The Menomonee Falls Village Board was updated
on the current request for a new tax incremental finance
(TIF) district in the village.
A 12th TIF district is being proposed for land cover-
ing 107.5 gross acres (of which approximately 70
acres can be developed) on 10 parcels on the east and
west side of Lilly Road just north of Silver Spring Drive.
In a TIF, taxes for given properties normally direct-
ed toward local units of government (village, school dis-
trict, county, technical school district) are instead used
to pay for infrastructure improvements. The local units
of government will later benefit from the increased
value generated by the improvements. Final approval of
a TIF is given by a Joint Review Board comprised by
representatives of all local taxing units and a citizen
representative.
At the start of his presentation, Village Manager
Mark Fitzgerald stated that the village has closed three
TIFs since the first one was created in 1988. The eight
active TIFs have created $232.3 million in new value
through this year.
Fitzgerald also summarized requirements of a TIF,
including provisions stating that a proposed develop-
ment would not occur unless a TIF district was created.
Another provision only allows 12 percent of a commu-
nitys total equalized value to be in TIF districts.

Marching Band Madness,
Germantown High Schools invitational
marching band show, will be held
Saturday, Sept. 20, at 6:30 p.m., at Datka
Stadium at the high school.
The popular field show will feature per-
formances by high school competitive
marching bands from Germantown,
Cedarburg, Wauwatosa East, Sussex,
Brown Deer, Fond du Lac and Franklin. For
many of the bands, the event is the first
stop on their journey to the State Marching
Band Championships at UW-Whitewater in
mid-October.
Marching Band Madness brings in
hundreds of talented student musicians from
area school districts who have been prac-
ticing their shows for months, said James
Barnes, band director at Germantown High
School. Its a wonderful evening of music
that showcases the tremendous efforts of
these high school musicians.
Tickets are available at the door and
are $6 for adults, $5 for seniors age 60
and older, and $3 for kids ages 4 to 17.
Concessions will be available. The show
will move to the high schools gymnasium in
the event of inclement weather.

grandstand seating and lunch at Olive
Garden. Group will depart from

and will return at 7 p.m. Meal choice:
spaghetti, lasagna and alfredo. Price is
$78 per person. Reservation deadline is
Aug. 28.
Les Miserable musical and lunch-
eon at Fireside TheaterThursday, Sept. 18:
Bus will leave Germantown McDonalds
(located at highways 41 and 45 and
County Line Road) at 9 a.m. and return at
approximately 5:30 p.m. The cost is $99.

season Sept. 3, falling to Greater Metro
Conference rival Marquette 4-0. The loss
dropped Menomonee Falls record to 6-1.
The Indians were to play matches at the
Kettle Moraine Tourney Sept. 5-6.
Hamilton had a 2-3 overall record fol-
lowing a 2-1 loss to Wauwatosa East Sept.
3. Hamilton's goal came from Hayden Barth.
Germantown remained winless in North
Shore Conference play following a 5-1 loss
to Cedarburg Sept. 1. Germantown's goal
came from Timothy Schabel.
The Warhawks lost two of three games
at the Brookfield East Al Gusho Tournament
Aug. 28-30, dropping matches to Marquette
(7-1) and Whitefish Bay (4-0). Germantown
beat Muskego 3-0, with goals two goals
coming form Jake Jenkin while Luke Yahr
scored the final goal.
Germantown had a 2-5 overall record
prior to a Sept. 4 match at Hartford
Soccer: Hilltoppers top Falls
Menomonee Falls opened Greater
Metro Conference play with a 25-9, 25-7,
25-14 win over Wauwatosa East Sept. 3.
The conference win followed a week-
end at the Thomas More/Homestead
Joust Aug. 29-30. Menomonee Falls, the
defending Division I champion, opened
the tournament with a 27-25, 21-25, 9-15
loss to West Bend East and then lost to
defending Division 2 champion East Troy
17-25, 25-20, 13-15. Menomonee Falls
finished the first day with a 13-25, 25-22,
14-16 loss to Homestead.
Menomonee Falls opened the second
day of the Joust with a 25-16, 25-18 win
over Pius XI before losing to West Bend
East 25-20, 24-26, 11-15. Menomonee
Falls then beat Kettle Moraine Lutheran
20-25, 26-24, 15-8.
Germantown opened the Joust with
losses to Nicolet, Greendale and
Muskego. The Warhawks rebounded with
wins over Kimberly (21-25, 25-19, 15-5)
and Brookfield Central (25-15, 25-11)
and then beat Nicolet (25-22, 20-25, 15-
9). Germantown finished the day with a
23-25, 24-26 loss to West Bend East.
Hamilton opened Greater Metro
Conference play Sept. 3 with a 24-26,
20-25, 20-25 loss to Brookfield Central.
The Chargers won five matches at the
Wilmot Invitational, posting wins over
Milton (25-20, 25-21), Shoreland
Lutheran (25-19, 25-23), St. Joseph (25-
23, 25-15), Stoughton (25-21, 25-13) and
Wilmot (25-17, 25-17).
A blocked punt broke open a close
game for Menomonee Falls, as the Indians
added to a lead to defeat West Bend East
34-10 Aug. 29.
Menomonee Falls was holding to a 14-
10 lead, with the second touchdown coming
on a 5-yard run by Brandon Kvisto at the
8:38 mark of the third quarter.
Menomonee Falls defense, which
stopped a fourth-down conversion by East in
the first half, opened the fourth quarter by
allowing one first down before allowing the
Suns to punt. The punt was blocked and
recovered by Tyler Simcock at the East 20-
yard line. Michael Bowe ran it in on the next
play to give Menomonee Falls a 20-10 lead
after the extra point was unsuccessful.
The blocked punt really changed the
momentum of the game. Our kids respond-
ed really well, Menomonee Falls Coach
John Baker said.
Menomonee Falls defense stopped East
on its next possession, and Menomonee
Falls started a drive on its 32 yard line that
ended with a 1-yard run by Ben Knudsen,
giving Menomonee Falls a 27-10 lead with
5:28 remaining. Dontrell Handy scored the
final touchdown for Menomonee Falls on a
32-yard run with 23 seconds remaining.
When asked what was learned from the
win, Baker said weve got a lot of work
ahead of us. Weve got a young team and
every week is going to be a new fight and
weve got to learn to fight for four quarters.
Cedarburg 26, Hamilton 12:
Cedarburg scored the first 13 points of the
game. Hamiltons scores came on a recov-
ered fumble in the Cedarburg end zone by
Ty Botsford in the third quarter and an 8-
yard run by Isaiah Webb in the fourth quar-
ter.
Germantown 41, Hartford 7:
Germantown was undefeated during the
nonconference portion of its schedule.
Dwayne Lawhorn Jr. completed 11 of 15
passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns.
Joe Lemerond ran for two touchdowns while
Spencer Pethan scored the other touchdown
on the offense. Germantown's final score
came when Steve Doran returned an inter-
ception 35 yards for a score with 2:22 left
in the second quarter.

To the Editor:
It has been four months since that terrible
accident that took Josh and Monica Griebel
away from us, leaving behind five beautiful
children. It has not been an easy road, but
without all of the prayers, love and support, it
would have been unbearable.
How does one even begin to say thank
you when words just dont seem like enough?
The whole community has been our back-
bone during this tragic time in our lives. What
an incredible support system we have!
Our intention was to write out individual
thank you cards to everyone who has helped
us out in one way or another, but that list kept
growing and is still growing yet today. We did-
nt want to forget or leave anyone out, so we
decided to write one big thank you to all.
Where do we begin writing about all that
has been done for us? Countless hours have
been spent planning, organizing, recruiting,
coordinating, praying, etc. Everything from
benefits, individual cash donations, renova-
tions, chauffeuring, helping out with home-
work, babysitting, cleaning, donating items,
and donating of business services.the list
goes on and on! There have been so many
selfless acts of kindness and love.
Every dime raised in the Griebel name
will be put to good use, but unfortunately, we
havent been able to use any of it at this time,
so continued prayers are much needed, and
appreciated, as we are trying to make ends
meet.
Many anxieties have been laid to rest
after the last court date. We were so grateful
for the decision that allowed all of us to
remain together. We are now able to breathe
a little easier. We do know that all parties
involved truly do love the children.
You really have no idea what your sup-
port and help has meant to us. God has sent
you all to be our angels on Earth. Those that
said you would always be there for us have
been, and it means the world to us. Every day
we get a little stronger.
This verse comes to mind when we think of
all of you: If one falls down, his friend can
help him up. But pity the man who falls and
has no one to help him up. Ecclesiastes 4:10
You have all been there to pick us up!
We wish we could list everyone individu-
ally, who has helped us out, but that list would
go on and on. It is never ending!
A generous man will prosper; he who
refreshes others will himself be refreshed.

You have all been so generous to us! We
pray Gods blessings upon each and every
one of you! We hope in return to someday be
able to pay it forward, and bless others in

A 28-year-old man was arrested for
operating while intoxicated-second offense
at 4:45 a.m. Aug. 26 after he was stopped
for erratic driving at Creekwood Crossing

that he had Suboxone in his system.

A 63-year-old Sturgeon Bay man was

Weapons violation
A 27-year-old Hartford man was
cited for discharge of a weapon at 3 p.m.
Aug. 23 at his residence in the 8800 block
of Hoyt Drive. Investigation revealed the
man had accidentally discharged his
weapon into the mirror after a dry fire at
his reflection.
Warrants
A 23-year-old Milwaukee man was
taken into custody on a Milwaukee County
Sheriffs Office warrant at 10:29 p.m. Aug.
26 following a traffic stop at Woosencraft
Drive and Appleton Avenue.

Fitzgerald stated that if the Joint Review
Board approved the proposed 12 TIF dis-
trict, the village would be using 44 percent
of its potential TIF capacity.
As we put together this TIF plan, we
looked at the general area and we
spanned (west) across Lilly Road and we
saw underutilized and frankly poorly creat-
ed, relatively obsolete industrial uses and
zoned properties. We felt there was value
to place those into this TIF district as well,
Fitzgerald said.
Besides obsolete buildings and under-
utilized land, Fitzgerald cited inappropriate
utility locations and non-conforming uses,
specifically citing residences on land that
are located in heavy industrial zoning dis-
tricts.
Fitzgerald cited information indicating
that the 100 acres in the district have an
equalized value of $5,075,00 or approxi-
mately $51,000 per acre.
I would tell that is blighted value, that
is land valued that are so low compared to
modern industrial that it almost begs for a
community to take (an intervention) to move
forward in a much more robust way,
Fitzgerald said.
Information from a PowerPoint stated
that the average value for industrial land
and buildings in the village typically
exceeds $550,000.
The total cost of infrastructure improve-
ments for the area is estimated to cost $3
million.
The Village Board will discuss the mat-
ter Sept. 15. If the board supports TIF 12, it
goes to the Joint Review Board for on Sept.
23 for final consideration.
Fitzgerald said if the 12 TIF was
approved, I dont see any TIF on the hori-
zon beyond TIF 12, at least not in the near
term. So this would probably be our last TIF
for awhile unless something different
changed and theres a policy movement to
move forward in a different direction.

The Menomonee Falls Village Board
last week approved a settlement with one
of the remaining partners in the original
ownership group of the Radisson Hotel.
As part of a tax incremental finance
(TIF) district that included the Radisson
Hotel, in April 2010 the village provided a
$17.6 million loan to Lodging Investors of
Menomonee Falls, LLC, the ownership
group that was to construct and manage
the hotel. The ownership group defaulted
on the loan and the village is currently
owed approximately $14 million.
The hotel was placed into receivership
following a motion by the village of
Menomonee Falls in Waukesha County
Circuit Court that was granted in
November 2011.
On July 24, 2013, Waukesha County
Circuit Judge James Kieffer ruled in favor
of a summary judgment requested against
James Heyden, Constance L. OMara
Heyden and L.A.C. Concepts, the remain-
ing partners in the Lodging Investors
group. Heyden filed for bankruptcy in fed-
eral court later that day.
Under the settlement, which was
approved by the Village Board Sept. 2,
James Heyden agreed to pay the village
$100,000 by Aug. 15, 2019, with
$20,000 being due by Aug. 15 of each
year. Heyden agreed to dismiss a lawsuit
he filed against the Kinseth Hotel
Corporation and Seth Dizard, who is serv-
ing as the receiver for Lodging Investors.
The settlement is subject to the approval of
the bankruptcy court.Both the village and
the Heydens also agreed to waive a right
to trial by jury in any action related to the
agreement.
The agreement also includes language
stating "the Village Manager, the Village
Attorney, Heyden, LAC and O'Mara each
agree that they will not act in any way to
impugn the reputation of any of the Parties
or any of the Parties' agents or employees,
or communicate anything negative regard-
ing any one of the Parties or any of the
Parties' employees, and each will direct
their respective legal counsel not to do so.
The Village Manager, the Village Attorney,
Heyden, LAC and O'Mara each agree that
they will not make any disparaging, defam-
atory or untrue remarks to any third party
concerning the Village, Heyden, LAC,
O'Mara, this Agreement, the Lodging
Investors Action, the LACAction, the
Bankruptcy Case, the Adversary Case, the
Hotel, the Hotel Receiver, or the Van, and
each will direct their respective legal coun-
sel not to do so."
The motion by the Village Board to
approve the settlement follows on order
in Waukesha County Circuit Court Aug. 28
to have Dizard execute a letter of intent
and negotiate a purchase and sale agree-
ment for the Radisson Hotel. Any agree-
ment entered into by the receiver is subject
to approval by the Circuit Court. That court
has scheduled a hearing on any purchase
for Sept. 19.
Falls approves settlement with hotel partner
A public hearing will be held before the
Menomonee Falls Plan Commission Sept. 9
regarding several items related to a Kwik
Trip proposed near the northeast corner of
Main Street and Pilgrim Road.
The meeting will held at the Village Hall,
W156 N8580 Pilgrim Rd., beginning at
6:30 p.m.
Kwik Trip is proposing to construct a
5,700 square foot convenience store toward
the northeast corner of the site. In order for
the proposal to move forward, a conditional
use permit has to be granted for the business
and the land use components have to be
changed by the Village Board.
According to the village staff report, a
petition signed by 271 people opposed to
the gas station was submitted to village staff
prior to the Aug. 5 Plan Commission meet-
ing.
Also on the board agenda is a request
from Fairchild Equipment to obtain a condi-
tional use permit to allow outdoor storage of
finished produce at N52 W13821 North
Park Drive.
According to the staff report, Fairchild
Equipment sells new and used forklift equip-
ment and other related material handling
equipment and provides support for fleets in
Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and the
Michigan upper peninsula.
The staff report states the company
would like to create "a safe and fenced in
area" for limited forklift and attachment stor-
age.

Maybe its going back to school, maybe
its the shorter days or maybe its the blinding
lights signaling the holiday season ahead, but
fall home improvement projects often get
tossed aside or neglected in favor of more
exciting, interesting or pressing activities. This
short checklist will help guide you to the most
important elements to monitor and maintain in
your home, keeping you and your family safe
and maximizing the life of your home.
When the time changes, its time to check
the batteries in your smoke detectors. Making
sure they are still operational is quick and
easy and will bring peace of mind for anoth-
er six months. Similarly, every year, you
should check your fire extinguishers to ensure
that they have the proper pressure. Look for
dents and dings, and make sure the pin is in
the correct position. Fall is a great time to do
this, as youll be spending more time indoors.
If the pressure has fallen too low, find a pro-
fessional to recharge them for you.
Most people dont use their chimney in
the summer, and soot can build up over the
course of a year. Other debris like birds nests
or even leaves can create unsafe blockages.
Have your chimney inspected by a profes-
sional if you plan to use it through the winter.
Small animals will be looking for a warm
place to sleep, and your home is a great
option for them. Perform routine pest control in
your area, watching out for places where ani-

It may not be top of mind, but fall is
actually the ideal time to think about your
homes cooling system, says Frank

There are five reasons why consumers
who consider this important home upgrade
during the off-season often have much better
outcomes, say the experts at AC & Heating
Connect.
Contractor considerations: Give your-
self plenty of time to identify the best AC con-
tractor for your installation. Contractors in
between cooling and heating seasons will be
more available to help solve your specific
problems.
New features: Learn about the latest
technology and features available for HVAC
systems, as a lot has changed in the past 20
years. Consider systems with features ranging
from superior humidity reduction to noise
reduction to remote control systems and ener-
gy-efficient programmable thermostats.
Dual fuel heat pumps that can use either
electricity or natural gas for heating are
another recent innovation to consider.
Zombie heat pump: So-called zom-
bie heat pumps appear to be alive and run-
ning, but in reality are not performing opti-
mally, or at all. If your air conditioner dou-
bles as a heat pump, fall is the time to have
your system checked out for the heating sea-
son. Fall is also a good time to have a con-
ventional furnace checked out by a contrac-
tor. If its older like the AC unit, you might be
better off having them both replaced at once.

Finally, check the caulking around your
home. Caulk is a cheap compound that any-
one can apply, and it will reduce the amount
of energy loss from your home and prevent
water damage to flooring, walls and windows
in the kitchen and bathroom.
This is a big listand its certainly not com-
prehensivebut all of these things can be
accomplished in one weekend day. Spending
minimal time improving and protecting your
home for the winter season will provide great
returns.
Recalculations: Have your contractor
run new calculations on your home. Changes
since that old AC system was installed can
affect your needs. For example, if you added
insulation, upgraded to more efficient win-
dows, knocked out walls or added a room,
you might need a different system size than
before -- and the wrong system can be prob-
lematic.
A system thats too small wont keep up
on the hottest days. A system thats too large
will cycle too much, causing wide swings in
temperature -- and wont necessarily remove
all the humidity from your home.
Further, if you plan to close the AC vents
in seldom-used rooms, look for a system with
at least two steps of capacity modulation.
Closing room vents and doors effectively
makes your house appear smaller to your
HVAC system, which could significantly dam-
age the system or cause it to fail prematurely.
Regulations: Know the latest govern-
ment regulations and rebates before you buy.
New regulations going into effect January 1,
2015, might affect the minimum efficiency
standard in your region. Give yourself time to
consider whether you want to replace your
system ahead of the change.
Replacing HVAC systems in fall can be a
smart maneuver. By planning ahead, you can
make smarter choices for your home and
your comfort.

The Hamilton High School Charger
football team will conduct a food drive
Sept. 12 at the 7 p.m. Chargers vs.
Brookfield East Spartans varsity football
game to benefit the Sussex Outreach
Services (SOS) Food Pantry.

More than 550 Culver-Stockton stu-
dents, faculty and staff participated in the
sixth annual Extreme Dome Makeover,
Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, volunteering their
services to fix up 16 different sites in
Canton, Missouri.
Local students who participated in this
event include:
Bobby Nelessen, a junior sport man-
agement major of Menomonee Falls; and
Tony Nelessen, a junior individualized
major of Menomonee Falls.
Volunteers spent the day doing various
activities like painting, landscaping and
cleaning. Project sites included both public
areas and private residences. Public sites
included Canton Senior Housing, City Hall,
Martin Park, the Mississippi River Park, the
Canton Community Garden and more.
Extreme Dome Makeover provides the
opportunity to introduce incoming students
to the community of Canton, as well as to
their classmates, advisors and neighbors.
"We want our students to know that
being a servant leader is important.
Hopefully by the time they graduate they
will know that importance and they'll be
able to lead service projects in their own
community ," said Dean of Students Chris
Gill.
Culver-Stockton College, located in
Canton, Mo., is a four-year residential insti-
tution in affiliation with the Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ). C-SC specializes in
experiential education and is one of only
two colleges in the nation to offer the 12/3
semester calendar, where the typical 15
week semester is divided into two terms, a
12-week term and a 3-week term.

auditions for Toto in Wizard of
Oz
Skylight Music Theatre announces "So
You Think You Can Be Toto" Competition to
be held on Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. in the Cabot
Theatre at the Broadway Theater Center,

invites the public to attend this one of a kind
competition.
Skylight is seeking two well-trained,
small breed dogs (preferably Terriers or
Terrier mixes) to play Toto in the upcoming
production of The Wizard of Oz.
During the audition the candidates will
be asked to "perform" with an actress por-
traying Dorothy. The audition will include
loud music, a live audience and multiple
distractions to simulate the live theatre envi-
ronment. No previous acting experience is
required but a well trained dog with a
perky disposition is a plus.
Oz Historian and Film Critic, Ryan Jay
will join Skylight's artistic staff as a
Celebrity Guest Judge for the competition.
