EDITOR'S NOTE
Nurturing ourselves is a moment-by-moment daily activ-
ity. I was reminded of this recently, and the realization
was a powerful one. We may think that the occasional
massage appointment, regular yoga class, or healthy eat-
ing regimen is enough to truly nourish ourselves, but we
need more than that.
We could argue that we actually nurture ourselves (or
not!) with each and every thought that crosses our mind.
This months featured teacher profile, Jake Ferre, had
an a-ha moment during savasana related to the nature
of nurturing thoughts. Would I speak to a friend the
way I spoke to myself? Unfortunately, most of us dont
treat ourselves as kindly as we do others. Taking a mo-
ment or two to shift this experience is a necessary part
of enhancing our ability to nourish ourselves. Conversa-
tions set the tone for relationship. Approaching our own
hearts and minds with an attitude of friendship is like
wrapping ourselves in a warm blanket, or settling into a
soothing savasana.
One of the reasons we meditate is to shift the nature of
this conversation and have greater control over our own
internal attitudes. While we think a great deal about
what yoga teacher training entails, the internal practice
of yoga may be even more important. How we approach
the teaching of meditation is a valuable inquiry. As Lorin
Roche quotes the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra, Meditation
allows us to be led into the nourishing state of fullness.
This is why we practice.
This is also why we may enroll in a teacher training pro-
gram, to be led, one way or another, into the nourishing
state of fullness found in the sanctuary of practice. Since I
took my teacher training program in the early 1990s, the
options for studying to be a yoga teacher have grown ex-
ponentially. Julie Buckner explores some of the options in
this months feature story, while Karen Henry spent weeks
compiling information on programs for this issues guide.
Shiva Rea offers her perspecitve on practice through an
exploration of the season we are about to enter: the long
days of Summer when we experience both the gifts of
abundant sunshine, as well as the challenge of ensuring
we do not overheat or dehydrate. Her Ayurvedically-in-
spired suggestions provide a framework for us to survive,
thrive, and nurture ourselves throughout the Summer.
Through meditation, practice, training, and moment-to-
moment self-care, may we nurture ourselves well.
BE WELL

Your LA Yoga?
KIMBERLY SARACINO,

Yoga is not just about the
physical practice or being the
most exible. Although the
asanas are important, the prac-
tice is about immersing yourself
into a place where you can feel
genuine inner peace and love.
Yoga has given me a deep and
sincere appreciation of the little
things I used to take for granted.
I no longer let outside stressors
take control of the happiness I
feel for myself or others. I love
myself and can see the perfection
in where I am at in my life.

For me, yoga is an ongoing,
unfolding, unyielding experi-
ence. Its always showing me
something - something new,
real, true. Its transformative.
Nearly every encounter Ive
had with the practice, over the
course of almost 30 years, has
been an opportunity to move
my body, change my mind,
to shift my consciousness. Its
the transformational nature of
the practice its teachings, its

Stella Luna Yoga
CYPRESS
9191 Valley View St., Cypress.

Stella Luna Yoga has been offering yoga and other holistic healing
practices since 2013 in the city of Cypress, in Orange County. The
studio, whose name is a composite of the owners and her daughters
names, continues to evolve as an increasing number of offerings nd
their way on to the schedule. Stella Tryon, a dancer and yoga teacher,
says that after spending so much of her life inside studios, it felt per-
fectly natural to open her own. Her wish is to provide a wide variety
of services so that there is something for everybody.
On top of basic Hatha and ow classes, the schedule includes
Kundalini, chair yoga, Mommy and Me, and a handful of donation-
based classes each week. With two rooms, Stella Luna also has plenty
of space for trance dance events and teacher trainings. One of the
rooms, dubbed Lunas Lounge, is often converted from a studio space
into a mini-spa for massage, Reiki, or chakra readings. Stella, who
describes her studio as home-style and family-grown with a sophis-
ticated, elegant edge, has fostered an atmosphere where the teachers
are free to bring their individual modalities and specialties into the
shared space. For students, this means abundant opportunities to ex-
plore your practice.

Pure Barre
SANTA MONICA

Something of a purist when it comes to her tness routine, Marni
Rosenthal Chaikin co-owns the Brentwood and Woodland Hills Pure
Barre locations, and is especially excited to bring the method further
west by offering classes to Santa Monica residents, both new and
experienced. If you can hold a ballet barre, you can do Pure Barre,
says Marni.
Although the teachers and nuances of each class are unique, the se-
quence and structure of every Pure Barre class remains consistent.
Beginning with a cardio warm-up to raise the heart rate and prepare
the muscles, the class quickly moves through arm-strengthening exer-
cises and challenging core work. At the barre, small, localized move-
ments help to efciently work the quads and gluteal muscles without
any jarring or over-straining. Yoga-like stretches and deep breaths
conclude the class to elongate the muscles and complete the practice.
Pure Barre members can participate in monthly Breaking Down the
Barre workshops which explain the Pure Barre method. New mem-
bers can take advantage of a month of unlimited classes for $100.
By Kiara Kinghorn, who held her rst barre at age ve. She is now a ballet teacher
and editorial assistant for LA Yoga Magazine.

Bluewater Pilates has created quite a wave in my Instagram feed: pink
sandy beaches, positive afrmations and blissed-out yogis in beauti-
ful postures. Located in the South Bay directly across from the El
Segundo Plaza, this cozy studio with limited class sizes boasts a selec-
tion that includes Reformer classes, mat Pilates, Jumpboard classes,
Latin-dance inspired Zumba, Yoga for Surfers, and booty blast.
Immaculate wood oors and beach-inspired touches create a sooth-
ing sense of ease and remind you that you are mere blocks from the
ocean. One-on-one classes are available beginning at 6 am, and bring-
ing a friend guarantees a ten percent discount.
At Bluewater Pilates, I was greeted with huge smiles and contagious
enthusiasm, and teachers Libby Jansen and Chloe Moore ushered me
in to the immaculate studio where woven baskets lled with weights
and Pilates bands were available. Along with four other women, I took
booty blast, a vinyasa-inspired class with an emphasis on the assets.
Through the blasting and burning, Chloe kept us bumping to the beat
with enthusiasm. Sometimes we take our practice too seriously,
Chloe said over a throwback 90s tune. The world is so serious, give
yourself a break and enjoy this hour! I do take my practice so seriously
worrying about missing a day or not staying in a pose long enough.
The next thing I knew, I was in savasana. I left with a Bluewater buzz
and the promise to return the following Monday for Ab Lab.

Since January 2012, Yoga Vibe has been contributing to the happiness
of Los Feliz, as the neighborhood's go-to studio for vinyasa ow yoga.
Owners Larry and Amy Santiago are thrilled to announce that Yoga at
the Village in Glendale is now a part of the Yoga Vibe tribe.
Their vision for Yoga Vibe at the Village includes the continued cel-
ebration of the therapeutic yoga community cultivated by original stu-
dio owner, Elyse Briggs, while offering their signature vinyasa ow
vibe. Larry and Amy believe in creating a space where yoga is fun,
everyone is welcome, and the teachers and staff know your name.
The practice room is inviting, with a beautifully mounted rope wall
on one side, and antique windows on the other. Its like practicing
in the comfort of your own home with the benet of compassionate,
attentive teachers.
The diverse class schedule includes Candlelight Flow, Iyengar (rope
wall!), Mixed Level Flow, Therapeutics, Yin, and Yoga Tune Up.
Purchasing a class series gives you access to both locations, so kick off

GREEN
INVESTING
Want a cleaner, greener world? One way is to
live green. Another is to invest in clean energy
companies and divest yourself of oil, gas,
and dirty energy in your 401k, IRA, annuity,
pension, trust, or any other retirement plan
that you own.
Here are four tips on how to
green your portfolio:
1// Know What You Own
If you don't know the companies that are
held in the funds in your retirement ac-
counts, chances are very high that you own
oil, gas, cigarettes, GMOs, war, and other
products. Even so-called socially conscious
fund companies invest in these companies.
2// The Rewards Are Green, Too!
Over the past three years, the Hain Celestial
Group has seen its share price go up 154%,
triple the performance of Conagra Foods.
Google investors saw their investment
almost triple over the last ve years. British
Petroleum stock is at.
I like proting on organic food and the
democratization of the Internet, instead of
canned food and gasoline: A win-win.
3// Reduce Risk
Clean energy scored almost 60% gains in
2007 and was the worst performing industry
of 2008. To reduce risk in your nest egg,
avoid investing in individual companies, and
choose funds instead. Limit your investment
to 5-10% of your nest egg.
4// Co-Create a Cleaner,
Greener World
Our conscious creative community is living
and buying green. We promote bike-friendly
city policies, choose more fuel-efcient cars,
eat organic, recycle, and more. However,
the next evolution of green advocacy is to
align our investing dollars with our spending
dollars. Make 2014 our year to get money
smart and invest green.

As part of the Clean LA Solar initiative,
the wildly popular apparel store Forever
21 has committed to installing the na-
tions largest single rooftop solar power
system at their LA headquarters. Los An-
geles Mayor Eric Garcetti, and Forever 21
Founder/CEO Do Won Chang gathered to
ceremoniously install the rst panel at the
groundbreaking event.
Clean LA Solar is a revolutionary new en-
ergy program that supplies zero-carbon,
renewable energy to Los Angeles by tak-
ing advantage of the vast, underutilized
rooftop space in the area. Launched in
2013, Clean LA Solar will be the largest
urban rooftop solar program in the United
Statesand is already being hailed as a
model for the nation.
The fashion retailers 5.1 megawatt solar
power system, designed and built by Per-
maCity, makes Forever 21 the rst to take
advantage of both LADWPs Solar Photo-
voltaic Incentive Program and Feed-in Tariff
(FiT) Program on one site. The incentive
program compensates customers who pur-
chase and install their own systems; the FiT
program allows businesses and commer-
cial property-owners to generate energy
for the citys power grid through rooftop
solar panels, and sell the power back to
LADWP.
Currently, most of the citys renewable
power is generated outside the LA basin
and transmitted inefciently to custom-
ers. By contrast, the Clean LA Solar pro-
gram incentivizes clean-energy production
within city limits. The result will be more
efcient power delivery and a reduction in
the citys reliance on polluting, coal-red
power plants.
The impact of Forever 21s commit-
ment is signicant. PermaCity estimates
the system will help keep nearly 13 mil-
lion pounds of carbon dioxide out of
the air each year, which is the equiva-
lent of taking 1,200 cars off the road.
It also puts Los Angeles one giant step
closer to its goal of generating 33% of its
electricity from renewable sources by the
year 2020.

Any fan of rock and roll can easily make the association between the neighborhood of
Laurel Canyon in the Hollywood Hills with being a hotbed of hippie counterculture in
the 60s and 70sand significant culturallythe music produced there. Frank Zappa,
Captain Beefheart, CSN, Joni Mitchell, The Doors, and plenty of other Canyon-dwellers
lived, worked, and played in what became a legendary symbiosis of creativity and social
revolution.
The Grammy Museum, Downtown at LA LIVE, pays tribute to this phenomenon with
California Dreamin: The Sounds of Laurel Canyon, 1965-1977, on exhibit through
November 30, 2014. Grammy Museum Executive Director, Bob Santelli says, The re-
markably rich sounds of Laurel Canyon and the sheer number of songwriters, bands, pro-
ducers, artists, engineers, and record label people who have lived and worked out of Laurel
Canyon prove that Los Angeles is, and continues to be, a vital rock scene. We felt it was
important to tell that story, right here in our hometown.
Photographer Henry Diltz, was a significant force documenting of the scene, and the ex-
hibit features his work prominently, as well as the original photography of musician Gra-
ham Nash, and others. Also on display are rare artifacts, like Jim Morrisons writing chair,
Cass Elliots hand-painted chair, Pocos Richie Furays Nudie suit, original handwritten

TEACHER PROFILE // JAKE FERREE
e each make our journey to yoga in
our own way, and Jake Ferrees may
be one that is familiar to many of us. Brought
to his rst yoga class during a time in his life
when he was facing personal challenges, the
stillness of savasana delivered an a-ha mo-
ment: Jake noticed the negative, self-critical
nature of his thoughts.
I realized that I was speaking to myself in
a way that I would never speak to anyone
else. Then this simple thought came to me,
What would happen if you treated your-
self as a friend? That thought completely
changed my life and has been the biggest
gift of the practice.
When you rst walk into Jakes class, you
cant help but notice his muscular build, yet
his love of tness is more than just about
building muscleit includes the incorpora-
tion of spirituality and yoga. He has integrat-
ed multiple modalities, through his continu-
ing involvement in weight lifting, along with
personal training, yoga, breathwork, and Re-
connective Healing, a program developed by
chiropractor Dr. Eric Pearl.
Reective of his own experience, Jakes pri-
ority when teaching is to communicate that
in order to gain a deeply-rooted connection
to both body and practice, you must work
from the inside out. Because of yoga, Ive
experienced moments in my life where I am
able to see things more clearly and handle
situations in ways I wouldnt normally have
handled them. He feels this comes from the
basics of yoga practice, Once you establish
the connection to your breath, your perspec-
tive shifts, and you are able to see things more
clearly. Jake believes the most important
benet of yoga is the awareness that develops
as a result of the practicein all areas of life.
Even when someone is introduced to the phys-
ical aspects of the practice, the spiritual has a
way of sneaking its way into a persons life,
as Jake describes the phenomenon.
Jake gives an example of this in his own life,
I recently went snowboarding in Colorado
and found myself able to connect with the
breath as I was boarding. Once I did that, the
whole experience was enhanced. I was able
to take in everything that was happening all
around me and fully appreciate the moment.
I felt my movement connecting to my breath.
It was is if I were on my mat owing and con-
necting through a vinyasa sequence. Moments
like that just sort of happen and I am able to
notice them more and more.
The power of those moments wasnt neces-
sarily something Jake could have anticipated
while growing up in Reno, Nevada. But his
love of tness did begin when he was young
and the weight room was a place to let go of
negative emotions. The gym was an escape
for me, confessed Jake.
While in his early 20s, Jakes commitment to
tness led him to becoming a nationally cer-
tied personal trainer. He then owned and

operated Elite Training, a personal training
service that worked out of multiple gyms in
northern Nevada.
Ready for a change, he moved to Los An-
geles at the age of 25 and began working
as a personal trainer at Equinox. Not long
after, Jake made the decision to cross-train
in yoga simply to try something new. Let
me tell you, the rst time I took a yoga class
it kicked my butt, Jake said, I was used
to lifting weights, but I never actually spent
time stretching my muscles.
Although Jake struggled to nd a balance
between strength and exibility in his prac-
tice, he did not give up. In addition to his
usual resistance training routine, he commit-
ted to yoga by going to class twice a week
for a month. Not only did he become more
exible in his physical body, he also noted
positive changes in the way he viewed life in
general. Needless to say, Jake continued go-
ing to class even after his month-long com-
mitment was over.
In yoga, I had to confront my issues rather
than escape from them. Theres a payoff that
Jake found in this process, The beauty is that
you learn how to deal with hardships and it
helped me appreciate and learn to love my-
self. His growing appreciation for yoga led
to attending teacher training; he completed
the YogaWorks program in 2007 while living
for a stint in New York City. His love for LA
pulled him back to the West Coast, and his
return came with a commitment to teach.
Jakes strong tness background initially in-
uenced the way he taught. With time and
further practice, Jake transitioned from a
strictly physical method of teaching to one
that incorporates both mind and body. For
him, it is very important to get people to no-
tice what is happening on a deeper level versus
what is happening within the physical pose.
The poses are wonderful and needed, states
Jake, But what else is happening beyond
that? Thats the essence I want to hit in my
classes. While Jake has taught at a number of
locations throughout LA, he currently teaches
at Aura Yoga on Sunset in West Hollywood,
where he helps run the yoga department.
Jake assisted in the development of the color
scheme for the studios specialized lighting
system, one of the hallmarks of Aura Yoga.
The lighting was implemented to create
themed ambiance during practice connect-
ing to themes and ideas such as the chakra
system or the elements of nature. Linking
specic themes to colors complements classes
taught by Jake and other teachers at the stu-
dio allowing students to connect with their
senses and surroundings, facilitating the
work from the inside out. For example, ll-
ing the studio with blue light emphasizes the
water elements owing through life or the
uidity through practice.
We have all been hard on ourselves at some
point in our lifetime. When the idea of who
we think we should be outweighs who we
really are, we form unrealistic expectations
which can cause suffering. Jakes emphasis
on the practice of treating oneself as a friend,
for example, is one way we can appreciate
that we are capable of anything and that t-
ness is not only what we can lift physically,
but how we can uplift ourselves mentally or
emotionally. Through yoga, Jake summarizes,
I am more aware of my movements, my ac-
tions, my words. I am more aware of whats
happening around me. I am able to see things
more clearly.

CROSS TRAINING // HOOPI NG
BY NADI NE TRUONG
here was a time when the hula hoop
was simply a plastic toy. For decades,
since its invention in 1958, the large
twirling ring-around-the-waist was a fun,
simple, and carefree activity; a hobby kids
could revel in and adults could laugh about.
In recent years, however, hooping has blos-
somed into something much more power-
ful. It has become a form of meditationa
spiritual practiceone that empowers, heals,
saves lives, creates peace, and cultivates men-
tal and physical balance in its practitioners.
The Hooping Life, a documentary by lm-
maker Amy Goldstein and produced by
Anouchka Van Riel, examines the impact this
playful tness device has had on culture and
society. With the keen eye of an anthro-
pologist, Goldstein dives deep into the
lives of eight hoopers and over the
course of nearly 10 years, docu-
ments their paths and careers.

We learn that hoops are not simply toys,
but effective tools to look inward and heal.
Anah, aka Hoopalicious, is a young wom-
an who is a signicant pioneer in the modern
hooping movement in California. Goldstein
introduces Anahs narrative as a way to con-
nect the hoop to universal concepts we can
each connect with. We all love, hurt, yearn,
and chase our dreams. As Anahs story un-
folds, it is revealed that she has led a life lled
with trials and tribulations. She is a woman
who has walked right up to the edge of death
and was ultimately saved by the hula hoop.
Goldstein does a compelling and respectful
job of exploring Anahs struggles on her road
to success.
When Goldstein met Anah through mutual
friends, she knew she had stumbled upon
someone special: an innovator. In Anah,
Goldstein also found a worthy and willing
collaborator,who pointed her toward seven
more extraordinary individuals of the hoop
movement: Baxter, a formerly-suicidal young
man, who hooped himself out of depression;
Christable, an academic in deep debt who
becomes Anahs business partner; Jeffrey,
an at-risk teen orphan from South Central
Los Angeles, who turns to hoopingwith
the help of his hooping mentor Tishaas a
way to stay out of trouble and away from
gang life; Karis, a skilled hoop dancer, who
loves to play with gender identities during his
soulfully dazzling performances; and Sass, a
South African actress on a quest to heal her
emotional wounds after having been brutally
raped in her home country.
The Hooping Life provides an irresistible
glimpse into the lives of these eight trailblaz-
ers. Observing the anatomy of a subculture
that has not yet been documented in this way,
one cant help but notice many similarities to
the practice of yoga. Rushing up and down
the torso and limbs, the hoop energizes the
chakra centers the way yoga asana practice
can also do. The discipline calls for focus on
the present moment. Hooping demands that
the practitioner let go and move in a way that
aligns the internal and external worlds. Hoop-
ing requires us to surrender to the natural
cycles of beginning and end, birth and com-
pletion. Theres a nite number of rotations
a hoop will make.and that's okay, because
once the hoop falls, it only asks to be picked
up again to continue its dance.

round the world, celebrations are
synched with the Summer Solstice,
June 21, the peak of the light, the longest day
of the year. Around the world, sites are built
in alignment with the Summer Solstice with
their architecture aligned with the cosmos:
the Great Pyramids in Egypt, Stonehenge in
England, Callenish in Scotland, Newgrange in
Ireland, Macchu Picchu in Peru, Ajanta Caves
in India, Chaco Canyon in New Mexico, the
serpentine burial mounds in Ohio, and the
California Chumashs hidden cave paintings.
During this Solstice, the Sun is at its peak in
the Northern Hemisphere, reecting the peak
of fruits and fertility of the Earth. In Ayurve-
da, rtucharya describes the cycle of the seasons
through the year. The word is based upon the
root rtu from the Vedic rtam, meaning cos-
mic rhythm. The Summer Solstice marks the
peak of the uttarayana, the six-month period
that begins with the Winter Solstice. The plant
world grows from seed to fullness with the
waxing light of the Sun, which strengthens
and intensies until the Summer Solstice.

Summer Solstice Sacred
Retreat Natural Light
The outdoor festival season is ancient and is
initiated by the tradition of lighting bonres at
the Solstice. Harnessing natural lightsolar
poweris an essential component of the sea-

from Ayurvedic rtucharya and giving space to
Summer in your home can align you with the

mic light.
Aligning with the Solstice
Create your home altar with the colors of the
sun: choose brilliant golds, reds, and orang-
es in fabrics, fruit, and candles. Adorn your
body with the Suns colors to bring brightness
and radiance into your being.
In a journal or in meditation, reect on your
journey over the past six months. Remember
the intentions you planted at Winter Solstice.
What has transpired for you in this rst half
of the journey around the Sun?
Place a jar or bowl lled with water in the Sun
to be energized by the Solstice rays. Drink it
in the afternoon to receive the vital energy of
the Sun. Place any gold jewelry you may have
near a window to be recharged and blessed by
the Solstice Sun.
The many music festivals around the Summer
Solstice period, from Glastonbury to Wander-
lust, awaken the ancestral memory of all-night
celebrations where there is little darkness as
the Sun sets late and rises early. Evoke this
energy by nding a place in the urban envi-
ronment (or outside it) where you can create a
bonre or simply enjoy a great outdoor party,
with re represented in torches. Enjoy the col-
lective celebration with your whole being on
this holy day of the peak of light.
Balancing the FireSummer
Ayurveda Rtucharya
Summer initiates a time when the earth is
most dry and arid, receiving maximum solar
energy. All the radiant light is activating but
depleting, and so our digestive re is also at
its weakest.
Ayurveda considers Summer a pitta season,
with emphasis on the elements of re with just
a bit of water. Pitta dosha is a radiant solar
force, hot and sharp, and at this time of the
year it is important to balance pitta because
we can easily become dehydrated.
The gunas, or qualities, of summer that we
seek to balance are:
> Hot and sharpbalanced with relaxation.
> Oily and liquidbalanced with things that
are dry but nourishing. >>

Five Anchors for the
Summer Season
In summer, when your gaze dissolves in the
endlessly clear sky, penetrate this light that
is the essence of your own mind. Vijnana
Bhairava Tantra
> Balance the excess re that over-stimulates
the pitta dosha by staying relaxed, calm,
and cool, and tending ery emotions like
impatience and irritation.
> Shift your rhythm from manifestation to
celebration. Take time to slow down; enjoy
life outdoors, but avoid activities that are
overly exerting between 11am and 3pm. Stay
cool and indoors or in the shade during
these hours of peak sunlight.
> Enjoy sleeping outside to breathe the fresh
air and absorb moonlight, or stay up moon
bathing: Sit outside under the moonlight
and absorb the watery, cooling nectar from
the moon.
> Focus Summer body care on cooling the
skin with calming and soothing practices
(see Body Rhythm).
> Eat and drink to balance the pitta dosha
enjoying cooling fruits and vegetables in
season (see Food Rhythm) and sipping on
warm water or herbal waterto maintain
and regulate body temperature.
Food Rhythm
Due to the strong properties of the Sun and
the bodys need to stay cool and release inter-
nal heat, our inner re, agni, is pulled to the
extremities to keep the body cool; therefore
digestive agni is compromised, weakening our
digestive capacity. That is why in the Summer
we are often less hungry and want to eat less.
So it is recommended in Ayurveda to eat light-
er and smaller meals during this time of year.
Suggestions to balance pitta include:
> Drink a brew of cumin, coriander, fennel,
and rose or mint tea to pacify the heat, im-
prove digestion, and calm the mind.
> Increase sweet, bitter, and astringent foods
that are light in nature; eat plenty of bitter
salad greens such as lettuce, arugula, radic-
chio, basil, and endive.
> Favor: coconut water, watermelon, cilantro
leafy greens, okra, zucchini, asparagus, olive
oil, sunower oil, coconut oil, ghee, cucum-
ber, soaked/peeled almonds, kale, broccoli,
pomegranate, apples, cranberry, mint, dill,
fennel, cardamom, coriander, and saffron.
> Include cool drinks and raw foods in your
diet, such as cucumber, mango, and coco-
nut water; natural fruit juices, mint teas,
and raw berries are also good choices.
> Reduce sour, salty, and pungent tastes. >>

> Give yourself a slow and loving full-body
massage before taking a shower. Use pitta
massage oil, coconut oil, or sunower oil.
Pitta season can create conditions for i
ammation and over-activity of certain
metabolic processes and secretions. Mas-
sage helps things move through the body
and can be soothing.
> A rosewater mister is a wonderful refresher
for the face and body, as are a cooling
milk and mint bath, or milk with rose pet-
als. Make a sandalwood face mask with
rose water. Have fresh aloe nearby for any
pitta skin conditions that may arise, from
sunburns to rashes.
> Summer essential oils / scents include: san-
dalwood, rose, lavender, jasmine, lotus,
gardenia, khus, and vetiver.
> While we may choose to wear the colors
of the Sun to honor and enhance the energy
of this time of year, when we notice the re
increasing beyond a level that is comfortable
and we need to cool the body, we are served
by cooling hues of white, blue, or green. No
matter what color we wear, light textures of
cotton, linen, or silk allow us to move easily
throughout the season.
Energetic Vinyasa for
the Summer Season
KalaContinue to synch with the Sun, grad-
ually getting up earlier before the sunrise; this
is the peak time of growth, so synch your
movements with that waxing light. Offer yoga
outdoors in the shade so you can take in the
fresh prana of the elements at this time.
DesaIf you are already experiencing the
heat of Summer, be aware of the effects of
Summer on excessive re in your body. Begin
to wear more cooling colors and white to stay
in the bhava of Summer.
BhavaBask in the Summer joy but be
aware that the Sun has reached its peak in
the Northern Hemisphere and has begun its
journey of waning for the next six months.
The relaxing, easygoing quality of a more lu-
nar, uid nature can be integrated into the
expansiveness of summer qualitiescelebra-
tory, sukha (intrinsic happiness), loving ap-
preciation of the best of life, and the ease you
feel in your body.
DoshaThe Summer Season is time when
those who did not cleanse fully in the Spring
are most vulnerable to experiencing accumu-
lated ama, or toxins, which can burn im-
purely during the excess heat-related imbal-
ances of Summer. Summer yoga practices and
a proper clean-food sadhana can, with some
mild cleanses, help you feel more balanced
and clear in the prana ow of your body,
which is the most open during the Summer.
Yoga PracticeThis is the best time of the
year for Sringara Rasa, practices to nourish
the water element to balance excess heat as
well as to tend the res of love and appre-
ciation. Cultivate lunar or Shanti Rasa prac-
tices as well if you are feeling the blissful lazy
quality of a natural shift into ida nadi or the
lunar current. This is the best season for ex-
ibility and ease of range of motion, which
can be enjoyed in uid backbends, namas-
kars to increase ow and agility, and Srin-
gara Rasa circular movements for increasing
the love ow.
> Enjoy stimulating cooling practices at this
time: sitali (hissing breath), slow and deep
ujjayi pranayama, and nadi shodhana.
> Asanas that remove excess heat from the
body, such as forward bends and mild
backbends, are most suitable. Avoid asanas
that build heat. Do cooling pranayama
such as sheetali, sheetkari, chandra bed-
hana, and nadi shodhana.
> Enjoy solar mantras at sunrise such as the
Gayatri mantra or the simple Om Suraye
Namaha to align with solar energy.
Allow the Summer Solstice to penetrate your
awareness of how extraordinary our journey
on Spaceship Earth as we begin the second
half of the year.
One of three hundred billion stars
of the Milky Way galaxy, the Sun
each and every second transforms
four million tons of itself into light
and emits energy that we receive
some ninety-three million miles
awaya continuous process of
creation/dissolution.
Through the magnicence of solar
power, and the process of photo-
synthesis, we are given the air to
breathe, food to eat, and water to
drink. Sunlight is indeed the divine
source of prana. We are literally
made of the Sun, our great star.
We live in an abundance of energy.
The Suns radiant energy produces
six thousand times the amount of
energy used by all human beings
worldwide, and it would take only
0.001 percent of its energy to
power all of the world's current
energy needs for a day. One hour
of the Sun is enough for a whole
year of power.
Consider solar power to balance

The Nature of
Being Human
Judith Hanson Lasater explains how
restorative yoga, and understanding
your own human-ness creates
the perfect atmosphere for healing.
BY RI TA TRi eGER
YOGA THERAPY
When I began my career as a yoga teacher
many years ago, most of my classes were
on the vigorous side: lots of vinyasa, arm
balancing, wheels, and upside down things.
Then I began to teach classes at a hospital
and I soon realized that just about every-
thing I was used to teaching needed to be
modified or eliminated.
Around the time when I was quickly running
out of class ideas, I received a beautiful gift
from the Universean opportunity to study
with world-renowned teacher and author
Judith Hanson Lasater. Her innovative Re-
lax and Renew Teacher Training changed
my perspective as a teacher and as a human
being and because of what I learned, I be-
came much better at both.
This year, Judith is one of the keynote speak-
ers at the International Association of Yoga
Therapists June, 2014, Symposium on Yoga
Therapy and Research (SYTAR) in Austin,
Texas, and I was thrilled to have the oppor-
tunity to reconnect with the teacher who has
so positively influenced me.

One of the first questions I asked Judith related
to yogas growth within the medical commu-
nity. Recognition and acceptance of yoga by
medical professionals, and a growing aware-
ness of stress as a major catalyst for disease has
made yoga a valuable part of the healing pro-
cess, notes Judith. Over the years, Judith has
been involved in a number of studies involving
restorative yoga. The results have always been
overwhelmingly positive: Restorative yoga can
help reduce many of the physiological effects
of stress, including regulating high blood pres-
sure. Simply put, setting aside small modules
of time each day allows the intrinsic wisdom of
the body to function naturally.
"It's physically impossible to be relaxed and
anxious at the same time. Being able to con-
sciously rest takes the body out of fight-or-
flight mode and triggers the parasympathetic
nervous system or relaxation response, allow-
ing the bodys natural ability to heal to kick
in. When we teach restorative, how many
times do people come up to you afterward
and say, Thank you so much, you made me
feel so good,? asked Judith.
"Its really so rewarding, but we know that all
we did was make sure they were comfortable
and well-supported, and then we shut up and
let them rest! We don't have any magic pose
that addresses specifically what each student
needs we just give them the space to rest so
that the bodys healing instincts can take over.
I wanted to know if there were any particular
practices Judith incorporated into her daily
life. You mean besides resting for 20 min-
utes each day? she answered. I realize that
everything I say and dothe residue of all
my actionsaffects the world. Being aware
of that helps me to live more authentically. I
understand that what I do matters.
Judith shared one more important daily man-
tra with me. One that I have begun to use
every day since we had our conversation.
When I make mistakes or forget something
like a friends birthday, instead of berating
myself, I stop and say, How human of me
that I forgot my friends birthday. Reminding
myself that I am a work-in-progress allows me
to let go of those things I cant do anything
about and move on."
Great advice from a great teacher.

ow, you can receive your yoga edu-
cation in just 200 hoursat the gym,
in a hotel conference room, during a luxury
retreat in paradise, or even take portions of
it online.
Twenty-ve years ago, the teacher training
landscape in Los Angeles was centered around
three Westside studios: YogaWorks (then
a single space on Montana Avenue), Santa
Monica Yoga, and Center for Yoga on Larch-
mont (later bought by YogaWorks). Trainings
were led by a small sampling of master teach-
ers; there were no set curriculum standards,
no specic criteria for certication. Teachers
disseminated the teachings of their teachers
to their students, who in turn became teach-
ers themselves. In all likelihood, nearly every
yoga practitioner in LA today has been either
taught or somehow touched by this lineage.
In 1999, Yoga Alliance was founded by a
group of yogis from different lineages and tra-
ditions to develop a registry that recognized
yoga schools and teachers whose training met
the minimum curriculum standards that YA
designed. The curricula for both the 200-hour
and 500-hour teacher trainings includes asana
practice, anatomy and physiology, teaching
techniques and methods, practice teaching,
philosophy, ethics, and the business of yoga.
The 500-hour certication is met by taking
an advanced 300-hour TT in addition to the
basic 200.
Los Angeles is now a hotbed of yoga teacher
training, with nearly 130 Registered Yoga
Schools (RYSs) in the ve-county LA region;
the area is home to over 1,000 Registered
Yoga Teachers (RYTs), according to Yoga Al-
liances President Richard Karpel. (He notes,
however, there may be more schools and
teachers operating without registry.)
For students interested in 200-hour TT, there
are numerous options. One is the Weekends
format. Usually led by two to three trainers,
classes meet for 12 weekends. Groups range
in size from 8 to 40; the average cost in LA is
$2,850. Modular trainings are another varia-
tion of this, where students can register for in-
dividual weekend modules that together make
up a full program. This allows trainees to move
through a program at their own pace and work
around their schedules and budgets. The coun-
trys largest training outt (YogaFit) offers its
program in modules students can accumulate
required hours by weaving together multiple
evening sessions, day-long seminars, and week-
end workshops, from $199-$1,000. Another
option are intensives and residential intensives.
Between two and six weeks long; classes meet
every day, up to eight or nine hours per day.
Intensives are slightly more expensive, about
$3,200 on average and usually led by big
name, high-prole teachers. Residential train-
ings at centers such as the Sivananda Ashrams
or White Lotus allow for an immersion ex-
perience with shared meals and meditations.
Destination trainings are increasingly popular
too, and offer another experience: part teacher
training, part vacation. Theyre often held at
exotic resorts with dining, housing, spa, and
other activities (such as surng, kayaking, na-
tive drumming, re dancing, et cetera) included
in the package, for about $5,000-$6,000, plus
travel expenses.
Most schools offer payment plans; some pro-
vide scholarships. Some studios divide their
trainings into two parts, taken and priced
separately; the rst module or level is for stu-
dents who wish to deepen their practice while
students who want to be credentialed continue
with the second part for teacher training.
Because of YAs standards and strong compe-
tition among schools, 200-hour teacher train-
ings in LA are fairly similar: theyre tightly
structured, many have similar schedules and
syllabi yet reect the culture of the teacher or
studio.
Just as there are countless ways to practice
yoga and myriad options for training, students
come to TT for different reasons. Some want
to be teachers (full-time, part-time), others
dont. Many students train so that they can
add yoga techniques to their existing profes-
sional portfolios; this is the case for personal
trainers, bodyworkers, caregivers, therapists,
and teachers in other disciplines. Trainings are
Throughout most of yogas 5,000-

Other students come to training more circu-
itously, often as an organic development of
their personal practice. Yet, even with diverse
backgrounds, ages, and body types, students
stories share a remarkably common theme:
people in TT nd themselves at crossroads,
when it is time for change. I think people
decide to go to teacher training when some-
thing critical is happening in their lives, says
Rosanna Tavarez, RYT 200. For me, it was
a perfect stormI was separating from my
husband, deciding to leave my career in televi-
sionI was facing a new life.
Musician Kevin Hastings, son of an evan-
gelical minister and new to yoga, was touring
with Rhianna in 2012. I was drained and de-
pressed. I decided to pull myself off the road,
Kevin shared.,I felt a disconnect in my life. I
was missing a daily spiritual practice (albeit a
different one that had been part of my child-
hood), and found yoga and a home studio.
After practicing for about 18 months, Kevin
enrolled in teacher training. The decision, he
explained, was a call and response experi-
ence between me and my universe. I posed
the question to the universe, Whats the next
phase for me? What do you want from me?
Businesswoman and mom, Dixie Davis, re-
cently completed her 200 hour TT. Her only
previous experience with yoga was Kundalini,
many years ago. Feeling out of shape and
wanting to do something for herself, Dixie
decided to join only 24 hours before her pro-
gram with rigorous asana began. I had no
doubtbut when I got in there and people
were younger and more advanced. I didnt
have a practice. I thought Im 53, and Im
just starting.
A yoga practitioner on and off for 10 years,
Susanna Lee, also recently graduated from
TT. She moved to SoCal from the Midwest
to pursue her career as a comedian; she also
dances in nightclubs. Since moving to LA in
2011, I haven't been able to nd a job to sup-
plement my comedians income that doesn't
involve a pole, she said. Ive always toyed
with the dream of becoming a yoga teacher,
but it felt like taking TT was accepting a back-
up plan, thus conceding that Id never make
it as a comic. She felt conicted about the
program, but decided to go for it because
the desire to not die in stripper shoes was
stronger.
A mother of a yoga student recently inquired
about TT on her daughters behalf; she didnt
care about the quality or cost, but thought it
might be a good idea for her daughter to take
the summer after graduating from law school
this month to do TT. She thought it might >>

help pad and pop her resume for a job at
a law rm this Fall. Another student, a tness
trainer, who said she applied for training be-
cause she wanted to nail arm balancing later
admitted shed practiced yoga only ve or six
times in her life; she spent 12 weeks working to
simply straighten her arms in downward dog.
Most 200 hour programs today are accessible
to students who are new to yoga, with fewer
than ve years experience on the mat. Most
trainers agree that YAs standards provide the
outline for a good basic training, says long-
time teacher and trainer, Sigrid Matthews. The
200 is an overview of yoga says Rosanna.
Veteran teacher Scott Lewicki, who has stud-
ied extensively in a variety of asana systems, as
well as in anatomy, philosophy and literature,
calls the 200 a survey.
Others say thats not enough. The stan-
dard that [YA] set for yoga teacher training
is nowhere near adequate in preparing stu-
dents to teach yoga publicly, wrote seasoned
trainer James Brown in a January blog post
blasting Yoga Alliances new efforts to boost
credentialing.
Therefore, many believe that the 200 hour
is more about your own practice. Sara
Feuhrer, E-RYT 500 says, For so many
people, its about going a little deeper into
yogafor the rst time. Thus, some trainers
feel there should be a higher threshold for en-
try; some programs require one, two, or more
years of yoga experience, while others have
no restrictions. There should be a period
of time that you have a practice under your
belt before you start a 200, Sara believes.
Longtime instructor and sought-after trainer
Jeanne Heileman says it more strongly. We
should not be taking people into our trainings
who cant sustain downward facing dogbe-
cause we know that they wont be safe in in-
versions later on, she said. It holds the rest
of the group backbecause trainers end up
ghting res rather than deepening the expe-
rience for those who are ready.
Ready or not, LA trainers expressed a pro-
found sense of responsibility, not only to
their trainees but to the class-taking public,
the future students of these new yoga teach-
ers. There are very specic things that have
to be passed down, said Sigrid. We have to
teach them the most basic things, the basic
rules of alignment for Trikonasana. Students
just have to know how to do that.

LAYOGA. COM 41
Yet, as students will tell you, they get a whole
lot more out of TT than triangle pose.
Chrissie Endler, who recently completed her
second TT (her rst 200-hour focused on
yoga philosophy and Ayurveda, with very
little asana instruction), learned how to take
care of herself in practice. I don't want
to get caught in a Vinyasa somewhere and
have my knee explode. I have the knowledge
now that can allow me to heal myself, said
Chrissie. New teacher Erin Hoein said, the
most valuable thing I got was understand-
ing myself and my body. You come face to
face with your habits. You are able to make
the choice to make a changeor not, Erin
added. Dixie said, I nally stepped into who
I am and accepted myself. Im not a size six
and the irony is that I lost 12 pounds in TT,
she joked. And Kevin said, I found clar-
ity and comfort with myself in my world. I
feel clearer in the way that I look through
my eyes. Dixie added, What was most
meaningful and important to me is I got my
power. Ive always thought about it, Ive con-
templated it, but I never felt it before. Ive
always thought that once I could accept my
power, I could change my world, she said.
Still, teacher training can be intimidating.
You always think youre going to be sur-
rounded by a bunch of small, thin, young
women, said Dixie. I wanted to hide. But
theres nowhere to hide when youre doing
yoga. There were several times I left the class-
room and went into the bathroom and cried.
Everyone cries at least once during teacher
training, Rosanna recalls, with a knowing
smile. Everyone has at least one breakdown
along the way.
Teacher training is a commitment and takes
a sense of readiness, openness, for the entire
unfolding, Rosanna says. And youd better
be ready, because the process opens you up in
ways you dont expect.
While the benets of training may be as pro-
found as the practice itself, most trainers and
graduates feel that the 200 doesnt truly pre-
pare people to teach. Scott remembers that his
rst training left him feeling like I needed
more; I wasnt ready to authentically embody
my own voice as a teacher.
The world, by natural selection, will tell you
whether youre ready. If youre not ready, no
one will show up for your classes, and [teach-
ing] is not going to be a happy experience,
says Sara. The 200 doesnt really teach us
how to be teachers thats why theres a mar-
ket for 500.
The 500 hour is not for your practice, says
practitioner, teacher and trainer, Patty Pierce,
Its for you to be a better teacher.
Compared to the 200 hour, the 500 allows for
teachers to work more independently, de-
veloping and rening their individual inter-
ests, skills and voice, says Sarah Ezrin, who
teaches public classes and trains 200 hour
TTs. In contrast to the 200s set standards,
500 hour programs ideally allow more free-
dom and specialization, helping teachers to
develop their voices, their authenticity and
their uniqueness, says Sigrid.

After about ve years of teaching, Rosanna
intends to complete her 500 hours next year.
Im seeking renementdifferent ways of
articulating instruction, feedback on my se-
quencing, she explains. Most importantly, I
want a strong philosophical component.
When push comes to shove, the most im-
portant thing is for teachers to develop their
uniqueness, insists Sigrid. As trainers at the
500-hour level, we should be pushing students
to answer questions for themselves. Who are
you? Whats your bhav? Whats your vision
for yourself as a teacher?
Jeanne Heilemann likens yoga teacher training
to other higher educational endeavors. The
200 hour is a BA. The 500 is a Masters, she
says. Anything after that is a PhD.
Teaching cant be given to you; you have to
own it, Sigrid says, somewhat admonish-
ingly. She adds, Just because a teacher can-
not pop up into a handstand in the middle of
the room doesnt mean they cant be a great
teacher. The opposite is also true: it doesnt
mean if you can pop up into handstand, that
you can actually teach. Ultimately, says Pat-
ty, These teachers need to be able to go out,
step into the room, and not hurt anyone.
Experience and working with a strong men-
tor, who has experience teaching and training
teachers, is an important part of this process.
Despite insiders' controversies and criticisms
of teacher trainings, almost universally ev-
eryone who goes through a TTwhether
the goal is to become a teacher or a more
learned studentsays it is one of the best
things they've ever done for themselves.
Whether one is ready (or not), everyone gets
something out of it. Because, as Sarah says,
teacher trainings are transformative for so
many people on so many levels, she be-
lieves that all interested students, even yoga
newbies, should be welcome and encouraged
to do it. Life is short. Im a rm believer in
saying yes to everything.
In the weeks since her training ended, Dixie
recounts, Teacher training was hardbut
it was right for me. It made me stronger. Im
feeling it in all aspects of my life, she said.
Itll be part of my life, for the rest of my life.
Recent grad Susanna said, For the 12 weeks
of the 200 hour training, I felt productive,
intellectually and emotionally stimulated,
valued, and safe. Shes considering a 500,
she says, because I wouldn't pass up the
chance to continue my education in that en-
vironment.
For many, the experience of TT also provides
a sense of continued community. We cre-
ated this space together by learning to let go
of blockages, emotions, and thought patterns
that dont serve us anymore, says ongoing
student and non-teacher, Melanie Wagor.
Being immersed in community of like-mined
people focused on bettering themselves and
their lives is powerful. Deepening these rela-
tionships with teachers and fellow students is
a major part of my practice today, she added.
Kevin says, Im left with an overwhelming
sense of gratitude for the teachers/mentors
and the other 19 people in the group who
over the course of 12 weeks led me to say,
Im a yoga teacher.
So, to folks still sitting on the TT fence, Kev-
in feels compelled to say, Forget the fears
and what-ifs something is bound to hap-
pen. And concluded, Id be a fool not to
have gone.
When push
comes to shove,
the most important
thing is for
teachers to develop
their uniqueness

They say there is no such thing as a coinci-
dence. I believe it. I have been a big fan of LP
for years, as I have watched her explode on
the LA music scene. Her ability to command
a room through her powerful performance
and incredibly beautiful voice will leave
you speechless. I have always wanted to in-
terview her, especially when I found out she is
a big fan of yoga. With her new album, For-
ever For Now, coming out June 3 on War-
ner Brothers Records, now felt like the per-
fect time. I spoke with her manager, who is
a close friend, to see if there was anyway I
could spend a few minutes with her, or may-
be share a yoga class. Since we both have
crazy schedules, I figured it would be next to
impossible to set something up...and then two
days later a coincidence happened. As I
was about to begin my morning yoga class
with one of my favorite teachers, Joan Hy-
man, I turned around and guess who was lit-
erally right next to me in class? You guessed
it, LP!! We quickly laughed about the crazy
twist of fate that had us side-by-side on our
mats that morning. You learn a lot about
someone through their yoga practice. What I
learned about LP that day was that she is in-
credibly strong with a powerful, yet peaceful,
presence. I was definitely impressed and in-
spired by her practice, just as I am by her mu-
sic. With her powerful and unique voice, she
has been described as a cross between Jeff
Buckley, Florence & the Machine, and Janis
Joplin with a style and sound all her own. She
is equally gifted as a songwriter and has writ-
ten songs for artists like: Christina Aguilera
and Rihanna (including the song Cheers,
which I worked at Island Def Jam Music
Group. It was a big hit!).
When it comes to her health and fitness rou-
tine, we have a lot in common. Our favorite
exercise activities are yoga and hiking. De-
pending on her schedule, LP tries to practice
yoga three to six days a week and hike at
least twice. When she is traveling, she takes
her yoga mat on the road and streams the
class from her favorite teachers...or hits local
studios. The yoga pose she enjoys the most

is triangle (same as me) because it doesn't take
a lot of effort and you feel the benefits through-
out your body. Its also good for working tight
hamstrings. In addition, we have similar eat-
ing habits which are basically vegan with oc-
casional fish, eggs, and cheese (as I like to call
it a veg-aquarium). Her daily dietary supple-
ment is Green Vibrance which she calls her
back up nutrition, ensuring she gets all the
greens and probiotics she needs. According to
LP, If you are on this earth you have to take
care of yourself; you want your life to be the
best it can possibly be. We all benefit when

According to The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods by Michael Murray, gs are naturally rich
in potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and manganese; four to ve gs contain
just about 150 calories. Because of their high potassium content, they are considered help-
ful for regulating blood pressure. Additionally, they are among the most highly alkaline
foods so they help support the bodys pH balance. Author Paul Pitchford discusses this in
his book, Healing with Whole FoodsAsian Traditions and Modern Nutrition, where he
states that gs balance acidic conditions resulting from a diet rich in meat and rened foods.
Further, as a toxin neutralizer, gs facilitate healing and ease seasonal transitions, such as
the current transition to summer.
Figs originally came to California via southern Europe and the Middle East by way of the
Spanish missionaries, hence the commonly found Mission g with purplish-black skin
and pink esh. More than 100 varieties exist, ranging in size and color from the larger
Calimyrna with greenish-yellow skin and amber esh to the smaller Adriatic with light
green skin and pink esh, and the Brown Turkey with purple skin and red esh. Note that
the chewy skin, delicate esh, and crunchy seeds are all edible, so just eat the whole thing
(except the stem, of course).
While fresh figs are just fantastic on their own, consider:
> Slathering them with almond butter for a simple breakfast.
> Finely chopping and then rolling them into a gluten-free tortilla, slicing it crosswise, and
baking until gs begin to melt and tortilla becomes brown and crunchy.
> Simply scattering them around a cheese plate with almonds and walnuts.
> Slicing them in half and drizzling with balsamic and grated Manchego cheese (a Spanish
sheep's milk cheese) in this Spanish take on what I think of as a baked cheese plate.

Manchego Baked Figs
Prep & Cook Time: 15 minutes
Yield: 8 servings
1 pint fresh gs - green Adriatic, black Mission gs, or a combination
1 or 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar* (good qualityaged in wood barrels at least
four years or labeled balsamic vinegar of Modena)
Fresh black pepper
4 oz. Manchego cheese
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. Cut the gs in half lengthwise with a serrated or sharp paring knife (it may be
helpful to dip your knife into hot water between slices so as to manage the
stickiness). Place onto a baking sheet, cut side up.
3. Drizzle lightly with balsamic vinegar and crack some fresh black pepper over the
top. Grate the cheese atop the gs.
4. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until cheese is melting and just beginning to brown (when
you smell the nutty Manchego wafting from the oven, its just about done). Serve
hot or warm.
Note: It's true that recipes with these few ingredients are simple, but its the quality of
the ingredients that make this dish simply delicious! This is the place to showcase great
fruit, cheese, and your best quality balsamic vinegar.

CAN I GET
A WITNESS?
6 Ways to Rise
Above Suffering.
BY Zo Kors
Learn to watch your drama unfold while at
the same time knowing you are more than
your drama. Ram Dass
Suffering is part of the human conditiones-
pecially for those of us living out our dharma
in the fast-paced, urban trenches of Los Ange-
les. Sometimes, when we are highly emotional
about something, we say we are really in it,
as if we are submerged in the suffering itself.
The most powerfuland perhaps, essential
ways to navigate emotional suffering is to de-
velop the ability to be simultaneously subjec-
tiveand objectiveto observe ourselves in this
state without judgment. In other words, we can
have our feelings, but we are not our feelings.
The greater our ability be our own witness, the
more adept we become at acknowledging, rec-
ognizing, understanding, accepting, and releas-
ing our suffering.
Here are six ways to cultivate your witness:
1// Slow Way Down
Stillness is the prescription for bringing con-
sciousness to everything. Rushing through the
experiencing of anything, including feelings,
means that we miss subtleties and nuances that
feed our understanding of it. The first step in
separating ourselves from our drama is to slow
down and be with it. Resist the urge to DO.
Simply BE.
2// Invoke Your Third Person
It may feel silly at rst, but when you are in
the middle of an emotional reaction, stop and
say, This is Zo having an emotional reac-
tion. Or, This is Zo feeling angry. Work
your way through it until, This is Zo accept-
ing what is and knowing that all will be okay.
If you dont get all the way there, dont worry.
This is a practice in distinguishing yourself
from your emotions, first and foremost.
3// Checkpoint: Mindfulness
Set an alarm at regular intervals four times a
day. When the alarm sounds, do a brief mind-
fulness practice. Notice your physical presence
in its environment. You might articulate it like
this: Feet on the floor. Feet on the floor
Hands on the keyboard. Hands on the key-
board Repeating it twice gives the mind
and extra beat to become fully present and ob-
jective. Interrupting the flow of the day with
Mindfulness develops our ability to discern be-
tween emotional and physical experience.
4// Take a Nature Walk
The muscles we use to observe the world
around us are the same ones we use to witness
ourselves. The way the clouds drift in the sky,
the palm fronds rustle in the breeze, or birds
fly in formation, gives context to our suffering,
by reminding us that there is an entire world
around us that exists beyond our point-of-view
or struggles in the moment.
5// On the Arc of a Rainbow
Just as connecting with nature can set a con-
text for a difficult moment, stepping back and
considering how that moment fits into your life
story can set a different, and equally power-
ful context. We tend to assign undue urgency
or importance to our experiencesespecially
when they are emotionally chargedwhen
they are really just one small chapter in the arc
of our entire story.
6// Lighten Up
There is a not-so-ne and fairly blurry line be-
tween pain and self-pity. Denying or burying
our emotions can be hazardous to our health.
At the same time, so can taking ourselves too
seriously. Holding things lightly can go a long
way in cultivating grace in the dancing with our
feelings.

THE FOUR
CHALLENGES
OF TEACHING
MEDITATION
MEDI TATI ON WI TH THE RADIANCE SUTRAS BY DR. LORI N ROCHE
There are around twenty million people experimenting with meditation in the United
States, and learning to meditate is on the to-do lists of millions more. Yet, there is a
pervasive sense of failure among many of those seeking to develop a daily meditation
practice. Everywhere I go England, Canada, across the US, and Australia people
are reporting a sense of frustration: They want to meditate but they can't nd what
works. Each time they try something that does not work, they get more frustrated
and convinced there is something wrong with them. This feeling of failure is a kind of
subtle-body yoga injury, a sense of being bruised and decient. People are sitting in
meditation, hitting themselves (hims - to strike, himsa - injury) saying, Shut up, all
you thoughts. In a way, it is a violation of ethics, of ahimsa (non-harming) to train
people to be at war with their own hearts and minds.
We can do better than this. With regard to asana, yoga teachers have developed be-
ginner classes, and in them, the instructors are not telling beginners, Yoga is Urdhva
Dhanurasana. Okay, go ahead and get in that pose and hold it for half an hour. And
stop complaining. These beginner classes are friendly, inviting, and build skills step-
by-step. Asana instructors have learned to be cheerfully vigilant to keep beginners
from injuring themselves by doing poses they are not ready for. We need to develop
this kind of expertise in the realm of yoga called meditation.
Here are some of the challenges we are facing:
Everyone i s di fferent.
Krishnamacharya (often considered the Father of modern yoga) often said that
yoga teachers must always consider their students individually and ask, is this prac-
tice that I am teaching appropriate for this particular student? Are the practices use-
ful and well-suited for this individuals deha (body, shape, appearance, mass), vrt-
tibheda (differences in mental modications), and marga (path, route, way, passage)?
To honor what Krishnamacharya is saying here, meditation teachers have to learn
to discern the students individuality in terms of physical constitution, emotional na-
ture, mental learning style, and life path. Then design a meditation practice that ts
in with and supports each area of that persons daily life.
Krishnamacharyas son, Desikachar, was asked about his approach to teaching yoga,
and he said, The practice is adapted to suit the needs, abilities, and interests of each
individual. Unfortunately, today's standardization is a one-size-ts-all approach.
This can impose great risk. I never compromise by standardizing yoga practices for
different people. Adapting yoga to suit the needs of every unique individual is where
the true greatness of yoga lies.
I tried to meditate
but couldnt make my
mind blank.
We did a meditation in
class but I couldnt make
my mind stop. It was
just a whirl of thoughts.
I had a great meditation
on the beach at sunset
on a yoga retreat, but Ive
never been able to get
there again, to feel that
way at home.

LAYOGA. COM 51
Medi tati on i s i nvi si ble i nner yoga.
Asana is visible yoga, but meditation is invisible and inter-
nal so how do we help people learn? If a yoga student is
in a posture, her teacher can see her alignment at a glance,
come over, and offer a gentle adjustment. But what if she is
sitting there meditating? How can you see her inner asana
ow, the way she is dealing with the continual stream of sen-
sations, emotions, images, internal conversations, and inner
choreography of her to-do list? And if you sense that she is
frustrated and doesnt know how to deal, how do you ad-
just her meditation? This is another one of the challenges
facing all meditation teachers.
This invisible inner yoga is half of yoga, if we use Patan-
jalis brilliant conception of ashtanga (ashta=eight, anga=a
limb of the body). The rst four angas (yama, niyama,
asana, pranayama) are considered bahir anga, or relating
to external, outer, exterior. The next four angas are con-
sidered antara (being in the interior; near, related, intimate;
soul, heart), pratyahara (the senses turning within), dha-
rana (holding, supporting, holding a thought), dhyana
(from dhi, thought, reection, meditation, devotion, splen-
dor), and samadhi (putting together, joining or combining
with). Our English word meditation refers to the process
of moving through these four angas.
In an interview with Yoga Journal, Desikachar said, Yoga
was primarily evolved for inner limbs such as mind, senses,
emotions. Unfortunately, many yoga teachers themselves are
not aware of these techniques to be able to guide students in
these domains. It is my sincere wish that both teachers and
students of yoga move beyond their obsession with the body
level, to actually experience these subtle and more powerful
dimensions of this ancient wisdom. This requires patience
and commitment and a serious search to look at oneself.
I disagree a little bit with Desikachar here, in that it seems
to me that many students actually go into meditative states
during asana practice and in the savasana that follows. It
seems to me that savasana is often too short, and people are
not lingering in the profound symphony of sensation cre-
ated by the asana practice.
I dont know if it was true a thousand years ago on the
other side of the world, but here in the modern West people
drop into meditation very quickly. Through research con-
ducted at Harvard Medical School over the past 40 years
(by Herbert Benson and his associates), it has been estab-
lished that people with a minimal amount of training in
meditation enter deep meditation in three to ve minutes, as
measured by their physiological instruments. Think about
that for a moment: Those who meditate enter a state of rest
measurably deeper than sleep in three to ve minutes. That
is the external physiological correlation. Inwardly, they are
shifting through the inner angas more rapidly. Most people
cycle into deep meditative states, and then out of them in
this three to ve minute cycle. If someone meditates for ten
minutes, he might have three or more cycles of in and out,
inward and outward, restfulness and restlessness. Therefore
an important aspect of teaching meditation is showing them
how to ride these rhythms, surf these inner waves.
There are a hundred and twelve ways.
There are a hundred and twelve ways. A classic yoga medi-
tation text, the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra, lists 112 yuktis
(methods of meditation). The classic mindfulness and
breathing awareness meditations are here, plus techniques
involving kundalini, chakras, spinal awareness, mantras
and also wild practices with music, dancing, sex, being
alone in nature, and witnessing the ow of passion and
emotion. You can be in any mood, any life circumstance,
and nd a doorway into meditation. This is great because
there is something for everyone. Wherever you are, you can
go inside and refresh yourself in the essence of life. (If you
are interested in this tantra, check out The Radiance Sutras,
my version).
When we consider how each of the classic practices needs to
be modied to be suitable for a particular individual, there
are thousands of combinations. This is a challenge for both
teachers and students, because there is not enough time to
try all of them on. In fact, there is no one teacher who can
know all hundred and twelve ways intimately. The teach-
ers who are greatest at leading people on wilderness trips
to meditate under the stars, are probably different than the
ones who are best at teaching singing meditations, dancing
meditations, or chakra meditations. In the Vijnana Bhairava
Tantra, the Goddess uses the word bharita, (nourished, full),
Lead me into that nourishing state of fullness. Thus, both
teachers and students need to be aware of the whole buffet,
the vast salad bar of possible approaches to yoga medita-
tion, so that each of us can nd the most nutritious practice.
People outgrow thei r practi ce.
I often work with people who have meditated for years in
one approach a sitting meditation, or mantra meditation
and then one day they just feel like they are over it. They
did not want to meditate anymore. When they come for a
private session, we discover that they are just over that par-
ticular technique, for example, they are tired of just sitting.
Its as if their prana body is saying, Got that stillness thing.
Now lets dance! They actually are called to a different
type of meditation practice, one they may not even recog-
nize as meditation.
In terms of asana, there are thousands of skilled yoga teach-
ers who have learned to adapt the standard poses to the
diverse bodies of students who are coming for instruction.
You can go to them for private sessions and receive wonder-
ful individualized teaching. Now we need to train medita-
tion teachers to have this same skill. Lets get going.
Dr. Lorin Roche was lucky enough to
begin practicing asana, pranayama, and
meditation in 1968, and he still feels like
a beginnerevery day. The Radiance
Sutras, a new version of the Vijnana
Bhairava Tantra, is available from

A Thousand Suns /CD
by GuruGanesha Band
Spi ri t Voyage Records
Yogi Bhajan said that inside each human be-
ing is a light that is brighter than a thousand
suns. His lectures inspired many songs and his
messages set the vibration for this powerful,
intuitive series of mantras.
GuruGanesha Singh and Paloma Devi com-
bine their hypnotic and stunning vocals with
the mesmerizing cello of Hans Christian, col-
lectively inviting the presence of the divine
into the heart of every listener.
The opening track, A Thousand Suns, re-
lays the message to open your heart with
Ang Sang Wahe Guru, which translates to
The dynamic, loving energy of the Innite
Source of All is dancing within my every cell,
and is present in my every limb. My individual
consciousness merges with the Universal con-
sciousness.
Thy Will Be Done draws us deeper into
the Naam, or sacred sound current, by ask-
ing us to surrender to the will of the Divine
and serve.
GuruGaneshas previous albums have primar-
ily featured words from the Sikh tradition. It
is a beautiful change to hear him lend his tal-
ents to the famous Hindu mantra Sri Ram.
Paloma Devis vocals on this track are par-
ticularly sensual, strong, and sacred.
This album blessed with Guru's grace and
cosmic innite bliss is a joyful accompaniment
to any practice.

Moments from the Life
Stories of Strangers /CD
by Steven Chesne wi th The
Lumi nous World Orchestra
Brahmasong Records
Listening to this CD, you feel as if you are
ensconced in a lm. Musical swells and or-
chestral instrumentation are layered to create
cycles of tension and release.
What strikes me upon my rst listen of Mo-
ments from the Life Stories of Strangers, Part
One by Steven Chesne with The Luminous
World Orchestra is its poetic ebb and ow,
an experience that dees labeling. Be it the
ethereal, hopeful instrumentation of songs
like Invocation, the grounding, deep tones
and sometimes soft qualities of, When The
Love Will Rain Down Upon You, or the
somehow classical-Americana feel of Yor-
kietown, this album takes on the qualities
of a soundtrack that seamlessly explores a
plethora of musical directions. Additionally,
theres a Native American quality to Glory
Story #2 and some Asian tonal texture to
Change, Your Only Friend.
When one learns about Steven Chesnes back-
ground, it all makes sense. Chesne has put
forth much more musical work than his four
critically-acclaimed albums with The Lumi-
nous World Orchestra (of which he is the pri-
mary conductor/music director). He has also
scored multiple lms and over 300 episodes of
primetime network TV shows, and recorded
concertos, orchestral suites, tone poems, and
more. That sensibility weaves its way into
these recordings, as they offer soothing, pictur-
esque tracks that convey deep emotional quali-
ties, seemingly woven into stillness and spirit.

Igniting the Beauty /CD
by Brenda McMorrow
Whi te Swan Records
Brenda McMorrows Igniting the Beauty cap-
tures the sweetness of the sacred sound ex-
perience. The title itself speaks to the unique
beauty we all embody, the beauty that ignites
our heart re when we chant and sing mantras.
Igniting the Beauty has a variety of moods
and feelings. Brenda approaches Ganesha
Om with a fresh perspective, combining
the Sanskrit mantras with original folk and
bluegrass arrangements. Other tracks feature
Brendas personal renditions of traditional
mantras sprinkled with English lyrics; one ex-
ample of this is found in May I Awaken /
Govinda Bolo where she weaves together the
Sanskrit lyrics and their English translations.
Her light and carefree vocals on Gayatri /
Shine the Light emanate both meditative
and soulful experiences. The strongest chant
on the album, Anandamayi, is the ultimate
sound nectar that provides the listener with
a deeply-introspective sound experience. The
harmonies within the track offer multiple lay-
ers of sound.
Brenda collaborated with acclaimed musician
and producer Ben Leinbach, whose talents
can be found on drums, percussion, and elec-
tric guitar.
The overall mood of Igniting the Beauty is
devotional with a distinctly Americana feel
for the sacred Sanskrit sounds. This record-
ing expresses Brendas own experience with
how the power of sound can be expansive and
heart-opening.

Gurujis Gift/BOOK
by Alanna Zabel &
Mary-Margaret Mi tchel
AZI AM Books
Some of the most lasting childhood memories
are shaped by books. Do you remember that
feeling of awe inspired by a magical tale, or of
being instantly transported to a faraway place
through a vibrant illustration? Hardly a kid, I
felt that childlike sense of wonder while read-
ing Gurujis Gift, one of four titles in Alanna
Zabels collection of childrens books.
Alanna is the founder of AZIAM Yoga,
holds a BA in Psychology and Child Devel-
opment, and teaches yoga to adults (singer
Adam Levine was a student) as well as kids.
Her discovery tale about Ashtanga Yoga
founder Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois, aka Gu-
ruji, depicts his life journey; from practicing
yoga with Sri T. Krishnamacharya, to nding
his bliss through teaching -- and helping oth-
ers uncover the same.
The beautiful watercolors accompanying the
words are the handiwork of Mary-Margaret
Mitchelltheyre as much a joy to look at as
the story is to read. The detail in the Hindu
iconography of the Ganesha elephant and
Goddess Krishna is wonderful; I found myself
tracing their lines, as if doing so would un-
cover hidden meaning.
Gurujis Gift is an evocative way to get kids
(and adults!) interested in the meaning of
yoga. As Alanna wrote in the preface, If you
give purely from your heart / You will grow
endless elds of owers. This little book is a
testament to that.

Misadventures of a
Parenting Yogi /BOOK
by Bri an Leaf
New World Li brary
Having a child means that life as you know
it is over. Or at least that is what parents tell
expecting couples who nod politely, never re-
ally knowing what that means until they are
knee deep in dirty diapers, breast milk, and
burp cloths. Even the most conscious yogi is
not immune to the trials of parenthood, least
of all author Brian Leaf, who explores the ins
and outs of co-sleeping, circumcision, and the
art of discipline through unconditional love in
his latest memoir Misadventures of a Parent-
ing Yogi.
The book is as much a primer for new par-
ents seeking alternatives to traditional parent-
ing approaches as it is an amusing journey
through mishaps and tiny victories that only
a caregiver can experience. Leaf dives into the
pros and cons of many decisions facing new
parents. With humor and compassion he ex-
plains the choices he and his wife settle on,
inserting insight from various experts.
Leaf explains it best when he says, Parenting
young children is not unlike serfdom. Except
that youre madly, wildly in love with your
feudal lords. Indeed, Misadventures of a Par-
enting Yogi is a chronicle of one mans Bhakti
yoga practice and the lessons learned along
the way.

Yoga Warrior 365 /DVD
by Rudy Metti a
UDAYA Entertai nment
This is one gutsy yoga DVD. The box set con-
tains 13 discs, which amounts to 36 pose tips
and 13 hour-long yoga classes taught by ex-
Marine-turned-yoga-instructor, Rudy Mettia.
Most classes take place in a studio setting,
where Mettia leads about 15 taut and toned
students in his zany style, made all the more
entertaining by his quirky sense of humor and
deep Southern drawl.
Each disc offers a themed Power Yoga-based
class. Once youve run through one cycle of
discs, return and proceed to work up from the
introductory Gathering class (performed in
what looks like a Coliseum), choosing discs
based on what your body needs. To work on
the shoulders, pop in disc two, called Respon-
sible Warrior, and expand with Eagle Arms,
Dolphin Push Ups and Planks. If youre look-
ing for a heat-inducing ow, disc ve, Fluid
Warrior, will test your abilities in a sweaty
Vinyasa. My favorite class is on disc four,
Gentle Warrior, for its Yin approach and
emphasis on long holds in forward bends.
Check out the bonus CD for the yoga class
performed in a forest.
Yoga Warrior 365 offers variety, provides
useful insights, and is captivating with ev-

78 LAYOGA. COM
This month begins with an attitude of devotion
and concludes with a calling to shatter old paradigms
and commit yourself to worthy causes.
June 1 - 2
June starts off with a lot of sensitivity, emotions, and hopefully devo-
tion with the Moon in Cancer, aspected by Saturn in Libra. These are
good days to connect with family and in other situations where there
is seless love owing. The aspect from Saturn shows the possibility
of hurt feelings revealing the need for more realistic boundaries and
expectations.
June 8 - July 2
Communication issues and technology snafus may appear for the next
several weeks when Mercury turns retrograde in Gemini. This is a
good time to listen more and speak less, and identify those areas in
your life where you are spread too thin and not giving proper atten-
tion to detail. These are the areas of life that mess up the most during
Mercury retrograde cycles.
June 9 - 12
Expect a lot of emotional intensity leading up to the Full Moon in
Scorpio on June 12. From June 9-12, the Moon passes over Saturn
and Rahu. Be careful not to be driven by fear and jealousy. On the
Full Moon we tend to be consumed by emotion, which balances the
Sun sign cycle. In this case, the stability of the Sun in Taurus is being
harmonized by the intensity and vulnerability of Scorpio. You may feel
pulled in many directions, doubting all of the solid structures, com-
forts, and relationships in your life.
This Full Moon happens in the Nakshatra of Jyeshta, ruled by Lord
Indra. He is the King of the Devas, and the one ready to go to battle
to defend the kingdom. We must take care and make sure to ght the
good ght, rather than seek an outer enemy as way to avoid the inner
work.

A combination of aggression, commitment, and hope will ood our
mind with the Moon in Sagittarius, aspected by Saturn, Mars, and
Jupiter. The aspect of these three outer planets will be inspiring, yet
pressurizing psychologically. This is a time to dream big, but be care-
ful overplaying your hand in any face-to-face situations. You may be
a little ahead of yourself, seeing a hopeful potential where none exists,
and with a little more bark than bite.

A new cycle of hope, inspiration, and teaching begins when Jupiter
enters cancer. This is a long-term transit, that lasts for the next year.
Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, so the year ahead proves to be most in-
spiring. Keep on the lookout for a new teacher or philosophy to show
up in your life between now and the end of June. The next year is a
great one for studying higher, philosophical principles as well as being
a great time for you to step more into a teaching role.

Romance, beauty, and wealth are possible when the Moon joins Venus
in Taurus. The Moon is exalted here, and joined Venus, the ruler of
Taurus. This commendation brings emotional stability (exalted Moon)
and the capacity to fulll our desire (Venus in Taurus), and most im-
portantly be content with what we have already. The great lesson is to
appreciate the beauty in the things you have, and in the natural world
and people which inhabit it.

A new cycle of communication, curiosity and exibility begins with
the New Moon in Gemini. When the Sun and Moon come together,
spirit, soul, heart, and mind converge around the themes indicated. In
this case, Gemini is the sign where our childlike curiosity compels us
to learn, gather information, and then adapt based on increased intel-
ligence. This also compels us to communicate what we nd for the ben-
et of others. However, we must be careful to not become seduced by
novelty and trivia. On this new Moon, Mercury, the ruler of Gemini,
is retrograde. Thus, confusing the details and mis-communicating our
ndings is possible.
This New Moon happens in the Nakshatra of Ardra, ruled by Lord
Shiva, the destructive/transformative aspect of God. Now is the time
to shatter old paradigms and be willing to adjust your life accordingly.
Make sure the causes you defend are worthy.

Hridaya
Mudra
Emotional Balance
and Release
Hridaya Mudra translates into English as
Heart Seal. Drawing the index finger to
the base of the thumb returns the individu-
al heart-mind to its essential state of being
grounded. Joining the tip of the thumb to
the middle finger stabilizes the circulation
of vital energy in the organism as a whole.
It is notable that in Chinese medicine the
heart meridian terminates at the little finger,
so its extension here suggests a liberation of
the spirit of the heart into joy. Sitting quietly
while holding this mudra can help center the
feelings of the heart and facilitate emotional
balance and release.
