Dear Mr. Steigelmar,
This class was very helpful in terms of writing technical documents for the future. I learned many new
techniques and how to evaluate my work for usability. The strategies that I employed when writing
papers for class were: to closely follow instructions. The format of assignments is set up so that students
can be successful, by carefully explaining and using headings to separate sections, l was able to be very
confident in doing assignments. I also made sure that l was familiar with the information that I was
writing about. By being familiar with the content, information flows more freely when writing up an
assignment. These strategies were very effective and made the assignments enjoyable because the
strategies use enabled me to be successful
Writing, as other things we encounter day to day is a process. This is a process that involves strategizing
just as other processes. I learned that in order to be a successful writer when it comes to a technical
nature, you must have a strategic plan for laying out the material that you wish to write about. By
understanding the topic, the components necessary to make the document clear, and the information in
the components, writing a technical document becomes more manageable.
Technical documents are very different from academic papers. Technical documents are based more on
something that is more useable in nature such as manuals, memos, proposals and reports. Academic
papers are more of an informative nature and help increase knowledge about a certain area. Technical
documents have been easier for me to create because they feel more like my interpretation of a process
versus the academic paper that is more based on the works of others
The understanding of a technical audience greatly shapes the content and layout. When the needs of
the audience are understood, you can present content in a way that is most useable to that particular
audience. Some audiences are more novice than others and need more beginner-appropriate content.
Layout is also shaped by the audience. A more accessible layout would be more acceptable for people
who may need more understanding. They may need information to be broken down more than an
expert. Pictures and more headings may be necessary.
I think that all the writing assignments have been extremely useful this semester. Technical writing is a
major part of several different fields. The practice and evaluation of our documents can provide great
foundation on which we can base future technical documents that we may have to write.
Sincerely,
Tony Meza

TED
TECHNOLOGY, ENTERTAINMENT, DESIGN
Ideas worth spreading

INTRODUCTION
I propose that I research the TED non-profit organization. TED is an acronym for Technology,
Entertainment, and Design, which, theoretically, is what the conferences they host are focused on, but
has spread its educational purpose to the hard sciences, art, politics, culture, business, and global issues
to support their effort to promote ideas worth spreading. TEDs flagship conference, The TED
conference, takes place anually in Long Beach, California. TEDx is a spin-off of the original conference,
which allows anyone the opportunity to present their own independent conference under the brand
name for free. The objectives of this proposal will be: the problem that TED addresses and their
solution; the benefits of this report; my approach and probability of success in completing the report;
and my qualifications for submitting this proposal.
PROBLEM
The problem is not as urgent as world hunger, or a global epidemic, but important none the less because
it affects every issue. The world is filled with brilliant minds, and those minds create wondrous ideas
every day. However, what if no one ever comes forth, and brings it to light to show the world, that idea
gets lost forever, or until someone else rediscovers it. The idea would have lost the precious time to
grow in the minds of others and develop into something truly revolutionary. Anyone of those new ideas
could potentially end world hunger, cure disease, or move us further into the future. This is the problem
that TED hopes to address.
SOLUTION
TED has helped solve this issue by hosting live conferences bringing together the worlds leading
thinkers to share what they do and what they know. The Internet has become a powerful resource since
its inception, with it the ability to share knowledge to billions of people around the globe. One of the
most successful initiatives in the digital age is the TED website, which primarily hosts video
presentations given at TED conferences. Their goal is to change or expand how people think and to use
the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives, and ultimately the world.

BENEFITS
This non-profit offers several benefits to both the individuals as well as the larger global community.
Likewise, completing this report on this organization is beneficial to audiences who can learn more
about this worthwhile cause. The topics discussed in TED talks can be informative to anyone in virtually
every profession by providing knowledge from experts their field.
Educational
TED is widely considered the new top-prestige education brand of the 21
st
-Century, with the
goal of sharing ideas as freely and widely as possible to create a global classroom.
Global Access
The TED website has made video content truly accessible to a global audience, in several
translations, all for free online. TEDx allows people around the world with more underprivileged
backgrounds, an opportunity to have their ideas be heard.
Recognition
TED also helps unnoticed speakers gain some credibility, and recognition which leads funding
from sponsors through TED talks. This kind of support could be just what an idea needs to
properly take off and have a global impact.
Collaboration
At these TED events, brilliant minds are given the opportunity to exchange and engage in
collaboration of knowledge and ideas, which can be used to make a great contribution to the
world. To help the global community connect, TED.com has allowed people to have
conversations and plan meetings, with people across the globe.
TED not only offers a new genre of communication, but it promotes an infectious way of learning to
people all around the globe for free. Lastly, TED is a catalyst for new ideas, and challenges people to
think of big and crazy ideas to change the world.
APPROACH
July 21st-July 25th: Research TED non-profit
July 26th-July 27th: Write Report's Introduction and Problem
July 31st: Submit rough draft & Complete Drafting Report/Revise Report
August 4th: Submit Research Report to ANGEL & Draft PowerPoint Presentation
August 5th: Upload PowerPoint Presentation to ANGEL dropbox
August 7th: Present Powerpoint in class.

PROBABILITY
While I hope to fulfill all my time goals, my work hours may interfere with my progress during the
weekdays and greatly limit the amount of time I have to work on this report. I also need to finish some
of the quizzes as well. My plan for accomplishing this assignment, in a timely manner, is to work the
weekend, and even weeknights, if possible. However, I assure you, the completion, and quality of my
work will not suffer due to other obligations or interference in my schedule.
QUALIFICATIONS
I feel qualified to do this report because personally, I am very enthusiastic about the organizations
cause, and I support their mission to promote ideas worth spreading. I have seen countless interesting,
and thought-provoking seminars on their website about revolutionary ideas and innovation. I have
learned numerous things from TED already and I have a desire to learn more about the organization. I
am also dedicated in my research and I am confident that I will, to the best of my ability, give an
extensive and complete report of this non-profit.
RESOURCES
I will use Academic Search Complete and JSTOR from NCTCs Library online databases. Also, I will use
multiple credible websites including the TED website.
CONCLUSION
In all, TED is an incredible non-profit that takes tremendous strides into the future. While Im not
claiming this organization is the solution to every problem, it does create the potential to, better than
most. TEDs benefits include: informative conferences; global education model; free access to their
services; opportunity for recognition; global collaboration; and promoting innovative ideas. Finally,
please accept my proposal to do research, and learn more about the TED non-profit organization.
Thank You.

Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) is a major non-profit organization focused on the
power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world.
PROBLEMS TED ADDRESSES
TED focuses on several concerns mainly including: undiscovered ideas, lack of higher
education, lack of knowledge sharing, ignorance to global issues.
IDEAS UNDISCOVERED: The world is filled with brilliant minds, and those minds create
wondrous ideas. The average number of thoughts that humans are believed to experience
each day is 70,000 (Brain Trivia). However, if no one brings that worthwhile idea to light
to show the world, that idea could be lost forever, or until someone else rediscovers it. The
idea would have lost the precious time to grow in the minds of others and develop into
something truly revolutionary.
LACK OF EDUCATION: studies have shown that education reduces mortality rate,
decreases economy, and increases disease. People around the world lack any form
schooling, much less higher education; in fact, 6.7% of people on Earth have a college
degree (Wilson). This greatly limits the potential for global contribution in every academic
field of study.
ACCESSIBILITY KNOWLEDGE: Most things of value arent cheap by any means, and
knowledge is no exception. Experts of all professions often offer their insight and trade
tricks for an expensive price; and Universities require a certain record of academic
excellence, and charge a tuition fee to learn from the top professors to become experts as
well. The average cost of tuition and fees for the 2014 school year was $30,094 at private
colleges (Price). It isnt very often that this knowledge is ever available to the public for
free.
WORLD ISSUES: Many people are sympathetic to any humanitarian cause, but rarely do
they actively participate, or even attempt to understand what is really going on in the
world they live in.
Many people, most of them in tropical countries of the Third World, die of preventable,
curable diseases. Malaria, tuberculosis, acute lower-respiratory infections
Ken Silverstein, Millions for Viagra. (Shah)
There are a lot of global issues that could be solved if the rest of the world knew they
existed. While someone across the globe may know the solution, they may never get the
opportunity to use it.
4
SOLUTIONS TED OFFERS
TED has helped address many of these problems, by hosting live conferences that bring
together the worlds leading thinkers to share what they do and what they know.
The Internet has become a powerful resource, since its inception, with it the ability to share
knowledge to billions of people around the globe. One of the most successful initiatives in
the digital age is the TED website, which primarily hosts video presentations given at TED
conferences. Their goal is to change or expand how people think and to use the power of
ideas to change attitudes, lives, and ultimately the world.(TED
(TED.com)
TED offers several programs and initiatives to help their effort to promote ideas worth
spreading. The table below shows some of the programs and initiatives and their
respective purposes.
TED
Conference
The flagship TED conference is held annually in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The breadth of content includes science, business, the arts, technology and
the global issues facing our world. Over four days, 50+ speakers each take an
18-minute slot.
TED.com
TED.com is the flagship website for hosting, and translating TED Talks, as well
as sharing ideas.
TED Talks
TED Talks are videos that present a great idea in 18 minutes or less. "Long
enough to be serious and short enough to hold people's attention says
Chris Anderson (Fisher). Theyre filmed at TED conferences. Their goal is to
share Ideas Worth Spreading around the world.
5
TED Open
Translation
Project
The Open Translation Project is a global volunteer effort to subtitle TED Talks,
and enable the inspiring ideas in them to crisscross languages and borders. To
date, over 15,000 volunteers have created more than 50,000 translations in
104 languages.
TEDx
TEDx program supports individuals, organizations and communities
worldwide hold local, independent TED-like events in their own community.
TEDx events are planned and coordinated independently. To date, more than
9000 TEDx events have been held in 150 countries.
TED Prize
The TED Prize is awarded annually to an exceptional individual with a fresh,
bold vision for sparking global change. The TED Prize winner receives
$1,000,000 to make their dream become a reality.
TED
Fellows
The TED Fellows program invites innovators from around the globe to
become part of the TED community, and amplifies the impact of their
remarkable work. Every year, the TED Fellows program nurtures the vision
and passion of thought leaders and trailblazers, giving momentum to their
ideas. The program is a hub for cross-disciplinary collaboration, connection
and innovation.
(TED)
6
BENEFITS OF TED
This non-profit offers several benefits to both the individuals as well as the larger global
community. The topics discussed in TED conferences can be informative to anyone in
virtually every profession by providing knowledge from experts in their field.
DISCOVERY: TED also helps unnoticed speakers gain some credibility, and recognition
which leads funding from sponsors through TED talks. The million-dollar TED Prize also
offers the kind of support an idea needs to properly take off and have a global impact.
EDUCATIONAL: TED is widely considered the new top-prestige education brand of the 21
st
-
Century (Kamenetz), with the goal of sharing ideas as freely and widely as possible to
create a global classroom.
ACCESSIBILITY: The TED website has made TED talks truly accessible to a global audience
through TED.com, in several translations, all for free online. TEDx allows people around the
world with more underprivileged backgrounds (Kamenetz), an opportunity to have their
ideas be heard.
COLLABORATION: Through the TED fellows program, brilliant minds are given the
opportunity to exchange and engage with ideas and each other, which can be used to make
a great contribution to the world. To help the global community connect, TED.com has
allowed people to have conversations and plan meetings, with people across the globe
(TED).
CONCLUSION
In all, TED takes tremendous strides into the future of communication. It establishes what
very few organizations can a global community of thinkers. TED not only offers a new
genre of communication, but it promotes an infectious way of learning to people all
around the globe for free. Lastly, TED is a catalyst for new ideas, and challenges people to
think of big and crazy ideas to change the world (Kamenetz). With TED we are able to see
that these topics are all interconnected in some way, individually they can only achieve so
much, but together the limits are boundless. This organization does exactly what it set out
to achieve and then some, when it comes to the world wide spread of ideas. Together with
the use of the Internet and it being a non-profit willing to offer all its content for free online,
free of charge, makes this organization works so well for its mission and the globe. So could
TED push our society toward a better future? Only time will tell when the next big idea
comes along that will change the world as we know it, but may it never stop trying.

TECHNICAL WRITING

1
Memo
To: John Stiegelmar
From: Tony Meza
Date: 7/14/2014
Re: Communications Design Engineer

In this memo I will be providing information on details in the field of a communications design engineer. I will show a brief
report on the things faced in this career, based an interview with a person in this profession.
The types of writing that can be expected on the job
As a communications design engineer at Verizon, there are many forms of technical writing, the main form being a
technical design document. This document is constructed once the engineer has developed a design and now has to
relay the information to his audience. The technical design document itself is an instruction manual of sorts, and
gives an overview of how the entire design works and will function, and uses diagrams to also show the design. In this
job one must also write memos and present their own design.
The types of audiences that you will be writing for as a communications engineer
There four types of audiences a communications engineer must address. These consist of the accounting sales team,
who want a marketable technical design that meet the customers needs; the support team which is broken into two
separate branches, the implementation team, who need thorough technical details in order to determine the
capability of installing the system, and the operations team, who also need enough information to determine how it
can be operated functionally as well as the capability of being maintained; and the final and most important
audience group is the customer, for whom the design was made.
What exigencies or constraints do these writers experience?
A communications engineer always face time constraints due to the nature of the process. A customer asks Verizon
to construct a design for their communications system the company provides them with one in a timely manner. The
time constraints can vary from a week to two months depending on the size of the project. If there is any resistance
from an engineers audience, the design can be revised and therefore extend the time constraint. When coming up
with a design an engineer can also face limitations in technology, as well as people with a lack of expertise and lack
of training.
The amount of writing that will sometimes be published into websites, intranets, or in print
There really is no work that gets published publically, and the technical design document is considered confidential
to the customer, the information on a project only gets shared for use in training as project examples.
This job involves a lot of technical writing and a communications design engineer has to satisfy multiple audiences in order to
successfully make the design a reality. While there are is an abundance of technical writing in many forms its clear to see
how vital it is to the people in this field, in order to create an efficient process to fulfill the customers needs.

Re: Technical Writing Analysis Assignment
Introduction
This memo evaluates the usability, audience, accuracy, purpose, and effectiveness of the In the
Community Community Development Newsletter by JPMorgan Chase. This newsletter is an
example of effective technical writing because:
Made to be highly usable
Designed for multiple audiences
Purpose is both informative and persuasive
Effectively portrays Chase as an upstanding company.
Organization
The document is well organized and follows a reasonable order and is separated in sections titled
in bold, and represents the content below it, with some having sub-sections fonts and colors to
help organize the document and page numbers on the bottom of the page. Each section also has a
graphic that shows a picture or representation of the topic. The inclusion of an image aids the
reader of the newsletter get the main idea of each section. It also has a contact information
section for readers who would like more information about the programs described in the
document.
All of the sections and their page numbers are labeled in the simple index available on the first
page to effectively navigate the document. Collectively the index, bold titles, images, and page
numbers help provide seamless flow of simple and highly usable information.
Audience
To JPMorgan Chase employees and to inform and motivate them with a message from
management, an example of leadership within the company, and information about
Chase's community service programs
To financial and real estate professionals interested in information about Chase's
community service, including specific numbers for various investments into community
housing, disaster relief, and other programs.
To consumers who have very little trust in banks how Chase is involved in community
service.
Purpose
The newsletter is accurate in accomplishing what it is supposed to do and that it is to provide
update employees and non-employees about Chases community service examples and
announcements. It can also be motivational for employees and effective for winning over
prospective customers. The language in the newsletter is very clear and relatively easy to
understand. The newsletter gives large amounts of information while avoiding technical terms
that are specific to financial and real estate professionals. The content isnt something a child
might understand but those who have a minimal understanding of finance will have no problem.
This document is relevant because it is important to Chase to uphold their image within
communities.

Introduction
This is document an evaluation on websites appealing to technical and non-technical websites on
astronomy.
Technical Weather Websites
The two websites intended for a technical audience include a website for research in the Astronomy
Program at The University of Texas, and another research page by the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology.
The visual presentation
The website from the University of Texas is organized in a logical manner with simple navigation using
menus to links to other university departments, and every link on the research page. The page itself also
has images, representing all the areas of research in the astronomy program. While this website may
not seem too complicated, the research included within in each field contains visuals of complex
astronomical data. The MIT astronomy research website is fairly different from the previous one. This
website is very simple and has a top menu and the astronomy page lists current and previous research
projects. The only images on this page are of very technical data. In both websites, they serve their
purpose to an audience that is expected to already know what they are looking at.
The site design
The page itself also has images, bold titles, and sub-categories representing all the areas of research in
the astronomy program. The research websites, while different visually, provide the same functional
purpose to experienced individuals in this field of study. There is no need for useless imagery for people
who have already invested their time in astronomy. Basically, they both replace visual stimulation for
useful content and functionality. However, these sites would be most useful to you if you were an
astronomer tracking a specific comet. The research could be used by any audience with a clear
understanding of the topic, including fellow researchers, students, professors, as well as, astronomers.

The style and tone
The styles of both research schools are extremely technical and require extensive prior knowledge to
understand; it may even specific to the individuals who conducted the research. The tone is direct and
informative, giving the impression that its purpose is professional.
Nontechnical Weather Websites
The two magazine websites intended for a non-technical audience are the Astronomy Magazine for
Kids page and the Sky and Telescope: Stargazing Basics page.
The visual presentation
The visual aspects are more appealing than the more technical websites. On the top of The Astronomy
Magazine website for kids, there is daily astronomical observation widget. There are also options to
follow the company on social media sites as well. The Sky and Telescopes page has visual qualities much
like the previous one. Advertisements and prompts for subscriptions are pretty abundant and show that
these sites are trying to make money as well as provide the information.
The site design
Both websites are fairly similar because they were designed to attract a wide range of general
audiences. This may include young kids developing an interest in astronomy, to adults who do it as a
hobby, or someone planning on stargazing tonight. The purpose of their design is to attract potential
customers to subscribe to their magazine, and hopefully market it even further using social media.
The style and tone
The Magazine websites are in essence user friendly but, also kid friendly. The styles of these two
websites are in stark contrast to the research websites, because they are fairly simple in terms of the
language used. Most of the articles, while informative, are of interesting and fun aspects of astronomy,
with the purpose of attracting the customers and creating a tone that builds upon the idea that
astronomy is an intellectual, yet, entertaining subject.
Conclusion
Upon examining the technical and non-technical websites on astronomy there were more websites for a
general audience rather than a professional in that field of study. And while aesthetically appealing
website design is present in both types it is typically less prevalent in websites intended for professional
astronomers. The aspects of these websites do change depending on their purpose and audience they
are intended for. These rules can apply for any website

SUBJECT: EMAIL ASSIGNMENT
DATE: JULY 12, 2014

Dear Mr. Stiegelmar,
This email is pertains to the assignment that is due today for our class. I hope I can appeal to your good
nature when I explain my situation to you. The purpose of this message is to ask for a couple of days
extended to the already predetermined due date. I know very well that you had so generously given us
at least five weeks to complete, and for that I am thankful. My reason for waiting so long to do this
assignment is that for the past five weeks Ive been stranded on a deserted island somewhere in the
Caribbean. The story about how I got there, on my way to my cousins wedding is a long one, and one
Im sure you would rather be spared the details to. While I was stuck all alone on that island with no
food, and no clean water all I could think about was: how in the world am I going to finish my project
for Mr. Stiegelmar? Now that Im back there is nothing to stop me from finishing this assignment, but
all I need is your permission to do so for the next 48 hours. I hope you can understand the predicament I
was in and you can rest assured that this time I will complete it in a timely manner.
Thank you for your patience.
Sincerely,
Tony Meza
