of wooden swings and the
girls swing high above the ground.
This is symbolic of the unication
of the sun and the Earth, and is
the highlight of the Usaba Sambah
Festival.
GERINGSING CLOTH
As I wandered the quiet streets, the
soft clack, clack, clack sound coming
from looms could be heard through
weathered doorframes. The double

Tenganan Dauh Tukad, the most
recent one being in 2005. Ten
bodies were exhumed from their
temporary resting place in the
ground and cremated together.
A mass cremation is for
cost cutting purposes, because
cremations are very expensive
affairs, Wayan explained. It takes
many years to save for one.

of old Bali Aga are still as alive
today as they were thousands of

t had been awhile since
my last sailing experience,
which to be honest, had not
been a pleasant one. Luckily
for me, what WakaSailing
provided for me recently was
an experience bordering on
perfection that quickly remedied
my views on sailing.
Even those who dont consider
themselves outdoorsy will love
what WakaSailing has to offer
a luxury catamaran, excellent
food and beverages, well-tailored
activities, stunning views and A+
service.
RISE & SHINE
Our group arrived at the Waka
Marina starting point by 8:30
a.m., where the staff greeted us
with refreshing welcome drinks.
Everyone seemed concerned with
making sure our journey would be
unforgettable. Not only did they
offer us cool towels and seasickness
remedies, they also gave us tips on
how to enjoy our sailing experience.
By 9:00 a.m. we had departed
from Benoa Harbor on our way to
beautiful Lembongan Island, located
off the southeast coast of Bali.
EASY AS PIE
It took us two hours until we arrived
at Lembongan Island. For me, those
hours did not feel long at all as
I really enjoyed relaxing on the
catamaran. A catamaran is a type
of yacht with two hulls, which give
greater stability during sailing.
Gala Underground House, a unique
underground house consisting of
linked tunnels and caves. It was
built singlehandedly by a man
named Made Byasa from 1961 to
1976, inspired by the Mahabharata
folklore.
The house serves many functions,
including spiritual needs such as
meditations, and we learned that a
few days before our visit a couple
from Russia had taken advantage
of the Gala-Gala house for spiritual
purposes.
After visiting Gala-Gala, we
continued on to the seaweed farms.
Next to the farm area is a small
market selling local goodies where
we shopped for a bit before heading
back to the beach club.
BEACH CLUB ACTIVITIES
At the beach club we were
welcomed by an all-you-can-eat
buffet lunch an assortment of Asian
delights and some international
selections. My favorite was the grill

a bar and lounge, a fantastic sound

After our arrival we headed
to the beach club, where again
the Waka staff greeted us with
excellent hospitality. Soon after we
were given two options; exploring
the village or taking part in beach
club activities such as snorkeling or
kayaking.

I expect a cruise director to be able
to answer spontaneous questions
from tourists, and our WakaSailing
cruise director did not disappoint.

station, which served up delicious
beef and chicken satay.
After lunch we were offered
the opportunity to either join the
second session of snorkeling or to go
kayaking. We opted for snorkeling,
and then boarded the glass bottom
boat provided by NusaBay that took
us to the snorkeling spot. There we
spent about an hour enjoying the
beautiful underwater scenery.
WRAPPING UP THE DAY
Afterwards we headed back to the
beach club to relax. The beach club
is equipped with a swimming pool,
sunbathing spots, restrooms and
changing rooms, a volleyball court,
a restaurant and a lounge. Free Wi-
Fi is also available.
It took us only an hour to sail back
to Bali. Time ew by as we enjoyed
sundowners and another round of
free ow drinks and fresh fruit, and
by 5:00 p.m. the journey was over.
Its an experience I really recommend
whether youre one half of a
traveling couple, here with a group
of friends, or have children with you!

Inspiration comes mainly from the
outstanding locally sourced sh from
Indonesian waters, especially the
red snapper, barramundi and yellow
n tuna. Indonesia is the worlds
second largest sh producer and
offers exceptional sh so good that
Skelly imports very few sh products,
normally just the Tasmanian salmon
and the urchins that are air freighted
twice weekly from Japan.
In Chef Skellys opinion, local
sh can be invariably let down
by inferior handling, preparation,
and cooking techniques. So he not
only handpicks the nest quality
and freshest sh in the market
from carefully chosen sources and
suppliers, but he and his kitchen
team also purchase the seafood
whole and prepare it themselves
with top-notch methodology from
cleaning and deboning to tartare
treating each sh with reverence.
U
rchin is the kind of
sought-after seafood
that is classed
alongside caviar as a
great delicacy, and it
seems only tting that the new niche
seafood restaurant in downtown
Seminyak is named after it. In just
a handful of months the Urchin Grill
and Raw Bar already has seafood
acionados, foodies and off-duty
chefs hooked on its ever-changing
market dictated menu.
Helmed by Chef Stephen
Skelly, the former head chef at
Sydneys famed Pier Restaurant,
it is perhaps his twelve years of
culinary experience in Australia that
has nurtured his passion for and
mastery of fresh seafood. When
given the opportunity to open his
own restaurant in Bali, backed by
The Colony Hotel, the British chef
chose contemporary seafood as the
restaurants core offering.
Preparation is key, declares
the chef. Each sh has its own
personality and characteristics,
so different techniques should be
used. You cant just lump them all
together.
Chef Skelly may come across
as your typical rock n roll chef
with his spiky hair, London accent
and opinionated manner, but
dont be deceived. He also bears
the perfectionism and wisdom
of a Japanese sushi master and
his meticulous sh selection and
preparation errs on the side of
obsessive. You can taste the high
quality and insane freshness, and
each dish is presented beautifully.
Urchin is seafood-led, produce-
driven and strives to deliver
exceptional standards without the
fuss of ne dining, says Skelly. The
menu items are not cheap (Entrees
start at Rp. 90,000 while Mains
start at Rp. 160,000), but you

pay for what you get, without the
pretentiousness.
The ambiance is modern and
stylish yet casual and intimate, like
an extended family dining room.
Within, the simplistic textured
interiors feature recycled wood
bench tables, timbered oors and
an open kitchen of gleaming steel
(note the copper urchins swimming
across the walls). Outside, the street
side patio edged with comfy sofas is
a suitable spot for cocktails from 3
or fabulous seafood delicacies in
too small a quantity for the main
menu.
A fair part of the Entrees
section is devoted to raw dishes,
including Bites + Starters like the
Individual Cones of Tartare, playfully
suspended in a metal holder.
A Pier signature is the Coral Trout
Carpaccio thinly sliced trout that
is delicately acidic and complex
with fennel pollen and dill oil sauce
accentuated with fern tips and
broccoli (I could eat bucket loads of
the stuff).
The Yellow Fin Tartare is
conversely robust and deep avored,
with chunky red cubes laced in soy,
mirin, caviar and enoki mushroom
p.m. onwards try the Hibiscus Kiss,
which is a wonderful mix of hibiscus-
infused vodka, muddled orange and
kemangi.
TAKING THE BAIT
The market-dictated menu ensures
that aside from the sashimi and
tartares, guests can look forward to
an ever-changing Raw Bar menu.
It relies on availability on a daily
basis perhaps a shipment of freshly
shucked oysters in from Sydney

indulgence. The divine Passion
Fruit Souf is served with a smile
literally with one of the wait staff
carving a smiley face into the souf
crust at the table to reveal humor
and the delicately tangy passion fruit
sauce underneath.

We caught up with restaurateur Chef Luke Mangan of
Salt tapas & bar during one of his recent visits to Bali.
Bali & Beyond (BB): Youve got numerous Salt restaurants
around the world, including the one in Jakarta. What makes
Salt tapas & bar in Seminyak unique?
Luke Mangan (LM): I love Bali, and Ive always liked this
location [at Peppers Sentosa Seminyak]. Its sort of off the
beaten track and I think when people walk in, they go
Wow. Youve got the pool its very sort of Miami/L.A.
And our food is quite different to anything else in Bali. Theres
no point in doing a restaurant where all your competitors are
doing the same.
BB: So thats why you chose to do little bites and tapas
instead of something like what you have in Jakarta?
LM: We thought about doing a Salt grill here, but there are
so many restaurants with a grill concept and I just thought we
needed something different.
BB: What are your personal favorites on the Salt tapas menu?
LM: Well, the sashimi with ginger dressing is a signature,
the licorice parfait for dessert We do great pork sliders.
Those things are some of my favorites. Theres also a beautiful
halloumi salad with chickpeas; theres a nice sh tagine. Its
all about sharing.
BB: Would you recommend Salt tapas for families?
LM: Yeah! The family program on Sundays is building and Im
going to do it on Saturdays as well.
BB: How would you describe Bali?
LM: Relaxing, peaceful, calming when youre not in traf c!
Great food, beaches I really enjoy it. I kind of switch off
when I come here, which is nice. And I think that shows in the
restaurant, too. I want it to be relaxed and casual. Were not
ne dining.
If youre in the Uluwatu area at dinnertime, you should try
SONO Teppanyaki at the Anantara Bali Uluwatu Resort
& Spa. The boisterous and cheeky chefs had us chuckling
throughout the entire meal, and we were absolutely stuffed
by the end. We especially recommend this if you have kids
in tow.
Heres a fun fact you can use the pool at Peppers
Sentosa for free! So grab your swimsuit, round up
your pals and enjoy a dip. When your stomach
starts to grumble, youll know exactly what to
do next.

Located only 1.5 hours from the
Ngurah Rai International Airport,
Candidasa is a charming seaside
area that is reminiscent of South Bali
years ago. In Amlapura there is an
adorable resort called The Nirwana
with 18 garden facing and ocean
facing villas. So no matter which
villa you stay in, youre guaranteed
the bonus of being lulled to sleep by
the sound of crashing waves.

here is no denying that
Ubud and Uluwatu
are ideal locations for
couples who want to
stay holed up during
their time in Bali. But for those who
have already been to Bali a handful
of times, or those who want to go
somewhere more off the beaten
track, East Bali offers idyllic settings

QUIET AND QUAINT
The Nirwana is not particularly
ashy, nor does it boast the kind of
interior design or amenities that you
would nd in the modern hotels of
South Bali. However, it does exude
the kind of old Bali charm that is
subtle and comforting, and in a way
quite addicting. The staff there tread
lightly and speak softly, but at the
same time are relentless in ensuring
that guests enjoy their stay.
Coconut trees surround the
modest innity pool facing the sea,
and though there is no beach, just a
wall that drops down to the water,
the azure colors of the Indian Ocean
that are visible from the pool and
the resorts restaurant are positively
hypnotizing. Aside from the view,
the restaurant offers a surprisingly
Biaha. Further north is Amed (check
out last months edition to read
about free diving in this area), and
Tulamben with its famous USAT
Liberty wreck dive site.
To have a relaxing day
somewhere closer to the resort, try
White Sand Beach. To be fair, the
sand here is not as white as what
you would nd in Uluwatu or Pecatu,
but it is a pleasant and clean beach
with sun loungers for hire and simple
kiosks offering food, beverages and
massages at fair prices.
To get some culture, hire a car
and spend the day exploring Tirta
Gangga and Taman Ujung. Theres
also the option of touring Tenganan
village, which you can read all
about in the CRAFT & CULTURE
section of this edition.
For our last recommendation,
well let you in on a little secret.
There is a place by the sea where a
man named Charlie has a chocolate
factory ask The Nirwana staff
to help arrange your visit as there
is no signage on the road. Aside
from chocolate, Charlies team also
makes lovely soaps on the premises.
Our all-time favorite discovery there
was the sea-facing swing that looks
like it was plucked out of a dream
(turn to page 40 in this edition to see
our snapshot of it).

never wanted a dog! I arrived
on the island with my backpack
and no xed agenda, but one
fateful morning a shy little Bali
puppy with black fur and white
spotty legs came wandering into my
guesthouse in Kuta and changed my
life forever.
She was a mangy little thing, all
covered in ticks. I trotted her off to
the vet who said she was close to
dying. I fed her and cleaned her up
and asked the manager if she could
live at the guesthouse. He wasnt

enthusiastic, but he didnt say no.
And with just a little TLC she has
now been saved.
We call her Lucky, because she
had indeed struck a lucky day when
she wandered into our big grassy
Eden full of backpackers, where
she was cuddled and coddled and
grew into a rambunctious pup. The
Balinese staff kept a wary distance;
none of them had ever had a pet
dog before.
While in some countries dogs are
cherished pets, the traditional role
of a Bali dog (closely related to the
dingo) is a guard dog, protecting
homes and compounds from human
intruders, evil spirits and snakes. But
they watched and laughed as Lucky
chased imaginary (or not) spirits
around the garden, caught ies, got
into ghts with the big old tom cats,

joyfully ripped apart Birkenstocks,
and enthusiastically shook paws for
banana jafes at breakfast.
And one by one, all the staff
eventually fell in love with her,
because they saw what happens
when you love a Bali dog. Lucky
with her black shiny coat, cheerful
nature and Scooby Doo-like vocal
range, was becoming a mascot
for Bali dogs, a glowing example
of just how awesome, funny and
companionable a Bali dog can be.
Nearly two years later when Lucky
and I moved out to the rice elds,
the staff begged me not to take her,
but by then there was no denying
she was my dog.
She was truly one of the lucky
ones; sadly, many Bali puppies
(especially females) are simply
abandoned. Some survive or
manage to nd a home but others
are left to eke out an existence as
street scavengers, prone to disease
and abuse. But things have come a
long way since my rst trip to Bali in
2002, when my impressions of the
island were dominated by visions
of the beautiful tropical owers
that proliferated in Ubud, and the
malnourished, mangy dogs that
roamed its streets.
Twelve years later, BAWA (Bali
Animal Welfare Association) has
done much to improve the lives
of dogs and animals in general
in Bali, providing an ambulance
service, street-side care and mobile
sterilization clinics. When rabies
broke out a few years ago, it was
BAWA who jumped into action
providing mass vaccinations.
Animal welfare is understandably
not always a top priority in
developing nations, so some of
BAWAs most important work has
been in the area of education and
awareness.
Sustainable animal welfare
will only be achieved through
efforts at a grassroots level, says
BAWA founder Janice Girardi.
She has introduced fun and
innovative programs to schools and
communities across the island, the
most popular being The Bali Dog
Idol competition, where school kids
are given young pups and taught
how to look after them over a period
of months leading up to the well-
attended nal where the best looked-
after puppy wins.
Over in the village of Suwat in
Gianyar, BAWA in collaboration
with IFAW (International Fund for
Animal Welfare) have launched a
pilot program called Participate,
Learn, Act. Working with village
leaders, children and womens
groups over a period of two years,
they have encouraged independent
responsibility for animal welfare and
taught the villages how to properly
care for their animals.
As Janice says, Many Balinese
previously thought Bali dogs were
aggressive, could not be handled
and could not make good pets. In
Suwat, people now understand that
the opposite is true and they really
love their dogs.
In fact, the villagers are so proud
of their canine companions that they
formed the islands rst Bali Dog
Club to protect the heritage breed,
believed to be one of the oldest
and most genetically pure in the
word. They also staged the islands
rst-ever independently run dog
competition in December of
last year.
Animal lover and Banjar head,
Pak Wayan Sugiarta, dressed up his
three dogs Blacky, Edo and Rambo
in preparation for the contest,
proudly walking them around the
village in the days leading up to the
event. He claims, The aspiration of
our people is that they are willing to
support and preserve the Bali dog so
the breed will not disappear from the
Island of the Gods.

and Sumatra. Considered to be very intelligent, 96% of their genetic makeup is

The restaurant recently renewed

Pebbles, their custom 66 foot
handcrafted Philippine Bangka boat
is moored just offshore, and serves
as a base station for the yboarding
sessions. The water propulsion system
is a 125cc Jet Ski engine that has
been cleverly retrotted by Richard

Flyboarders begin their adventure
by heading out to Pebbles from
the main dock on a dinghy named
Wilma. After watching one of the
local experts demonstrate the proper
technique and the many impressive
maneuvers, riders are prepped and
ready to launch.
Its amazing to witness the array
of stunts that can be performed,
including ying underwater, back
dives and launching high into the air
like a breaching whale. Watching
someone hover 3-4 meters high with
water shooting from beneath their
feet is simply mystifying! When its

At rst it is a bit intimidating to

another; let a sense of fairness
be encouraged amongst fellow
mortals.
A patterned piece of amethyst-
colored cloth was wrapped around
the old mans shoulders. As he
smiled, the traces of wisdom painted
by old age were evident on his face.
As one of the elders in the
Buddha Jawasanyata council, it is
Ngatonos task to keep the religious
peace in Ngadas, the village of his
birth that he now serves. Buddha
Jawasanyata was practiced by the
entire village until the mid-80s,
but then gradually the community
also began to embrace Islam and
Hinduism.
Ngatono welcomes the change
surprisingly. In life, we have to love
each other, he said. We should
not let differences stand in the way
of our happiness.
A COMPLEX HISTORY
With grandfatherly patience,
Ngatono explained to me how the
teachings of Dharma have only
been applied to his village for a few
decades now.
It was 1992 when their followers
of Buddha Jawasanyata were rst
exposed to the grand spiritual gure

of Siddharta Gautama. The fact
that there were Buddhists who were
unfamiliar with Siddharta Gautama
might raise some eyebrows, but the
tale is as intricate as the contours of
the landscape that kept Ngadas and
the Jawasanyata teachings isolated
for more than three centuries.
Jawasanyata used to be the only
concept the Ngadas villagers were
familiar with. In Jawasanyata, God
is called Sang Hyang Wenang
and is at the top of the theological
ladder, worshipped as the ruler of
the universe. Right below is Eyang
Ibu Bumi (Grandmother of Earth),
who is worshipped for ensuring the
earths fertility. And then there are
Ki Semar and Sri Raja Mahadewa
Buddha; both believed to be Gods
messengers and spiritual gurus
teaching of compassion.
During the political upheaval in
1965, the New Order regime issued
a policy where each and every
Indonesian citizen had to choose
one of the countrys ofcial religions:
Hinduism, Buddhism, Catholicism,
Protestantism, or Islam. Everyone
else would be considered atheist or
communist, and therefore enemies
of the state who faced persecution.
Even those in the most remote areas
of the archipelago were made
aware of this.
In the early 70s we decided
to choose Buddhism. The reason
was obvious; not only did the
Jawasanyata teach us Ngadas
people to walk in the way of
Buddhism, but we were also familiar
with Sri Raja Mahadewa Buddha,

witnessed the happiness radiating
from their faces. They seemed to
so look forward to celebrating the
birthday of Siddharta Gautama, the
spiritual teacher that they had just
gotten to know.
Only recently we started
celebrating Vesak in Sumberawan
under the guidance of Walubi I
think it was around 1998, said
a villager named Pawi while
wrapping a piece of cloth around
his head. But next week well
hold our own Vesak celebration
in Ngadas and invite Walubi and
our friends from other sects to come
and share the joy.
Four decades ago the charming
people in this hidden Shangri-
La began to practice Buddha
Jawasanyata, with the concept
of Dharma applied less than two
decades ago. Although their unique
beliefs have the potential to create
dispute, the people in the area keep
the peace by holding fast to the
idea that differences are created by
God as a source of happiness, not
chaos.

birth of Buddha Jawasanyata.
He chuckled as he recalled
the rst time he saw Siddhartha
Gautama on an altar in 1992, and
began to learn about the different
rituals practiced by the various sects
under Walubi. Walubi is short for
Perwakilan Umat Buddha Indonesia
Indonesias most notable Buddhist
organization.
On the second of November in
1992, I decided to dig deeper into
Buddhism, he said. For three years,
as he gathered information on how
to establish an organization under
Walubi in Malang, he learned about
the teachings of Dharma.
CELEBRATING VESAK
The day following our conversation
the villagers of Ngadas headed
to the city of Malang, as they had
been invited by Walubi to celebrate
Vesak together. The old man invited
me along so that I could see for
myself the special rituals of Buddhas
birthday celebration.
Fog hid the morning sun as the
people of Ngadas piled into the back
of a truck. In the bed of the moving
truck I stood among the villagers and

expedition on August 20 deep into the forests of Kalimantan to bring six
Kenyah Dayaks back to the spiritual burial grounds of their ancestors.
Accompanying them were an Indonesian musician from the band Navicula,
a Native American documentary lmmaker, the founder of the Heart of
Borneo foundation, a JIS alumni student and a Javanese local conservation
guide. The group hopes to raise awareness about the Dayak people and

The MetaMan Bintan 2014 triathalon was recently held
from August 23 to 25, and among the participants was
Indonesias champion triathlete and Olympic swimmer
Andy Wibowo, who competed in the Half Triathlon.
International athletes included Fredrik Croneborg,
Gina Crawford, and legend Cameron Brown of New
Zealand, who won the Full Triathlon and rst prize of
US$ 30,000. The event, now in its third year, attracted
approximately 500 endurance athletes from over 30

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot
more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most
hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For Bali
Belly, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms,
but not gastro-related infections. A fever along
with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed
antibiotics.
Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic
drinks under various brand names are widely
available and are known to replenish body
hydration and replace uids. For discomfort,
diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea;
avoid fruits and spicy foods.
Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue
fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas.
Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not
required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions
easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them
immediately.
Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit
before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at
reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe.
Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun.
Use high SPF sunblock and a hat.
AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases
are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers
have multiple partners from around the world.
They are not checked for sexually transmitted
diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms,
available over the counter at pharmacies.
