environmental performance by designing and implementing
initiatives such as the use of aerial seeding to reduce dust
and investing in a eet of some of the worlds quietest haul
trucks.
Mt Arthur Coals focus on safety in the workplace has been
recognised through a number of awards, including the
BHP Billiton HSEC Health Excellence Awards for controlling
respiratory dust impacts and reducing employee fatigue.
In 2012, Mt Arthur Coal also received a highly commended
award at the NSW Minerals Council Occupational Health and
Safety Awards for developing the Marnett belt-lifter bracket.

Mt Arthur Coal is an open cut mining
operation producing quality thermal coal
for domestic and export power generation.
Located ve kilometres from Muswellbrook,
NSW, the mine is owned and operated by
BHP Billiton.
Mt Arthur Coal is one of the largest
individual coal production sites in Australia,
currently extracting approximately 20 million
tonnes per annum, with planning approval
to mine up to 32 million tonnes from its open
cut operations.
Central to Mt Arthur Coals focus on zero harm is delivering the highest standards of environmental
performance. Mt Arthur Coal has developed a comprehensive environmental management system to monitor
and manage the impact of mining on dust and air quality, noise generation, water use and land use.
In the community, Mt Arthur Coal partners with local
organisations to support a range of safety-focused
community programs. Among them is the long-running
partnership with Hunter Life Education to provide drug and
alcohol mentoring to primary and secondary school children
in the Upper Hunter and its support of volunteer re-ghting
services.
Culture and Inclusiveness
Mt Arthur Coal has a local employment policy to maintain a
high percentage of employees from the local area and ensure
the local community benets from its operations.
Mt Arthur Coal offers a number of training and development
opportunities to establish the foundations for a full-

Action Plan, Mt Arthur Coal aims to achieve a workforce
more representative of the diverse demographics of the

Mt Arthur Coal is working to deliver a positive contribution to the local community and a balanced
lifestyle for its employees that may be enjoyed in a sought-after location with close proximity to the coast,
a good choice of local schools and community facilities.
Through its Community Development Fund, Mt Arthur Coal
has supported local not-for-prot community organisations
and charities like the License to Drive Program and the
Warrae Wanni Pathways to School program.
Mt Arthur Coal encourages our employees to make personal
contributions to the community through in-kind donations
and volunteering, and these contributions can be matched
dollar-for-dollar through the BHP Billiton Matched Giving
Program.
Since 2008, approximately $270,000 has been donated each
year to a variety of charity and not-for prot organisations
through matched giving.
Mt Arthur Coal also contributed a further $113 million in
2012-13 to the states economy through mining royalties
to the NSW Government; money that can be used to fund
schools, nurses and remen.

Mt Arthur Coal is Australias largest open cut coal mine and
has more than 3 billion tonnes of coal in the ground which

Billiton, the worlds largest resources company that employs
125,000 people in 12 countries. This means our engineers
work with world-class people, equipment and systems. It also

An engineers work at Mt Arthur Coal promises to be exciting
and challenging as they deal with the complexities of 21
different coal seams and over 200 pieces of mining machinery
including more than 100 haul trucks, 14 excavators, 39 dozers
and 3 electric rope shovels.
All this and the Hunter lifestyle offering world famous
vineyards, Lake Macquarie and the beach within a 90 minute
drive.
Operators and Trades
At Mt Arthur Coal, its been said, you can start as a trainee
and end up just about anywhere you want in the mine. The
same can be said of all our employees.
Well-designed pathways are in place for skills training.
Trainees for example will learn to operate ultra class trucks,
gain prociency on the water cart and other pieces of
ancillary equipment.
Our apprentices get nationally recognised qualications and
four years on-the-job practical training, learning from highly
experienced tradespeople with access to the latest tools and
equipment and specialist knowledge.

Graduates
Our Foundations for Graduates Program was designed
to develop our future leaders and technical experts. The
program equips our graduates with the tools theyll need to
establish and build a successful career with Mt Arthur Coal.
Graduates in our program have unique opportunities
to develop a global network of colleagues. They also
gain exposure to our operation and grow personally and
professionally in a dynamic, inclusive and supportive culture.
In addition to their day-to-day work, graduates will complete
a number of work-based team and academic activities to help
them develop in a number of key areas.
Over the course of the program, graduates will learn about
our business, our values, their team and, most importantly,
themselves. They will develop their decision-making,
communication, technical and critical leadership skills, access
executive coaching and participate in intensive residential
programs.
Support Functions
More than 200 innovative and engaged support function

with the community.
Among them are health and safety professionals,
