International Symposium&Public Lecture
Started from Gwangju Spirit, which is the bedrock of the Gwangju Biennale, lecture series seek the
common value of our time. One that can be shared and empathized with global citizens.
Gwangju Spirit is a term we have heard since the days of the Gwangju Democratization
Movement in May 1980. It is also the bedrock of the Gwangju Biennale. Through debates
among opinion leaders, artists, and citizens, the roundtable discussions seeks to re-define
Gwangju Spirit and its implications for the society in the 21st century.
Visual culture, represented by contemporary artworks, reects the political, social, economic, and
cultural changes that are afoot in the surrounding society. Over the last two decades, the Gwangju
Biennale has been pioneering and shaping progressive and practical discourse in the area of visual
arts and culture. The present symposiums and lectures seek to analyze this current state of reality
in Korea, Asia, Europe, and the United States through testimonies and debates, as well as how this
reality is represented and reenacted in todays visual culture.
