Lesson Plan Primary (Small Group)

General Information
Year Level: Year 5
Students in Class: 34
Learning Area: Mathematics
Lesson Focus: Fractions & Decimals
Group Time: 10-15 Minutes

Background and/or prior knowledge:
Students have already worked on basic fractions and decimals
for the past 2 weeks so have a fair understand of which
category the number will fall into; improper fraction e.g.
Have been working on converting between different types,
such as fraction to decimals etc.
They regularly have quizzes and tests to increase their speed in
converting.
They have played the game Snap before as well as differing
variations.

Teaching Learning Purposes:
Consolidate what the children already know about fractions
and decimals.
Enhance the students speed when converting between
different numerical forms.
Allow them to associate having fun with maths.

Materials:
Mixture of numerical cards; fractions, improper fractions,
mixed fractions and decimals. (See Below)

Before Class Preparation:
Create, print and cut the cards up and have them ready to be
used in the game situation.

My Role:
Run the game from the role as dealer of the cards.
Keep the game running at a reasonable pace, providing help
when the students are stuck so that they are not only playing a
game but learning as well.
Try and deal the cards in a way so that each student has an
equal or somewhat fair chance of winning a few rounds.

Procedure / Learning Experiences:
Explain to the students that we will be playing a maths version
of the game Snap, and will be using the fractions and decimals
that they have been working on for the past few weeks. Refresh
them on the rules of the game if they cant remember. (Less
than 5 Minutes)
Begin the game with basic fractions and decimals cards, playing
through rounds until they are all warmed up and feeling
comfortable with the difficulty of the numbers and converting
between numerical forms. (5-10 Minutes)
Add in the increased difficulty numbers, with higher-level
fractions and decimals to really get them to work hard and test
themselves. (5 Minutes if time allows)

Assessment & Evaluation:
At the start of it I got a few moans and groans from the
children, I expected this however as I knew from watching
previous lessons they did not have much enthusiasm towards
Maths, so to counter this I was prepared with a Maths game.
When I revealed this they got fairly excited and wanted to get
into it.
My decision to use the game Snap paid off as they love the
game having played it before and it being a class favourite.
The opening rounds started off slowly however after the first
2-3 rounds they got into it and were running the game play
really quickly thus we were able to move into the higher
difficulty areas quicker.
An interesting observation was that some of the children who
normally achieved poorly in the theory work shined in this
activity, making me realise they must have different learning
styles to the other children.
Overall was a success, they engaged well with the game and it
helped a lot of them increase their speed. Also I got to see a
different side to some of the students who normally are not the
brightest, as they ended up winning most of it.
Also had students asking their regular teacher when they could
play it again!
