Love Stinks: 12 Movies for the
Valentine's Day Haters
"The First Wives Club"
Based on Olivia Goldsmith's bestseller, "The First Wives Club" is tart, bittersweet, and
frothy. After a heartbroken college friend commits suicide, three women reunite to exact
revenge on their exes who abandoned them for trophy wives. Goldie Hawn plays Elise, a
vain movie star. She clashes with brash Brenda (Bette Midler), while Annie (Diane Keaton)
wants the trio to get along as they implement their plan so they can bring all women
justice.
"Love Stinks"
This 1999 comedy stars French Stewart as Seth, a sitcom writer who meets beautiful
Chelsea (Bridgette Wilson) at a wedding. Their bliss turns into a nightmare for Seth when
he fails to propose when she expects him to. When Chelsea makes his life hell, he takes
action to dislodge her from his home. "Love Stinks" dishes out sophisticated and lowbrow
humor, serving as a relationship warning to both men and women while keeping us
splitting with laughter.

"(500) Days of Summer"
Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a romantic at heart who falls for Summer (Zooey Deschanel),
who doesn't believe in love and is convinced that life always interferes with relationships.
Optimistic Tom is a card writer at a greeting card company, although he really wants to be
an architect. The movie unfolds out of chronological order, with each scene slated to reveal
which day of their relationship it is.

"The Talented Mr. Ripley"
This dark, stylish 1999 film takes place in New York in the late 1950s. Matt Damon plays
Tom Ripley, an underachieving opportunist who masks his true identity while retrieving
rich playboy Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law) from Europe. Dickie and Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow)
have a difficult relationship, and wealthy Meredith Logue (Cate Blanchett) adds to the
suspicion. When Dickie tires of Tom, Tom goes to great dishonorable lengths to usurp
Dickie's privileges.

"High Fidelity"
John Cusack, who plays the lead role of Rob, helped adapt Nick Hornby's book to a
screenplay based in Chicago rather than the original location of London. A 30-something
record store owner, Nick and his fellow music geeks relate Rob's five worst breakups, which
includes the one he experiences during the film. "High Fidelity" looks at relationships from
the point of view of ordinary men.
"American Beauty"
Academy Award winner "American Beauty" is a grim study in facades. Lester and Carolyn
Burnham (Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening) seem to have the perfect life. Lester lives a life
of depressed desperation and becomes infatuated with his teen daughter's seductive
friend Angela (Mena Suvari). This dark drama is an effective antidote for those seeking the
first relationship they see on Valentine's Day.
"Heathers"
This dark, disturbing 1988 drama follows Veronica (Winona Ryder), a high school student
who sticks with the popular girls, all named "Heather," to get by. Playing the three Heathers
are Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk, and Kim Walker. Veronica befriends the antisocial
sociopathic J.D., played by Christian Slater in a performance inspired by Jack Nicholson.
Their relationship quickly falls in a downward spiral when Veronica realizes how J.D.'s vision
of exacting revenge is much more twisted than her own.

"The Good Girl"
In a dark departure from her sparkling rom-com roles, Jennifer Aniston stars as Justine
Last, a dissatisfied discount store clerk in a small town. Married to Phil (John C. Reilly), she
begins an affair with brooding Holden Worther (Jake Gyllenhaal). Worther, a "Catcher in the
Rye" aficionado, is a disturbed Holden Caulfield wannabe who presents her with a less-
than-ideal alternative to her marriage.
"Closer"
"Closer" depicts two dissatisfied couples that become entangled with each other. Dan (Jude
Law) is involved with gentle, clingy Alice (Natalie Portman), but has an affair with hard-
shelled photographer Anna (Julia Roberts). Anna cannot choose between Dan and her
boyfriend, brutish physician Larry (Clive Owen). Complicating the quartet is Larry's
involvement with the increasingly manipulative Alice.
"Chasing Amy"
In "Chasing Amy," comic book artists and lifelong friends Holden (Ben Affleck) and Banky
(Jason Lee) meet fellow comic book artist Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams). She is the object of
Holden's unrequited love. While he is disappointed to learn that she is gay, they develop a
close friendship. This finely drawn, unconventional love story weaves Banky's jealousy and
Alyssa's complex past into the storyline.

"The Descendants"
George Clooney plays attorney Matt King, whose wife Patricia is comatose following a
powerboat accident. King is a real estate mogul in Hawaii who has a distant relationship
with his daughters Alexandra (Shailene Woodley) and Scottie (Amara Miller). Matt's
mourning over his wife's condition instantly changes when his oldest daughter informs
him that her mother had been having an affair. The trio travel to Kauai to meet with
Elizabeth's lover and put together the pieces that he'd been missing for too long. In this
emotionally rich drama, King must make decisions that affect both his family and their
treasured island.
"Annie Hall"
This 1977 classic stars writer and director Woody Allen as Alvy Singer, a phobic New York
comedian. Singer falls in love with Annie Hall, a ditzy, neurotic New Yorker who has a
fashion-forward style. The film traces the lifespan of their relationship. Allen won Oscars for
directing and screenwriting, and the film won Best Picture. Keaton won a Best Actress
Oscar in the title role that was written for her.
With relentless social pressure, Valentine's Day can be difficult for those in bad or no
relationships. Sometimes the best medicine to keep the holiday at bay is to become
immersed in a film that serves up a healthy dose of cynicism about Cupid's arrows.
