CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
BLACKSMITHING, FOUNDRY AND RESEARCH
RESIDENCIES FOR METALS ARTISTS
DEADLINE: ROLLING

OVERVIEW OF PROGRAM
Residencies include blacksmithing, foundry, conservation/small metals and research
positions. Housing, studio space, some materials and health insurance are provided.
Residencies are awarded based on merit and availability and may last three to twelve
months. Artists interested in exhibiting work at the Metal Museum are encouraged to
apply to the Tributaries exhibition series to coincide with or immediately follow their
residency. Other opportunities for exhibitions in the Memphis area may be available.

EXPECTATIONS
In addition to completing a significant body of work during their stay, resident artists are
expected to
devote at least 36 hours per week to making new work (It is preferred that artists
work during regular business hours)
dedicate 2-4 hours per week assisting with shop projects (i.e., cleaning, repair,
upgrading)
participate in Repair Days, Forging on the River and other Museum events
be friendly and courteous to visitors.
Please note shop projects take precedence over artist-in-residency projects this
includes making space, moving equipment and use of shop employee time.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Interested artists may apply at any time. Residencies are awarded based on merit and
availability. Applications should submit the following materials as electronic versions on
a CD or by email.
1. A letter of interest not to exceed one page describing the body of work to be
completed during the residency. Please include the preferred length and dates
of the residence, any special equipment you may require and how this residency
will serve your career.
2. A resume or biographical sketch, not to exceed 2 pages (please include current
contact information).
3. Twenty images of current work in JPG file format. Images should be no smaller
than 300 dpi and 1280 X 1048 pixels. The images should be organized on the
CD as individual files and named to correspond to the image list requested
below. The JPG file names must include your last name, a number and the
image title (example: smith01untitled.jpg).
4. Numbered Image List, including title, medium, dimensions of the object depicted
and date of making. Materials should be sent to

5. Three professional references.

SELECTION PROCESS
Participating artists are selected by a committee of professional artists, educators and
curators.

Artists will be notified of selection by email within two months of submission. For more
