4 Purposes of Work
Meeting the worlds needs through
the creation and development of
necessary goods and services.
By his work and industriousness, man who has a
share in the divine art and wisdom makes creation,
the cosmos already ordered by the Father, more
beautiful. He summons the social and community
energies that increase the common good, above all
to the benefit of those who are neediest.

Which goods are
really good?

Which services
really serve?
Work is a good thing for man a good thing
for his humanity because through work man
not only transforms nature, adapting it to his
own needs, but he also achieves fulfillment as a
human being and indeed, in a sense, becomes
more a human being. (LE 9)
John Paul II, Laborem Exercens
THE HUMANIZING PURPOSE OF WORK
Work is valuable because it is an activity which enables human
beings to become more fully human and to fulfill themselves-it
has moral and spiritual value. This is more important than the
kind of work it is or because of what is produced.
Employees are not mere human resources or
human capital. Consequently, work must be
designed for the capacities and qualities of human
beings, and so we must not simply require that
people adapt to their work as if they were machines.

Good work gives scope for the intelligence and
freedom of workers, its context promotes social
relationships and real collaboration, and it does not
damage the health and physical well-being of the
worker.

. . . an important part of the vocation of Christian
business leaders is the practice of virtues, especially the
virtues of wisdom and justice.

Wise business leaders act virtuously in their practical
affairs, cultivating wisdom in concrete practices and
policies, not just in abstract mission statements.

This is what makes it practical wisdom: institutionalising
effective and just practices which foster right
relationships with stakeholders, creating policies which
put the social principles of the Church into practice in
creative ways which humanise the organisation.
(VBL # 75)
Mission-Vision.
The purpose of business, which Blessed John Paul II states is
not simply to make a profit, but is to be found in its very
existence as a community of persons who in various ways
are endeavouring to satisfy their basic needs, and who form
a particular group at the service of the whole of society.

The bonds which hold us in common are not merely legal
contracts or mutual self-interests, but commitments to real
goods, shared with others to serve the world.

It is dangerous and misinformed simply to consider business as
a society of shares, where self-interests, contracts, utility, and
financial profit maximisation exhaust its meaning.
The Purpose of an
Organization
To be a community of
persons
Who in various ways are
endeavoring to satisfy their
basic needs, and
Who form a particular
group at the service of the
whole of society.
Centessimus Annus, 1991

Pope John Paul II
Common good:

Vatican II defined the common good as: the sum total of
social conditions which allow people, either as groups or as
individuals, to reach their fulfillment more fully and more
easily. Common goods are developed between human beings
whenever they act purposefully together towards a goal which
they share.

We are relational beings who do not only have individual
goals, and who do not only grow individually. We also
participate in truly shared and common projects that
generate shared goods from which all participants benefit.
The common good embraces and supports all the goods
needed to allow each human being and all human beings to
develop, individually and communally. (VBL 34)

SOCIETY & ATTENTION TO
THE POOR
4 Management Models:
CLASSIC : Working THROUGH people
(Instrumentalist people are tools)
TEAM APPROACH: Working WITH people.
HUMANISTIC: Working with PEOPLE (Maslow).
CATHOLIC: Becoming a COMMUNITY OF WORK
where work is a partnership with God
where people grow in body, mind, spirit
where virtue and the common good are promoted
contributing to a more just and humane society
Work helps the poor
when it creates jobs
or when excess
profits are used to
help them.
1/3 of profit to help people in needcreating new jobs and
intervening to meet their immediate needs

1/3 of profit to spread the "Culture of Giving" and of
reciprocity through educational programs

1/3 of profit to develop the business to insure vitality and
competitiveness

The Economy of Communion (EOC) is a business model
followed by international professional men and women who
choose to help those in need through their businesses. It was
started by Chiara Lubich in May 1991, in So Paulo, Brazil,
with the aim of building and showing a human society where,
following the example of the first Christian community in
Jerusalem, "no one among them was in need".
Work is how we fulfill ourselves as creatures made
in the image and likeness of a Worker-God.
SHALOM

Creation is an ongoing project in which God
Invites human beings to participate.
It will be finished when the world
reflects the SHALOM of God.

By his labor a man ordinarily (1)
supports himself and his family, is
(2) joined to his fellow men and
serves them, and can (3) exercise
genuine charity and (4) be a
partner in the work of bringing
divine creation to perfection.

Indeed, we hold that through labor
offered to God, man is associated
with the redemptive work of Jesus
Christ, Who conferred an eminent
dignity on labor when at Nazareth
He worked with His own hands.

WORK
Human work continues the work of
creation by creating necessary
goods and services that contribute
to the good of humankind.
Human work shares in the work
of redemption when we seek to
correct unjust and inhumane
practices and to contribute to a
more just and humane world.

He took pride in manual labor.

He took pleasure in the beauty
of things he made.

He used work to express his
creativity and skill.

He saw work as a sharing in
the work of the Father.

TO RECEIVE in trust and gratitude all
that God gives and does for us.

TO GIVE/SHARE what we have
received so as to bring the world
closer to the ideal of Gods Kingdom.
we need God and God has done great
things for us. In return God asks us to be His
hands and feet, to continue His creation and
make it better for others.

For the business leader, this entails creating
goods which are truly good and services
which truly serve; organizing work where
employees develop their gifts and talents;
and creating sustainable wealth so that it can
be distributed justly. (VBL # 80)

Challenge # 1: Meeting the worlds needs
through the creation and development of
goods and services.

Principle #1: Good businesses produce
goods that are really good and services that
really serve in order to contribute to the
common good.

Principle #2: Businesses maintain solidarity
with the poor by being alert for opportunities
to serve the deprived and underserved.
Challenge # 2: Organizing good and
productive work.

Principle #3: Businesses contribute to the
common good by fostering the dignity of
work. J obs should be designed to make
human beings more fully human.

Principle #4: Businesses provide through
subsidiarity, opportunities for employees to
exercise appropriate authority and thus
contribute to the mission of the organization.
Challenge # 3: Creating sustainable
wealth and distributing it justly.

Principle #5: Businesses model stewardship
of resources-whether capital, human, or
environmental-that they have received in order
to be self-sustaining and contribute to the good
of all.

Principle #6: Businesses practice distributive
justice in the allocation of resources to all
stakeholders, employees, customers, investors,
suppliers and the community.

. . .we treat persons only as instruments of
production not as people with God-given
dignity.

important dimensions of human wellbeing
are ignored or neglected.

work is disconnected from moral and
spiritual values.

what is produced doesnt contribute to the

profits accrue to only a few.
