TEXTS:

PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS
by Serway and Jewett, (9
th
Edition or other less recent edition**)
**The 9
th
edition textbook sold in the bookstore includes an Enhanced WebAssign access
code. If you purchase a used textbook or an older text version without an access code, you
must also purchase an Enhanced WebAssign access code which allows you access to your
online homework assignments.

LABORATORY:
The lab course will begin during the FIRST week of classes. Procedures, grading policy,
etc. for the lab course will be discussed during the first LAB meeting. Note that lab is its
own 1 credit course and doesnt impact your lecture grade.

RECITATIONS:
Recitations will commence during the FIRST week of classes. All recitation classes will
use worksheets posted on Blackboard in the Recitation folder/tab on the left side.
Students must print these sheets and bring to recitation each week. Assignments
completed for recitation DO count towards the lecture grade for this course.

EXAMS: This course will have three one-hour examinations scheduled during lecture class and a final
exam given during finals week. All exams are announced and can be found on the course
schedule. The exams will consist of problems and questions similar to the homework
problems, examples from the text, recitation exercises, and problems and questions
discussed in class. Students may create their own equation sheet for use on the exam.
Information must be written on one side of an 8.5" by 11" sheet of paper. No sample
problems or notes may be included on the sheet. The sheet will be checked DURING each
exam and infractions will result in a lowered exam grade.

JiTT AND CLICKER
QUESTIONS, GROUP
PROBLEM SOLVING,
QUIZZES:
Between lecture classes you will be asked to complete JiTT (Just-in-Time-Teaching) readings
and questions through Blackboard. You will also be asked to answer clicker questions
during lecture and work in groups on problem solving activities. All of these contribute to
your final grade. Several announced quizzes may be given during lecture classes.

HOMEWORK
PROBLEMS:

Students will be required to complete homework assignments from Enhanced WebAssign,
a web-based homework system. This is explained in more detail in the textbook and on the
course Blackboard site. Check the WebAssign website for scheduled assignments.

GRADING: The course grades will be determined using the following weights:
Three Hour Exams: 100 points each; Final (comprehensive) Exam: 200 points
Recitation Participation: 100 points; Recitation Homework: 50 points
WebAssign Homework: up to 150 points
JiTT/Clickers/Group Problem Solving/Quizzes: up to 150 points

Total Course Points: ~950 points (100%)

Letter grades for the course will be assigned using the following approximate guidelines:
100% - 88% = A; 87% - 75% = B; 74% - 62% = C; 61% - 50% = D; Below 50% = F
