and competition with other SE Asian countries. Understanding Vietnam In the development of becoming a tourist industry, Vietnam had seen many factors leading up to their advantage
These advantages may include: Foreign investment and infrastructure (airports, roads, hotels) Employment of locals for tourist services Commercial marketing (foods, souvenirs, transport and banking) Reducing poverty in undeveloped regions Preserving cultural icons and natural environments Expanding relations with people from around the world Impacts of Tourism POSITIVE NEGATIVE Dramatic changes into poverty reduction. Conflict Greater understanding of local, cultural, and social environmental environment. Land displacement due to the development of tourist accommodation Preserving natural wildlife and traditional Vietnamese culture. Pollution
Economic growth Cost of living increases Provides more jobs Destruction of environment Population growth Statistics- Comparison Comparison rates of tourist arrivals between Vietnam and Thailand Competition When Vietnam was at war, Thailand had the opportunity to develop its economy, including tourism. To this day, Thailands tourist industry is far more advanced than Vietnams tourism industry, both in terms of number of international tourists (over 10 million) and in revenue from tourism.
What Vietnam can learn from Thailand is that due consideration should be taken when developing cheap tours in a large scale to avoid uncontrollable situation at some stage.
Competition Because Vietnam is surrounded by a few different countries, their competition relies on how their country is marketed. This marketing has to persuade and also attract customers to improve their economic as well as social status.
Vietnams biggest competitor is Thailand mainly because Thailand is more westernized. Western chains are found to be rare in Vietnam but they are beginning to change and grow
Vietnam as a tourist industry Vietnam displays their country as a natural environment with beautiful landscapes. Their development in major cities has contributed to their economic and population growth.
But with all the advertisements and marketing, Vietnam still has slums, poverty and congestion in small areas. They aim to lower the statistics and rates of these on going problems as they continue to improve their development as a tourist industry. Bibliography Visit-mekong.com, (2014).
