Fiji's Military To Support Elected

Government - Commander

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces

(RFMF) will support the elected
government and accept the outcome
of the 2014 General Election, the
Fijian military's commander said
Wednesday.
Speaking at the RFMF Commander's
parade for military personnel who
have just returned from the United
Nations Disengagement Observer
Force mission in Golan Heights, Syria,
RFMF Commander Brig. Gen. Mosese
Tikoitoga urged the 196 officers and
others to remain apolitical at all times.
"We should not be involved in any
political party activities nor should we
be participating in any political party
activities, but rather we should remain
apolitical for the mere fact that we
should be ready to accept the role of
the custodian of any government that
comes into power after the election,"
Tikoitoga said.
"We can only do that if we remain
neutral in preparation prior to the
election, remain neutral during the
election and accept the result of the
election and subject ourselves to the
government that comes into power
after the elections," he added.
The commander said the Fijian military
will not favor any individual or political
party and reminded those who had not
read the constitution to familiarize

Frank Bainimarama Greeted By Protesters Outside

Sydney Election Rally
Protestors were refused entry into Canterbury Town Hall to take part in a pre-election meeting with Fiji PM Frank Bainimarama.

Fiji's military leader has been

greeted by protesters in Sydney as he
campaigns ahead of next month's postcoup elections.
Hundreds of Fijian citizens attended a
rally in Sydney's south-west to coincide
with a visit by Frank Bainimarama.
Supporters of Mr Bainimarama and
others approved by his government
were allowed inside Canterbury Town
Hall for a question-and-answer session.
"Everything he has done for Fiji has
turned out good," one man said.
However, other members of the Fijian
community, including those in the
Sydney-based Fiji Democracy and
Freedom Movement, were not allowed
in and protested outside.
"What I wanted to do was to ask any
questions but they didn't allow that,"
said Usaia Waqatairewa, national
president of the Fiji Democracy and
Freedom Movement.
Mr Waqatairewa said his group has
been calling for Mr Bainimarama
to stand down and cede control to a

caretaker government until polls can

be held.
"What we are talking about his is
controversial leadership of the last
eight years," Mr Waqatairewa said
A line of police stopped the protesters
from entering the hall.
The protesters said the election process
favoured Mr Bainimarama's Fiji First
Party.
Latest opinion polls in Fiji show 60 per
cent support for Mr Bainimarama to be
the legally elected prime minister.
The protestors also condemned
Australia's Foreign Affairs Minister
Julie Bishop for allowing Mr
Bainimarama to visit.
A Fiji citizen who attended the
rally said she wanted to know Mr
Bainimarama's position on human
rights, civil democracy and freedom of
the press.
"I am somebody who is genuinely
curious in what he has to say," she said.
Fiji's first post-coup election is to be
held on September 17.

Australian Fijians protest against Frank Bainimarama in Sydney.

How Fiji Outsmarted Australia

Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama

began his first visit to Australia since
taking power in 2006. In response to the
2006 takeover, Canberra had imposed
travel bans for all members of the Fijian
Government. These were abandoned
earlier this year by the Abbott Government.
One would expect such a visit to be about
mending fences and shoring up relations.
But Rear Admiral Bainimarama was not
visiting Canberra to speak with the Abbott
Government. His visit was to Sydney, to
meet with Fijian overseas voters as part
of his campaign for the Fijian elections
next month. Bainimarama is more
concerned with gaining support for his
FijiFirst party than securing the goodwill
of the ostensible leader of the Pacific
Islands region.
This focus on Fijian domestic affairs even
when visiting Australia is symptomatic of
the confidence with which the Bainimarama
Government has approached regional
affairs, and of the fact that it does not feel
cowed by the largest power in the region.
Given the success of Fijian foreign
policy since 2006, this is not surprising.
Despite the fact that Australia provides
Fiji with a significant amount of aid,
Fiji does not regard itself as dependent
on Australia and has been quite
prepared to challenge the Australiadominated regional status quo. Since
2006 the Bainimarama Government
has
assertively
broadened
its
international relationships, both within
the region and further abroad. While a
lot of attention has been given to Fijis
relationship with China, Suva has also
strengthened relations with the rest
of Melanesia and with global players
such as India and Brazil. Overall, Fijis

relations with other states are at their

healthiest since independence.
The Bainimarama Government has
also mounted a strong challenge to
the Australian-backed Pacific Islands
Forum (PIF) by launching its own
rival organisation. The Pacific Islands
Development Forum (PIDF) has now
held two successful summits that
have garnered significant international
attention. While it certainly doesnt
have the resources of the PIF, the PIDF
looks set to stay, and significantly
blunts the impact of Fijis ongoing
suspension from the PIF.
This strengthened web of bilateral
and multilateral relations has given
the Bainimarama Government the
maneuvering room it needs to take a
confident stance against its Australian
critics. When Foreign Minister Julie
Bishop visited Suva last February to
start on the road towards normalising the
relationship, Fijian sources confidently
proclaimed that this was Australias last
chance to remain relevant.
The decision by the Abbott Government
to lift sanctions in February had raised
hopes that there might be a warming
of relations between Fiji and Australia.
Those hopes were always expressed
cautiously, but six months on there has
been little sign that the Bainimarama
Government has been swayed by
Canberras softened stance. When
the campaign trail led Rear Admiral
Bainimarama to New Zealand earlier
this month, he bluntly said that he
doesnt consider Australia a part of
the Pacific Islands region. A harsh
statement, given that Australia is a
founding member of the PIF.

Furthermore,
the
Bainimarama
Government remains determined to
hold elections in Fiji in the manner it sees
fit, including by passing controversial
electoral legislation just over a month
before the poll date. Forcing a return to
democracy had been a key goal of the
Australian sanctions regime, but in that
respect appeasement appears to have
had as little effect as confrontation. The
rhetoric and policies enacted by Suva
have not changed since 2006, nor will
they unless the Rear Admiral is handed
an unlikely defeat on 17 September.
This is not to say that abandoning the
sanctions regime was a bad decision.
There is nothing to be gained from

maintaining an ineffective regime of

sanctions that gave the Bainimarama
Government rhetorical ammunition in
its attempts to reshape the order of the
region to its liking. But it is important to
point out that lifting them has not healed
the rift between Canberra and Suva.
If the Abbott Government wants to
reassert the full measure of Australian
influence then more work is required not
only in Fiji but also in the rest of the Pacific
Islands. The fact that the Bainimarama
Government
weathered Australian
sanctions without feeling the need to
compromise will have implications that
will be felt for some time in what John
Howard described as our patch.

FijiFirst leader and Prime Minister,

Voreqe Bainimarama, spoke about the
name Fijian at the partys campaign
meeting at Raiwaqas Eds Court.
He said the Social Democratic
Liberal Party (SODELPA) had totally
misinterpreted this to the voters.
Other countries have a common name.
In Australia they are called Australians,
in New Zealand they are called Kiwis or
New Zealanders, and in the United States
of America they are called Americans.
Their common name represents their
patriotism to their country.
Now, when people living in Fiji are
called Fijians it will show how patriotic
they are for their beloved Fiji, he adds.
He stressed that calling everyone Fijian
did not take away the racial identity of
the various ethnic groups in Fiji.
Section 5 (2) of the Constitution says:
All Fijians have equal status and

identity, which means they are equally:

(a)
entitled to all the rights, privileges
with benefits of citizenship and
(b)
subject to the duties and
responsibilities of citizenship.
The Prime Minister said the word
Fijian would not take away the rights
of the iTaukei landowners nor would it
mean equal rights to land ownership.
Section 28 (1) says the ownership
of iTaukei land shall remain with the
customary owners of that land and
iTaukei land shall not be permanently
alienated, whether by sale, grant,
transfer or exchange , except to the
State in accordance with section 27.
SODELPA leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa
has been leading her partys campaign
to have only the iTaukei people called
Fijians.
Her claim is that the word Fijian
belongs only to the indigenous people.

I know they want me to go and sit with
them and tell them what FijiFirst is here
for. But, I wont be able to do that at all
places. But I can promise them this, I
can promise the people of Fiji this that
after we win elections, we will go out
and look at all the developments and
tell them what plans are in the pipeline
in regards to roads, electricity, water.
Some people may not see roads in their
areas for the next six months but it is in the
pipeline and it will be done. I want to tell
people that they will not be excluded from
development when FijiFirst wins. There
are a lot of concerns about land from the

landowners, to do with leasing, to do with

ownership. All this will be put to rest. He
further confirmed that the party manifesto
has been finalised and while many of the
Bainimarama-Government policies would
be included, there will be a few surprises.
It is not different from what we have done
over the past few years. But there are a
few surprises. What is more important is
the changing of the mindset of people of
Fiji to accept the Constitution. This is very
important for the progress of this country.
Things such as equal citizenry, not just
in regards to race but also to get in those
on the periphery to get them included in
development. Policies should be targeted
towards this, not just towards one special
group. Mr Bainimarama maintained that
lies were still being spread by political parties
about secular state, land and race issues.
There are still a lot of lies being
spread especially by political Parties
such as SODELPA and NFP. I have
been asked whether people would still
be able to pray to Jesus if FijiFirst
wins. Of course, we will be. These
are the types of questions that are
indicative of the lies that people have
been spreading. I have repeatedly told
people that if these politicians lie to
you now, they will lie to you when they
are in Parliament, they will not have
anything constructive things to do and
say when in Parliament.

No Tap Water Since 1955

QUALITY water is a basic need and

for the villagers of Visa in the district
of Vugalei, Tailevu but this has been
a problem since the establishment of
their village in 1955.
Village headman Emori Latitoga said for
the past 30 years they had been writing
to government through their provincial
council meetings seeking assistance in
the delivery of clean water.

"In 2005 our village was given a total of

seven water tanks from the government
to cater for the 27 houses that make up
our village," Mr Latitoga said.
Mr Latitoga said the water tanks were
only useful during rainy weather for
drinking and during the dry season,
they had to resort to well water and
spring water from wells dug by their
forefathers.

Murray Mccully To Gauge

Fiji Election Preparation

New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray

McCully says that meeting with
Ratu Inoke Kubuabola in Nadi is an
opportune time to gauge whether there
are further areas where they can assist
Fijis preparations for the September
17 elections.
Aside from foreign policy discussions
and regional issues, McCully expects to
get Fijis perspective on the work that

is going into preparing for the ballot.

To date we have provided technical
assistance for the elections process,
totaling $1.55 million, and contributed
$1.5 million towards a project aimed at
re-establishing and strengthening Fijis
Parliament, McCully said.
This is McCullys second visit to Fiji
since the lifting of New Zealands
remaining travel sanctions in March.

One Fiji Party takes over the reins of
the new, legitimate and democratic
government.
According to the party's plans for
education, it would implement a
zero-rate tax on educational material
including textbooks and computers for
full-time students.
Party chairman and leader Filimoni
Vosarogo said while free education
was good, quality and progressive
education was priceless.
"One Fiji Party envisions a Fiji with
educational institutions delivering
customised quality and progressive
education that brings out the best in
every child, and prepares them to
compete on the global professional

market," Mr Vosarogo said.

"You can expect a complete overhaul
of the education system to raise the
standard of education and really leave
no child behind for life, when we take
over."
The declining literary and numeracy
rate at all levels of schooling as
reported by the media, left much to be
desired.
Asenaca Toga Batikara, a former
schoolteacher and party candidate, said
the education curricular failed to churn
out the relevant qualifications needed
to suit the job market.
Mrs Batikara, a specialist in remedial

of stakeholders, namely parents,

Fire Victims In Trauma

RESIDENTS living in the informal

Komave settlement in Nabua are still
traumatised by the fire that razed four
houses two weeks ago.
Margaret Faye, a mother to seven
children, said since the fire on Sunday
morning, her children had not been
able to sleep properly.
"Every time they close their eyes they
will immediately get up and tell me
that they can't sleep because whenever
they close their eyes they see flames,"
she said. "My children are deeply
traumatised by the fire."
Mrs Faye's comments were seconded
by another resident, Sharon Datt, who
said the fire affected everyone and
people were struggling to find closure.
"We are afraid to sleep after that fire
broke out. What if another fire happens

when we are sleeping?" Mrs Datt said.

"Up until now I still cry when I think of
that fire because I could have lost my
mother that morning."
Mrs Datt said she counted herself
lucky that all her family members
were unharmed although they lost
everything in the fire.
A tearful Mrs Datt said everyone was
struggling to cope with their daily lives.
"The real victims in this fire are those
struggling to find shelter for their
families, put food on the table and
most of us here have had to borrow
clothes from others because we have
lost everything," she said.
Non-government organisation Lifeline
Fiji has stepped in to offer counselling
for victims and is encouraging residents
to visit its office at Luke St in Nabua.

Komave settlement resident Sarita Devi points at the remains of houses that
were destroyed in a fire. Victims who lost all their belongings now take shelter

Fiji's 'Sudoku-Like' Voting

Paper

A sample ballot for Fiji's election

shows the enormity of the task voters
face.
Fiji's voters have been presented with
a vast sudoko-like voting paper but the
country's planned democracy restoring
elections next month are sliding into
crisis already.
A special Sunday sitting of the High
Court in Suva will go ahead this
afternoon to challenge the legality of
one of the key steps taken yesterday.
Under a new constitution drawn
up by military strongman Voreqe
Bainimarama, voters will get one vote
only in the September 17 election for
50 members of parliament.
In a unique move, voters will be given
a ballot paper made up of a grid of 248
numbers.
Yesterday the Supervisor of Elections
Mohammed Saneem conducted a
draw to determine which number each
candidate will get.
The three hour long lottery was held in
public and by politicians.
But the state created Fiji Electoral
Commission
refused
to
send

representatives and instead have gone

to court seeking to have the process
declared null and void.
A hearing began last night and will
continue this afternoon.
The numbers of each candidate will
be formally published tomorrow but
some candidates have already begun
advertising and creating jingles around
the numbers that they drew.
It will be vital for people to remember
which number they want to vote for
as Bainimarama's electoral decrees
prohibit people taking written guides
into the polling booths.
The top 50 polling candidates become
MPs.
Bainimarama, who is in Sydney this
weekend campaigning, has said he
believes his FijiFirst Party will take all
50 seats.
Fiji had its last elections in 2006 under a
complex voting system that was partly
based on race and multiple voting.
Bainimarama staged his coup in
December that year and has already
failed to meet one promise to hold
elections.

Crackdown On Drunk

IN a bid to curb drink- driving cases

in the traffic department have been

Police spokesman Inspector Atunaisa
Sokomuri said policeman and women
from stations and community policing
posts were attending the week-long
workshop.
Insp Sokomuri said they were expected
to operate the breathalyser machines
after the workshop.
"There is a process known as the
Commissioners Best Practice referring
to the best standard procedures for
such operations," he said.
"These are the standard operations that
are being taught to these personnel
during this workshop.

"Officers are expected to be able to

hold standard breathalyser tests when
they return from this workshop to their
respective stations and posts."
Insp Sokomuri said the participants
would be tested on their knowledge of
these standard procedures.
"The outcome of the exam will
determine whether an officer can hold
these sorts of operations or otherwise,"
he said.
"The
director
traffic
Senior
Superintendent of Police Mahesh
Sharma is expected to be part of the
workshop."
"We have a tutor from Fiji Police

be taken to the other three divisions in
the country."

Work Warning
Police
Commissioner
Bernardus
Groenewald urged police officers not
to give any political party a chance to
politicise their work.
Mr Groenewald said politicians were
looking for loopholes in the polices
work.
All I can say to you ladies and
especially to our gentlemen, we are not
in a good state at this time because of
what happened in Nadi, he said.
The politicians are running behind
me; the International Red Cross is
running behind me, Shamima Ali is
running behind me so I have shortened

my visit because of the unfortunate

incident that happened.
We need to keep our conduct
professional. It can happen and let this
be an early warning for us; the way we
deal with complainants and accused
and it is unfortunate, at the wrong
time because all of the politicians are
watching us and they want to see if we
can make one mistake and then they hit
again.
The election is our first challenge
and we need to read the Fiji Police
Election Manual 2014. I urge you to
continue to do the good work.

Tui Macuata On Fijifirst

Campaign Trial

FijiFirst vice president and Tui

Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has
cleared any misconceptions on why he
didnt stand as a candidate.
The reason I didnt stand is that I feel
that in my traditional role I will be
better utilised, he said.
I can sit and make sure that developments
are being carried out, that the progress
continues and also to ensure that the
community are well informed and to
assist the community in decision making
in how they manage their resources and
also to watch over the Government in a
way that protects the interests of not only
the iTaukei but also the community.
Ratu Wiliame was on the campaign
trail with FijiFirst candidate and former
Commissioner Northern Inia Seruiratu
in parts of Bua and Macuata last week.
He said they visited Kubulau, Wainunu,
Bua Lomanikoro, Namuka and other
small communities.
He said most of the issues raised were

centered around land issues, the Great

Council of Chiefs and birth registration.
He said that in the past Governments
or certain departments promise certain
things but dont carry them out.
So since they are living in this
province, its part of the job of the
traditional head to ensure that the
services are carried out.
Im also not just here for the iTaukei
but for all if it wasnt for the Indian
farmers and the rice farmers of Dreketi
and the shop keepers of Labasa
Government wouldnt have assisted
the North so I have to be here to see
that the Government does its job
that the services are being provided
fairly to the people and to see that the
traditional set-up provides its service
too to the Government.
I think the main thing is to ensure
the stability the development and the
education taking into consideration
the environment.

Prepare For Final Term:

Minister For Education
The
Minister
for
Education,
National Heritage, Culture and Arts,
Ambassador Filipe Bole is calling on
teachers, parents, school managements
and students to prepare for the final
term of this 2014 academic year.
We are now in the final week of the
Term 2 holidays and with few days left,
everyone should start preparing for
school next week. Parents should now
ensure that stationary for their children
are replenished and ready before the
first day of school, Minister Bole said.
All school managements should now
see the condition of their schools and its
compound. Environment contributes
to the learning of students and school
committees should work around the
clock now to ensure classrooms are
ready and in good shape.
A conducive environment should
be created to maximise the potential
within our students.
Students are encouraged to use their
time wisely and be cautious in these

few days remaining. Parents are

advised to monitor their children and
design programmes that will engage
them in useful activities.
For the students sitting for external
examinations in Year 12 and 13, revise
thoroughly and equip yourselves to
throw questions at your teachers when
you return to school in this final term.
Teachers are advised to make necessary
arrangements to be in school on the first
day of Term 3. Those, who travelled
from rural and remote schools must
ensure they report to school on the first
day to attend the staff meeting.
I am wishing everyone the very best
as we prepare ourselves for the final
term of the 2014 academic year, the
Minister said.
The theme for the Ministry of
Education for 2014 is Embracing
Excellence and I am adamant we will
all collaborate at home, school and in
the wider community to aspire towards
excellence in all that we do.

Sex Education 'Uncomfortable'

WITH Fiji being a predominately
Christian country, teaching focused on
sex education and drug prevention is
not done thoroughly.
These topics tend to make teachers
uncomfortable and can be difficult
to teach, according to some teaching
volunteers.
"On my first day teaching at a school
in Suva, I was made to teach the
kids about menstrual cycles and
abstinence because the teacher was too
uncomfortable," Abbi Raj, a teaching
volunteer said.
Ministry of Education acting permanent
secretary Basundra Kumar, however,
assures that something is being done
about the issue.
"What was once called sexuality
education is rebranded now as family
health. Things like body and hormonal
changes, teenage pregnancies, STIs,

HIV, and AIDS are among the many

topics covered," Ms Kumar said.
"Team teaching is carried out to
cover topics some teachers are not
comfortable with, and the use of guest
speakers and facilitators are also used
to deal with sensitive or technical
matters."
Classes are also being monitored to
make sure they are being taught right.
"Monitoring is done by the HODs
through lesson plans, workbooks, class
base activities, and book check."
The Family Life Education has also
introduced a student-based syllabi
which is complimented by their new
textbook called HOPE.
"All the materials are level appropriate
and user friendly, all the topics in
the syllabi must be taught but with
sensitivity to the students, school
culture and norms."

Viam Pillay Sees Bright

Future

With FijiFirst, there is a bright future,

says 44-yearold Viam Pillay, a party
candidate for next months general
election.
Mr Pillay is from Ba. He has seen a lot
of changes in the Fiji government and
believes that with FijiFirst, everything
would be better for everyone. He is a
community worker and has been a rural
advisory councilor in Ba for 23 years.
He is the chairman of the Ba District
Council. He has also served on various
boards of non-government organisations.
He was also involved in the Peoples
Charter Consultation process for Ba area.
With 23 years of community work, Mr
Pillay said it was through the confidence
of his people and community that he had
gone into politics.
I had never dreamt to be in politics, for
me this would be my first election, he

said. My family, friends and the people

of Ba urged me to go and join hands
with FijiFirst because they know that
there can be no better government than
this. He said in the past seven years,
Fiji had changed and developed for the
better. The changes and developments
are right in front of our eyes and that is
because this Government has thought
about its people fi rst, Mr Pillay said.
Mr Bainimarama is the only prime
minister that has gone out to grass
root level to talk to the people and
hear their grievances, no one else has
done this before. He calls onto the
voters to show their appreciation for
the government and help move Fiji
forward by voting for FijiFirst. We do
not want to go back to the dark days,
lets vote wisely and vote FijiFirst for
a better Fiji.

Fiji's Interim Prime Minister

Remains Elusive In Sydney
Fiji's interim Prime Minister Frank
Bainimarama visited Australia for the
first time in eight years to meet with
the local Fijian community ahead of
the September 17 election.
Notoriously elusive when it comes to
granting interviews, ABC's The World
was invited to attend a meet and greet
at a Fijian curry house in Sydney, in
the hope of putting a few questions to

him about the country's future, but was

rebuffed when attempting to interview
the military leader.
Former president of the Fiji Democracy
Freedom movement Suliasi Daunitutu
tells Bev O'Connor asking Mr
Bainimarama the challenging questions
has always been a frustrating task, and

New Itaukei Version Of Old

Testament Launched

THE Methodist Church in Fiji historian,

Dr Andrew Thornley, has urged the
iTaukei people to get a copy of the Old
Testament of the Bible translated into
original iTaukei language.
The Old Testament's new edition,
Na
Veiyalayalati
Makawa

Vakadewataka ko David Hazlewood

(1864), was launched at the Centenary
Church in Suva.
Dr Thornley said the new edition was
much clearer than the current Old
Testament.

"I am hoping that the Hazlewood

(edition) would bring people back to
reading the Old Testament in Fijian,"
Dr Thornley said.
Church communications secretary
Reverend James Bhagwan said the
new edition was translated from
the Hebrew language by Reverend
David Hazelwood in the mid-19th
century.
The new Old testament translation
is selling for $40 at the Methodist
Bookshop.

Compensation
The long wait is finally over for
44-year-old Amelia Kotobalavu after
receiving a compensation payment of
$12,000 after the passing away of her
husband Timoci Ratoki in 2007.
While handing over the cheque, Deputy
Secretary National OHS and Workers

Culinary Training To Boost Use

Of Local Produce
LOCAL chefs have been told that
tourists come to Fiji to experience
everything Fijian and that should be
their focus when cooking as well.
This is one of the main aims of the
Pacific Culinary Training workshop
jointly organised by the South Pacific
Tourism Organisation and University
of the South Pacific in Nadi this week.
Chefs from Fiji and other Pacific
island countries were at Fiji National
University's Namaka campus with US
chef, Colin Chung, learning to recreate
local produce into unique dishes for
international visitors.

South Pacific Tourism Organisation

project manager Chris Cocker said
the European Union-funded initiative
came about because the tourism
industry needed to be linked with the
agricultural sector.
He said after the training workshop
the organisation would look to start
developing a Pacific Chefs Association.
"This is so that chefs could network
and share information," he said.
The chefs visited the Lautoka market
and Naisoso's herb garden, where Mr
Chung showed his colleagues how to
identify the best vegetables for cooking.

Business Workshop For

Pacific Journo

BUSINESS reporters from around

the Pacific gathered at the Reserve
Bank of Fiji in Suva on Monday for
a three-day workshop organised by
the International Monetary Fund on
economic reporting.
The workshop aimed to enlighten
and up skill business reporters about
their role as a financial journalist in
their respective countries. Business
journalists covered ways to report on
the economy, the role of the central
bank, monetary policy and ways to
help steer the economy.
Interpreting statistics to plain English,
debt restructuring talks, legal dangers
and learning about ethics in journalism
was also presented.
Trainer and chief of Thomson Reuters
Australia and New Zealand Bureau

Lincoln Feast say financial reporters

need to know their central banks and
policy makers well in order to know
the economy.
Participants were also given an
overview of economic indicators and
how it could have an impact on the
country's economic activities.
Another trainer Mathieu Robbins said
financial markets were essential for the
running of a modern economy.
Speaking at the certificate presentation,
Vanuatu journalist Moses Steven said
IMF should also organise financial
journalists for a Media Summit in
Palau in 2016. With the help of the
IMF, he said media organisation
Thomson Reuters should also organise
workshops for financial journalists in
the Pacific.

Visiting Village Is A
Cultural Delight

Tourists who visit Fiji tend to stick

to resorts, but they don't realise how
much they could immerse themselves
in the culture here by going to a village.
This was something I was used to
doing until a couple of weeks ago,
now I can't get enough of going to
villages. A few weekends ago, I went
to Nasautoka Village which has around
100 inhabitants who are related in one
way or another.
Not long after our two-hour journey, we
went bamboo rafting, and I don't think
I know enough descriptive modifiers to
actually explain how amazing this was.
Floating through this abyss of beauty
put me in a state of awe.
We floated down the river for a while
taking in the scenery and then hiked to
an inclusive area in the woods.
The villagers then proceeded to cook us
food the way their Fijian ancestors did,

by using bamboo tubes that exploded

when the food was cooked.
They caught fresh prawns from the
river and gathered cassava and spinach.
To see how they made a meal with only
the resources around them was eyeopening, especially since I can't even
make a meal with my own kitchen
equipment.
As we made our way back, we were
given fresh watermelon slices and
cucumber. The freshness of the food
here is incomparable to anything back
in England.
All of this was followed by traditional
Fijian dancing by the children of the
village along with a kava ceremony.
At the end of the day I felt fully
immersed in the Fijian culture and
was definitely not ready to leave. I will
definitely look into visiting another
village.

Fiji Human Rights Group Praises Police Brutality

Investigation After Prisoner Death
Fiji's NGO Coalition on Human Rights
is hopeful an investigation into the
alleged assault of a prisoner who died in
police custody will bring perpetrators
to justice.
Vilikesa Soko died in hospital after
being arrested in connection with
a robbery in which $FJD50,000
($US27,075) was stolen from a foreign
exchange store in Nadi.
An autopsy revealed massive internal
injuries and trauma consistent with
previous alleged police assaults.
"I believe that the Fiji police, some
elements, not all, some elements within
the police force which is quite capable
of doing this kind of thing," chair of
Fiji's NGO Coalition on Human Rights
Shamima Ali told Pacific Beat.
"If you look at the past deaths in
custody, and things that have been done
to people they match up with the kind
of injuries that this person, this victim,
has sustained."
Commissioner Ben Groenwald has
called on internal affairs to investigate
the case, and says the process will be
transparent.
Ms Ali says despite allegations of the
police force covering up past brutality
cases, she remains hopeful a new
investigation will bring the perpetrators

to justice.
"Provided these people are suspended
while the investigations are taking
place, I very much hope he will be able
to get past the gatekeepers because
there are many gatekeepers in the police
force who cover up for their officers,
so I wish him all the best and we of
course, the human rights community,
we will stand by him," she said.
Commissioner Groenewald says he is
determined the man's family see justice
for what happened to their son.
Ms Ali hopes the community will fight
the culture of fear in Fiji and speak out
on the issue.
"Fiji has become quite a silent society,
they've been drilled into silence, there
can be repercussions if you talk too
much and so on, but I really hope that
people, you know because we're very
religious community, that this will
stir up some compassion and anger at
this, and it's not only the human rights
community that should be speaking
out but everyone else, and I think they
will, I think it will galvanise people,"
she said.

Lawyer Charged With Failing To Return $15 Million In

Condo Deposits
Vivian Wong, Leo Zheng and Thomas Ma are among the prospective buyers who say they lost money in a condo development deal that fell apart.

A lawyer has been arrested and charged

with fraud on allegations that about 150
North York condo buyers were swindled
out of $14.9 million in deposits for a
building that was never constructed.
Meerai Cho, 63, was slapped with a
combination of 75 charges for fraud,
possession of property obtained by
crime and breach of trust, police told
reporters assembled at 32 Division on
Tuesday afternoon.
We are at the infancy of our
investigation, said Det. Const. Chris
Devereux, who says charges in the case
the largest fraud case 32 Division
has ever dealt with could expand as
more victims come forward.
Devereux said Chos accounts were
decimated, and police do not yet
know where the money went or if it left
the country. If it has been removed from
Canada, Devereux said the recovery
process would be very difficult.
Once it leaves Canada, our powers of
authorization and search diminish, he
said.
Though investigators said Cho has
not been co-operating with police,
they noted she has not had any prior
offences or professional suspensions.
Cho, a Toronto lawyer specializing in
real estate, immigration and family law,
was released on bail on the condition
that she agree to appear in court in
October. She was also suspended by
the Law Society of Upper Canada.
A motion put forward by the society
said there are reasonable grounds
to believe that Meerai Cho has
mishandled and lost approximately
$14.9 million in deposit monies paid to
her, in trust and that if Chos licence is
not restricted or suspended, there is a
significant risk of harm to members of

the public.
At a Law Society hearing Tuesday,
Chos lawyer, William Trudell, argued
for an adjournment. Cho wasnt there
because of health issues, he said.
She respects the public interest
and does not intend to practise until
the application has been argued or
resolved, Trudell told the hearing
panel. She has taken steps to ensure
ongoing and existing clients are looked
after by other counsel.
Chos charges stemmed from her
involvement with developer Yo Sup
(Joseph) Lee, of Centrium at North
York, who had planned to turn a
vacant lot at Yonge St. and Finch
Ave. into a 14-storey hotel and
30-storey residential tower with some
commercial space.
Retail and condo buyers said they gave
Cho deposits for units in the building
in 2012. Then, they said, Lee told
them earlier this year that plans for the
building had fallen through.
Cho, who was holding the money for
Lee in trust, promised the funds would
be returned. Shortly after, buyers
said, Cho filed for bankruptcy and the
property was sold.
Cho did not respond to messages left by
the reporter for comment on the matter.
Calls made to Lee were met with outof-service messages and police say
they have yet to locate him.
Thomas Ma, who shelled out $40,000
for a commercial unit in the building,
said he was pleased with the news of
Chos arrest.
I am glad there was quick action by
the police so the arrest will not allow
her to escape, he told the media. This
is just the start. The victims need to get
their deposits back.

Meerai Cho was arrested and charged Tuesday with fraud, possession
of stolen goods and breach of trust. Her bank accounts were
decimated and the moneys missing, police said.

ICBC Rate Hike Proposal Would Push Basic Auto Insurance Up $3

Per Month
Provincial insurance agency says increase necessary to cover rising injury claims
ICBC is applying once again to raise
basic automobile insurance rates
this time by 5.2 per cent in order,
they say, to cover the rising cost of
injury claims due to distracted driving.
"We certainly understand that nobody likes
the news of a rate increase," spokesperson
for ICBC Adam Grossman said. "But the
fact is that the cost of injury claims in B.C.
continues to grow every year.
"They're currently up $1.9 billion a
year that's almost two thousand
million dollars a year just on injury
claims," he said.
The increase would cost most vehicle
owners about $3 per month or $36 per
year, starting Nov. 1, if approved by the
B.C. Utilities Commission, according
to the provincially-owned corporation.
The corporation blames rising accident
rates from distracted driving, and rising
legal and medical bills for the proposed

hike.
"The rising number and cost of injury
claims is commonly the biggest single
factor driving rates for all auto insurers
across North America and beyond,"
said a statement released by the
corporation on Tuesday morning.
"There are various factors contributing
to the increasing number of injury
claims, including the rapid adoption
and use of personal electronic devices
behind the wheel.
"Distracted driving is now the second
leading cause of car crash fatalities in
B.C., with an average of 88 people killed
each year, and the leading cause of rearend crashes which often result in injuries."
The proposal comes just one year after
ICBC requested a 4.9 per cent hike citing
the same reasons, and received permission
to put rates up 5.2 per cent. The extra 0.3
per cent was deferred until this year.

Alert Investigating Illegal Online New Westminster Beach Opens Weapons Sales In Northern
But You Can't Swim In The Water
Timber Wharf at Westminster Pier Park is built three or four metres above the
Alberta
water
The Alberta Law Enforcement Response
Teams are joining up with other
enforcement agencies to crack down on
illegal weapons in the province.
Last week a Fort McMurray man was
accused of buying gun parts online that
could turn a Glock pistol into a fullyautomatic machine gun.
Police seized 13 firearms including
the illegally modified, fully automatic
Glock from the 29-year-olds home
on August 19, along with ammunition.
The modified Glock is a highly
dangerous weapon with a rate of fire
of 1,200 rounds per minute, said Insp.
Gary Peck with ALERT.
Police say the majority of the weapons
were found to be illegally stored. Three
children were also in the home at the
time of the arrest.
The guns owner is facing numerous
possession, alteration and unsecured
storage charges.
The glock is one of the most popular
handguns among licenced owners in
Edmonton, with hundreds being sold
each year.
Links to larger illegal trade network
ALERT says the weapons were
connected to a Langley, B.C.
arms trafficker known as the Dr.
Frankenstein of weapons makers.
The charges were laid after the U.S.
Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms
and Explosives began to investigate
the Langley-based vendor.
According to ALERT, the case was the

first of its kind in Alberta.

It's unique that we did find an
individual that's manufacturing these
parts and conversion kits in Canada,
said Thomas Mangan with the ATF.
Until now, most gun charges laid in
the province were the result of drug
investigations, said Charmaine Bulger
with ALERT.
In the past year we've only actually
investigated one true weapons
smuggling case so were just looking
to maybe get into more of the weapons
smuggling here.
But now Bulger says that the number
of illegal guns in Alberta is growing as
gang members flock to this province to
sell drugs in a booming economy.
"We have seen established gangs
mostly connected to B.C. operate in
Alberta and that's just based on recent
arrests," she said.
Even when the gun is used for hunting
or target practise as the accused claims
his was Bulger said turning a pistol
into a machine gun is a serious offence.
"Maybe tomorrow his place will be
broken into and they get access to
these guns," she said. "Next thing you
know, this gun's on the street for illegal
activity and now we really have to deal
with it."
Bulger said enforcement officials from
all involved agencies will continue
to work together to limit weapons
smuggling and traffic inside Canada
and across the border.

Canada Pulls Its Scientists From

Sierra Leone After Ebola Breaks
Out At Their Hotel
Canada is in the process of evacuating government felt the situation was
its three-member mobile laboratory
team from Sierra Leone over concerns
for the safety of the scientists.
The Public Health Agency of Canada
said late Tuesday that the team is being
recalled to Canada after people at the
hotel complex where they were staying
were diagnosed with Ebola.
The agency did not elaborate on who
the people were and why the federal

significant enough to require that the

scientists be brought back to Canada.
The agency did say the Canadians had
no contact with the sick individuals
and are not themselves showing signs
of illness. But the three will remain
in voluntary isolation and will be
closely monitored on their trip back
to Canada and after their return to the
country.

There is a new sandy beach by the

Fraser River in New Westminster, B.C.,
but visitors cannot swim in the water.
The beach on Timber Wharf at
Westminster Pier Park is between three
and four metres above the water.
"To get down to the water level would
have been cost-prohibitive for us,"
says Dean Gibson, New Westminster's
director of parks, culture and recreation.
"And secondly, that section of the river
has a very, very fast running current.
In the interests of public safety, it
was better for us to retain the existing
condition which kept that physical
separation between the water and the
general public."
Still popular with families
Even though they cannot dip their toes
in the water, and the fine sand is only
about 30 centimetres deep, several
locals have already embraced the
beach as a popular spot to relax with
their families.
"I think it'll be a nice place for families
to come and just relax, get away from
the humdrum of the city," says Jill
Parpatt.
Melissa Fiorucci has taken to the beach
wholeheartedly, staking a spot with a
blanket, and soaking up the sun in a
bikini.

"I wouldn't probably want to swim

in this water anyway," she says, "It's
nice to just be out, lay down, get
comfortable, and have good views, and
you get the wonderful breeze off the
water. So you can't complain, really."
"We like it a lot," says fellow
beachgoer Marco Alucema, "Because
the volleyball courts get really busy
around five or six in the evening. We
come here about that time.
"Now this urban [beach] is more for
the kids, so they get to play here, play
football, play in the sand and all that.
So it's really good."
"My daughter is just two, and we live
here in New Westminster, and we've
discovered this beautiful park. We've
been down here every day," Melanie
Flint says.
"With her only being two, going to the
actual beach is a really long destination,
so for us to walk here, it's perfect."
Comparisons with Paris?
There are other examples of beaches
like this, says Gibson.
"In Paris, they have the Paris Plage.
Every summer, they convert a section
of their waterfront highway into this
long linear beach area, and it's been
wildly successful for a number of
years."

Ottawa Urged To Remove Citizenship By Birth On

Canadian Soil

Officials recommend Ottawa removing citizenship rights to babies born to non-citizens and non-residents even though costs outweigh benefits.
Immigration
officials
have
recommended that Ottawa remove
citizenship rights to babies born in
Canada to non-citizens and nonresidents even though the small number
of cases doesnt justify the costs.
The proposal, marked secret and
with inputs from various federal
departments, found fewer than 500
cases of children being born to
foreign nationals in Canada each year,
amounting to just 0.14 per cent of the
360,000 total births per year in the
country.
The issue of citizenship by birth
on Canadian soil once again raises
concerns among critics over the current
governments policy considerations
being based on ideologies rather than
evidence and objective cost-benefit
analyses.
An impartial observer would conclude
that the evidence supports no need
for change, given the small number
of cases. Yet the recommendation
supports the governments public
rhetoric and anecdotes on the need
for change, said Andrew Griffith, a
former director general for citizenship
and multiculturalism at Citizenship
and Immigration Canada, and author
of Policy Arrogance or Innocent Bias.
The
Conservative
government
overhauled the Canadian Citizenship
Act earlier this year by further
restricting eligibility. However, the
birth on soil provision was left intact
and required further studies.
Eliminating birth on soil in order
to ensure that everyone who obtains
citizenship at birth has a strong connection
to Canada would have significant cost
implications, said the 17-page report
prepared for former immigration minister
Jason Kenney, obtained under an access
to information request.
The challenge of communicating
this change would be convincing the
public that restricting the acquisition
of Canadian citizenship is worth that
cost, particularly in a climate of deficit
reduction.
The office of Chris Alexander,
Kenneys successor, confirmed with
the Star that the government is still
reviewing citizenship policy with

regard to the issue of birth tourism

a term referring to foreigners travelling
to give birth in Canada so the baby can
claim automatic citizenship here.
Dubbed anchor babies, these children
are eligible to sponsor their foreign
parents to Canada once they turn 18. It
is unknown how many of them actually
return to their birth country with their
parents, but its believed the number is
low.
As provinces and territories are
responsible for birth registration,
consultation and co-ordination with
the provinces is required, said Alexis
Pavlich, a spokesperson for Alexander.
Canadian citizenship is an honour
and a privilege, and our Conservative
government is committed to increasing
its value. Birth tourism undermines the
integrity of our citizenship program
and takes advantage of Canadian
generosity.
Currently Canada and the United
States are the only countries to have
birth on soil provisions. The United
Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand
and most European countries restrict
citizenship by birth on soil to children
born to parents who are either citizens
or permanent residents.
The potential costs . . . of enforcing
this provision, the potential challenges
with children being born stateless in

Canada and the uncertainty of their

status may outweigh the benefits linked
to limiting citizenship by birth on soil,
said the government report, which also
suggested that the number of anchor
babies could be underestimated.
Discussions with CBSA (Canada
Border Services Agency) have
indicated that limiting citizenship by
birth on soil would likely impact the
removals program. It could be more
challenging to remove families which
have a child born in Canada in terms of
getting access to travel documents for
that child, regardless of whether or not
the child is stateless.
With input from the Department of
Justice, Passport Canada, Foreign
Affairs, CBSA and Public Safety, the
report suggested Ottawa could issue
proof of citizenship to persons born
in Canada or have provinces modify

birth certificates to indicate citizenship

status.
Nevertheless,
it
recommended
the removal of the birth rights by
suggesting there may be some
support for a restrictive policy despite
the significant operational and cost
implication for Citizenship and
Immigration Canada.
In the 1990s, the then Liberal
government also toyed with the idea of
removing citizenship as a birth right but
was met with public opposition, and a
letter campaign to then immigration
minister Lucienne Robillard opposing
the plan was launched.
Canada has signed international
conventions that commit us not to
make people stateless. There is a very
real risk that some children will be
stateless as a result of this proposed
change, said the letter signed on by
more than 230 national organizations.
A move to end automatic citizenship
for babies sends xenophobic messages
to the public, the letter said. Such
a legislative change would send
a message to newcomers about
whose children count and whose
children are not welcome. It would
reinforce feelings of exclusion and
marginalization making integration
even more difficult.
Reached regarding Ottawas renewed
attempt to change the law, Janet Dench
of the Canadian Council for Refugees
said, Citizenship by birth in Canada
is an important part of the Canadian
identity and makes us a better society.
When the previous government
suggested changing that principle in the
1990s, we found that many Canadians
agreed with us that it was a bad idea. It
is still a bad idea.

It will be anywhere from two to eight

weeks before that collapsed pavement
is fixed on Highway 99, south of the
Oak Street Bridge.
Looks like a culvert collapsed
underneath the highway causing the
highway itself to collapse, says
Sergeant Lorne Lecker with the Deas

It starts at about eight to 10 inches

low on the grass side and comes up to
grade, but its about five feet wide by
about three feet long, he describes.
The Transportation Ministry says it

The province claims this can happen

Foods That Can Cause Food Poisoning

Much maligned as the number
one excuse for missing work, food
poisoning is a real phenomenon.
It can lead to diarrhea, nausea,
vomiting or cramping within 48 hours
of consuming any contaminated food
or drink. In some unfortunate cases, it
can be life threatening too. Yes, food
poisoning is no pretty sight. But, are
you aware of which foods to be weary
of to avoid food poisoning? They lurk
everywhere. Here's a quick list of foods
that can cause food poisoning if you
don't take care of how you consume
them...

that it's refrigerated well, and cooked

thoroughly. Also, attempting raw tuna
dishes without being sure of how and
where the fish came from is dubious.

Oysters.

Tuna.

Some people can be allergic to berries

while others might be fond of berries to
the extent that they don't mind eating
frozen berries - and that is where the

Oysters and other shellfish in general

are seen as potent food poisoning
threats that could catch you completely
unaware. The quality of the water in
which they breed has a lot to do with
this phenomenon. If the water they are
filtering on is polluted, then chances
are the oysters are contaminated. Food
poisoning caused by shellfish can lead
to symptoms like vomiting, fever,
diarrhea, amongst others. Take care
to buy them for well-established and
clean sources.

Potatoes.

Food poisoning from potatoes is very

rare, but not impossible since raw
potatoes can sometimes be of a 'wild'
variety that contains toxins to ward off
predators. Most breeders control this
toxicity in potatoes, but even farmed
potatoes could turn green, change
colour and display properties of being
contaminated. Cooking at high heats
takes care of these toxins, which is
why you must be weary of the potato's
colour and texture before adding it in a
raw state to any food.

Cheese.
Tuna can be contaminated with
scombrotoxin, which can lead to
cramps and headaches. Make certain
that tuna is kept cool (on ice) after being
caught because if it gets too hot it can
release toxins, which will be difficult
to kill by cooking. Undercooked tuna
is also cause for concern. To avoid
food poisoning from tuna, ensure

germ called Cyclospora lurks, which is

an easy cause of cramps, dehydration
and diarrhea. Cyclospora can be present
in all kind of berries strawberries,
raspberries, and blackberries.

Berries.

Eggs.

This in no way applies to all eggs. As

with other foods, sometimes eggs can
be contaminated by certain harmful
bacteria - Salmonella being the most
dangerous. If you consume a raw
egg that is infected, you could show
symptoms of severe food poisoning.
To prevent this - always buy eggs from
a clean and credible store, wash mildly
and store in a refrigerator as soon as
you get home. Always cook eggs well
before consuming them, and ensure
that you resort to proper medication at
the first instance of any food poisoning
symptoms.

Cheese can easily be contaminated

with bacterias such as Salmonellaor
Listeria, which can, in very extreme and
rare cases also lead to miscarriages. No
wonder, pregnant women are advised
to stay away from cheese varieties such
as blue-veined, camembert, brie and
feta. Make sure you are not purchasing
lose cheese from the market. Always
go for branded sealed packed cheese,
and do check for its expiry date.

India's Kerala State Plans

To Ban Alcohol Sales

Authorities in the southern Indian state

of Kerala have outlined plans to ban
the sale and consumption of alcohol to
tackle the state's drink problem.
The first phase of the ban would see
more than 700 bars and as well as some
shops selling alcohol shut down, with
more alcohol-free days introduced.
The government aims to enforce total
prohibition in 10 years.
Kerala has India's highest per capita
alcohol consumption at more than
eight liters per person yearly.
Doctors and activists have highlighted
rising alcohol abuse, blaming it for
many road accidents and even marital
breakdown. They say hospitals and
rehabilitation centers are packed with
patients suffering from alcohol-related
diseases.
Chief Minister Oomnen Chandy said
the Congress-led government planned
to make Kerala "liquor free" with a
series of proposed measures in the

coming months:
A total of 730 bars serving alcohol will
be shut.
Sundays will be added to existing
alcohol-free days on the first day of
every month
Only luxury hotels will be allowed to
serve alcohol from next year.
10% of the 338 liquor shops owned
by a state-run monopoly will be shut
every year.
"The state should be prepared to accept
total prohibition within this period [of
10 years]," he said.
Correspondents say businesses are
worried that the proposed ban may hit
tourism in the state. Kerala is the state
which attracts the highest number of
tourists in India.
Nor is it clear how the government plans
to recover lost earnings from alcohol
sales, which by one estimate accounts
for more than 20% of revenues in the
state's annual budget.

after abusing their four-monthold daughter so badly that she had
hemorrhaging in her eyes.
Police have arrested 26-year-old
Michael Knott and 23-year-old Andi
Suddarth after they brought their
daughter to the hospital. The hospital
contacted the police because the girl
had severe brain injuries, blood on her
brain, and hemorrhaging in her eyes.
According to reports, the couple says
they have no idea how the girl was
injured but investigators believe the
injuries were sustained in February
when she was just one month old.
Police say the extent of the injuries
may not be clear until the girl is two
years old.
Hancock Country Sheriffs Department
Capt. Jeff Rasche said: It was
definitely consistent with injuries that

were inflected onto the child and not

something that just happened to it.
Suddarth has been charged with two
counts of felony neglect while Knott is
charged with a count of child neglect.
The childs great-grandparents have
been given custody.
Rasche adds no one else is here to
speak for the child, hopefully we have.
Knott took to Facebook to defend
himself, writing: Everyone running
your mouth about this situation go
ahead, my beautiful little girl isnt
blind, shes doing great shes laughing
cooing, eating, and deff not blind.
Everything will show in time that
none of this is true. You all keeping
running your mouths in the end you
will all be proven idiots. Everyone
that is supporting us and sending US
prayers thank you from the bottom of
my heart!

Child Care Worker Stepped On Dead Toddler

A CHILD care worker allegedly went shopping after killing a toddler by stepping on him three times in what she described as a wrestling match.
A 12-year-old neighbour claimed he
bumped into Skeeter on her return and
offered to help carry her bags.
Isliel Hayward-Barnes told the Daily
News when he entered the babysitters
apartment he saw the body of the dead
toddler, who appeared to have tape on
his mouth and scrapes on his face and
head.
Tragically, father Carlyle Williamson
who had been accessing free day
care as part of a back-to-work program

told the New York Daily News he

had been looking for a new child care
provider as he had found bruises on his
childs body.
I just didnt feel comfortable leaving
him in the care of this person, but you
have to comply with the rules to be a
part of the back-to-work program, he
told the New York Daily News.
Skeeter has been remanded in custody
after being charged with manslaughter
and endangering the welfare of a child.

A JUDGE in Wyoming has sentenced

a 75-year-old Missouri woman to life
in prison for killing her husband with a
rifle in the mid-1970s and throwing his
body down the shaft of an abandoned
gold mine, where it remained for nearly
40 years.
Defendant Alice Uden sobbed gently
as she addressed the court about the
death of her third husband, Ronald
Holtz, then 25.
Ive tried to atone for it, Alice Uden
said. I wish that I never would have
met him so that none of this ever
would have happened. He was a very
frightening man.
Jurors in Cheyenne didnt buy Udens
argument that she shot Holtz in the head
to defend her daughter, a toddler at the
time, from him. In May, they found her
guilty of second-degree murder.
Uden killed Holtz in late 1974 or early
1975 in Cheyenne, where he was living
with her and her two-year-old daughter.
Uden testified that she shot him with a

rifle after he flew into a rage over the

girls crying and was inches away from
attacking her in bed.
Laramie County District Court Judge
Steven Sharpe said he considered
possible mitigating factors, including
Udens lack of prior criminal history.
This was very much a cold, calculated
murder, Sharpe said. The jury heard
all of the evidence that was before the
court and the jury rejected the defence
that it was self-defence.
District Attorney Scott Homar argued
the killing was a thoughtful, deliberate
act that rid Uden of Holtz.
Her way out was to take Mr. Holtzs
life while he was sleeping and then
dispose of it in a way that it wouldnt
be found for 39 and a half years,
Homar said.
Police arrested Uden and her fourth
and current husband, Gerald Uden,
72, both of Chadwick, Missouri, last
autumn, accusing them of killing
former spouses in separate attacks.

Strong 6.0-Magnitude Quake Hits Northern California

Injuring Dozens And Damaging Historic Buildings In Napa

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake has

rocked parts of northern California,
injuring dozens of people, damaging
historic buildings and setting some
homes on fire.
The biggest quake in the region in 25
years jolted many residents out of bed
when it hit at 3:20am (8:20pm AEST),
centered 10 kilometres south of the city
of Napa.
Three people were seriously injured,
including a child who suffered multiple
fractures after a fireplace fell on him,
local officials said.
The US Geological Survey (USGS)
issued an orange alert for possible
damage - a rating which means
"significant damage is likely and the
disaster is potentially widespread".
"They say it went for 50 seconds. It felt
like 50 minutes. I was just too terrified
to even scream," said antique store
owner Patricia Trimble, 50.

Ms Trimble rushed to her store in central

Napa and found the front window
blown out, cabinets on their sides and
merchandise littering the floor.
One local hospital said it had treated 89
patients following the earthquake.
There were no reports of fatalities but
the quake shook up residents, said
Barry Martin, community outreach
coordinator for Napa, which has a
population of around 77,000.
"This was a pretty big jolt in Napa, but it
certainly is not the big one," Mr Martin
said, referring to fears Californians
have of a catastrophic quake.
California, which sits along a series of
seismic faults, is forecast to experience a
much more powerful earthquake at some
point, but scientists do not know when it
will come or how strong it will be, USGS
geophysicist Don Blakeman said.
"Usually when people talk about the big
one, they're talking about something on

the order of a magnitude 9, which of

course is tremendously more powerful"
than Sunday's quake, he said.
California governor Jerry Brown
declared a state of emergency, putting
all state resources at the disposal of his
Office of Emergency Services.
Most damage appeared centered
around Napa, a famous wine-producing
region and a major tourist destination
in northern California.
One hard-hit building housing winery
tasting rooms had to be closed to
tourists and the floors of many wine
stores were stained red from the
contents of broken wine bottles.
Resident says she was 'too terrified to
even scream'
Brick facades gave way in the historic
section of downtown Napa, and bricks
fell off a second floor corner of the
courthouse, which showed cracks. On
the main street, masonry collapsed

onto a car.
The quake also knocked out power to
about 40,000 homes and businesses
in Napa and neighbouring cities of
Sonoma, St Helena and Santa Rosa.
It was the largest to hit the area since
the Loma Prieta quake in 1989, which
killed 63 people and caused $US6
billion in property damage. That quake
measured 6.9, while the famous one
that leveled San Francisco in 1906
measured 7.8.
The quake was followed by small
aftershocks of about magnitude 2, USGS
geophysicist Randy Baldwin said.
He said there was about a 50 per cent
chance there would be an aftershock
of at least magnitude 5 within the next
week.
"That's the thing people need to worry
about if their house is already damaged,
because magnitude 5 can cause more
problems," he said.

Damage to a downtown building is seen after a 6.0 earthquake rocked Napa, north of San Francisco, California early Sunday.

Chef Peng Fan Killed By Snake Bite After He Chopped

Off Cobras Head
A CHEF was killed after he was bit by the severed head of a snake that he was preparing for a dish.

Peng Fan had chopped the head off

the Indochinese spitting cobra, a
delicacy in Asia, to make a snake
soup.
Around 20 minutes later he was tossing
it in the rubbish when the snakes head
bit him, injecting him with its lethal
venom, as reported.
Restaurant guests reported hearing
screams from the kitchen.
The chef from Shunde, a district in

the city of Foshan in southern Chinas

Guangdong province, was rushed to
hospital but died before he could be
given an anti-venom.
A police spokesman called it a highly
unusual case.
He said: There was nothing that could
be done to save the man. Only the antivenom could have helped but this was
not given in time. It was just a tragic
accident.

Your Child And Alcohol

At some point, most likely well before
he turns 21, your child will have to
make a choice about whether to drink
alcohol. Your role as a parent is to
prepare him. But first, prepare yourself
by learning the facts.
Dont Assume Your Child Wont Try
Alcohol
10% of eighth graders say they drank
alcohol in the past month.
39% of high school seniors say they
drank alcohol in the past month.
Young drinkers are more likely do
risky things. When kids age 12 to 20
drink, they often binge (having five
or more drinks in a row.) The earlier a
young person starts, the more they tend
to binge drink. That raises the chances
theyll hurt themselves or others.
Binge drinking can also slow down the
development of the part of the brain
that controls judgment. Normally, it
keeps forming until were about 25
years old. Thats why teens so often act
on impulse.
Can You Teach Your Child to Drink
Responsibly?
If youre right there with your child to
supervise, it will be OK, right?
Not really. It may seem like a good
idea, but research strongly indicates
the longer you keep your kid from
drinking, the better.
Theres no evidence to show letting
your underage child drink alcohol at
home leads to responsible drinking.
And indulging at an earlier age
raises risks of alcohol problems, like
alcoholism. Kids who drink before age
15 are four times more likely to have
addiction problems as an adult than

those who wait until theyre 21.

Talk to Your Kids About Alcohol
Building a trusting relationship is key
to teaching kids about responsible
drinking. That helps them refuse
alcohol, gain confidence, resist peer
pressure, and know your expectations.
Show your child she can talk to you
about anything. Shell listen. It may
not always seem so, but parents have a
lot of influence on kids behavior.
Get involved in your childs life. Know
his friends and his whereabouts. Spend
time with him daily.
If you drink, model healthy behavior.
Dont say you need to after a bad day.
Dont do it excessively, and never
drink and drive.
Show your child other ways to relax,
like exercise or music.
Use natural opportunities to start
conversations, like when a beer
commercial comes on or when
someone at a restaurant drinks.
Be clear that underage drinking is not
OK. Getting that message from their
parents is the main reason kids say no
to it.
Have your child practice saying no
through role-playing, brainstorming, or
just chatting.
Give information fitting your childs
maturity. Talk about alcohol dangers.
Use short, simple comments and repeat
them.
Give an older kid more specifics about
alcohols effects and how it impacts
your decision-making.
Talk about peer pressure. Help her
recognize that good friends dont push
you to drink.

How To Deal With Your Parents

Shouting At You

Are your parents yelling.

This is the safest, and most beneficial
in the long run, in addition to being
100% guaranteed to work at you at all
the time? Don't worry. Remain calm.
Just read this article.
1. Change your behavior. Before
yelling is necessary, change your
behavior so your parents approve of it.
2. Acknowledge why they're shouting
at you. Know and admit that you did
something wrong. Even though you
might not think so, look at it from your
parent's point of view. Maybe they do
not understand why you have done
whatever they are mad about.
3. Don't back talk. The urge to snap
back at your parents while they are
yelling can be almost unbearable, but
don't do it. This will only make them
angrier and make the situation worse.
Keep your comments to yourself.

Instead, listen to what they're saying

and respond accordingly.
4. Remain calm. Don't get angry. More
anger is not what the situation needs.
Instead, take a few deep breaths.
Regain control of yourself.
5. Attempt to explain the situation
from your point of view. Be polite and
apologize. Be sincere, even if you don't
think you did anything wrong.
6. Above all, remember - everybody's
parents get mad at them every once in
a while. It's not the end of the world.
Understand that your parents are just
doing the best they can because they
love you.
7. Don't mimic them even if you think
they're out of earshot.
8. Don't concentrate on the
conversation, keep your eyes fixed
on the parent but use your peripheral
vision.
9. Always tell the truth.

Cancer - Breaking The Bad News To Patients

For Dr Ranjana Srivastava, who began
working as an oncologist in Australia
10 years ago, breaking the news to
patients suffering from cancer is part
of the job.
"A doctor must be able to read a patient
in order to break bad news. I ensure
they have at least one close family
member present when I tell them. This
way, the patient has another pair of
ears as well as support after I leave the
room," she says.
Srivastava's decision to be a cancer
specialist, she says, was influenced
by her experience of watching her
grandmother, who was diagnosed
with cancer, slip into a coma and pass
away. She was 10 at the time. While
the family consulted a reputed doctor
in Bhagalpur, Bihar, where she grew
up, they were given little information
about the disease or what the patient
would go through. "I wish that the
oncologist had held my Nanima's hand
and told her what to expect," she says.
In her book Tell me the truth;
conversations with my patients about
cancer, life and death (published by
Harper Element), Srivastava uses real

patient experiences to discuss how

different patients deal with the news
and how families can cope.
The C-word: According to the World
Cancer Report from the World Health
Organisation (WHO), nearly seven
lakh Indians die of cancer every
year, while over 10 lakh are newly
diagnosed with some form of the
disease. While doctors are consumed
by growing queues in hospital waiting
rooms, and the churn of diagnosis and
treatment, in most cases, patients are
left with inadequate knowledge of their
condition.
In many cases, patients have a hint
about the disease while going through
the tests. The prolonged wait to be
diagnosed only adds to the stress.
Srivastava prefers to tell a patient that
she needs to discuss serious news and
suggests calling in a family member. It's
important to be prompt in organising
such a meeting, she says.
"Cancer is a frightening term and
countless patients have said that once
they hear the word, they are incapable
of processing anything more. So, I
keep the initial discussion short until

the patient has gained some control of

their thoughts," she says.
There are many patients, who want
to protect their family, and insist on
hearing the news alone, Srivastava
ensures her staff or a social worker
is present to talk to the patient. "This
doesn't mean that they will never want
their family involved; often it's a matter
of time before they let others in," she
explains.
Focus on facts: Not all cancer is
terminal, especially when the disease is
caught in the early stages. "It is vital to
inform and educate patients about their
particular cancer, available treatment
and outcomes," says Srivastava. A large
part of her job, she reveals, includes
listening to patients who are simply left
feeling vulnerable and overwhelmed.
Families go through a particularly
hard conundrum. They feel bad for the
patient but don't know how to help, she
says. Part of her role is also to speak
with families about how they can best
help the patient.
Ask Questions: The initial shock,
patients have revealed, leaves them
with a lot of questions but they are
unable to articulate them. It's important
to tell patients to expect this. Srivastava
advises them to write down questions
as they come up.
No question is too small or simple to
ask, reiterates Srivastava.
"Never be afraid of sounding silly or
uneducated in front of your doctor.
Cancer is a highly specialised field
and many experts in the profession
also aren't able to fully understand
the workings of the human body," she
offers to families seeking answers. If
you are unable to understand medical
terms, ask the doctor to simplify it in

plain language.
If you are a web junkie, be careful not
to trust all the information you find
online. Srivastava suggests taking
along the research to clarify it with a
doctor.
Dealing with pain: When it comes to
palliative care, an area of medicine
that deals with controlling pain and
ensuring comfort of the patient when
a disease is not curable, Srivastava's
focus includes dealing with anxiety
and emotions as well.
For many patients, home-based
palliative care is suitable, where
trained workers monitor symptoms and
provide advice under the supervision
of doctors. Patients who are too ill to
be managed at home or whose complex
symptoms require closer attention may
be admitted to an in-patient hospice for
stabilisation or end-of-life care.
Barriers to palliative care remain with
a lack of awareness and availability of
facilities. "When people believe that
palliative care equates to just letting
a patient die, it is natural to avoid
discussing it and even being against
such care. But the focus is on making
sure the patient lives with dignity,"
explains Srivastava.
In Melbourne, Srivastava conducts
a communication workshop for
healthcare professionals on dealing
with patients. Key notes include;
talk less, listen more; be comfortable
in silence; look for and respond to
emotion; and avoid information
overload.
Her efforts are to allow an open doctorpatient relationship. She says, "It is
fundamental to cancer treatment, which
relies not only on medications but also
on human touch which is vital."

Radiation therapy for prostate
cancer
Radiation therapy uses high-energy
rays or particles to destroy cancer cells.
Radiation may be used for prostate
cancer:
-as the primary treatment to destroy
cancer cells
-after surgery to destroy cancer cells
left behind and to reduce the risk of the
cancer recurring (adjuvant radiation
therapy)
-after surgery if the cancer comes back
around the area where the prostate
gland was (salvage radiation therapy)
-to relieve pain or to control the
symptoms of advanced prostate cancer
(palliative radiation therapy)
The amount of radiation given during
treatment, and when and how it is
given, will be different for each person.
External beam radiation therapy
Prostate cancer is usually treated with
external beam radiation therapy. A
machine directs radiation to the tumour
and some of the surrounding tissue.
External beam radiation treatment
may be offered to men as a primary
treatment.
It is given after surgery (adjuvant
radiation) if the tumour had spread
close to or into the outer covering of
the prostate.
It may be given for stage IV prostate
cancer to relieve urinary symptoms
caused by the tumour or to relieve pain
caused by bone metastases.
Brachytherapy
Brachytherapy is internal radiation
therapy. A radioactive material
(radioactive isotope) is placed right
into the tumour. The radiation kills the
cancer cells over time.
Multiple radioactive implants are
surgically placed right into the prostate.
This is called interstitial brachytherapy.
Implants can be temporary or
permanent.
Temporary implants are removed
after the desired dose of radiation is
delivered.
Permanent
implants
(such
as
radioactive seeds) are not removed.
They deliver their dose of radiation
over a period of weeks or months.
Brachytherapy is used mainly for
low-risk and intermediate-risk prostate
cancer. Combined external beam
radiation therapy and brachytherapy
may be used for high-risk prostate
cancer.
Hormonal therapy for prostate
cancer
Hormonal therapy is a systemic therapy
that slows the growth and spread of
prostate cancer cells by changing
hormone levels or blocking their
receptors in the body. Hormones are
chemical substances that are produced

Prostate Cancer
by glands in the body or made in a
laboratory. Drugs, surgery or radiation
therapy can be used to change hormone
levels.
Hormonal therapy may be used:
-as the primary treatment for advanced
or recurrent prostate cancer
-after surgery in men with locally
advanced disease to destroy cancer
cells left behind and to reduce the
risk of the cancer recurring (adjuvant
hormonal therapy)
-before, during and after radiation
therapy in men who have high-risk
prostate cancer and in some men with
intermediate-risk disease
-to relieve pain or to control the
symptoms of advanced prostate cancer
(palliative therapy)
The type of hormonal therapy used and
the doses and schedules of drugs vary
from person to person.
Hormone therapy is not a cure, but
70%85% of men receiving hormonal
therapy will respond to the treatment
for a period of time. Eventually, the
response will decrease and the prostate
cancer will begin to grow.
Different strategies are used to give
hormonal therapy:
-early hormonal therapy versus
delayed hormonal therapy The
choice is between starting hormonal
therapy --early before any symptoms
of disease progression are seen or
delaying hormonal treatment until
symptoms are seen. Both early and
delayed androgen deprivation therapy
(ADT) have benefits and risks. There
is no firm evidence to show that one
approach is better than the other.
-intermittent
hormonal
therapy
The hormonal therapy is given
intermittently. The PSA level is used
to monitor the cancer. This approach
is believed to minimize the side effects
of ADT. There is no firm evidence to
show that this is better than continuous
hormonal therapy.
-continuous hormonal therapy ADT
is given continuously. This is the
common hormonal therapy standard.
-total hormonal blockade This
strategy is also called combined
hormonal blockade. In this method,
men are treated with both androgen
deprivation (orchiectomy or an LHRH
agonist) and an anti-androgen. There
is not enough evidence to confirm the
benefit of this approach.
Types of hormonal therapy
The growth of prostate cancer
cells depends on androgens, the
male hormones that cause male
characteristics (such as deep voice and
facial hair). The main androgens are
testosterone and dihydrotestosterone
(DHT). They are produced mostly in
the testicles. Hormonal therapy is used

to block the production or effects of

these hormones. This treatment is also
called androgen deprivation therapy
(ADT).
The most common hormonal therapies
used to treat prostate cancer are:
-luteinizing
hormonereleasing
hormone (LHRH) agonists
-LHRH antagonists
-anti-androgens
-estrogens
-surgery to remove the testicles
(orchiectomy)
-Luteinizing
hormonereleasing
hormone agonists
Luteinizing
hormonereleasing
hormone (LHRH) is produced by the
hypothalamus gland. It stimulates the
pituitary gland to produce luteinizing
hormone (LH), which in turn stimulates
the testicles to produce testosterone.
LHRH agonists are drugs that stimulate
the pituitary gland to produce more LH.
Eventually, the pituitary gland stops
responding to the overstimulation,
and this causes the testicles to stop
producing testosterone. The reduction
in testosterone stops the prostate cancer
cells from growing.
When LHRH agonists are first
taken, they cause a temporary rise in
testosterone that lasts for about a week.
This rise may result in a temporary
worsening of symptoms for those
with locally advanced or advanced
disease, which is called a tumour flare
reaction. During the flare reaction, men
may have more urinary difficulties or
bone pain. The doctor may prescribe
anti-androgens for a period of time to
reduce the symptoms of the flare.
LHRH agonists are given as an
injection. Depending on the drug,
injections are given every month
or every 3 or 4 months. The drug is
continued for the rest of the mans
life, even when the prostate cancer
progresses. It should never be stopped.
The most common LHRH agonists are:
-leuprolide (Lupron, Lupron Depot,
Eligard)
-goserelin (Zoladex)
-buserelin (Suprefact)
-triptorelin (Trelstar)
-Luteinizing
hormonereleasing
hormone antagonists
LHRH antagonists are drugs that block
the pituitary gland from producing
luteinizing hormone (LH). This
causes the testicles to stop producing
testosterone. The reduction in
testosterone stops the prostate cancer
cells from growing.
The LHRH antagonist used to treat
prostate cancer is degarelix (Firmagon).
Anti-androgens
Anti-androgens work by blocking the
effects of testosterone on the prostate
cancer cells. The drug attaches to

androgen receptors on the prostate

cancer cells and prevents them
from using the testosterone in the
bloodstream.
Anti-androgens may be given
for a short time to a man who is
taking LHRH agonists to reduce the
worsening symptoms and pain caused
by these drugs (tumour flare reaction).
Anti-androgens are given by mouth in
pill or liquid form. The most common
types are:
-flutamide (Euflex)
-bicalutamide (Casodex)
-nilutamide (Anandron)
-abiraterone acetate (Zytiga)
-enzalutamide (Xtandi)
If prostate cancer stops responding to
anti-androgens, and the cancer begins
to grow again, anti-androgen therapy
is stopped. In some men, stopping
anti-androgen therapy may cause an
anti-androgen withdrawal response, in
which the prostate cancer shrinks and
the PSA levels drop. The cause of this
response is unknown.
Estrogens
Estrogens are female hormones that
lower the level of androgens. They
are sometimes used when the prostate
cancer stops responding to other
hormone treatments.
Orchiectomy
Orchiectomy is the surgical removal of
the testicles. It is a form of hormonal
therapy. The testicles are the bodys
main sources of testosterone. When
they are removed, 90%95% of the
testosterone in the body is reduced.
Prostate cancer tumours will quickly
shrink when the level of testosterone
drops.
An orchiectomy is a simple procedure:
-Local anesthetic is used to numb the
scrotum.
-The doctor makes a small incision in
the scrotum and removes the testicles.
-The scrotum appears smaller after
surgery.
The advantage of orchiectomy is that
the man does not require frequent
drug injections. The disadvantage
is that most men may feel that the
removal of their testicles makes them
less masculine. Because of this, most
men choose to have their hormonal
therapy given through drugs. The
testicles get much smaller with any
form of hormone therapy, so the actual
appearance of the scrotum is not much
different with surgery or drug therapy.

Shah Rukh Khan And Arjun Rampal To Work Together

If the latest grapevine is true then SRK and his former best buddy will soon share screen space
After signing Shah Rukh Khan and
Kajol for his next directorial venture,
director Rohit Shetty has pulled of
yet another casting coup. We hear the
talented filmmaker has now signed
Arjun Rampal for the film. Now thats
interesting because we all know Khan
and Arjun were best pals at one point
and they even worked together in
RA.One. But since then their equation
has changed a lot and Shah Rukh is no
longer close to the Rajneeti actor. Well,
we dunno how King Khan feels about
this but maybe working with Arjun
again might just rekindle his friendship
with the model-turned-actor.
While talking to a leading daily, a

source said, Rohit has a script and a

role in it that fits Arjun Rampal. Even
though SRK and Arjun are not best
friends, ultimately, everyone works
according to the demands of the script.
If the actors have a problem with each
other, Rohit has nothing to do with it.
But of course he will discuss everything
with SRK.
The untitled film will go on floors
next year however Rohit has already
begun the pre-production work. We
bet this is one film we all cant afford
to miss. After all, its coming together
of Bollywoods most loved onscreen
jodi SRK- Kajol and once-upontime.

Kapil Sharma To Shoot For Abbas-Mustan's Film In

November

Popular stand-up comedian Kapil

Sharma, who is set to make his
Bollywood debut with director duo
Abbas-Mustan's untitled film, is
looking forward to it and says he will
start shooting for the film in November.
"I will start shooting in November for
Abbas-Mustan's film. The title of the
film has not been decided yet," Kapil
told reporters at the music launch of
the film "Marudhar Maro Ghar" where
he was present to support his friend
and colleague, singer Raja Hasan.
Initially, Kapil was to make his debut
with Yash Raj Films' "Bank Chor".
However, due to undisclosed reasons,
he was ousted from the project.

Thereafter, Riteish Deshmukh was

signed for the film.
As of now, Kapil is focusing on his show
"Comedy Nights with Kapil". He is all
set to take his much-loved show overseas
which he will begin with shooting a
special episode in Dubai Sep 5.
"We were thinking what next we can
do with 'Comedy Nights with Kapil',
so we are doing a live show of this in
Dubai," said Kapil, whose popularity
soared following the success of
"Comedy Nights...".
He has bigger plans for it.
"After that we will have a live show in
London, Canada, America, Australia
and New Zealand," he added.

Shaan To Spread Love, Laughs

With Live Concert

Singer Shaan is upbeat about spending

'family time' with a 'Live Love Laugh
Shaan Se' concert, where he will be
performing with his sister Sagarika
Mukherjee and his two sons.
Shaan is happy and nervous about the
performance - especially since it is
after 14 years that he will take to the
stage with his sister, with whom he has
earlier sung many pop hit duets.
"It's more like a family time with this
concert as I will be singing with my
sister after a long time and my sons will
also be singing. So I am very excited
and nervous about this concert," Shaan
said.
Shaan has two sons - Soham, 11,
and Shubh, 9, with his wife Radhika.
They will showcase their inherited
talent alongside Shaan for one of the

segments at the concert.

The concert is dedicated to Bollywood's
singing legends Mohammad Rafi,
Mukesh and Kishore Kumar.
Shaan's wife Radhika is the creative
mind behind the event. He says she has
been asking him to do a live concert for
quite a long time.
"I think this is the right opportunity,"
he said, adding that Radhika is indeed
"the mastermind behind this show".
The concert will take audiences back to
the old and gold era of Bollywood songs
using modern techniques, including an
interactive set-up in the pre-function
area which enables concert attendees
to record videos with their friends,
requesting for their favourites to be
sung by Shaan during the show and
much more.

Om Puri Misses Golden Era Of

Hindi Cinema

Versatile actor Om Puri, who has

maintained just the right balance
between commercial and parallel
cinema, misses the good content on
celluloid and rues that movie-making
is now reduced to just money-making.
"The best films were made in the 1950s and
1960s,` Puri, who has just won accolades
for his work in Hollywood venture `The
Hundred Foot Journey`, expressed his
views during a group interview.
Remembering the era dominated by the
likes of Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and
Dev Anand, the 63-year-old said: `It
was the golden period because subjects
were great, nice meaningful songs
were there... (but) these days people
forget new songs within two months.`
"Cinema was more responsible in the

1950s and 1960s. Cinema has become

irresponsible today and today moviemaking means money-making," he
added.
Although he admits that the industry
is equipped with better technology,
yet stylish and commercial cinema
dominates hard-hitting subjects.
"Of course, some good films are being
made these days, but I feel hard-hitting
films are not really being made, and
most of the films are considered in
terms of business.
"Stylish films are being made,
technically we have developed a lot.
But in terms of subject, the depth has
been reduced," said the actor, known
for his work in films like "Ardh Satya",
"Maachis" and "East is East".

Frank Miller's Sin City: A Dame To Kill For! (PG) ***

Heart Breaker!

By Robert Waldman

Decidedly different but no less

entertaining is the latest effort from
EOne Entertainment suitably titled
Frank Miller's Sin City: A Dame to Die
For. Prepare to be taken to a dark new
world. Check out these rather offbeat
characters at Cineplex Odeon Theatres
around B.C.
Taken from the graphic novels of cult
phenom Frank Miller the second in
what promises to be a series of Sin
City movies delights in the underbelly
of society. Yes, the people that inhabit
this wacky world are indeed hardboiled.
Women mix with strip clubs, gambling
and a host of unsavoury characters.
This time out we really have three
different story lines that ultimately
come together with a woman or two
the centrepiece. Yes, it helps to have
see the first Sin City as people for
the original find themselves in more

trouble.
Not to trot gambler Joseph GordonLevett seems possessed to win at the
tables while dancing phenom Jessica
Alba just wants to avenge her former
confidante, shown in flashbacks to be
Bruce Willis. Caught in the middle of
this crossfire of corruption is Powers
Boothe as a conniving Senator and Josh
Brolin as a loner/loser entrapped and
fixated on a beautiful woman played
buoyantly by Eva Green (Casino
Royale).
Muscle and flesh is in abundance here
as dark-edged fantasy come to life in
impressive work from Dennis Haysbert
as an enforcer and Mickey Rourke (The
Wrestler) as a friend in need. Sexy and
brutal this 106 minute opus is a real
eye-opener not for the timid.
Fear the night and the crazy commotion
served up by Robert Rodriguez in this
dazzling look at the wild side of life.

Tom Hanks, Ron Howard

Confirmed For Sony Pictures'
'Inferno'

Sony Pictures have sealed the deal with

Tom Hanks, Ron Howard and Brian
Grazer for the third installment based
on the Dan Brown novel series, titled
'Inferno.'
While Hanks will reprise his role as
Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon,
Howard would be back on the director's
chair for the project, which would be
scripted by David Koepp, and produced
by Grazer.

In the story, Langdon awakens in an

Italian hospital with amnesia, after
which he teams up with doctor named
Sienna Brooks, in the hopes to regain
his memories and stop a madman from
releasing a global plague connected to
Dante's Inferno.
Sony and Imagine Entertainment
have marked April 2015 in their
calendars to start the project's filming
in Italy.

Celebrity Big Brother To Go To

Mars In 2024

Celebrity Big Brother's bosses have

already struck a deal to take the series
to Mars in 2024.
The TV chiefs want to send 24
housemates to Mars, which will cost
a staggering 4 billion pounds and 704
people have signed up even though they
face eight years of training, as reported.
A Dutch foundation led by businessman
Bas Lansdorp, who is behind the Mars
One project and has already struck a deal
with an offshoot of original Big Brother
firm Endemol, said that they want to send
the first four settlers to Mars in 2024 and

additional teams will follow.

Wind energy entrepreneur Lansdorp
said that the money needed to finance
the mission will come from broadcasting
rights and he is in negotiations with
American company SpaceX to use their
seven-man Dragon V2 space vehicle.
He added that there will be a living
unit for each along with inflatable
greenhouses to grow vegetables. Water
will be extracted from ice particles
from the soil and some of it will be
broken down to provide oxygen, while
solar cells will generate electricity.

'Full House' To Return After

Almost Two Decades?
Popular TV show "Full House" is
reportedly set to return after its season
eight finale aired almost 20 years ago.
"Full House", the hit ABC sitcom, ran
from 1987 to 1995.
A revival of the show has long been
discussed, but it may just be around
the corner with Warner Bros. TV
is considering re-envisaging "Full
House". Also many members of
the original cast are also rumoured

to be reprising their roles, reports

contactmusic.com.
The series, which starred actors such
as John Stamos, Bob Saget and Dave
Coulier, centered on a widower raising
his three children in San Francisco
with help from his family and friends.
"Full House" was cancelled in 1995
after eight seasons because the network
decided the production was becoming
too expensive.

Choose The Right Comb

To Get Healthy Hair
Dr Shah, trichologist shares some tips
about the right combs for your hair. He
advises a wide-toothed wooden comb
is usually ideal for all types and lengths
of hair.
It is really important to take a special
care of your hair and the scalp. For this
reason you need to follow a special
hair care regime which is meant for
your hair and scalp type.
Whereas the external applications type
and frequency varies based on the hair
and scalp type one thing that everyone
should follow uniformly is to use only
wooden comb rightly termed as the
tricomb on their hair and scalp. They
are made up of the rosemary wood and
they are wide-toothed in their nature.
These combs have got certain salient
features in them like...

1. It speed ups the circulation of the

blood of the hair follicles present on
the scalp which helps is rejuvenation

of the scalp.
2. These combs help in preventing the
tangling of the hair to a great extent.
3. These also help in preventing split
ends of the hair.
4. It is a great tool to comb the hard
curly hair which is otherwise very
difficult to deal with.
5. It does not pull the hair too much so
there are less breakages and hair fall.
6. It also does not scratch the scalp too
harshly.
The other thing that one should keep
in mind is that they should comb their
hair at right intervals which means it
should be not too often neither too less.
If you comb your hair less frequently
then they will start tangling leading to
hair fall and breakages. On the other
hand if you comb your hair too often
then it will increase the dryness of the
hair and make the scalp oilier. Ideally
one should comb anything between 3
to 8 times based on the need of the hair.
Another important thing is that the
comb which is used by you should
not be shared with anyone else; also
they have to be cleaned properly after
every use. Your comb also needs to be
replaced regularly as a part of basic
hygiene.
So stay away from unhealthy brushes
and plastic combs and use a widetoothed wooden comb regularly for the
health of your hair and the scalp.

Ways To Understand Your

Woman Better
It takes very little to please a woman - a hug, a smile, a look even at

the right time is all it takes to make things better. Here is a list of little
things that can help a man understand a woman better.
1. It takes very little to please a woman
- a hug, a smile, a look even at the
right time is all it takes to make things
better! And then you say women are
complicated!
2. Women can lie when they need to
and do it rather well. But if you're
clever enough you'll know the
difference in the tone - they'll usually
be unusually nice and sweet to cover
up for the lie! But don't be silly and
doubt her when she happens to just
feel more expressive and affectionate!
That's where your smartness will lie..
in knowing the difference!
3. All women don't like playing mother
to their men, so sit up and take some
responsibility. We too like being the
child every now and then you know.
So don't over-rely on us for domestic
needs, and once in a while do something
special to pamper us too!
4. Don't blame all fights and bad moods
on PMS! Some of us don't have it and
for the ones that do, it's not the only
thing that irritates women. YOU men
too can be the cause sometimes. And
even if it is PMS, saying it's because of
that in the middle of a fight WILL NOT
help! I would suggest stay mum, and
we'll probably realise it later anyway!
5. Women never dress well for just their
own man, they do it for all the eyes in
the room (including the women!). So
beware when your girl's all decked up,
she might just be more happy getting
someone else's attention! The only
thing you can do is give her the most

attention, so she doesn't have the scope

to look elsewhere!
6. We can be really 6. We can be really
messy too so don't expect us to clean
up after you. And anyways, lacey bras
and thongs lying around the room are
more pleasing to the eyes than dirty
boxers and y-fronts!
7. We need some major alone and
me-time too! So if you have your boy
escapade-trips, we girls have our own
too! And it's really not necessary for
us to travel in a huge gang of girls.
We can just take off alone! Makes the
world seem more interesting that way
and more chances of adventure! Haha!
8. We do seem to have some strange
inexplicable attraction to men who
are labeled 'bad', 'unavailable' or 'not
meant for us'. Not our fault that it's
only these men who seem to have more
to offer in terms of personality and
wicked charm!
9. If you wait a week or more to text us
once you have our number, you better
have an interesting story to back up for
your laziness like skiing in Vermont
or backpacking across the Pyrenees.
Nothing else will qualify. Once you
have our number, we expect a courtesy
call or text message right away.
10. We've heard that guys like girls who
aren't ashamed to eat and drink well in
front of them. So unless we have mayo
dribbling down our chin or have drunk
way too much to do anything expect
throw-up, why would you judge us by
our weight? Be and let be.

Common Lies Women Tell

Women often lie in order to not hurt or
save a situation in their relationships
with men. We bring you some of the
common lies they tell.
Women many a times feel that if
they want to avoid confrontations or
arguments they should lie so that things
don't get out of proportion. The most
popular lies they often indulge in are:
1. I was not waiting for your call.
2. I really like you but I don't know
when the transition to love will happen.
3. If I wanted to sleep with anyone
right now, it would only be you.
4. I think we should share the bill. You
don't have to always treat me.
5. I have truly never realized that I

would like this so much.

6. Sex is great fun.
7. It's all right even if the guy is bald
and not good-looking, at least he is
rich. Will be able to live a secure life.
8. I don't want to get possessive and I
will never nag you.
9. You are the only one I ever wanted.
10. If I don't go out with him, he will
find someone else.
11. No, nothing wrong with you, I
think I am wrong somewhere!
12. I get along best with my in-laws,
after all they are family.
13. Yes, if you want to be friends, I
don't mind I was also thinking of the
same thing. Why complicate things?

Coping With Unemployment

Al Kamal, MBA
Arza Employment Serv Ltd
On a daily basis you check your email
to see if your sixteen different job
search agents returned that dream job.
You send your resume to at least five
positions a day. Heck, you even look
in the Sunday newspaper! The media
tells us that the economic recovery
has begun. Companies are hiring.
People are optimistic. Yet you are still
unemployed. (BC added 42000 jobs
last month)
If youre out of work, particularly if
youve been looking for a job for quite
some time, it's easy to get discouraged.
After all we define ourselves so much
by what we do. How many minutes
after you meet someone for the first
time, do you ask him or her, "so what
do you do for a living?"
Even those that support you, family
and friends, can unintentionally create
problems. How many times as a job
seeker have you heard, "so, have you
found anything yet?" If youve been
unemployed a while, its easy to take
that the wrong way.
The purpose of this article is to give
ideas on how to create a great attitude
that can help you cope with being
unemployed and set the stage for job
search success.
1.
Budget
Now that may sound fairly obvious,
but you need to understand what your
expenses are and how you can control
them. Do you really need two ISPs?
Can you really watch all those channels
on premium cable? Or how about that
daily double decaf soy latte down
at Starbucks? You need to prioritize
where you are spending your money.
There are certain expenses you may
not be able to control such as rent or a
house note. But for expenses like credit
card debt, examine your statement to
see if you ever automatically signed up
for a payment protection plan. Chances
are your credit card company may have
enrolled you, if your balance has been
over a certain amount. Take advantage
of that, many of those plans will allow
you to suspend payments temporarily.
The key to a budget is to put it on
paper. Whether you create an Excel

spreadsheet or scribble it on a note

pad, having something that you can
look at and change is a great help in
developing a budget that will last.
2.
Routine
What does being employed really do
for us? Besides a paycheck, it gives us
a schedule. Being unemployed should
not be different. You should stick to the
same pattern you had when you were
working. Resist the nightly temptation
to watch Leno and get plenty of sleep
instead.
During the week, actually set your
alarm clock. Pick a time to get up
and get ready as if you were going to
work. Does that mean you need to put
on business professional clothes? Not
necessarily, but hey, if it helps keep
you focused then why not.
Being ready for work every day means
that you can respond to an interview
request quickly. Also, by keeping
a schedule, you will have an easier
time transitioning back to the work
world. And you wont scare your new
co-workers by looking like a sleepdeprived zombie your first week on the
job.
3.
Exercise
If youve been unemployed for any
length of time, youve probably become
use to wearing your sweats or some
other sort of casual clothes. Funny,
when you go to that interview, your
suit feels a little tight. Although you
wish you could blame your dry cleaner
for shrinking your best interview suit,
you know you cant.
You dont have to join a gym. You can
exercise by taking a walk in a nearby
park Regular exercise and consistently
eating right can help make sure that
interview suit fits a little better. But
its the added bonus of staying healthy
during a stressful period in your life,
thats most important.
4.
Keep informed
Whether you read the paper, surf the
Internet, or frequent your local library,
challenge yourself to learn about what
is going on in the world. At the very
least make sure you keep current on
business trends. Being unemployed
means that you need to be keenly
aware of factors that are affecting
the marketplace, especially in your
industry.
Doing research can give you ideas on
what industries are growing and what
companies are hiring. And you will
also be able to engage in the small
talk that often precedes an interview.
5.
Volunteer
When youre working, you always say
to yourself, "I think this organization or
cause is worthwhile and I should really
help out." Perhaps while you were
working you helped with your money,
now you can help with your time.
Becoming a volunteer should be a
commitment that will last beyond
your unemployment. So examine it
seriously, before you decide to do
it. Most organizations that rely on

volunteer help will welcome anyone,

no matter how much time he or she
donates. But again, explore carefully
how you can contribute during your
unemployment and then what you can
do after you start to work again.
Besides being a wonderful networking
opportunity, it is great to have that
sense of accomplishment..
6.
Support Groups
No matter how well meaning your
wife, husband, parents, in-laws, or
friends are, if they arent unemployed,
they will find it hard to understand
what its like to be out of work. Thats
not to suggest that their support is not
needed or welcomed, but sometimes
you need to seek out others who are
also unemployed.
This idea may seem overly dramatic
and some folks may not need it and
thats okay. For those that do just
remember to start simple. If there were
other people that were laid off from
your company, call them first. Check in
on them. Find out how theyre doing. If
you think it would be worthwhile to get
together, then do it.
Some people you encounter will be
negative, frustrated by their lack of
success in finding work, they will likely

try and infect you with their bad attitude.

The long-term value outweighs the risk
since this can be another networking
opportunity. After all a job that might
not be a fit for them, may be for you
and vice-a-versa. And it is reassuring
to know that theres another person or
group of people going through what
youre going through.
7.
Entertainment
Yes thats right, entertainment!
You need to find a way to have fun.
Whether its reading a book, playing
a game, or watching TV, you need to
work at making sure that some form of
entertainment is part of your week.
Looking for work is a full-time job.
Like any job, you need to have a break.
So dont short change yourself and feel
guilty about goofing off every once in
a while.
Whether its managing your budget or
planning something fun, the goal is to
keep you focused. Without that focus it
is easy to get discouraged.
The bottom line in keeping a positive
attitude while youre unemployed is to
remember the bigger picture. People
get interviews because their skills
match the job requirements. People get
jobs because they have great attitudes.

Every now and then you encounter

someone who demonstrates excellence
on the job. It might be an exceptional
waitress who anticipates your every
need or a manager who generates both
high performance and loyalty on his
teams. It could be a teacher with a knack
for unlocking the desire to learn in each
student. Excellence, true excellence, is
something we prize but seldom see.
Its a joy to encounter someone who
is truly excellent at what they do. Why
is that so rare? More importantly, how
can you become known as a man or
woman who consistently demonstrates
excellence?
One comment that is heard time and
again about those who demonstrate
excellence is, "He/she is a natural at
it." They dont seem to struggle to be
excellent; it just flows. That is always
a sign of motivation, and therein lies
the first key: Motivation is required for
excellence.
Motivation is what we like do well
naturally. Its like being right or lefthanded. We dont even think about
it. We just write. The same is true for
people known for excellence. They
have a group of motivations that work

in concert to help them perform at

a higher level. Like all motivations,
these were inborn and are as much a
part of them as being blue-eyed or tall.
But there is a second key: Motivation
can be developed. People who
demonstrate excellence have identified
their motivations and worked hard
to develop them. They have added
knowledge, skill, experience and
practice to consistently produce at the
highest levels.
By the way, there is a flip side to these
two keys, and it is this: The best we can
be with low motivation is adequate. No
matter how hard we work and desire
it, in the long run we will never be
excellent at something without high
levels of motivation in that area. In
other words, if we toil in areas where
we have low motivation, we resign
ourselves to mediocrity.
Who wants to be mediocre? Who
wants to be known as "adequate?"
Wouldnt you rather have a shot at
excellence? The first step to unlocking
your excellence is to know what you
do well naturally and understanding
what your motivations are.

Canucks Counting On Bonino As 2nd-Line Center

If Nick Bonino had any doubts about
how the Vancouver Canucks really felt
about him, they should have ended
as soon as he saw the behind-thescenes footage the team released of
management discussing the trade that
brought him to Vancouver in exchange
for Selke Trophy-winning center Ryan
Kesler.
Bonino, who was acquired from the
Anaheim Ducks along with defenseman
Luca Sbisa and the 24th pick in the
2014 NHL Draft that Vancouver used
to select Jared McCann, didn't go
looking for the clip. He couldn't avoid
it either.
"My grandpa is 91 and he's on the
Internet all the time and he's my biggest
fan, so he called me up and told me
about it right away," Bonino said.
In the video, general manager Jim
Benning talks about Bonino potentially
scoring 20 goals for the Canucks,
making other players better with his
passing, and mentions that new coach
Willie Desjardins wants and really
likes him.
Factor in the times this summer
Benning pointed out Bonino outscored
Kesler last year, getting 49 points for
Anaheim compared to Kesler's 43 for
Vancouver, and it's clear Bonino will
play a pivotal role this season as the
second-line center on a team that's
struggled to score.
"It looked like he took the next step in
his career," Benning said. "We hope he
can continue on where he left off last
year."
Critics of the pre-draft trade have
pointed out that might not be easy for
Bonino in Vancouver, at least not in
terms of pure point production.
The 26-year-old center got 20 of his 49
points as part of a four-forward group
on a loaded Anaheim power play that

included Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry.

As a left shot, Bonino is less likely to
get the same first-unit opportunity
with Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin in
Vancouver, and there are signs he will
instead be used to anchor the second
power play.
But there is little doubt Bonino will get
a better look as the second-line center
at even strength. It's an opportunity
Bonino craves, even as others wonder
if he's suited for it based on his usage
and performance 5-on-5 with the
Ducks last season.
"It's definitely a goal of mine to be a
top-six forward in the League, and it's
different to be called a second-line
center now," Bonino said. "It comes
with responsibility. You have to make
good plays, be responsible, and you
have to produce."
The Ducks succeeded despite
uninspiring possession numbers, so

assessing Bonino's ability to produce

based solely on statistics from last
season is complicated. He played on
many lines, and with many players,
including a fourth-line role in the
Stanley Cup Playoffs that left many
questioning Vancouver's projection of
a second-line center.
"I don't know technically what line
I played on," Bonino said. "I was all
over."
Bonino's 5-on-5 possession numbers
aren't
overwhelmingly
positive,
including a minus-0.5 Corsi Relative
rate that indicates the Ducks controlled
play better when he wasn't on the ice.
But those possession metrics improved
significantly from the season before,
and six of his eight most frequent
linemates posted a higher goals-for
percentage when playing with Bonino
than they did without him.
The Canucks believe Bonino can

continue to progress playing between

Alexandre
Burrows,
who
has
traditionally been a strong possession
player even without the Sedin twins,
and either Zack Kassian or Chris
Higgins.
"He's a skilled player," Benning said
of Bonino. "I think he can play 5-on-5
and not hurt you, and from the top of
the circles down he's got good hands
and he's skilled."
Bonino also seems aware many are
pointing to a 13.8 shooting percentage
that was almost four points above the
NHL average as unsustainable and
another reason to expect his goals to drop
from a career-high 22. But Bonino sees
himself as a pass-first center (something
Kesler definitely was not) and views his
shooting percentage as a result of getting
into advantageous positions.
"For me, if you have a high shooting
percentage, you are getting to the good
areas, and if that's something that I can
do and keep shooting the puck then I
would like to do it," Bonino said, "But
I have always been a pass-first guy."
Desjardins watched Anaheim play the
Dallas Stars in the Western Conference
First Round while he was coaching
the Stars' American Hockey League
affiliate to a Calder Cup title, and liked
what he saw out of Bonino.
"He's a smart player, I like that about
him, and he's a skill player, I like that
as well," said Desjardins, who has
talked to Bonino twice this summer
over the phone. "He's excited at more
opportunity 5-on-5, to be counted on a
little bit more and in key roles. Does his
point total go up or down depending on
PP time? I don't know. But I know he
is a player with abilities that can help
our team, and we are counting on him
to come in here and make us a better
team."

Ben Ryan Drops Lutumailagi, Naikasau From Fiji 7S

Vodafone Fiji sevens coach Ben Ryan
says he will not tolerate any indiscipline
within his squad.
This as he dropped Leo Naikasau and
Joeli Lutumailagi from his 30-member
training squad named.
The two are the notable exclusions
from the squad, which includes a
number of former reps.
Ryan says he has picked players who
have shown their commitment to don
the national jumper.
Joeli

and
Leo
(Naikasau) unfortunately didnt come
down to the fitness testing. We made
every effort to communicate with them
and Joeli rang me this morning to be
fair to him but neither really had an
excuse. But with the competition there
is and they know I am strict and keep to

my word on things and we cant bring

them into camp next week and its hard
for them to get in and they will have
to work very hard to try and oust these
others guys.
The squad marches into camp next
Monday.

Next Three Games Will Show Whitecaps Progress

Fans of the Vancouver Whitecaps must

wonder if this team will ever make
a break from what appears to be a
tiresome holding pattern as they near
the end of their fourth season in MLS.
Once again they started off exciting
everyone by winning some early
games with an attacking, pleasing
style, at which point many of the other
teams began to figure out what they
were doing and devised plans to thwart
them.
When Erik Hurtado cooled off and
Kekuta Manneh and Darren Mattocks
couldnt seem to finish enough of their
chances, the offence took its leave and
what looked like a sure playoff spot
came more into question.
Then more of the seemingly always
ongoing tinkering began again in hopes
of finding a centre back, and it looks
to some like another of those endless
rebuilding years new teams can endure
before ever reaching the level of the
better, established teams.
Sure, newcomer Mauro Rosales has
some technical skill and experience,
and Kendall Waston, another recent
signing, has got some size to move up
and perhaps get on the end of set pieces.
But at this point, its all just more talk,
more change, something of which this
team has seen entirely too much.
Now here comes a golden chance to
show that this narrative is more illusion
than reality, something most of the
players and manager Carl Robinson
will argue.
They think they are further along,
mostly because of the experience so

Vancouver head coach Carl Robinson thinks the addition of Mauro Rosales
will help the Whitecaps become a deeper offensive team, as their MLS
opposition has figured out how to stymie their current attack.

I think, for the first time in four years,

I can attest to this we have the best
chemistry in the locker-room that
weve had and thats the best thing to
build on.
That may be a reflection of the
somewhat chaotic first three years more
than anything else. But now they have
the right manager in Carl Robinson,
theyve finally shown they can spend
wisely with Pedro Morales and Matias
Laba, and had they not lost Camilo,
who was a good friend of Robinsons,
who knows where this team might be?
But they did lose him, and hence they
still need a striker, so no matter how
this season turns out there will be more
changes.
Teams have stifled us this year,
especially recently, says Robinson.
They know what our attacking assets
are and theyve managed to find a
solution to stop us. What weve got
to do now, and me as a coach, is that
Ive got to find another solution that if
were unable to beat them from good
attacking, fast, free-flowing football,
then with a little bit of guile from deeper
positions how can we create more
chances and take more chances. Thats
why the addition of Mauro Rosales is
huge for us, because technically hes
as good as anyone in this league. Hes
got experience and hes been part of
winning teams. Weve just got to keep
finding solutions.
If they can come up with solutions over
the next three games, all this talk of
progress being made will be a whole
lot more believable.

Ba's Campaign Is On Track: Iliyaz Khan

title defence campaign is well on
track and the Men In Black will leave
no stones unturned in their semi-final
preparations this week, says team
secretary Iliyaz Khan.
After thumping Labasa 4-1 and topping
Pool B, Khan said the players have
defied all odds to reach the semi-finals.
There was immense pressure on the
boys to perform at home and qualify.
While there were a lot of critics, we
relied on the support of the Vanua
and all the wonderful people of Ba all
around the globe.
The boys knew how important it
was for them to win games at home
and prove their worth. Everyone was
determined to give their best and I

sincerely thank every member of the

team for stepping up to the challenge
and helping the team to reach the semifinal.
We have one week to prepare
thoroughly for the semi-final and we
know Lautoka will be very tough to
beat.
We played Lautoka in the final of
BOG last year and this time around we
are meeting in the semi-final. We will
assess all our injuries and commence
with training after giving a rest day to
the players.
Ba and Lautoka will clash in the second
semi-final at 4pm this Saturday at the
ANZ Stadium while host Suva will
