What is Industrial Engineering

Industrial engineering is a branch of engineering that concerns the development,
improvement, implementation and evaluation of integrated systems of people, money,
knowledge, information, equipment, energy, material and process. Industrial engineering
draws upon the principles and methods of engineering analysis and synthesis, as well as
mathematical, physical and social sciences together with the principles and methods of
engineering analysis and design to specify, predict and evaluate the results to be
obtained from such systems. In lean manufacturing systems, Industrial engineers work
to eliminate wastes of time, money, materials, energy, and other resources.
2. Areas Concerned
Industrial engineering is concerned with the design, installation, improvement,
evaluation, and control of socio-technical systems in virtually all sectors, including
manufacturing, distribution, government, energy, health care, and finance. A
distinguishing feature of the industrial engineering discipline is the integration of humans,
machines, materials, and information to optimize the performance of such systems using
available resources in the most efficient way, but without degrading social and physical
environments. Industrial engineering training should provide future practitioners with the
set of competencies that are required to create and maintain flexible organizations,
which in turn are able to adapt continuously to the dynamic environment.
3. Standards in the practice of engineering
Engineering is an important and learned profession. As members of this
profession, engineers are expected to exhibit the highest standards of honesty and
integrity. Engineering has a direct and vital impact on the quality of life for all people.
Accordingly, the services provided by engineers require honesty, impartiality, fairness,
and equity, and must be dedicated to the protection of the public health, safety, and
welfare. Engineers must perform under a standard of professional behavior that requires
adherence to the highest principles of ethical conduct.
4. Professional Values
Professional Engineer licensure enables engineering professionals to advance
higher in their careers and in wide-ranging ways. But becoming a licensed Professional
Engineer (PE) is a difficult and time-consuming process. Are the PE initials after your
name worth the time and effort?

Considered the highest standard of competence for the engineering profession, PE
certification not only enhances an engineering professionals stature, but also represents
higher levels of authority and responsibility. Because the requirements to earn PE status
are stringent, and companies often dont require a PE license for employment, not all
engineers become licensed.
