on the Monaco circuit. Seconds later, he
..:: rockets past the swimming-pool complex
at 140mph and protruding from a fence hole just six to
seven inches above his rear wing is 22-year-old
motorsport photographer Dom Romney, shutter rapidly
clicking away. A moment later and Jenson is out of sight,
his exhaust note still resonating around the marina, and
Dom is set up ready for the next car to hurtle past.

Photographer of the Year award for the second time in
2011 and shortly afterwards I was speaking to a friend at
Getty Images. He mentioned that Sutton Images were
looking for an Fl photographer so I passed on my details
and didn't give it much thought. It wasn't until the
Thursday before the Monaco race that I got a call.
Needless to say, I packed on Thursday night, landed on
Friday and went straight to the circuit. There's nowhere
quite like Monaco - it's absolutely bonkers - the people,
the location and the track are all completely unique."
Despite his relatively young age, Dom has a wealth of
experience when it comes to shooting cars and
motorsport. "My dad was an amateur photographer and I

used to pinch his Canon EOS 3 whenever I could until he
bought me my own camera. My family have always been
big petrol heads and involved in motorsport too. As they
were rac ing I was always there taking pictures - I had a
love for cars and photography, and I'm very fortunate that
I have been able to bring the two together."
As I glance through Dom's portfolio, I'm struck by the
variety of images. Dom has developed a client base that
includes both editorial and commercial clients and spans
across all things automotive. "I have an eclectic crosssection of clients, which keeps things interesting. One
week I might shoot a race event for an editorial client and
the next, a commercial product shoot. It's a chance to use
a mix of different skills, approaches and processes."
It's Dom's approach to motorsport photography that
really catches your eye. When faced with the restrictions
of where you can and can't shoot from at each circuit and
the competition from other photographers all vying for a
shot, standing out is no mean feat. "It starts with research.
I look at what I've shot before or what other people have
taken at the circuit. I look for what works, the shots that
people like and for iconic landmarks such as the casino in
Monaco or the cranes in the background at the Korean
International Circuit that I can include. Once I've got those
I go looking for new angles and approaches."

Bold compositions, creative use of shutter speed and
:a: strong visual cues are all trademarks of Dom's images, and

alongside the bread-and-butter shots, he makes sure he
exercises his creativity whenever he can. "Your typical Fl
event is run over three days - Friday is practice, Saturday is
qualifying and Sunday is race day. Friday gives you time to
play and scope out new angles - I enjoy experimenting
with loose compositions in particular. Although there's a
team of hundreds of people behind every car, motorsport
boils down to one person simply trying to go as fast as
they can. Using negative space in my images plays on that
sense of isolation. When I'm panning with a slower shutter
speed in particular, I try to leave space for the car to move
into - it enhances the sense of speed. The shutter speed I
use depends on what I'm shooting - with Fl you are often

further back from the action, so you can get away with
easier shutter speeds such as 1/200sec or 1/125sec for a
c risp image. If I want to get more creative, I'll play around
at 1/60sec, 1/20sec or slower. The slower pans take more
time to nail, but you have to stay regimented. It's easy to
spend 45 m inutes getting a shot, but if you have another
five shots planned and the next corner is a 20-minute
walk, you have to know w hen to walk away."
Although Formula O ne is the glory piece of Dom's
portfolio, he still likes to stick to his roots and shoot drag
racing. "Drag racing is w here it all started for me. No one
was really taking an artistic approach to photographing
drag; they were standing at the side of the track taking the
same picture time and time again. I decided to take a
similar approach to Fl: shooting using my ND grad filters,
or with a wide-angle lens perched on a cherry picker

above t he track."
For many, the opportunity to shoot at a world-class
motorsport event would be a dream come true, and Dom
explains t hat anything is possible if you work your way up.
"If you're serious about motorsport photography then
start by shooting public access events at small c ircuits.
Build up a portfolio and then you can approach local
racing teams o r newspapers to see if they'll let you
document the events. Once your foot is in t he door,
you can start working your way up. Research, plan and
prepare. The crucial moments in motorsport happen in
split-seconds, but it's what you do in the minutes and
hours leading up to those moments that counts."

provides a long-term test of Nikon's
highly regarded full-frame DSLR
WHEN I WENT professional as a

freelance photographer in 2009,
I bought into the Nikon DSLR
system with a Nikon D700, a
clutch of lenses and a Speed light
flashgun. It's a camera that has proved its
worth over and over again, tackling
everything from portraits and fashion to
travel, architecture and even studio-based
pack shots. It's responsive, easy to use and
reliable. Three years later and the only thing
I really wanted was a bit more resolution
than 12-megapixels.
And so I joined the long list of Nikon users
waitig patiently for a successor for the D700,
and when the D800 was announced you
could have knocked me down with a
feather: 36.3-megapixel resolution is in the
league of the medium-format cameras I had
been occasionally hiring. To be honest, I'd
have been happy with something around
the 20-megapixel mark.
By the time I got around to thinking about
the D800 seriously, I'd read lots of reviews of
the camera and even tried out a sample for a
weekend. ltwasclearthatgood lenses were
needed to make the most of the high
resolution, and that good camera skills are
also required; this is a photographer's
camera. But what fascinated me were the
reports of other benefits aside from the
headline-grabbing 36.3-megapixel
resolution. Extra dynamic range, faster AF
and Full-HD video. Of course I was going to
buy one - it was just a matter of when.
In the end I couldn't have picked a more
risky time to upgrade. I bought a D800 body
and AF-S SO mm f /1.4 Glens from Calumet
just days before I was due to fly out to
The Gambia for a week-long commission
shooting for the Medical Research Council
(MRC). I was to document everything that
went on in Keneba - a rural village where

the MRC has had a research field station

for many years. The job would involve
landscape, portrait and documentary
photography, all taking place in an
environment where houses don't usually
have running water or electricity, and the
bright African sunshine creates harsh,
high-contrast conditions. And it was the
rainy season. Nevertheless it was the
unfamiliar D800 that was packed in the bag,
along with the D700 as a back-up camera.
Into Africa
Although one is never supposed to use
unfamiliar equipment for the first time on an
important shoot, I had an unfair advantage
with the D800. If you have ever used a Nikon
camera before - particularly the D300,
D700 or a D3-series body- then you will
feel right at home. There are only a few
minor differences in control layout
compared with the D700, and for good
reason: the camera handles brilliantly; if it
ain't broke, don't fix it.
Welcome new additions are a higherresolution screen and dedicated controls for
video shooting, though I prefer the AF mode
switch from the older D700 body. This fell
nicely under the left-hand thumb and just
had three positions -AF-S, AF-C and M.
The D800 switch has just AF and Mand a
central button that must be held down while
a control dial is turned in order to flick
between AF-Sand AF-C modes. I hear that
this change is designed to make adjustment
easier with the camera held to the eye, but,
to be honest, I don't agree.
This, though, is the only design niggle I can
find in the camera. Otherwise it is intuitive to
use, handles responsively and shoots

quickly. During my time shooting in Keneba,
and surrounding villages, there were many
occasions when I raised the D800 to my eye
to capture the briefest of moments. Without
time to really think about how to set up the
camera, I still managed to get the picture
almost every time. In this sense, the D800
and D700 are true creative tools in that they
enable you to shoot what you want without
getting in the way.
The viewfinder is as bright and large as
we've come to expect from full-frame
cameras, with information being presented in
a green LED display atthe bottom of the
finder, or overlaid on the scene with
transparent LCD technology. It's great that
this latter display is so customisable; grid-lines
can be shown when you want them, but not
when you want to shoot distraction-free.
The built-in spirit level is now clearer to see,
and the active focus point shows up clearly
whatever the lighting conditions.
With full-frame cameras comes extra bulk
and weight, and if you are moving up to this
format from cropped-sensor (APS-C)
DSLRs, then the ache in your shoulder at the
end of a day's shooting may take you by
surprise at first. A larger sensor requires
bigger chunks of glass in lenses, and this
makes for heavier kit to carry around. This is
certainly true with the D800 when paired
with AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8mm FX G and AF-S
70-200mm f/2.8 G lenses, but then it's also a
good deal lighter than a D3 series or D4
camera body. Ironically, then, if you want
full-frame photography on the move, the
D800 is not a bad bet, though the newer,
more affordable D600 is even smaller.

All about the megapixels?

Think of image quality and one must
consider the D800's extraordinary
resolution - after all, 36.3-megapixels is its
party piece. Indeed, images are stuffed with
detail, and image quality is really determined
(or limited) by the lens in use. O lder optics do
not fare so well, with the new camera's
sensor revealing every flaw. Newer lenses
were obviously designed with such heady
resolutions in mind. The AF-S 24-70mm
f/2.8mm FX G isa great all-rounder, and the
newer AF-S 50mm f/1.4 G is even better,
producing crisp, biting detail that can't help
but make you smile when seen at 100
percent magnification on screen.
This was never more true than when
shooting portraits of Gambian villagers in
their houses, fields or shops around Keneba,

where the 0800 recorded every last drop of
detail in the surroundings. I have always
adored environmental portraiture, and the
new Nikon proved itself to be an
extraordinary tool for this type of work.
To make the most of this sharpness,
though, a few things have to be considered.
Firstly, 36.3-megapixels doesn't just resolve
more detail, but more camera shake, too.
I found I had to have a very steady hand to get
images that were free of motion blur when
viewed at 100 percent, or use a shutter speed
a full stop faster than I was used to with the
0700. The same can be said for focusing.
Where focus is bang-on, the image is
pin-sharp, but depth-of-field doesn't seem
to look after the other parts of the picture as

well as on lower mega pixel cameras. All this

needs to be taken in perspective, though.
View a file from the 0800at1:3
magnification and you 'll be seeing them the
same as you shot with a 0700 or 0300: the
motion-blur problems vanish. When looking
at a 36.3-megapixel image at 100 percent,
it's like taking a loupe to a poster print. You
may be identifying problems you never need
to worry about in the real world.
But there is more to the D800's
performance than mega pixels. The African
sunshine is hard and unforgiving, and makes
photographing people with very dark skin
something of a challenge. Dynamic range
- the ability to resolve detail in both the

brightest and darkest parts of a picture was pretty good with the 0700, but with the
0800 it has taken a leap forward.
A word of warning, though -JPEG
shooters should tackle high-contrast
situations in a different way to those
capturing in Raw. Nikon's Active 0-Lighting
makes a great job of holding detail in
h ighlights and shadows, but if you look at
Raw fi les captured at the same time - as I
had done on the first day of shooting you'll find that they are all underexposed.
This is because the camera underexposes
the scene relative to the metered reading to
preserve highlights, and boosts shadows
electronically. The former is recorded in a
Raw fi le, the latter is not, leading to an
underexposed result.
Since I prefer a Rawworkflow, I switched
off Active 0-Lighting and instead used Adobe
Lightroom's controls to bring back detail, but
not before the mistake cost me quite a few
frames that needed rescuing in postproduction. The Raw approach worked well,
though, and gave me better results than I
would have been able to shoot with the
0700. In documentary-type pictures, I could
capture expressions on faces as if a reflector
had been held in front of my subjects.
Low-tight performance
The 0700 was developed at a time when
Nikon was lagging behind in the megapixel
wars, but the company boasted that fewer
pixels meant better low-light performance.
And they were right- the 0700 shares the
same electronics as the 03, and both
cameras offered a hitherto unknown level of
high-ISO performance at the time. I was
concerned that the 0800 wouldn't be able
to match this, with three times as many
pixels packed into the same area, but a few
shots in the dark conditions of Keneba 's
houses allayed my fears.
To keep temperatures and dust to a
minimum, most of the houses in the village
have rooms with only one small window.
This makes t hem dark places in which to
photograph, even in the midday sun. A single
source of very bright sunshine lights up part

of the room and leaves everything else dark,

so I experimented with higher and higher ISO
settings, moving from ISO 800 to ISO 1600,
and onwards to ISO 3200 and above. At ISO
6400, I still captured frames that were
perfectly usable and managed to shoot
some of the most evocative pictures I have
ever taken. A trip out to visit newborn babies
and their mothers provided the opportunity
for some intimate and emotional portraits,
and it was only the low-light capability of the
camera to cope in these conditions that gave
me what I wanted.
Also enhanced in the 0800 is the AF
system, though perhaps not to the same
extent as other features. The camera still
packs 51 AF points in the same pattern as the
0700, though the camera seems to achieve
focus more quickly and confidently than in
previous incarnations. I certainly noticed a
higher percentage of in-focus pictures
when shooting 'from the hip' without
looking through the camera 's viewfinder.
Image size and workflow

Back home in the studio I enjoyed editing the
110GB of Raw fi les I shot in my first week.
These files are big : 36.3-megapixels gives
files measuring 7360x4912 pixels that open
to 103.4MB in Photos hop for editing. This
resulted in some unexpected upgrades to
my digital darkroom, namely new hard d isks
to store and back up files and larger capacity
CF cards to reduce the number of swaps
necessary in a shoot. I also upped the RAM in
my Mac Book Pro from 4GB to 16GB and saw
a huge boost in performance when editing
0800 Raw files in Lightroom and Photoshop
- something I knew I would need to do from
my time using medium-format.
This is perhaps the hidden cost of the
0800 and something not be overlooked if
you are thinking of buying one. Your lenses
must be good, and full-frame optics aren't
cheap. (I would dearly love an 85mm f/1.4
for my portrait work, but can't quite justify
the 1,100 price tag at the moment.)
Your computer needs to be quick, and you 'll

need plenty of storage space to keep image
files. Do your sums carefully; it's a crying
shame to have something like the D800 in
your bag and not use it to its full potential.
In the studio
When I began using the Nikon D800 in the
studio, I wasn't so much comparing it with
another D5LR, like the Canon E05 SD Mk Ill
or the older Nikon D700, but with mediumformat cameras I had used previously, such
as the Leica 52 and the Hasselblad H4D-40.
On the face of it, this is perhaps unfair; the
Nikon costs a tenth of the price of the Leica
52, but it's also roughly the same in terms of
pixel count, and I wanted to see just how near
it could get in terms of picture quality.
And the answer is: close enough for most
real-life use, but the D800 doesn't quite
have that wow-factor that medium -format
delivers when you look at a Hasselblad, Leica
or Phase One image at high magnification.
That said, the Nikon D800 is better than any
medium-format camera when it comes to
focusing speed, low-light performance,
shooting speed and handling, and this in most situations - easily makes up for any
small differences in image quality.

My Nikon D800 has so far been used for

head shots, corporate portraits, fashion,
product-shot work and a personal project
I'm shooting on freckles, and I've been
pleased with its performance every time.
Levels of detail in fabric and jewellery are
stunning, and a pair of razor-sharp eyes
against an out-of-focus face look sublime.
When the pace of shooting is slower and
more considered, I like to shoot tethered,
which I do with an Apple Mac Book Pro
running Adobe Lightroom 4 (Nikon's own
Capture Professional software is expensive
and not as well-designed). File transfer times
from camera to computer are slower, since
the files are larger, but using a U5B 3.0
connection certainly speeds things up.
The occasional trip to the medium-format
hire shop may still be needed, but I think the
D800 will make those trips far less frequent. ~

IFYOU'RE A full-frame DSLR user in want of

an ultra wide-angle zoom, then there isn't a
huge amount of choice. Sigma's 12-24mm
f/4.5-5.611 DG HSM bucks the trend and
offers the sort of focal lengths that APS-C
shooters frequently enjoy, but is designed for
use with both full-frameandAPS-C DSLRs.
On the surface, it sounds too good to be true.
Let's get something straight: if you want
technical perfection and corner-to-corner
sharpness, then this lens might not meet
expectations. At the widest end, the corners
are a bit on the soft side and there's some
expected geometric distortion noticeable if
you go w ider than 16mm or so. However, if
you're looking for an ultra wide-angle lens
that's fun to use with fantastic colour
rendition and good sharpness throughout
the majority of the frame, then read on.
Initial observations are positive - the lens
uses a combination of metal and plastic parts
and is well built, feeling sturdy in the hand.
The front element is bulbous and, as a result,
Sigma has incorporated a petal-type lens
hood into the body of the lens. A front cap
adaptor is included which allows you to fit
the lens cap, although I did find that this
adaptor slipped off a bit too easily when
pulling the lens out of my bag, leaving the
front element at risk of damage. The lens is
noticeably biggerthan the original Sigma
12-24mm version, not that this is a bad thing;
it's a nice size and weight in the hand.
While some people may occasionally use
the Sigma 12-24mm atthe longer focal
lengths, the appeal of this lens for most is at
the wide end. I'm not being unduly
hyperbolic here; this lens allows you to
capture unbelievably wide shots. It is the only
full-frame lens on the market that offers
rectangular image coverage wider than
14mm. At 12mm, you get a glorious 122
field-of-view on a full-frame body (100 on
an APS-C sensor), w hich means that if you're
not careful it's possible to see your own feet
creeping into the frame!
It's not without its downfalls - you won't
find fi lters that fit, due to the protruding front
element, and it's not the fastest lens on the
market - offering f I 4.5 at the widest end,
dropping down to f /5.6 once you start to
zoom. That being said, even wide open it is

surprisingly sharp across all but the very

corners of the frame. The autofocus is
quick and quiet, while depth-of-field at the
wide end is vast, even when shooting wide
open - stopped down to f/11, images are
packed with detail front to back, making the
need to actually focus before taking a shot
almost redundant.
There's some vignetting present when
shooting wide open, although this version is
a big improvement over the original
12-24mm in this respect, and once stopped
down this disappears. As mentioned earlier,
there's some geometric distortion at the
wider end, with slight chromatic aberrations
to boot, but if you're a user of Adobe
Lightroom or Camera Raw, then these are
easily fixed using the built-in lens profiles.
Coming in at a street price of 650, you
would think that a lens this wide would be a
bit too niche for most people, and you might
be right - but it is incredibly good fun to use,
and compared with the alternatives that
don't go as wide, it actually offers good value
for money. It's more practical than a fisheye
and images taken at 12mm on a full-frame
camera are things of beauty!
I spent a day walking around London with
it fitted on my Nikon 0800 and managed to
find no end of angles and uses for it - you
can simply fit so much in the frame! When
used indoors and outside once the light
dropped, the maximum aperture did
become somewhat restrictive, meaning I
had to either use a tripod or increase the ISO.
However, during daylight hours this wasn't a
problem. All in all, it's a fun lens to use.

Comprising a clear vinyl body that simply slips onto the head of the flash
gun, and an inverted frosted dome that clips onto the front.
In addition to diffusing the flash directly hitting your subject, the
inverted dome spreads light evenly through the sides of the clear
vinyl body, lighting up the surrounding environment, thus producing
a natural soft daylight effect. Especially useful for shooting interiors
and portraits, and is a firm favourite with wedding photographers.
