The Battle of Brunanburh
In this year King Aethelstan, Lord of arriors,
ring!gi"er to men, and his brother also,
#rince $admund, on eternal glory
in battle ith sord edges
around Brunanburh. They s%lit the shield!all,
they heed battle shields ith the remnants of hammers.
The sons of $adeard, it as only befitting their noble descent
from their ancestors that they should often
defend their land in battle against each hostile %eo%le,
horde and home. The enemy %erished,
&cots men and seamen,
fated they fell. The field floed
ith blood of arriors, from sun u%
in the morning, hen the glorious star
glided o"er the earth, 'od(s bright candle,
eternal lord, till that noble creation
sank to its seat. There lay many a arrior
by s%ears destroyed) *orthern men
shot o"er shield, likeise &cottish as ell,
eary, ar sated.
The +est!&a,ons %ushed onard
all day) in troo%s they %ursued the hostile %eo%le.
They heed the fugiti"e grie"ously from behind
ith sords shar% from the grinding.
The -ercians did not refuse hard hand!%lay to any arrior
ho came ith Anlaf o"er the sea!surge
in the bosom of a shi%, those ho sought land,
fated to fight. .i"e lay dead
on the battle!field, young kings,
%ut to slee% by sords, likeise also se"en
of Anlaf(s earls, countless of the army,
sailors and &cots. There the *orth!men(s chief as %ut
to flight, by need constrained
to the %ro of a shi% ith little com%any/
he %ressed the shi% afloat, the king ent out
on the dusky flood!tide, he sa"ed his life.
Likeise, there also the old cam%aigner through flight came
to his on region in the north!!0onstantine!!
hoary arrior. 1e had no reason to e,ult
the great meeting) he as of his kinsmen bereft,
friends fell on the battle!field,
killed at strife/ e"en his son, young in battle, he left
in the %lace of slaughter, ground to %ieces ith ounds.
That gri22le!haired arrior had no
reason to boast of sord!slaughter,
old deceitful one, no more did Anlaf)
ith their remnant of an army they had no reason to
laugh that they ere better in deed of ar
in battle!field!!collision of banners,
encounter of s%ears, encounter of men,
trading of blos!!hen they %layed against
the sons of $adeard on the battle field.
3e%arted then the *orthmen in nailed shi%s.
The de4ected sur"i"ors of the battle,
sought 3ublin o"er the dee% ater,
lea"ing 3inges mere
to return to Ireland, ashamed in s%irit.
Likeise the brothers, both together,
King and #rince, sought their home,
+est!&a,on land, e,ultant from battle.
They left behind them, to en4oy the cor%ses,
the dark coated one, the dark horny!beaked ra"en
and the dusky!coated one,
the eagle hite from behind, to %artake of carrion,
greedy ar!hak, and that gray animal
the olf in the forest.
*e"er as there more slaughter
on this island, ne"er yet as many
%eo%le killed before this
ith sord(s edge/ ne"er according to those ho tell us
from books, old isemen,
since from the east Angles and &a,ons came u%
o"er the broad sea. Britain they sought,
#roud ar!smiths ho o"ercame the +elsh,
glorious arriors they took hold of the land.
