Synopsis
Thermodynamics is an important basic engineering subject where concepts such as systems,
boundaries, mass, heat, work and energy are introduced. These concepts are then related using
the 1st and 2nd Law of Thermodynamics. In this subject properties of common substances such
as water, air and general working fluids are introduced using property tables and basic state
equations. These concepts are applied in many engineering equipments, basic refrigeration and
power cycles. Such basic concepts are vital because they form the fundamentals for future
chemical engineering subjects.

Apply the 1st Law of Thermodynamics to calculate
heat, work and energy for both closed and open
systems. In other words capable of deriving and
carry out energy balance on various systems
Apply the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics for entropy
balance on various systems.

Analyze and calculate the performance of power and
refrigeration cycles

NOTES:
Students are responsible to submit all assignments on time. Failure to do that will be penalised. Students
will be divided into group to do their homework. Everybody will take turn to be a leader in their group for
completion their assignment.
Attendance: Compulsory and recorded. Students must attend at least 80% of lectures and classes.
Those with attendance less than 80% can be prohibited from sitting final exams.

Groups: Most assignments will be done in groups of 3 people. This cooperative (group) learning is
important training for industry. As reported in the April 1993 issue of ASEE PRISM Magazine, "Many of
today's most successful engineering graduates have more of a team orientation, which is essential". The
key to groups success is that groups should meet after each member had done the problem set.
Course ethics: Group solutions for assignments do not mean that you divide up the homework and each
person does one or two problems. It means that you work together to teach each other and learn from
each other. Each group assignment is required to have the following statement on the last page:
This assignment was done jointly and each of us knows how to do each problem.
Each person should sign this statement.
You cannot copy the solution of another group or another person. Any instances of dishonesty on
homework or tests will result in a grade of zero and can be grounds for failure in the course. Ethical
conduct in courses and in the practice of engineering is very important.
Last but not least. I truly hope you will enjoy my classes and benefit from the knowledge gained.
EXAMINATION AND TESTS ARE CONDUCTED IN AN OPEN TEXTBOOK MANNER.
ONLY ONE TEXTBOOK IS ALLOWED.
THE TEXTBOOK SHOULD BE KEPT AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE WITH NO HANDWRITTEN
SOLUTIONS AND QUESTIONS OTHER THAN THAT ALREADY IN THE TEXTBOOK.
STUDENTS WHO DO NOT COMPLY TO THESE RULES CAN BE ACCUSED OF CHEATING
AND WILL BE SUSPENDED.
