P AS ADE NA C OVE NANT CHURCH

September 2014

Join Us on the Journey,
beginning September 14th

Ive seen that when I reflect on my own life experiences, when I am alert to Gods presence,
and alive to Christs love, I grow as a Christ follower, and as a human being living in Gods
world. This book is an invitation for you not to follow me, but follow Jesus into the stories of
your own life. You too, will need to wake up and be willing to walkthrough your own life.

Living fully alive in Christ is about claiming an identity. An identity is formed not just by
doctrine or prescription, or even insight and stated values, but by stories that we live and those
that are told to us.

The glory of God is all of us fully alive in Christ with our own stories in their specific
locations, with their specific circumstancesLiving with joyful abandon as those who are loved,
who are given the gift of faith and hope as a reality rather than just wishful thinking, is the way
we hold on to life with all of who we are and were created to be.
Christ-Shaped Character Helen Cepero

This September we are trying out a new way to share our stories with each other and help form
each other spiritually. Our adult life groups will be led by Pasadena Covenant Church staff
membersyes, each one of us will lead a group---focusing on pathways that help us grow into
deeper life in love, faith, and hope in Christ. In the next few weeks you will be able to sign up
online to participate in a group and join us in this next season of Life Together in the family of
God.

Ext endi ng our Reach
Pasadena Covenant has many care givers who are reaching out to folks from our congregation, who
are going through rough or isolated times, by bringing them meals or helping in other way. So first
of all, may I say a sincere thanks to the many who are helping out with the care of our
congregants who may not be able to normally join us in worship. At this time, however, we are
learning of more needs than we, as the ones who are plugged into this ministry, are able to fill. So it
would be wonderful to have more people join us in occasionally providing a meal or visiting people
needing some care. I can assure you that you will find very grateful saints who will be uplifted by
your gift of care to them. If you think that you would be able to help in this ministry wed love to
hear from you. Please contact Pastor Jim Tyberg (jtyberg@pasadenacovenant.org) or Caryl Tyberg,
Congregational Care,(carylynnswan@hotmail.com).

Cross-Cultural Communication Specialists Praise & Prayer Requests

Elizabeth English was a member of Pasadena Covenant Church while she served students and staff at
Oxy and other campuses in Greater Los Angeles with InterVarsity
Christian Fellowship. Five years ago, she moved to St. Louis to lead
InterVarsitys ministry in Missouri. Now, she works with InterVarsity
Link, essentially InterVarsitys internal mission agency. She is also
helping to prepare for Bible study at Urbana 15.
InterVarsity Link: InterVarsity/USA is one of over 150 indigenous
student movements around the world that make up the International
Fellowship of Evangelical Students. InterVarsity in the US is far better
resourced than most of our sister movements, with staff, funding, training, and more. Meanwhile, we
Americans have so much to learn from our brothers and sisters around the world about humility,
partnership, suffering, courage, and so much more. So, its a wonderful mutual blessing that we can send
American staff to serve with many of our sister movements around the world. Deron and Jessica Bauer are
among over 50 staff currently serving around the world with Link. Elizabeth is honored to get to serve staff
like the Bauers while they are abroad, and busy recruiting and training others to join their ranks.
Urbana 15: We want to compel this generation to give their whole lives for Gods global mission. Next
December, 18,000 college students will gather in St Louis and God
will move in their hearts and lives. Last week, the Urbana 15
Program Team gathered for the first time, along with the Bible Study
coordinators, to spend four days beginning to soak in the Matthew
texts that will shape the conference. Each morning will begin with 90
-minute interactive, inductive large group (300-1000) Bible studies,
followed by exposition on another passage, and days that flow out of
those Scriptures. Elizabeth has been blessed to teach at the past 3 Urbanas. For Urbana 15, she will help
gather, coordinate, and train the team of about 50 teachers.
Praises:
God is working powerfully in and through staff in the countries Elizabeth serves.
Praise God for fruitful training for new Link staff this summer.
Praise God for blessed visits with staff on the field in recent months.
Praise God for the ways he has consistently worked through Urbana since 1946, propelling many into
missional engagement in his world.

Prayer:
Pray for Elizabeths health. She continues to struggle with migraines, which keep slowing her
down. She would be deeply blessed by healing of chronic issues as well.

is planned, and for selection and training of teachers.
Pray for Muslim seekers in several countries to come to know Jesus.

Jump Start was a huge success! Jump Start is a back-to-school daycamp we hold every August to
serve low-income families in our community. This year's camp was bigger than ever with more
kids coming every day as word spread! We ended up with 30 kids, having a great time learning,
playing and eating together. The kids arrived early not wanting to miss a minute and didn't
want camp to end. The kids were joined on Friday by their parents for a final celebration
where they received tote bags filled with donated school supplies, and were able to each choose
four books to take home. It was touching to see how thrilled they were with these simple gifts,
running up to show us the books they selected or the notebook they found stuffed in their tote
bag. The camp ended with a fabulous slide show and many hugs, along with promises to return
next summer. Many, many thanks to the dozens of volunteers who served:

8 registration/check-in workers who welcomed families in both English& Spanish
a dozen volunteers who planned fun games, crafts, reading/writing lessons, cooking/cake
decorating, and free play electives
our photographer, crossing guard & worship leader (Thomas) and tech guy (Rory)
a whole team of volunteers who made sandwiches, bagged chips, donated fruit and served
up more than 300 lunches!
kids' favorite: a team of bakers who kept their ovens humming turning out dozens of
cookies & more than 96 cupcakes!
4 fabulous Counselors-in-Training (Jack, Annie, Elijah and Nateasha) who jumped in and
were ready to serve wherever needed
our awesome mighty team of 16 young counselors who gave up a week of their summer to
pour out their hearts and build friendships with kids
We are so grateful for each and every one of these volunteers who were part of something
wonderful in this little corner of Pasadena.
Thank you for investing in the next generation!

JumpStart! Update Continued
The Lab: Mad About Jesus!
During August, all the PCC kids ages 2 thru 6th grade met
together for a special summer program called "the Lab: Mad
about Jesus!" Kids participated in fun science experiments that
became object lessons to teach biblical truths, with older kids
acting as "lab assistants" to help the younger ones. It was great
fun for all!

PasCov Kids: Summer Sunday School August 10-Sept. 7, 10:30am
preschool & gradeschool: The Lab: Mad About Jesus!
Brittany Burian will lead us in a special program using exciting and FUN science experiments to learn
amazing things abut God and His wonderful creation. Gradeschoolers will check into their usual upstairs
classroom for Bible study and prep, then join the preschoolers to serve as Doc Brittanys lab assistants.
Dont miss out!
Following up at home:
Continuing the conversation at home is essential! No matter how much fun we have on Sunday mornings,
it is only a complement to the far more impactful conversations you have with you have with your kids
around the kitchen table or at their bedside. Several parents took up our challenge last fall to begin a daily
ritual of asking/praying/journaling with their kids about where did you see God today? This has turned
into a treasured family ritual that has yielded rich returns! If you havent already begun this practice, its
not too late. Simply take a few minutes at dinner or bedtime to ask where did I see God active today?
and allow each family member to share a few moments. If you take a few minutes to journal your
response, it provides a great reminder that you can look back over at the end of the week.
LEGO and Duplo Blocks Needed!
PCC Kids' Ministry needs your old Lego and Duplo
blocks - any size! They will be part of a fun,
interactive new grade school curriculum we'll be
starting in the fall. Bring your Legos/Duplos to the church office on
Sunday or any weekday between 9am-3pm. They'll be greatly appreciated and well used!
Volunteers Needed for Nursery Ministry Team: 1x Month
Join our nursery ministry team! Be part of a team serving once a month during the 10:30am
service, caring for our adorable babies and be on the ground floor of what God is doing in
the lives of PCC Kids! We also need child care workers to be on call for paid evening and
weekend special events. For more info about either (or both!) of these opportunities, contact
Vikki Randall at vrandall@pasadenacovenant.org
