The Size of the Mobile Market
This visualization uses many colors and there are no links between the same colored
parts. It is poor in perceptual efciency. Also, the informations are unorganized. Too many
visual informations are crowded together that the pie charts are non-compararble. The text
orientations are randomly designed and there is no information about what bn repre-
sents. Among many, only one pie chart randomly has an outer ring to it.

The visualization shows the how much smartphones are used in comparison to other tech-
nologies for different purposes like SMS, Internet and so on.
The intended audience are the developers or users(or potential users) of smartphones.
The scale of the data differ. Some of them use units in percentages and some use bn. It
uses ratio scales.

Step 1: Sketches
Initially, I was thinking of having a WORLD MAP with the function of having
a DESCRIPTION POP-UP of each countrys ratio or bar graphs when mouse
is hovered over. Then. I thought that having many bargraphs side by side
makes it easier for the users to see and COMPARE between other graphs.

Step 2
These are the headings of all
pie charts and histograms in
the original visualization.
I categorized the functions of the
visualizations differently according
to the units of each data.
Communication Visualization
A description of the redesign
It visualizes data by limiting the colors. Different color codings for different coun-
tries. Also, the percentage unit charts changed into bar chart where it is more
comfortable for the viewers to recognize how much portion that each subcategories
take up as a percentage. The right side of the visualization is the bar charts that use
bn as unit. However, the Mobile Revenue bar chart is different from the ones
above. From the original pie chart, it can be seen that there are pie charts for each
sub-categories of mobile revenue. So, I did not create 2 extra bar charts, rather I
have chosen to represent this data inside the existing Mobile Revenue bar chart.
These are categories of data does not
use percentage as a unit. Rather, it uses
bn as a unit. So, it use different bar
chart for the ease of comparison.

Bad visualization 2
This visualization has many DISTRACTING VISUALIZATION features such as un-
neccessary images in random places. The unnecessary use of 3 DIMENSIONAL
REPRESENTATION makes it HARD TO COMPARE which ones have relatively
higher values. It is using INAPPROPRIATE DATA AND REPRESENTATION MODEL.
The visualization shows how much bananas are exported from each countries
over the years of 1994 - 2005.
The intended audience are the authorities engaged in international export affairs.
It uses interval scales. The unit is tonne.

A description of the redesign
This visualization uses pop-up tooltips. When mouse cursor is hovered over the
marks, the details( year and the number of bananas exported) of it is brought up.
Each countries are color coded differently. And represented as a legend as well
as acting as a button for data-ltering.
It visualizes data by choosing visual encodings. Filters out data to focus on rel-
evant items (the countries), multiple selections are possible.
This data visualization is better when comparing how the exports of banana
changed over the years between the certain selected country or countries.
