Fears and tears mark the dawn of change.

In 2011, I was just 30 km away

from a 5.5-magnitude earthquake during a community service trip in
northern Thailand. This life and death event kindled my spark to pursue
management as my interest of study.
Throughout the incident, I witnessed worries and sufferings in the escape
and rescue process. This also prompted me to acquire more knowledge
about how people and resources management work even in adversity.
My community-service projects such as road repairing, fund raising and
library building at poor areas in Vietnam, China, Thailand and Hong Kong
inspired me to ask how business management can help people there to
improve their livelihood. These projects really motivated me to
research more into the causes of poverty, and how it can be alleviated.
While there are several areas in business that interest me, I am particularly
drawn to the topic of management. The Rules of Management by Richard
Templar is the book that inspired me to navigate the sails of wisdom.
Through his 107 illustrated rules about people, teams and ethics, I now
understand more about human dynamics in the business environment.
Together with my regular reading of BBC news, TIME and other Asian
business materials in English and Chinese, a clear global vision has
supported me to pursue management studies. As part of my interest in
business, I studied a 2-week 'New Perspectives: Mathematics, Economics
and Management' course in Oxford in 2011 to strengthen my
understanding of business.
Furthermore, I was honoured to represent Hong Kong in the Beijing
International Culture Camp to widen my international exposure. Mingling
with hundreds of delegates from 16 countries, I learned about cultural
diversity from a global perspective. In 2013, I was selected to attend the
Barclays Insight Day that allowed me to see how different business
strategies and tactics interacted to create substantial impacts to the global
market. Moreover, I joined the FedExInternational Challenge to present a
business plan, marketing a solar cooker in Ethiopia, which trained me to
practise planning and research intensively. These endeavours paved my
way for the future, where I have to think outside the box in problem solving
and to pay respect to cultural differences in decision making.
As a Student Councillor, my leadership ability was enhanced by devising
and leading activities such as raising funds in the Walkathon for the
Children's Cancer Foundation. I practised how to organise events, foster
cooperation, and motivate teammates, which are conducive to
my management development. Through the 2013 Business Innovation
summer programme organised by the Hong Kong University of Science
and Technology, I learned how complex theories can be applied in real life
situations like the creative positioning of the legendary Queen's ware
of Wedgwood. My performance was also proven when I earned the
Distinction Award from the Dean of Students. To achieve study-life balance,
I enjoy both painting and basketball. My artistic sense was endorsed when
I won the 2012 Outstanding Asian Art Award in an open competition; and
mypersistence was also recognized when I was chosen to play for the
school team. My artistic sense and persistence will be beneficial for my
study of management subjects like marketing, leadership and research.
Again, all the above exposures fuelled my passion to become a
manager ready for tomorrow's changes.
Upon graduation, I would like to further my education with a postgraduate
degree and aspire to contribute fully to the university community by being a
future mentor for the undergraduates.
For my longer-term career plan, my vision is to establish a profitable
business which is both socially and environmentally responsible. I dare to
change, and I strive to be a well-rounded individual to remain liberal at
mind and amazingly simple at heart in my search for excellence.
