Late 43 Yard Field Goal Leads Hilltop Past Antwerp

PHOTOS BY FORREST R. CHURCH, PUBLISHER

WINNING FIELD GOAL ... Cadet Justin Ashenfelter receives a good snap, hold, and great blocking which enabled him to drill a perfect 43 yard field goal with 13 seconds
left in the game which proved to be the game winner.
By: T.J. Hug
THE VILLAGE REPORTER
September 5th-6th-ANTWERP: A stoppage in play and
postponement in mid-game did nothing to shortchange the
intensity of the contest between Antwerp and the visiting
Hilltop Cadets. A sizable portion of this game was played
on Friday night, as scheduled, but surrounding thunderstorms delayed the completion of the match-up until Saturday afternoon.
The Archers drew first blood as quarterback Josh Poulson completed a 67 yard pass to Trenton Copsey for a first
quarter touchdown. Running back Justice Clark was able
to pound in the two point conversion attempt, giving Antwerp an early 8-0 lead. On the ensuing kick-off, however,
Mikel Burlew exploded for a 75 yard return and touchdown
for the Cadets. Hilltop quarterback Quinn Smith tried to
even the score with a conversion of his own, but his pass
fell incomplete. This made the score 8-6 Archer advantage.
Hilltop took the lead in the second period. Tyler Suboski
was on the receiving end of a 30 yard touchdown strike
from Smith. Again, the two point conversion pass attempt
was missed by Smith. Still the Cadets had taken control
of the game, 12-6.
The third quarter saw the Cadets add three more points
to their total, thanks to the leg of Justin Ashenfelter. The

kicker nailed a 29 yard field goal for the score. The Antwerp combination of Poulson and Copsey wasn't finished
quite yet, though, as the quarterback and receiver hooked
up for a 15 yard touchdown pass. Jarett Brute made the
first extra point of the game by either side, and the third
period concluded with a 15-15 tie.
Defense ruled the fourth quarter, as both offenses
struggled to put points on the board. In fact, the first and
only score of the period came with only 13 seconds left on
the clock. Ashenfelter landed an impressive 43 yard field
goal to give Hilltop the victory over Antwerp, 18-15. The
game-winning boot of Ashenfelter broke the Hilltop record
of 39 yards, previously held by his older brother, Austin.
In the losing effort, Antwerp actually outgained the Cadet offense with 355 total yards versus Hilltop's 278. This
advantage came from a huge rushing differential, as the
Archers ran for 161 yards as a team, while Hilltop only
managed to rush for 38. The Cadets ruled the skies, however, passing for 240 yards compared to Antwerp's 194.
Hilltop also won the turnover battle, throwing only 1 intereception as opposed to the Archers 2 picks. Antwerp did
control the time of possession, holding the ball more than
twice as long as the Cadets.
This game was won predominantly on the arm of Smith
who completed 16 of 33 passes for 240 yards for Hilltop,
adding a touchdown and interception to those numbers.

Smith was also the team's leading rusher, carrying the ball
11 times for 23 yards. Running back David Smith had 7
rushes for 13 yards.
The leading receiver for the Cadets was Zack VanDyke,
hauling in 6 receptions for 117 yards. Tyler Suboski made
5 catches for 61 yards, and Mikel Burlew looked in 4 passes for 53 yards.
Antwerp's Poulson went 9 for 16 passing, with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Both of those touchdowns were
caught by receiver Trenton Copsey, who reeled in 5 catches
for 118 yards. Willie Jones had 5 receptions for 54 yards.
Nick Barnhouse led the Antwerp rushing attack with
19 attempts and 99 yards. Justice Clark added 11 rushes
for 66 yards.
Perhaps the biggest story on the night, rushing wise,
at least, was the -18 yards dealt to Poulson. The Hilltop
defense was able to sack the mobile quarterback 3 times
during the course of the game, also containing his running
ability all throughout. This strategy may very well have
made the biggest impact on the outcome of this game.
Next week, Hilltop will play their home opener against
Holgate. Ideally, this will take place on Friday night at 7:00
P.M. But, as this week has proven, one can never be totally
sure.

GAME ENDING INTERCEPTION ... Kohl Collins picks off a late Antwerp attempt for
a miracle to run out the clock and to lock the Hilltop triumph.

DEFENSE ... Having been blown out in their opening contest at Montpelier, Hilltops defense played tough at AHS, giving up 15 points.

LOW SCORING AFFAIR ... QB Quinn Smith was pressured throughout the game
but mustered up a late run on a scramble to help set up the winning field goal.

CONTINUATION OF FOOTBALL ACTION

Bulldog Rushing Attack Gashes Bomber Defense

By: T.J. Hug
THE VILLAGE REPORTER
September 5th-6th-EDON: There is
many a clich that could be used to describe why Edon lost on Saturday.
Losing the turnover battle is always
a popular choice. And yes, when a team
turns the ball over six times like the Bombers did against the Edgerton, it is extremely difficult to win a game. Add to that the
fact that most of said turnovers happened
in the second quarter, when the Bulldogs
exploded for 33 points, and this argument
becomes even more convincing.
Others might point to the lack of a
ground game for Edon. Indeed, rushing
24 times for just 9 yards is pretty rough,
especially when one considers that quarterback Kaiden Sapp rushed for 17 yards
by himself. Generally, an inability to run
the football will make even the most potent
of offenses anemic.
A simple look at the scoreboard will

convince most people that Edon's effort

must have been lacking. After all, it's hard
to look at the scoreboard and honestly believe that the Edgerton might have been
that much better than the Bombers. It's
much easier to look at the players from a
distance and demand they play with more
heart.
But no, none of these things were the
determining factor in Edon's 20-59 loss to
hated rival Edgerton.
The turnovers, while debilitating to be
sure, weren't enough to keep Edon down
by themselves. In fact, most of the turnovers were committed a good distance
away from the Bomber end zone, giving
their defense every opportunity to respond
to the sudden change of possession.
Rushing for 9 yards as a team did little
to stop the Edon passing attack. Kaiden
Sapp still threw for 348 yards and a touchdown while completing 23 of 43 passes.
And anyone at the game could tell by
how loud the pads were cracking that

heart wasn't lacking on either side of the

field, and certainly not from the Bombers.
The culprit behind Edon being on the
wrong side of a 39 point route was none
other than their own rushing defense. The
Bomber defense gave up 318 yards and
8 touchdowns on 32 attempts. In other
words, one out of every four times a Bulldog rusher touched the ball, Edgerton
scored a touchdown.
It's not as though the Bulldogs methodically wore Edon down. Those 8 touchdown runs made up 207 of their rushing
yards, with 6 of them being longer than 20
yards. 56 of Edgerton's leading rusher,
Dallas King's 99 yards came on two plays,
both of them touchdown runs. His quarterback, Duane Miller, amassed 74 yards
on his 2 touchdown runs, which is 30
more yards than he gained from passing
the ball all day.
The point is, outside of those six plays,
the Edon defense held Edgerton to a much
more respectable 121 yards rushing and a

pair of short touchdown runs. With only

80 yards passing on the afternoon for the
Bulldogs, and 36 of those yards coming
from a meaningless touchdown reception
by receiver Alex Michael, that would have
reduce Edgerton's total yardage to just
over 200 yards.
But it doesn't work that way, and Miller, King, and running back Logan Daniels
were able to break long runs when they got
to the second and third levels of the Bomber defense. Is this due to some schematic
issue with Edon's back seven? Could it be
a fundamentals issue? Is a personnel shift
in order? It's tough to say for sure, but it's
clear that some adjustments are likely to
be made, and soon.
Hicksville is coming to visit, and if the
Bombers want to save their season, they
can't let six plays beat them again this
week.

CONTINUATION OF FOOTBALL ACTION

Wauseon Indians Derail Montpelier Locomotives

By: T.J. Hug
THE VILLAGE REPORTER
September
5th-6th-MONTPELIER:
Nothing went right for Montpelier in their
attempt to host Wauseon.
Kicking off Friday night, the game was
postponed to Saturday after only a few
plays due to thunderstorms. Unfortunately for the Locomotives, things only got
worse from there.
Two first half touchdown passes by
Indians quarterback Zac Robinson put
Montpelier in an early hole. Noah Castle
and Derek Rupp made the receptions, for
20 and 12 yards respectively. The only
thing to go right for the Locos in the period was when Wauseon kicker Josh Whitcomb missed the extra point on his teams
second touchdown.

Another Robinson touchdown throw,

preceded by a 2 yard touchdown run by
Nate Suntken, put Wauseon up by 26
points. Whitcomb missed a second point
after attempt after the rushing score. Late
into the third quarter, Nate Suntken ran
for a much longer touchdown, sprinting
49 yards for the score. With Whitcombs
kick parting the uprights, the Indians
took a 33 point lead.
The fourth quarter was more of the
same. Robinson threw for another touchdown, this one to Jacob Flory for 72 yards.
T.J. Gype ran 69 yards into the end zone
for the last score of the game. Whitcomb
nailed both extra points, giving Wauseon
a 47-0 victory over home team Montpelier.
At the conclusion of the game, the boys
from Wauseon had amassed an impressive 519 yards of total offense, while the

Locos only managed to generate 81. The

Indians also dominated the time of possession, holding the ball for thirteen minutes longer than Montpelier.
Zac Robinson led the offensive assault
against Montpelier. With deadly accuracy, the Wauseon quarterback completed 18 of 22 passes for 287 yards and 4
touchdowns. Rushing wise, the meaningless touchdown run by Gype made him
the leading rusher for the Indians. Nate
Suntkens 6 rushes for 67 yards and 2
touchdowns had a greater impact on the
game, however. But it was Robinson himself who took on the majority of the rushing burden, keeping the ball 16 times for
55 yards.
For as rough of a game as this was for
the Locomotives, they played a fairly clean
game. Taking care of the ball for most of

the game, they only fumbled once, though

that did lead to the only turnover of the
game. Montpelier also committed only
a single penalty, which amounted to five
yards.
Despite the lack of mental mistakes,
the Locos just couldnt find a rhythm for
their offense. Quarterback Dylan Snyder
went 4 for 9 passing for 33 yards, also
running the ball 7 times for 20 yards.
Bryce Cooley was the most productive
runner for Montpelier on the afternoon,
charging ahead twice for 21 yards.
Montpelier will need to regroup by next
week, as they will be hosting Liberty Center. Wauseon travels to Willard for their
next contest.

September 2nd-MONTPELIER: With
the Eagles of North Central coming into
town, the Lady Locomotives were ready.
Despite a valiant effort by the visiting
Lady Eagles, it took Montpelier only three

Each set was a battle, but the Cadets
failed to take a set from Liberty Center on
the road.
The Lady Cadets made Liberty Center
uncomfortable in game 1, but were unable
to take the set, losing 21-25. Not deterred,
the Hilltop girls made another run at the
Tigers in the second set. It wasnt enough,
though, as the Cadets fell 22-25. Hilltop

tried to mount one last assault, but Liberty Center turned up the heat. The Lady
Cadets lost the third and final game 16-25.
Cierra Grant led the way for the Lady

2 assists, and 2 blocks in the losing effort.

Pettisville Wears Down Stryker

September 4th-STRYKER: Taking to
the road, the Lady Blackbirds challenged
Stryker in their first BBC match of the
year. It was a successful journey for Pettisville, as they were able to walk away with
the win.
In game 1, Stryker tried to keep pace
with Pettisville, but fell behind 17-25. In
the second set, the Blackbirds began to
take over the match. They won the game
25-11. Pettisville didn't let up in game 3,
and took the set 25-10.

Jordyn Pursel had 11 digs, 10 kills,

Edon Bombers Drop

North Central In Straight Sets
September 4th-PIONEER: With Edon
coming to town, North Central knew they
had a tough match on their hands. Still,
the Bombers were able to come into their
home court and leave with a BBC Victory.
Edon got off to a great start, winning
the first set 25-10. The Lady Eagles improved their play in game 2, but couldn't
best the Bombers, dropping the set 16-25.

The girls of North Central stepped up even

more in the third set, but game 3 belonged
to the Bombers, with the road team taking
the set 25-19.
In the loss, Rachel Oxender got things
going for her team, making 12 assists.
Alyssa Swank added 7 kills for North Central, while Abby Auch led the team in passes and serves with 11 and 6, respectively.

Wauseon Indians Win Wild

Seesaw Sets With Swanton

September 4th-SWANTON: An epic battle took place in Swanton on Thursday, as

the Lady Indians hit the road to take on
the Lady Bulldogs. The match went back
and forth, with momentum swaying as the
wind, but it was the girls of Wauseon who
stood victorious at the end of the night.
Game 1 set the tone for the evening.
Coming down to the wire, Wauseon took
a viciously competitive set, 28-26. Neither
side eased up in the second set, and Swanton came away with a 26-24 win in game 2.
The largest margin of victory on the night
came in game 3, where the Lady Indians
enjoyed a 25-20 advantage. The Bulldogs

bit back, however, earning a 25-22 victory

in the fourth set, forcing a deciding game
5. This last set was more fiercely contested
than any other, with the Wauseon girls
stealing the road match 19-17.
Sariah Yackee defended the Indian side
of the court superbly, with 37 digs to her
name, as well as an ace. Hayley Chamberlain set her teammates up beautifully all
night, amassing 30 assists to go along with
her 2 kills and 2 blocks. Morgan Roth also
made 30 assists, and had 9 digs. Kierra
Fountain led the scoring effort for the Lady
Indians, nailing 15 kills and 6 aces, and
contibuted 6 digs as well.

North Central Eagles Lose

Tri-Match At Liberty Center

September 6th-LIBERTY CENTER:

The Lady Eagles of North Central took to
the road, traveling to Liberty Center for
a tri-match against the Tigers and fellow
travelers, the Hicksville Aces.
In the first match, North Central took
on Liberty Center. The first set was an
exciting one, as both sides played well.
The Eagles eventually dropped the close
set, however, 25-27. Game 2 wasn't

nearly as competitive, most likely due to

the nature of North Central's previous
defeat. Liberty Center took the set, 2512.
Against Hicksville, the Eagles lost in
straight sets. Game 1 saw the Aces overtake North Central, 25-13. The Lady Eagles tried to come back, but just didn't
have enough momentum. They dropped

Edon was able to pull away for a 25-17 vic-

Wauseon JV Win, Lose Tri-Match

September 6th-WAUSEON: The JV
Lady Indians challenged both Napoleon
and Ottawa Glandorf on Saturday.
To begin the day, Wauseon went head
to head with Napoleon, a team they beat
in back-to-back sets. Game 1 saw the
Indians take the set comfortably, 25-17.
Napoleon came a little closer in the second set. It wasn't enough, however, as the

girls of Wauseon controlled the game, 2519.

Against Ottawa Glandorf, the results
were quite different. The first set went
poorly for the home team Indians, as they
fell 9-25. In game 2, Wauseon attempted to rebound. This redoubling of effort
wasn't enough, however, and the Indians
dropped the set 14-25.

North Central Lady Eagle

JV Loses To Aces, Tigers
September 6th-LIBERTY CENTER:
Taking part in a tri-match in volleyball is
difficult. Going against two teams involves
more preparation, more dedication, and,
of course, more perspiration. And even
that isn't enough, sometimes.
The junior varsity girls of North Central traveled to Liberty Center to do battle
with both the home town Tigers and the
Aces of Hicksville. Despite some standout
performances, however, the Lady Eagles
left Liberty Center with no more wins than
losses.
Hicksville was the first opponent for
North Central. The Eagles came out of the
gates strong, handing the Aces a 25-9 defeat. Regrouping, Hicksville gave the girls

of North Central all they could handle,

taking the set 25-23. The Lady Eagles
were able to rebound themselves, though,
as they won game 3 by a score of 25-15.
In the second match, the Lady Eagles
took on Liberty Center. Yet the Tigers were
ready for them. In game 1, North Central
played fiercely, but they couldn't overtake the Tigers, losing 17-25. The second
set played out similarly, with the Eagles
dropping the game 15-25.
Makalya Knapp had a monstrous day
for North Central, serving up 15 aces in
total. Aleea Lonabarger put down 5 kills
for the Lady Eagles, while teammate Allyson Fenicle went 7-0 on attacks, mustering 3 kills herself.

Lady Cadets JV Split Tri-Match

September 6th-WEST UNITY: The
Junior Varsity Lady Cadets took on
both Bryan and Tinora at their trimatch on Saturday.
Hilltop took on Bryan first, and the
exciting match went to three sets. In
the first game, the Cadets won a hard
fought set, 25-19. The second set belonged to the Golden Bears, 25-17. The

decisive game 3 was a struggle between

the two teams, but it was the girls of
Hilltop who came out on top, 25-21.
The match with Tinora went quite
differently, though. In Game 1, the
Lady Rams overpowered the Cadets,
25-11. The second set was Tinora's to
control as well, as the Lady Cadets fell
13-25.

Indians Slip Past The Blackbirds

By: Bill Bray
THE VILLAGE REPORTER
September 4th-PETTISVILLE: On a
scorching September afternoon at the Pettisville soccer field, Wauseon squeaked out
a 1-0 win over the Blackbirds in boys soccer action.
The first half belonged to Pettisville as
the ball was in their offensive end for much
of the half. As time was running out, a goal
was scored by Pettisvilles Jakob Waidelich
only to have it nullified by an offside call
against the Blackbirds Andrew Sauder.
The first four or five minutes of the second half was again played in the Blackbirds offensive end. The tide would turn
after that point as Wauseons Leo Rendon broke away and booted the ball into
the south goal from the right side for the
game-winning goal.
The Blackbirds outshot the Indians 1411, but it was the second half drive both
offensively and defensively that led the In-

dians to the win.

The play was really lop sided in the first
half with mainly Pettisville controlling the
game, Wauseon coach Shawn Kaufmann
said. We really seem to be a second half
team.
Brady Kinnersley, new to the Wauseon
program, was the keeper in the match
and had several key saves and earned the
shutout.
To my knowledge, this is his first introduction to competitive soccer. He has
no travel experience or high school playing
experience prior to this season. He is an
exceptional athlete and though Ive never
seen him play his other sports, basketball
and baseball, theres no doubt he excels in
those as well. He is still learning the keeper
position but did a few things last night to
show me he is getting more comfortable.

ACTION ... Hunter Throurot (15) heads the ball as teammate Andrew Gray (19) looks
on.

Named TJGA Player Of The

Year For Second Straight Year
By: T.J. Hug
THE VILLAGE REPORTER
Trevor Frank Stranahan was a very well accomplished gentleman.
He studied business at
Harvard and The University
of Pennsylvania. He was
a world class weight-lifter.
He completed 102 marathons.
Oh, and he played a little golf, too.
The Toledo native's golf
career spanned from 193654, and comprised of over
70 amateur tournament
victories, as well as a professional victory at the L.A.
Open in 1958 and several
high finishes in Major Tournaments. He also came in
second at the U.S. Amateur
in 1954, losing to some guy
named Arnold Palmer.
So it's no wonder the
Toledo Junior Golfer's Association
(TJGA)
chose
Stranahan as the figure to
which they tied their boy's
player of the year award.
Since 1973. the TJGA has
honored high school golfer
with the Frank Stranahan
Player of the Year Award,
using a points system
based on a series of tournaments played throughout
the Summer. The player
with the most points at the
conclusion of these tournaments takes home the honor of Stranahan's name.
And for the last two
years, that player has been
Trevor Dominique.
Our 2013 and 2014
winner was Trevor Dominique from Wauseon, who
dominated the points for
the second consecutive
year. This per the TJGA's

Both sets were hotly contested, and both
ended with the Lady Eagles winning 2522.

Thursday. The girls of Pettisville successfully defended their home court in both
games.
The Seventh Grade Stryker Girls play

In Eighth Grade action, The Lady
Blackbirds controlled the match. They
took game 1 by a comfortable 25-10 margin. The Lady Panthers came back strong
in the second set, but Pettisville was able
to fend them off for a 25-19 victory.

September 4th-STRYKER: The Lady

Blackbirds were able to win their first BBC
game despite playing on the road Thursday. It wasn't easy, however, as the Lady
Panthers from Stryker defended their
home court with vigor.
The first set was a tough battle, with

Pettisville pulling away for a 25-17 win.

The girls of Stryker didn't relent, though,
and came back with ferocity in the second
game, taking the set 25-16. In game 3,
however, the Lady Blackbirds stepped up
and overpowered Stryker, 25-16.
